Hopefully you have all received the logistics stand down that was held at your local plant. Please feed back good and bad experiences on how these were run and content etc.
Feedback helps us make any improvements on how they are run.
After substantial pressure from Logistics industry, Transport for London has developed a process for applying for grace periods in bulk. This is an exceptional process and will only be available to operators making period application for more than 100 vehicles. Applications accepted from 1st October 2024, however, Transport for London encourages eligible operators to start collating documentation and evidence now so that they can submit their application quickly when it is ready to accept them. Transport for London says it will reach out to operators who have contacted them directly.
A driver was delivering material to a customer site. During the tipping process the driver failed to recognise that the material was not discharging. The tailboard had failed to open, however, the driver continued to raise the body, and with the force of material against the tailboard, this resulted in the righthand pin snapping and the tailboard hanging down still attached from the left-hand hinge. The driver was informed by the onsite banksman that the tailboard was damaged. The driver was assisted by another driver and the onsite banksman, who attempted to secure the tailboard, the tailboard dropped on two occasions narrowly missing the drivers. At this point the secondary securing twist locks were used to secure the tailboard for the driver to leave site to allow mechanical repairs to be undertaken.
The latest version of the FORS standard has now been released and will be implemented from 1st January 2025. FORS have produced a useful summary of changes document which details all the key amendments in V7 and these can be found on the FORS website: fors-online.org.uk/cms/
• The driver had failed to recognise the material was not discharging.
• The tailboard had failed to open in the correct manor.
• The drivers did not seek authorisation from the customer to carry out repairs on site.
• No risk assessments or safe systems of work were in place for tailboard repairs.
Please use this briefing note to discuss with the hauliers and drivers the unsafe act and the key findings. Discuss with the hauliers and drivers the importance of staying vigilant during the discharge process. If material is not free flowing the body must be lowered and inform the customer of any discharging issues. A reminder that no maintenance or repairs can be carried out prior to authorisation from the customer and must be completed by a trained and competent person with a suitable and sufficient safe systems of work.
Tarmac holds health and safety as its highest priority:
• Sustained focus on continuous improvement in health and safety
• Driver for collaboration in sharing learns and good practice with key customers
• High speed networks inherently high risk and provide significant hazards
• Frequent incidents across the business with incorrect and unsafe entry of hauliers to sites.
Trials are currently being done in London, South East and Anglia using the above site instruction. More details will follow once trial completed.
“Drivers increase their risk of being in accident by 13% when they are unfamiliar with their destination point”
Last month saw a large number of CPC card renewels you can be fined up to £1,000 for driving professionally without driver CPC. You can check how many hours of training you’ve done in the current 5-year period.
Drivers should complete 7 hours of training a year and aim to cover a range of subjects. You should encourage drivers to choose a variety of training. Drivers leaving their training late is not an acceptable reason for them to repeat the same course. If drivers do not have a good reason for repeating a course DVSA can cancel the hours a driver received from a course. They might lose their Driver CPC card if cancelling the hours takes their total back under 35 hours.
DVSA can take action against you for knowingly providing repeat training without a good reason.

This is an excellent example of an issue that hauliers raised using the new Safety Observation QR codes. The material was shooting out all over the place due to the load out chute and sock being badly damaged, and less than 2 weeks later new rubber ordered, repaired and installed. Well done to the driver for raising and operations for putting an action plan in place.
This was reported on day 1 of the logistics safety stand down at Douglasmuir Quarry.
Douglasmuir Safety Observation improvements
Driver was delivering to site on M25 and raised safety observation for loose debris and dirt being dragged onto main carriage way. Was raised with customer and haul road was closed and used alternative exit. Great observation by drivers and customer for resolving issue as quick as they did. Keep up the good work everyone.
Driver raised safety observation during logistics stand down at Stancombe lorry park for some potholes and plant put action in place and filled in within a week.
It is that time of year again Sunday 27th October when the clocks change and go back an hour. We would ask you to ensure that PPE is in good condition, and “Hi-Viz” not covered in dirt, grease etc, drivers should have head torches to complete their pre and post shift checks in the dark.
Some of the items to look out for during the coming winter months are:
• Ground conditions – soft verges, potholes
• Visibility – darker mornings/afternoons
• Frozen material – dust, sand etc
• Slips, trips and falls – due to ice and wet weather
• Glare from sun and other vehicle lights
• Signage cleanliness
• High winds
• Fatigue due to heater in cabs
• Spray from other vehicles
• PPE is up to scratch
• Vulnerable road users who may be putting themselves at risk by wearing dark clothing.
Remember - if you see a near hit to report via your ePOD or any other source you use. But please have the confidence to “Step-In” and politely challenge anyone who is doing unsafe - this may stop an incident or injury occurring. If you unfortunately have an accident, remember to advise your logistics team.
With the weather starting to change it is very important that your tailboards are kept clean at all times.
Winter watch - Always be prepared in case you get stuck
DO - Keep a fully charged mobile phone
DO - Keep warm clothing and a blanket
DO - Carry a Hi-vis jacket
DO - Carry a working torch
DO - Carry a spade or shovel
DO - Have spare food and water/drink.
Remember to keep your distance Braking distances can be 10 times longer in bad weather so keep your distance. 3 7
DO - Know your route and ensure your mobile phone is working, although do not use it whilst driving
DO - In severe weather always check with your supervisor before attending to your vehicle and prior to making any delivery.
Clean signs help maintain a professional appearance
Clean, well-kept signs show that your business is reliable, honest, trustworthy, and serious about what you do. Neglected signs, on the other hand, tend to make you, your products, and your services appear less reliable.

Cloud connectivity takes Wheely-Safe’s level of protection to new heights
Wheely-Safe has introduced telematics-style cloud connectivity into its world-leading suite of intelligent tyre pressure monitoring, wheel loss and brake temperature sensing systems.
Designed to identify issues with wheels and tyres before they result in costly downtime or an accident, the technology has been protecting many Tarmac operators across the UK since it was first introduced to market five years ago.
In 2023, Wheely-Safe was awarded with the ‘DVSA Recognised’ label, an accolade only bestowed on products that are ‘well designed and delivered with genuine potential to improve road safety’.
combines an intelligent TPMS, wheel nuts, and active the brakes, hub & tyres.
Now the simple-to-use, and easy-to-fit, solutions have taken a step further - adding telematics-style cloud connectivity which brings a wealth of additional advantages.
helps you to:
Ian Maynard, Managing Director, Wheely-Safe Systems, says: “Linking our sensors to the cloud is a major advancement and will give fleets a true insight into how wheels and tyres are performing. So much data is collected from vehicles, but until now no one has been able to reliably track instances of loosening wheel nuts, that can lead to wheel loss incidents.”
Reduce downtime, through early notification of common maintenance
“Our latest cloud-connected technology can feed data not just to the driver in the cab, but also to the team back at base – notifying fleet managers by email when there is an issue. Since the system records all sensor data, it can also provide fleets with valuable information that can be used to minimise vehicle off road time.” To learn more and arrange a demonstration, visit www.wheely-safe.com
Reduce operating costs, by keeping top of inflation pressures –maximising fuel efficiency & extending life
Reduce the risk of wheel detachment which can be catastrophic and directly impact OCRS scores
Reduce the risk of vehicle fires be triggered by brakes binding or bearing issues

From 20/9 PM to 21/9 AM HS2 delivered 1873.6 m3 (288 loads) its largest pour so far. This was a result of months’ planning with customer to pull off an extremely successful pour. They exceeded the 120 m3/hr pour rate required, batching the first load at 14:50 on the Friday with the makeup load at 7:41 on the Saturday. Well-done to everyone involved, great team effort.
CogLock provides the ultimate wheel security solution to help protect operators and their fleets. Specifically designed to prevent wheel detachment, CogLock’s innovative design provides a visual indicator, secure locking mechanism, and streamlines maintenance.

Please help in every way by spreading the word to everybody throughout Tarmac and contractors to help Gareth raise as much money as possible for a great charity. For those of you in a position to give then please click the link below and help change the world.
We all watch various charity organisations advertise, and I am sure at some point we all have wanted to do something. This man has not only been a great mentor for men’s mental health within Tarmac and his community but has taken on a big challenge for a great charity. So, if we all put our hands in our pocket for Gareth then just think how much he can raise.
