First, take note of the paragraph written on the page. Observe each word. Look at the letters. The way they take up space on this sheet. The contrast in colour is stark, yet its appearance is bland. The black letters are easy to read, yet the white areas inside and in between are easy to overlook.

read As you continue to read, keep your eye on the black letters and the equal amounts of negative space. The shapes are clear and free of embellishments. Now, look even closer. Notice the difference between the vertical and horizontal lines. There is a slight, but clearly visible contrast in stroke weight. The down strokes are thick and static. The up strokes are thin and lively. These visual sensitivities give this seemingly ordinary typeface a striking personality.

MASTER
Univers’s appeal lies in its legibility and flexibility. Thousands of magazines, books, posters and even the Paris Metro signs use text set in Univers. It’s one of the most significant and enduring typefaces of the twentieth century, a masterpiece of structured diversity.
