FOOD WASTE - Survey

FOOD WASTE The food waste in the UK and how they have been able to handle it.

The main ideas of the article

What supports this theory?

According to the WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme), a non profit organization, most of food waste in the UK happens at home. There are two main reasons: people don't get around to eating perishable food in time or they cook too much and throw out the leftovers.

How to help reduce the problem of food waste

The most interesting thing The most important thing we have read in this article is that most of the waste of food in the UK takes place at home and there are two main reasons why this happens: people aren't able to finish perishable food in time; or they cook too much food and they cannot eat all of it. To monitor the effects of the campaign, WRAP has convinced 1800 families all over the UK to register exactly what food they bought and how much of it has finished in the garbage. The campaign has been a success. The quantity of food waste "avoidable" per household has decreased by 24% between the 2007 and the 2012.

FOOD WASTE

What is the main idea of this article? The article speaks about food waste and how we can avoid it. The main idea provides information about how to save food and gives some advice about this. This will be the major contribute on the attitude and behavioural change.

2 Supporting Details The idea of saving food is supported by TV spots , billboard ads and also by some sites like SaveTheFood.com, which provides strategies for avoiding waste, and also includes a guide on “how to store foods”.

How will this information help us?

Some information, such as knowing how many tons of food are wasted each year, leads to human awareness and as Jesse Fink said “Consumer awareness and education is the most important solution to reduce food waste”.

The most interesting fact

FOOD WASTE

A NEW CAMPAIGN: L’INTERMARCHÈ The main idea of this article is food waste. The third largest supermarket in France, l’ Intermarchè, launched a campaign to put an end to this waste. L’ Intermarchè wanted to help prevent food waste by proving to customers that unattractive fruits and vegetables are just delicious as their pristine counterparts.

WHO SUPPORTS THIS IDEA The two details that support the main idea are the Marcel advertising agency and the photographer Patrice de Villiers who produced seven posters with the protagonists of the unattractive products. The posters included images of the grotesque apple, the ridiculous potato, the hideous orange, the failed lemon, the disfigured eggplant, the ugly carrot, and the unfortunate clementine.

For Patrice, the most important part was giving character to the greens and he said to Fast Company that the most important thing was to ensuring that the theme was transposed. He spent time watching bad things but in their brutality and beauty, making them unique.

HOW TO REDUCE THE PROBLEM OF FOOD WASTE Supermarkets can take the initiative to transform the product (fruit and vegetables) just creating a greater profit from the goods that have not been sold ... transforming what was previously considered "waste" (no longer visually presentable to buyers) in smoothie fruit salads and edible fruit and vegetable extracts, resulting in less food waste and also taking into account the environmental pollution issue.

PERSONAL OPINIONS the most interesting thing that I have read in this article is the way in which fruits and vegetables are described making their defects into merits, it is very interesting how they produced soups and foods to demonstrate that the products that were usually discarded were actually very good. This also reminds me of today's society that often judges and rejects a person for his appearance, and not for what he has to offer. This article makes me think a lot.

NO TO WASTE 1. 2. 3. 4.

Maximo Diedhiou Alessandro Gualano Nicolas Cristiano Salvatore Pretorino

The main idea of the article is to make people understand that we need to reduce food waste by 50% by 2030

For the first detail when you look at the oil used in the production of wasted food, it is 70 times the amount of oil we lost in the Deepwater Horizon disaster

While for the second on the farms a lot of waste is generated, as we have documented in this story about lettuce grown in California, when food not up to cosmetic standards is not harvested. Food often ends up in landfills as well because it doesn't stay fresh long enough to be shipped across the country. Restaurants and grocery stores also generate a lot of waste.

Many initiatives are already underway to tackle food waste. For example, the EPA's Food Recovery Challenge is helping food manufacturers and grocers donate more food. And grocery stores are increasingly buying and selling imperfect or ugly products. Additionally, restaurants are turning to new technologies to help them monitor and identify opportunities to reduce waste.

What struck us most about this article is that currently, Vilsack says, 133 billion pounds of food is wasted every year, which is enough to fill the Wills Tower 44 times. E 'has hit us for the simple fact that to fill a tower of 110 floors, 44 times, is really unthinkable partly because we do not realize how we waste, for example, if we throw a packet of pasta for us would be foolish and not we realize when we waste.

WHAT IS THE MAIN IDEA OF THIS ARTICLE? The main idea of this article is food waste and what to do to prevent it. Food waste is the phenomenon of the loss of food that is still good to be consumed by human beings, which occurs throughout the production and consumption chain. of food. It is estimated that one third of all food produced for human consumption is wasted every year. Especially in rich countries, a large part of still good food is wasted directly by consumers. While another huge part of food is wasted throughout the food production process. From agricultural production to processing, sale and preservation of food.

WHAT ARE 2 DETAILS THAT SUPPORT THIS BEING THE MAIN IDEA? Food is wasted at every stage: during transport, processing and even when it arrives in our refrigerators. All this also affects the waste of water, fertilizer and the carburetor for the operation of the tractor. Food waste is among the major contributors to landfills in the United States. When food rots, it emits methane "a very powerful gas" and food waste is responsible.

HOW WILL THE INFORMATION HELP GET RID OF OR REDUCE THE PROBLEM OF FOOD WASTE? New efforts are underway in recent years to reduce food waste. To date, the Environmental diverts about 375,000 tons of waste, and some manufacturers such as Ocean Mist and HMC Farms donate some of the less-than-perfect products to California food banks. Over the past decade, the California Association of Food Banks says it has doubled the amount of products distributed, thanks in part to these types of donations.

WHAT IS THE MOST INTERESTING THING YOU READ IN THIS ARTICLE?WHY? In this article I found it important that over time there is a way to avoid wasting food and I also found it important that some manufacturers donate some products to California food banks.

A quick way to reduce food waste using few bad apples We all know the benefits of organic recycling, some would even argue that compost diversion from landfill is more important that recycling. That being said if you're tired of looking at bad apples, you can easily reduce your food waste by recycling them into a delicious apple sauce. With a few simple ingredients, they'll be hot & fresh in 30 minutes (5 minutes prep). Mix and match your apples types for the right balance of sweetness & tart.

Things you'll need for 1 serving • • • • •

6 bruised apples (not too far gone) 3/4 cup of water 1/4 cup of brown sugar 1 tablespoon of cinnamon Optional: 1 tablespoon of vanilla yogurt

Step 1: Wash all apples. Then, de-core, peel and remove any bruised portions. As you go, separate the fresh and compostable portions.

Step 2: Preheat a shallow saucepan on medium heat. Compost the peels & bruised portions. Then, measure out: 3/4 cup of water, 1/4 of brown sugar & 1 tablespoon of cinnamon.

Step 3: Combine your ingredients to the saucepan; give a few quick stirs for even mixing. Cover & cook apples for 20 minutes or until soft.

Step 4: Remove from heat & cool for 5 minutes. Serve as is. Optionally top off with a tablespoon of vanilla yogurt, and feel satisfied that you've taken a step in reducing your food waste

Six great uses for stale bread 24 million slices of bread are thrown out by households in Britain every day, and nearly one in five UK households admit to binning an entire loaf of bread before even opening it or slicing it, according to research conducted last year on behalf of the charity Love Food Hate Waste. Bread is one of our nation’s favourite foods, with almost half of adults eating it daily. However, it seems we are not eating anywhere near as much bread as we are buying, which is a food waste issue that needs to be addressed. So, why do we throw our bread out? It has usually gone stale or mouldy. Today we are focusing on stale bread, and here are six suggestions of how you can use it up instead of throwing it in the bin.

1. Toast it This is a simple solution, but one that many people don’t consider. Toast your stale bread and you’d never know it was stale in the first place. Add lashings of butter and your favourite toppings.

3. Make breadcrumbs Whizz up your stale bread in a food processor (or grate it) to create breadcrumbs. These crumbs can then be used in recipes – to top savoury dishes, ‘bread’ meat, stuff poultry, make burgers and sausages, or thicken stews, soups or gravies. There are so many uses for breadcrumbs, however if you don’t want to use them right away, you can freeze them for up to 6 months in an airtight container.

5. Make a bread & butter pudding Bread and butter pudding is a traditional British dish that takes us back to our childhoods. It is also ideal for using up and disguising stale bread. If you’ve not cooked this pudding before, try Delia’s recipe.

Carrot peels

The scones with carrot peels can be enjoyed in many ways. As a snack, as a snack to be consumed during an aperitif or, simply, as a hunger breaker when you feel a little peckish. They are easy to prepare and it is an excellent recipe for recycling carrot peels. Also good on their own, they are appreciated even more if accompanied with some grilled vegetables or with cold cuts, cheeses or sauces.

Ham bone

The great thing about this ham bone soup is that you don't necessarily have to make it the day after Christmas. You cut some ham and freeze it in a separate bag. Don't have a ham bone? Check your grocery store's meat counter for ham hocks, they are very cheap and are the perfect substitute for a ham bone for the holidays. It's super easy, quick and can be a great way to use leftover ham!

Turn it into cheese. 1. Line a colander with cheesecloth for wrapping cheeses (cotton or muslin are fine too). Pour in the coagulated milk. If you want to flavor the cheese, add some sliced herbs, some spices, sliced fruit or vegetables to the milk and mix. 2. Grab the sides of the gauze and make a bundle of it. Tie a knot on top. 3. Hang it in the fridge over a tureen (use the top shelf or a taller object to support it). Keep it in this position until it stops dripping. 4. Remove the cheese from the fridge and cheesecloth, and place it on a plate. Add salt and enjoy it with crackers. Store in the fridge in an airtight container.

Use sour milk to make sweets. Suitable desserts are crème brûlée, custard, cheesecake and pudding.

Use it for baked goods. Sour milk can be added to sweets or bread; after cooking in the oven, it will not be noticed. Check sour milk recipes (the internet makes it easier!). For starters, try sour milk gingerbread. 1. Use it instead of whey for cornmeal bread. 2. Add it to the pancake batter. 3. Add it to the bread dough to be kneaded by hand or put in the bread making machine.

Advice that I do not practice but would like.

Add sour milk to dishes for a creamy consistency as a topping. Dishes such as stews, baked potatoes and the like are very suitable. 1. Add it to the meatloaf to make it more moist. 2. Add it to soups to make them creamier.

Make scrambled eggs using sour milk.

Advice that I will never use.

Make the chocolate milk. Add cocoa or carob powder, sugar, and sour milk. I will never use this advice because since sour milk smells a lot and it hurts to drink it

Some ways to reuse leftovers you would normally throw away! Sour milk You can use sour milk as a marinade for meat, sour milk makes a great marinade for meat, especially chicken! Simply soak your meat in the sour milk for a few hours. When you remove it, you’ll have tender meat with only a hint of the sour flavor. As I said, chicken works extremely well with this since sour milk tastes so much like buttermilk. To make buttermilk fried chicken with sour milk, marinate your chicken, then coat and fry as you normally would. Before:

After:

Leftover coffee from the day Freeze Coffee Cubes. Pour leftover coffee into ice cube trays and freeze. When you want to make an iced coffee for the summer months these little coffee cubes are the perfect addition to your chilled cup of Joe. They keep it nice and cold without watering it down as they melt. Before: After:

3 ways to reuse leftovers I already practice in my own home! Ripe banana Banana Bread. First you cut the bananas in slices, then you mix the eggs with the sugar. You add the bananas and a bit of salt to the eggs, mix and then add milk, oil, flour, yeast and baking soda. The super rich taste of the bananas makes a very moist banana bread and their softness makes them easy to incorporate into the recipes. Before: After:

Broccoli ends/stems Save leftover broccoli stems in a large Zip-lock bag in the freezer, along with other vegetable scraps such as ends of carrots, kale stalks, etc. When the bag is full, use the vegetable odds and ends to make a big batch of broth. The best thing about using broccoli stems for broth is that you can make use of the entire stem, including the tough outer layer. Before: After:

Leftover boiled/mashed potatoes You can reuse mashed potatoes to make pizza. You make a normal pizza dough but you add you boiled or mashed potatoes, let it rise and then cook it and it will turn softer than usual. That’s how you make a Focaccia Barese! Before: After:

2 ways to reuse leftovers I don’t practice, but would attempt to try. Leftover cooked vegetables You can make a delicious Russian Salad with the leftovers of cooked vegetables. You cut them into little pieces, then you add mayonnaise, lemon juice and a boiled egg, if you want. Let it cool for 3 or 4 hours in the fridge and it’s ready! Before: After:

Peels/ends of onions, carrots, celery, potatoes From the leftovers of your vegetables you man make some ramen. You cut them in not too small pieces and you cook them with soy sauce, boiled eggs and some chicken or another type of meat you like. Then you add some water for the broth and in the end you add the japanese noodles. Before: After:

A leftover I would never use is soft apple, cause I find it absolutely disgusting!

when there are overripe bananas in my house, my father, instead of throwing

them away, decides to use them as fertilizer for the earth because they are too soft to eat.

LEFTOVER COFFEE FROM THE DAY once reading advice on face masks on the internet I read that to reduce pimples I could make a coffee mask and therefore instead of throwing away the leftovers of the day's coffee I used it like this.

REPURPOSE – REUSE RECYCLE FOOD SCRAPS

Bacon grease:

The bacon grease can be packed if you intend to use of immediately, it must be stored in a conteiner at room temperature. If in a long-term refrigerator or freezer. The bacon grease will keep safely for at least a month in the freezer. You can cook delicious food using the bacon grease, is an excellent sobstitute for lard or shortening. It can be used to infuse a delightful bacon flavor into a new dish. Try using your bacon grease to prepare one the following suggestions: deep fried vegetables, hearty meat dishes, authentic gingersnap cookies. Link: https://www.wikihow.com/Dispose-of-Bacon-Grease

Sour milk:

Sour milk is a good replacement for buttermilk, yogurt, or sour cream. Some recipes even call for “soured milk,” which requires you to add a spoonful of vinegar to milk. Make pancakes, waffles, biscuits, a fruit-bottomed upside-down cake. Skin Care It’s called “lactic acid facial.” Rubbing sour milk (or sour cream or yogurt) onto your skin will make it smoother, firmer, and lighter. Some fair-skinned people say that rubbing whey onto their skin assists with tanning if you get out into the sunshine soon afterward. Add a cup of sour milk to the bathtub for extra-smooth skin. You may want some essential oils, too, if the odor is strong. Gardening Dilute sour milk with water and pour onto garden beds to increase calcium content. It’s supposed to be particularly good for tomato plants. Link: https://www.treehugger.com/got-sour-milk-dont-throw-it-out4858808

MY OPINIONS: I do not practice any kind of recycling, but I would like to practise sour milk. It seems to me an interesting way of skin care because it seems very useful to skin. I would never use the

bacon method because I think fat hurts and I wouldn't like to eat such a thing. Li Quadri Denise

Leftover coffee from the day

Maybe you had to run out the door before finishing your freshly brewed pot or you simply made too much, but whatever the case, you have leftover coffee in your kitchen. It might not be tasty enough to sip on its own, but don’t be too quick to pour it down the drain. Here are seven simple ways to make use of the remaining pot: https://www.thekitchn.com/7-ways-to-use-up-leftover-coffee-239350

Sour milk Using the soured milk instead of tossing it is a great idea! You simply need to learn how to use it and you’ll be good to go! Now when I say sour milk, I am not talking about a jug that has been open for months and already has big chunks. I am talking about milk that is just starting to turn. With that said, if the milk is more than three days past its date, it is probably safer to toss it. Don’t attempt to use it if it has begun to separate and curdle on its own. Here are some ways to make use of sour milk: https://reusegrowenjoy.com/how-to-usesour-milk-without-wasting-it/
