Bushrangers Basketball Hobart – Come Out and Play! Moonah Basketball Stadium, 17 Gormanstone Road, Moonah Saturday 30 January 2021 | 2:30pm FREE ENTRY Bushrangers Basketball is Australia’s largest LGBTIQA+ basketball club. Our club’s big focus is inclusion, especially for our gender diverse and transgender pals. Hobart, Come Out & Play, will kick off our 2021 Tassie season with a bang and showcase our non-gendered mixed basketball rules

We love basketball but it can be a big binary bin-fire for some of us in the community. Our new mixed basketball rules mean everyone can ‘Come Out & Play’ irrespective of their sexuality, gender identity or sports ball skillz. It’s not just a game, it’s a dance with a game going on in the middle. Throw some shapes on the sidelines to local DJ Mama de Leche and see first-hand why everyone wants to be a Bushranger! Half time won’t be a drag (ok maybe a fabulous one!) with a mystery half time performance. Tickets are strictly limited and will go quickly to this free and super fun Tassie Pride event. Hobart, Come Out & Play is hosted in proud partnership with Glenorchy Basketball Association. The post-game celebration will kick off at Boodle Beasley. For more info send an enquiry via www.bushrangersbasketball.com.

hear & queer STORIES OF TASMANIAN YOUTH

Working It Out & Edge Radio I don't know how I d id it but I picked a name from a book off the shelf and I never looked back. How did I personally know? Because when people started calling me Sir, I smiled. When I put on a binder for the first time and saw my chest flat, I finally felt comfortable in my own body. And after all these years, I can't really imagine myself as a girl anymore...

The biggest thing I get is people telling me I can't be a lesbian be cause I don't look like one. And that's because I have quite long hair and I dress quite femininely. But how you look has nothing to do with your sexual orientation at all. That's just based on stereotypes.

I remember when I first came out to my parents. It was like 9 o'clock and I was already in bed, and I got up thinking, 'I'm going to have to tell them. I'm going to have to tell them I like men.'Um... and I did. My parents were watching TV in the lounge room and I was like, 'Mum and Dad, I'm gay.' And they were like, 'OK, we already knew. Go back to bed. We've seen your internet history.'

At home HIV self-test kit THIS INFORMATION SHEET ANSWERS SOME COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT HIV HOME TESTING. FOR MORE INFORMATION, CALL US AT TASCAHRD ON 03 6234 1242. I think I was exposed to HIV: where can I get tested? It takes up to three months after an exposure to HIV for the ATOMO home tests to detect the virus. So, if you think you have recently been exposed, it’s best to see your GP or a local sexual health clinic to talk about options. If you think you have been exposed to HIV in the last 72 hours, consider taking PEP (post exposure prophylaxis). PEP is a month-long course of medication that can prevent HIV. You can get PEP at the emergency department of public hospitals or a sexual health clinic. Call the PEP Hotline for more information on 1800737669. But act quickly – you need to begin treatment within 72 hours of exposure for the medication to be effective.

How accurate is the ATOMO home test? The test is 99.6% accurate at detecting HIV. If you have been exposed to HIV within the last three months, it may not be detected by this test.

What happens if I get a reactive result? Although these tests are very accurate, a reactive result does not always mean you have HIV – this needs to be verified with further results. If you get a reactive result you should make an appointment for a follow up HIV test as soon as possible. You can do this at a trusted GP, or a sexual health clinic such as the Tasmanian Sexual Health Service (ph. 03 6166 2672). If you’re not sure where to go, we can help you find a friendly GP.

What if I have HIV? HIV is a manageable condition. Knowing your status gives you the power to protect your health and the health of your sexual partners. You are not alone. There is a wide range of support available to guide you through this. 14

We can connect you with workers who can help you make sense of your diagnosis and support you to take care of your health. With treatment, you can live a long and healthy life. Treatment can also reduce the level of HIV in your blood so that it cannot be transmitted to others. It’s important to start treatment as soon as possible.

My test is negative; how do I protect myself from HIV in the future? If you’re having sex, or injecting drugs, there are many ways to protect yourself from HIV. You choose what works for you! Condoms used with silicon or water- based lube will protect you from HIV and most STIs. PrEP might be a good option if you are having sex that exposes you to HIV, or you are injecting drugs and not always using safe equipment (see pages 4 and 5 for more info on PrEP) STI & HIV testing will help protect your health and the health of your sexual partners. If you’re a man having sex with other men and have multiple partners, it is recommended you get tested up to four times per year. PEP gives you protection in an emergency. Never rely on PEP as your prevention strategy. For more information call TasCAHRD on 03 6234 1242 or visit www.redthread.org.au Based on information provided by the AIDS Action Council.

28

Red thread Magazine - Summer 2020 | TASPRIDE FESTIVAL RE-BOOTS 2021

IT STARTED, AND ENDED, WITH A BANG. A BIG EGGY TEAR GAS DROP-YOUR- GUTS SPECIAL, PRECIPITATING A TEDIOUS GURGLING SHIT. AT 1.21 AM, EXACTLY, SHE WAS BORN FROM THE NETHER REALMS OF MY SPIRALLING BOWELS, INTO THE RATTLING SYNTHS OF A MIDDLING HOBART CLUB. Then, I saw her. I could barely recognise the fine lines of her face and her eyes, warbling, always on the edge of breaking into something. Greta. My first love. She made my heart feel like a throbbing angle grinder. I sprouted for her, like my old housemate’s immaculately tended marijuana plant, tender veins of buoyancy and an inexplicable quivering joy making its way through my limbs.

I left… a note in her locker. Too overwhelmed to write, I drew for her, a primitive imprint of a flower.

The night after my water balloon heart had burst, I awoke with cold sweats. Everybody Would Know. That I had dared- to not only be a lesbian, but to think that someone as beautiful as Greta could ever like me back. Like a dream Greta wafted towards me, past the strobe lights and into the cloud of my fart. “Oh, hey. I remember you from high-” She smiled coolly. “Yeah. I know.” She breezed away. My pungent fart did not follow, instead clinging to every single one of my cells, as if it was trying to comfort me. I felt like I was fourteen again. A dyke too putrid to dream of even rejection. That moment, my friend Zac came back with fistfuls of cider. “Oh phwoar, somebody did a fart.” I nodded, on the verge of tears. He looked into my soul. “Oh hey, don’t worry about it. Let’s go to Flams.” Arm in arm we left, no longer just gremlin gays but instead full souls, content. Red thread Magazine - TASPRIDE FESTIVAL RE-BOOTS 2021

WOOLWORTHS GROUP IS A PROUD TO SUPPORT TASPRIDE AGAIN IN 2021.

Woolworths Group has played an active role in events such as Mardi Gras, Midsumma and Coastal Twist, and Wear it Purple Day is celebrated in all our brands across the country.

As an inclusive, team and customer first company, people are at the core of everything we do. We are working hard to create a welcoming, vibrant, respectful and inclusive environment for our LGBTQ+ team members and customers.

In 2020 Woolworths Group achieved Gold Tier Employer status in the Australian Workplace Equality Index for the third year running, reflecting our continued commitment to creating an inclusive culture.

The Proud at Woolworths Group network consists of individuals who care deeply about inclusion, equality and belonging for all in the workplace. The network is very active and fosters a supportive workplace environment for our LGBTQ+ team members across Australia.

At Woolworths Group we are all about creating better experiences for our team and customers, and are looking forward to once again being a part of the TasPride Festival.

Since the establishment of the Proud at Woolworths Group network, Woolworths has continued to embed LGBTQ+ inclusion in the organisation. Network membership has grown from 50 team members in 2016 to over 2700 team members in 2021.
