The Presidential Scholars selection is based on SAT/ACT scores or nominations from partner organizations. This year’s Scholars include one male and one female from over 5,000 candidates of the 3.7 million graduating seniors nationwide, from each state, D.C., Puerto Rico, and U.S. families abroad, as well as 15 at-large, 20 in the arts, and 20 in career and technical education.
José has achieved numerous accolades, such as AP Scholar with Distinction and National Hispanic Scholar. He has also demonstrated his commitment to environmental marine conservation by co-founding the non-profit
H200/Surfrider Club and volunteering in the community of Los Naranjos. Additionally, he has excelled in athletics as the Varsity Boys’ Volleyball team captain and a selected member of the PRHSAA Volleyball All-Star Alliance. His academic and extracurricular activities showcase his dedication to personal growth and community engagement, such as serving on the Student Council Executive Board, being a member of the Cum Laude Society and National Honor Society, and participating in Model United Nations. He reflects fondly on his time at TASIS Dorado: “I am honored to be named a U.S. Presidential Scholar and represent TASIS and Puerto Rico. It proves that determination can lead to significant accomplishments. I want to thank my parents, family, friends, and teachers for their support throughout my journey, and I couldn’t have done it without them.”
José recognized Dorian López, Ph.D., as his most influential teacher, who has been at TASIS for eight years and is currently teaching several APs, including U.S. and European History, Research, and Macroeconomics.
Dorian’s exceptional teaching skills and dedication have led to the prestigious Distinguished Teacher Recognition Award from the U.S. Department of Education.
Head of School Deborah Monroe praised José Puig as an exceptional student leader who exemplifies kindness, empathy, service orientation, and keen intelligence. “On behalf of the Board of Directors and Administration, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to José Puig on this remarkable and prestigious achievement. His exemplary role model qualities have positively influenced younger students, and undoubtedly, he will continue to make a powerful impact as a leader at Brown University.”
As an engaged global citizen and innovative selfless leader, José truly embodies the mission and profile of a TASIS Dorado graduate. With excitement and anticipation for what’s to come, he embarks on his next chapter, confident in the foundation built through his TASIS Dorado education.
