Super visor : Hannah Cor le tt What is the nature and role of historic sites in cities today? How can these places be understood, and adapted to today’s life? How could we re-use them? What part of their nature should we preserve or forget? The work explores the above concerns through a compositional exercise at such a palimpsest place in the City of London; in the public garden of St. Dunstan in the East, a park in a ruin that stands as what’s been left of the former St. Dunstan in the East Church. The intention here is not simply to preserve the existing, nor to oppose the new layer to the old. The thesis attends to explore how this layer could become a tool for both preserving such an environment and at the same time encouraging further transformation in the future. It is more like a ‘Progressive Preservation’. St Dunstan in the East is proposed to become a new archive centre through a new architectural layer, to become a point of knowledge, of interaction, of spectacle and at the same time, to reveal the essence of memory which is currently in oblivion.

Public spaces are ‘places’ of memories and traces. They are in fact, the ‘depositories’ of public memory. They act as a canvas for the city to record its past and interact through its presence. Memory is expressed in these spaces in multiple ways (statue, event, form, orientation etc). Overall, they summarize the identity of the city, as a palimpsest that is constantly changing. Architecture, as a form of mimesis, often is a tool of revealing what is absent and what needs to be remembered. This project is an exercise of such a case, in a public space where older historic traces are expressed spatially in a new structure [Layer A]. This new structure - acts as a ‘machine’ for defining the new, ephemeral traces [Layer B]. The new space is a recorder, a palimpsest of both its past and its present. The exercise takes place in the Elms of Smithfield, a rounded park (Duke’s Garden) over Smithfield car park which is currently isolated from its surrounding contexts. The park needs to regain its relationship with the city through a new ground (recorder) for new traces - possible memories.

This project is about a re-use of an unfinished construction in Kea island. The client requested a design proposal that would reconstruct the structure in order for it to serve the needs of a summer residence. Given the size of the structure, that appeared to be in no harmony with the landscape, the design intention was to make the house as less evident as possible and at the same time to make almost no alterations to the existing reinforced concrete structure. The design proposes a series of retaining walls (a typical element of the Cycladic landscape) on the ground floor which form the residence’s common spaces. The house is split into two units forming a garden in the middle which is adjusted with the slope, making the landscape part of the outdoor space. On the first floor, tree individual white volumes (the minimum signifier of a home) accommodate the bedrooms demanded by the client and stand as the most evident part of the house. A central swimming area is proposed as a point of relaxation where the gaze meets the ocean.

My involvement with the project was throughout the stages of the survey, the design of the proposal and partly through the construction. Since the client and owner of the place was a highly motivated artist the demand was to create a place of both coffee and art events. This lead to the intention of creating a relatively open and flexible space in order to serve as a coffee place but at the same time to be able to accomodate events, lectures and seminars, and exhibitions. This lead to the idea of compressing all the facilities into a compact space towards the inner wall. A part of a rotated ‘square’ was introduced as an inserted layer 1300 300 to accomodate the coffee bar, the kitchen and the water closet. Further facilities were accommodated in the basement. The central ‘square’ was out of concrete to distinguish itself from 800 the existing space which was left almost untouched. A central element, the coffee bar, was an element introduced made out 3800 of wooden tiles resembling a curtain.

The main intention of design, is to introduce a system of inserted elements, spread in a way that they can act as viewport generators to the dramatic landscape and the historic elements that lay within. The way all volumes are designed, embraces the uniqueness of the nocturnal sky as a basic element, that values observation as a spatial experience, rather than an activity. The main guidelines of the intervention, refer to the observations made on site: The placement of the new dwellings, observatory houses, should stay on the “built ribbon” on the edge of the hill. The fortress settlement and the church are developed on the edge of the high crags of the hill, suggesting an inserted settlement that protects this coherency of built forms. Housing volumes lay on this edge. The insertion of a new centrality within the landscape, chosen strategically on a point that offers wide panoramic view of the settlements, both pre-existing and introduced by design. The introduced buildings are inspired by the structural vocabulary of the rich historic context of the fabric, mainly through study of archive church sections. The element of the arch, is embraced through all introduced interventions.

Type: Architectural Competition SYNTAGMA O M O N I A Competition: Re- Think Athens/ Onnasis foundation Location: Panepistimiou blv, Athens, Greece Partners: Nestoras Skantzouris VICE ORDER Konstantinos Kosmas Pantelis Kampouropoulos Distinction: [Shortlist] Panepistimiou Street is the most important spiritual lane of Athens, a role that has been forgotten by both AtheMONASTIRAKI nians and the street itself, and it connects the two opposing central points; Syntagma Square (order) and Omonoia Square (chaos). Cars hold the major role and high speeds set the pace for both vehicles and pedestrians to pass by with a lowered head. We must return to the citizen or visitor, the ability to walk in a neutral, calm, and solid area of the city, born out of the harmony of nature and construct; to think about the city one wants to live in. This can be achieved by losing the concrete and returning to the city’s original ground, the soil itself, which will bloom through plantation, infrastructure, and networking. The buildings found in the trilogy will get a more important role, externalizing part of their services onto the street axis through boxes of knowledge, which will be placed in relation to the spiritual institutions a few centimeters below the surface of the ground. Klauthmonos Square is transformed in a spherical, green hill, surrounded by a ring of traffic, and is connected to a circular archway that holds an urban garden of multiple uses. The planted hill will operate as a counterweight to the trilogy while remain connected to it via Korai Street, spotlighting the importance of the underground train station. Dikaiosynhs (Justice) Square is the extension of the sidewalk, inviting passersby and citizens to meet in its midst. The graded triangle deposit is the central element, which is used as a water collector for the watering network of the pedestrian precinct. Omonoia Square merges the floor plan of the existing square, with the previous version of a more recognizable circular shape. The water element returns in its center and the ground lanes break out to create short walls that reflect the city and its denizens, becoming the instrument of self-critique, aiming towards the approach of the ideal urban and socially healthy environment we would like to live in.

The object of this work is the study of the city as a complex whole which is being formed over time. The city is the mirror of a society which is evolving and therefore is being transformed in time and so, becomes a palimpsest formed from layers of history. These layers / fragments from different eras coexist and together form the reality of the present and the identity of the society. Unlike the object which is the city, the starting point of this thesis is the meaning of the word “palimpsest” which we will study, and is a metaphor widely used in architecture in order to describe the way the city evolves. Initially, we will refer to the concept of palimpsest and its relationship to architecture in order to understand that the palimpsest describes and refers to a certain kind of construction. Then, this structure is analyzed in order to identify and clarify the characteristics of its various stages and components. Afterwards, we will try to assign all this characteristics on the palimpsest of the city and analyze specific items and actions in time that transform the city into a complex whole. After studying these forms of transformations, the underlying reasons why the city is evolving in such a way and the characteristics of this complex whole, we shall raise the issue of identity as an emerging element of palimpsest which as we will see, “is constructed” along with the palimpsest of the city. Finally, in order to be more specific we shall use these elements of the structure, applying them in three cities. Each one being studied at a time that presents intense transformations, in order to help us distinguish stages of the layering process and how identity is formed through “construction”. This research aims to recognize the dynamic nature of the city and to decipher the fragments of various eras which coexist in its fabric. In a city which remembers its past, which constantly redefines and marks the present and thus, shapes the palimpsest that is the mirror of both its reality and its identity.

Starting with specific traces in the landscape that trigger memory, five interventions are organized around Vathia, regenerating and transferring its meaning to present. Each trace represents an element of the settlement. An observatory encodes the landscape with reference to pirate leading a trek through the gorge towards Vathia. A monolith talks about the stone as an integral part of the landscape and serves as a cistern. A sum of underground sites reveals the original location of the village while at the same time houses a mill. A metal structure inside a military tower refers to local conflicts (Vendetta) through a folklore museum. The result is a series of interventions around the village in a dialectical relationship with it. A palimpsest. A coexistence. NEW LAYER + TRACES OF TIME = NEW CHRONICLE The new topography tells the story of Vathia which is ‘dead’ and of several interventions that guide the visitor to understand different aspect of the settlement. The visitor wanders, the new topography narrates, the “Moiroloi” is taking place and revives Vathia’s memory to present...
