Professional - Residential Tzia [Kea] island, Cyclades +3Architects [Lia Laskaridou] Stages 0-2 https://issuu.com/tasostheodorakakis
This project is about a re-use of an unfinished construction in Kea island. The client requested a design proposal that would reconstruct the structure in order for it to serve the needs of a summer residence. Given the size of the structure, that appeared to be in no harmony with the landscape, the design intention was to make the house as less evident as possible and at the same time to make almost no alterations to the existing reinforced concrete structure. The design proposes a series of retaining walls (a typical element of the Cycladic landscape) on the ground floor which form the residence’s common spaces. The house is split into two units forming a garden in the middle which is adjusted with the slope, making the landscape part of the outdoor space. On the first floor, tree individual white volumes (the minimum signifier of a home) accommodate the bedrooms demanded by the client and stand as the most evident part of the house. A central swimming area is proposed as a point of relaxation where the gaze meets the ocean.

This project was a personal collaboration with AS.P.A. Design architectural office about the re-branding of the retail shops of AVIS & Budget companies in Greece. My collaboration went through the initial stage of the concept until the construction of several retail stores in Greece [Thessaloniki, Mykonos, Corfu, Crete]. The intention of the design team was to create a space where the visitor could start organizing his trip, while at the same time be informed about his current location. Therefore the proposed retail shops were consisted of three main elements: A photography wall, exhibiting a panoramic landscape of the location, a Logo wall [containing the logos of Budget], and an interactive desk in the middle, equipped with tablet devices providing the visitor any information needed before the vehicle rental. This typology of the retail shops could be adapted to any Greek location while at the same time retaining the companies identity.

Professional - Residential Folegandros island, Cyclades +3Architects [Lia Laskaridou] Stages 0-3 https://issuu.com/tasostheodorakakis
Due to the exceptional topography and the open horizon of the site, the house, on one hand, acts as a compass in the clear yet, complex landscape: It highlights the elements on the site redefining their relationship, and on the other hand it becomes a conductor, a ‘path’ of descending the hill through it’s spaces, of descending towards the sea. The resident experiences the house that appears almost as a mass of stone fragments in the landscape when entering from the east side of the site. Three square elements compose the dwelling, each of them serving different needs for the residents. In the interior the house frames and reveals different fragments of the landscape in different areas of the house. The resident experiences a view of the sea and the churchmonastery in the living room, a view of the mountain in the backyard and a view of Mylos island when finally reaching the observatory in the west area of the residence.

This project was a personal collaboration with Nullstellen Laboratory office and architect Eleni Vagianou about the design of a residence in Athens. My involvement was throughout the design of the proposal. Given the significant limitations of the plot, in accordance with the Greek build regulation system, the hull evaluation of the potential building’s height and build area was an essential element of the proposal. As a result, the building was designed as a five-leveled house with an escalator and a central staircase despite the limitations of the build area. In addition, the facade was treated in such way so as to provide maximum amount of direct physical light, with large openings, and at the same time with a vertical garden that would be applied on the facade. Each of the interior spaces designed are evaluating maximum storage space available so as to result a clean, simple and clear space.

My involvement with the project was throughout the stages of the survey, the design of the proposal and partly through the construction. Since the client and owner of the place was a highly motivated artist the demand was to create a place of both coffee and art events. This lead to the intention of creating a relatively open and flexible space in order to serve as a coffee place but at the same time to be able to accomodate events, lectures and seminars, and exhibitions. This lead to the idea of compressing all the facilities into a compact space towards the inner wall. A part of a rotated ‘square’ was introduced as an inserted layer 1300 300 to accomodate the coffee bar, the kitchen and the water closet. Further facilities were accommodated in the basement. The central ‘square’ was out of concrete to distinguish itself from 800 the existing space which was left almost untouched. A central element, the coffee bar, was an element introduced made out 3800 of wooden tiles resembling a curtain.

This project was a personal design proposal which I consulted about the expansion of a nursing home in Athens. The client demanded an extension of the nursing rooms by 32 new beds. This lead immediately to need of a new building extension wing in the adjacent plot of the existing building. Given the building’s role as a ‘home’ the proposal is comprised from a series of elements that could evoke memories of the people living in it. In order for this to be fulfilled spatial qualities are being introduced. A garden with water elements on the ground floor serves as an area of gathering and activities. The balconies provide a clear view between one floor and the other and can evolve dialogue and conversation (a typical element of the Greek city). Large common spaces work as living rooms for gathering with a vertical garden facing them on each level. Further elements such as wood, a pergola are being introduced for similar reasons in various scales.

COMPETITIONS - DISTINCTIONS

The main intention of design, is to introduce a system of inserted elements, spread in a way that they can act as viewport generators to the dramatic landscape and the historic elements that lay within. The way all volumes are designed, embraces the uniqueness of the nocturnal sky as a basic element, that values observation as a spatial experience, rather than an activity. The main guidelines of the intervention, refer to the observations made on site: The placement of the new dwellings, observatory houses, should stay on the “built ribbon” on the edge of the hill. The fortress settlement and the church are developed on the edge of the high crags of the hill, suggesting an inserted settlement that protects this coherency of built forms. Housing volumes lay on this edge. The insertion of a new centrality within the landscape, chosen strategically on a point that offers wide panoramic view of the settlements, both pre-existing and introduced by design. The introduced buildings are inspired by the structural vocabulary of the rich historic context of the fabric, mainly through study of archive church sections. The element of the arch, is embraced through all introduced interventions.

Urban De s i g n i n W. M ac e do n i a, G r e ece Type: Open National Competition Competition: Restoration at the limit of Rehabilita- tion: Reuse of former lignite mining areas in the region of Western Macedonia, Greece Location: Ptolemais,W. Macedonia, Greece Partners: Stavros Kotsikas The“Prometheus Topos”is the proposed park for the Lignite mines in Ptolemais. It is a theme park that refers to the notions of ground and light as its basic design elements. It consists of an open-air museum that exhibits the narrative elements identified in the landscape , while at the same time acts as a mechanism in order to re-arrange and recover the region’s ecosystem. The main act that takes place in the surrounding environment is the mining of lignite soil deposits and their conversion to light energy through certain processes. This act of mining and conversion of soil to light brings in mind spontaneously the myth of Prometheus who feeds man with the energy of fire. The parallelism between the land- scape and the myth, and at the same time the need of a mechanism of “recovering the landscape” leads to the synthesis of the proposal; a park with four [4] landmarks that encourage the visitors movement and exploration of the new landscape. This new topography focuses on the relation between man and the ground. the basic design element of the park is the crack in various scales and form in order to highlight the above relation and notions such as scale, size which are characteristic in the landscape. The Landmarks of the park that organize visitors movement consist of an observatory tower (Prometheus tower), a water park (recovery of water in the site using the boundary stream), an information park (highlighting the soil and its importance), and an area of information about the mining of the area (park of the grindstone which refers to already applied intervention techniques in the landscape). Finally at night the park acts as a big illumination which can be seen widely and refers to the main act that takes place during day.

The historically significant buildings - landmarks have been demolished. Traces of the past, memory fragments, scattered pieces of history are all elements which form identity and self-awareness for the city of Serres. Our intervention is nothing more that to expose and highlight these elements, which already exist and reveal the ones that are hidden. Whithin the boundaries of a new design process the simultaneous presence of these identity elements and of the square (as a place), are synthesizing a new image of the public space. The apocalypse of this “hidden” relationship must be achieved through a new composition as currently the “square” can not be identified either conceptually nor spatially

The “Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre” intends to retrieve the lost relationship between the city and the sea, by inviting the passenger to a ramble in the park. The park’ s inclination imperceptibly leads to its end, which is actually an observatory located at the top of a source of pure knowledge, the national library. The vertical coexistence of the observatory and the source of knowledge turns the visual contact with the sea into a conscious dialectic relationship as knowledge constitutes the basic mean to understand and perceive the surroundings. Focusing on this ascent-wandering our proposal wants to support, imitate and eventually indicate the aforementioned statement through visual contact with the sight from its beginning to its completion. Our idea is to create a temporary interactive space with a view to the building-park and specifically to its southeast side where the ground rises witnessing the architectural gesture in a crystal clear way. It is a dynamic field where the information coexists with the view targeting the deep understanding-observation of the work. The building consists of a volume and a surface, two objects which interact and intersect with each other giving birth to informative activities. It is a volume made in a shell perforated from vertical columns which hosts the program in its interior while at the same time a floor in vertical direction to the original volume is placed which acting as a square penetrates the interior and transforms to a field of knowledge and collective activities. At the point where the volume and the surface intersect, the shell transforms to a number of wide vertical panels where all the amount of information is suspended. These are “moving panels of information” and can be placed anywhere along the surface defining the ground of the amphitheater or acting as exhibition surfaces. At this point the shell spaces out according to the activities and the functions of the center and changes from being the limits of the building to being the carriers of information in and out of the building.

Urban De s i g n in M e ss o l o n g h i , G r e ece Type: Architectural Competition Competition: Exploring the Boundaries: Messolonghi Location: Messolonghi, Greece Partners: Eleni Vagianou Kir iaki Papat hanasopoulou Distinction: [1s t Pr ize] Link: www.exploringtheboundaries.com/ The proposal highlights a particular element of the local tradition, the “gaita”, a small wooden boat, through which, we introduce new ways for the people of co-existence with the water element. Therefore, we design two different spots/places, with the “gaita” as a link. The first intervention is placed on the eastern and the other one on the western coastline, interacting with each other and therefore activating the introspective city center in-between. We propose on the one hand, an industrial, manufacturing and storage space for the “gaita” and on the other one, an urban, water park. As for the industrial center, we design a “hole-aquatic vacuum”, which is penetrated by a canal at the level of the water. A Tower-Observatory, which aspires to become a new landmark for the city, rests at the bottom of the hole and accommodates supportive operations for the center. On the eastern site, the quite larger urban park mainly consists of traditional residences (“pelades”), as well as a “capacitor” of commercial operations. As a result, the new, thick “wall” becomes a collector of the marine park’s public life, a magnet attraction of the city, being in a continuous dialogue with the industrial park in the West. The traditional “gaita” enables this dipole, crossing the city through a water canal that is proposed. Overcoming the brute symbolic correlation of the two interventions, this channel makes their connection direct and functional, while it doesn’t interrupt the circulation throughout the city center.

Quarry Rehabilitation in Tinos island Greece Type: Architectural Competition Organizer: D3 - Housing of Tomorrow Location: Tinos, Cyclades, Greece Partners: Eleni Vagianou Antigoni Ioannou V ic ky Charalam popoulou In ancient Greece the use of marble had been very wide. Marble and stone were the materials that deeply touched the human sensitivity and drove man to the world of aesthetics and symmetry. As the years went by, marble extraction continued at a steady pace, leaving behind numerous quarries, to be found all around the country. Today, even though many of these quarries are still active, there is a growing tendency of abandoning them. Thus, our idea, coming also as a long-term answer to the current economic crisis, focuses on utilizing these undeveloped and morphologically unique sites, building on a dynamic housing and producing interrelationship. More specifically, the inhabitant is given the opportunity to exploit/sell the marble already extracted from the quarry. Then, he lives in the space created through the extraction, further quarrying and continuing thus a smaller scale production. This procedure contributes to the creation of a self-sustainable, viable and autonomous settlement while in parallel revitalizing the famous marble art. We have indicatively applied the aforementioned model of housing in one of the inactive quarries on the island of Tinos, Greece, a place with deep-rooted tradition in marble art and stone-carving and an interesting landscape. However, the potential of the proposal lies in its feature to be applicable in a flexible and adjustable manner to similar cases of other inoperative quarry sites, aiming at re-shaping them into viable entities, profitable to their inhabitants.

Type: Architectural Competition SYNTAGMA O M O N I A Competition: Re- Think Athens/ Onnasis foundation Location: Panepistimiou blv, Athens, Greece Partners: Nestoras Skantzouris VICE ORDER Konstantinos Kosmas Pantelis Kampouropoulos Distinction: [Shortlist] Panepistimiou Street is the most important spiritual lane of Athens, a role that has Mbeen by both AtheO N A Sforgotten TIRAKI nians and the street itself, and it connects the two opposing central points; Syntagma Square (order) and Omonoia Square (chaos). Cars hold the major role and high speeds set the pace for both vehicles and pedestrians to pass by with a lowered head. We must return to the citizen or visitor, the ability to walk in a neutral, calm, and solid area of the city, born out of the harmony of nature and construct; to think about the city one wants to live in. This can be achieved by losing the concrete and returning to the city’s original ground, the soil itself, which will bloom through plantation, infrastructure, and networking. The buildings found in the trilogy will get a more important role, externalizing part of their services onto the street axis through boxes of knowledge, which will be placed in relation to the spiritual institutions a few centimeters below the surface of the ground. Klauthmonos Square is transformed in a spherical, green hill, surrounded by a ring of traffic, and is connected to a circular archway that holds an urban garden of multiple uses. The planted hill will operate as a counterweight to the trilogy while remain connected to it via Korai Street, spotlighting the importance of the underground train station. Dikaiosynhs (Justice) Square is the extension of the sidewalk, inviting passersby and citizens to meet in its midst. The graded triangle deposit is the central element, which is used as a water collector for the watering network of the pedestrian precinct. Omonoia Square merges the floor plan of the existing square, with the previous version of a more recognizable circular shape. The water element returns in its center and the ground lanes break out to create short walls that reflect the city and its denizens, becoming the instrument of self-critique, aiming towards the approach of the ideal urban and socially healthy environment we would like to live in.

Due to the particular topography of the area it shows to advantage that the basic planning concept would be to mark out the special relationship between man and volcano as the main exhibit. Architecture comes to bridge this relationship by imposing a unique structure that in itself will be part of the whole scene and which will also act as a catalyst for the decoding of the many secrets of its crust. The museum will become a landmark for the area, a museum that both observes the topography but also at the same time is being observed ! The placement, the plan, and the pure geometry of the structure bring to the surface attributes such as the view, light and Shade , deepness and Elation, necessary for the assimilation of the whole concept . An horizontal strolling of the museum visitors is assisted by two rolling passageways, which allow freedom to the Visitor to move in all directions thus enabling him to discover and acquire knowledge, but also the conveniently facilitated Research areas transform the museum in to a Venue of Scientific dialogue!

Academic/ Major Project St Dunstan in the East, London UK
Super visor : Hannah Cor le tt What is the nature and role of historic sites in cities today? How can these places be understood, and adapted to today’s life? How could we re-use them? What part of their nature should we preserve or forget? The work explores the above concerns through a compositional exercise at such a palimpsest place in the City of London; in the public garden of St. Dunstan in the East, a park in a ruin that stands as what’s been left of the former St. Dunstan in the East Church. The intention here is not simply to preserve the existing, nor to oppose the new layer to the old. The thesis attends to explore how this layer could become a tool for both preserving such an environment and at the same time encouraging further transformation in the future. It is more like a ‘Progressive Preservation’. St Dunstan in the East is proposed to become a new archive centre through a new architectural layer, to become a point of knowledge, of interaction, of spectacle and at the same time, to reveal the essence of memory which is currently in oblivion.

Public spaces are ‘places’ of memories and traces. They are in fact, the ‘depositories’ of public memory. They act as a canvas for the city to record its past and interact through its presence. Memory is expressed in these spaces in multiple ways (statue, event, form, orientation etc). Overall, they summarize the identity of the city, as a palimpsest that is constantly changing. Architecture, as a form of mimesis, often is a tool of revealing what is absent and what needs to be remembered. This project is an exercise of such a case, in a public space where older historic traces are expressed spatially in a new structure [Layer A]. This new structure - acts as a ‘machine’ for defining the new, ephemeral traces [Layer B]. The new space is a recorder, a palimpsest of both its past and its present. The exercise takes place in the Elms of Smithfield, a rounded park (Duke’s Garden) over Smithfield car park which is currently isolated from its surrounding contexts. The park needs to regain its relationship with the city through a new ground (recorder) for new traces - possible memories.

Super visor : Hannah Cor le tt Partners: Julen Aguinagalde Martina Reichenbach Distinction: [Scor e 85/100] Link: mentioned in: bdonline.co.uk Soho’s character is defined by the density of the fabric and the population. The neighborhood has been one of the most highly populated areas since the 17th century, when the parish was established. since then, the fabric has retained its original shape of narrow street and dense blocks. Soho is diverse in its forms of colonization and its environments due to the multicultural background of its inhabitants throughout history. The multicultural character and the interaction of different communities forced Soho to have a particular combination of streets and urban space. The intention of the design proposal is not to impose a character to Soho or to make eye catching, meaningless or cosmetic interventions, which would radically transform the personality of Soho. From the very beginning, the idea was to create a response to particular situations that affect the ecosystems of Soho, making surgical proposals to solve them without disturbing or modifying the natural transformation of Soho’s character. What makes Soho what it is, are the agents that colonize it and not the architectural interventions occurred throughout history. The designing proposals are not spectacular Museums that aim to transform, a piece of city with a single project. In fact, the aim is not to transform it, but to contribute to its spirit by suggesting diverse, original and colorful interventions. These interventions give answers to current problems and predicted future transformations including the impact of the crossrail project in the Eastern part of Soho. The interventions do not intend to enable an easier navigation through Soho – losing the labyrinthine feeling of being lost – they contribute to its dense character preserving the maze. The following research explains the aspired goals and specifies the character of the neighborhood and finally, the interventions create ideas of enhancing Soho’s beauty. The projects that compose the global intervention are not directly connected with each other. in a certain way the are all connected with Soho and Soho with the interventions.

Starting with specific traces in the landscape that trigger memory, five interventions are organized around Vathia, regenerating and transferring its meaning to present. Each trace represents an element of the settlement. An observatory encodes the landscape with reference to pirate leading a trek through the gorge towards Vathia. A monolith talks about the stone as an integral part of the landscape and serves as a cistern. A sum of underground sites reveals the original location of the village while at the same time houses a mill. A metal structure inside a military tower refers to local conflicts (Vendetta) through a folklore museum. The result is a series of interventions around the village in a dialectical relationship with it. A palimpsest. A coexistence. NEW LAYER + TRACES OF TIME = NEW CHRONICLE The new topography tells the story of Vathia which is ‘dead’ and of several interventions that guide the visitor to understand different aspect of the settlement. The visitor wanders, the new topography narrates, the “Moiroloi” is taking place and revives Vathia’s memory to present...

CITY - PALIMPSEST - IDENTITY

The object of this work is the study of the city as a complex whole which is being formed over time. The city is the mirror of a society which is evolving and therefore is being transformed in time and so, becomes a palimpsest formed from layers of history. These layers / fragments from different eras coexist and together form the reality of the present and the identity of the society. Unlike the object which is the city, the starting point of this thesis is the meaning of the word “palimpsest” which we will study, and is a metaphor widely used in architecture in order to describe the way the city evolves. Initially, we will refer to the concept of palimpsest and its relationship to architecture in order to understand that the palimpsest describes and refers to a certain kind of construction. Then, this structure is analyzed in order to identify and clarify the characteristics of its various stages and components. Afterwards, we will try to assign all this characteristics on the palimpsest of the city and analyze specific items and actions in time that transform the city into a complex whole. After studying these forms of transformations, the underlying reasons why the city is evolving in such a way and the characteristics of this complex whole, we shall raise the issue of identity as an emerging element of palimpsest which as we will see, “is constructed” along with the palimpsest of the city. Finally, in order to be more specific we shall use these elements of the structure, applying them in three cities. Each one being studied at a time that presents intense transformations, in order to help us distinguish stages of the layering process and how identity is formed through “construction”. This research aims to recognize the dynamic nature of the city and to decipher the fragments of various eras which coexist in its fabric. In a city which remembers its past, which constantly redefines and marks the present and thus, shapes the palimpsest that is the mirror of both its reality and its identity.

Formerly the city walls were allocating a very specific area that was protected and habitable. Our effort is based on the creation of a new fence and whether the new wall can be inhabited in its interior. It is therefore a complex of houses in the castle of Patra, the site of which is below the castle. The basic idea is the continuation of the walls and trying to create a model of living within them. On the occasion of some basic alignments the new wall is being shaped which creates special runs either side of the building (groves, squares, paths to the old aqueduct which is reshaped), underground parking and living spaces. The units vary in types of occupation and size and provide outdoors with a special treatment of natural light. The walls skin consists of two elements which result (in low light) for anyone to recognize the building as two different scales, that of the total wall and that of residence.

Initially we started with a research about the universe. If anyone tries to get to know better the world, eventually, he would find himself wandering in a vast range of scales... The idea for the museum of astronomy and science started from a diagram showing the mapped and uncharted universe, an attempt by scientists to define the known universe, setting for it a new ‘size’. We choose, therefore, this image and express it with two curves which will be the starting point of our design and based on which will be organized function well as movement in the museum. The tour of the visitor is characterized by this constant change of the scale and magnitude of the relationship between him and the two curves. The entrance to the building is the square located to the east of the site. The dense plantation reveals a passage which leads to the sea, whereas a floor of black marble takes the visitor to a journey of entering the museum, towards the same direction. Being confronted with the two curves, and the flour being slightly arched the visitor meets a new world of scale and size. He then comes across a red sphere. It is the entrance for the museum...
