I
’ll never forget the very first message I ever preached at my first meeting many years ago. I remember asking God what He wanted me to say, and His reply to me was, “Tell them I love them.”
I admit at first I wasn’t very excited about it. I thought, Everybody knows that! I felt like God was asking me to teach a sweet little “Jesus loves me, this I know” Sunday school lesson. I was expecting it to be something “deeper” than that.

All those years ago, when I thought I needed to start my ministry by preaching some deep, powerful, life-changing sermon, even then God was only interested in establishing this ministry on His love for His people. Ever since, that’s what we’ve been doing—Sharing Christ and Loving People.

The Bible says God is love. It’s not just something He does, it’s who He is. Everything He does is based on love. His mercy and grace are poured out on us every single day because of His love. He comforts us when we’re hurting and corrects us when we need it because He loves us. Even when He doesn’t give us something we think we really want or need, it is because He loves us and knows what is best according to His purpose and plan for our lives.

Well, I learned that not everyone is so secure in God’s love for them. In fact, there is an epidemic of insecurity in our society these days. And I believe it is because people just don’t know how much they are loved by God. As I preached the message that day, I noticed people were just weeping and weeping. It seemed as though many of them had been longing to hear the simple truth, “God loves you.”
But what has not changed is the message: the Gospel of Jesus Christ— the ultimate expression of God’s love for us. Sending Jesus to die for the sin of the world firmly established this truth: God…loves…you. And that truth will never change. We just try to find as many ways to say it as we can! Also over the years, our friends and partners have played a large part in spreading this simple but powerful message of God’s love.
Every day we can tell someone He loves them by what we do as well as what we say.

You have been part of all this and so much more. That is God’s love in action. I believe when He said tell them I love them, that is what He had in mind. Love is expressed in words and actions. We can tell someone we love them…but even better than that is to show them through our actions.
As we prepare to make the transition into a new year, I pray that each of you will grow more and more secure in the knowledge of God’s love for you…and as you do, the overflow of His love in your hearts will spill over onto others in your homes, churches, communities—and the world.

At our conferences throughout the year, you have supplied much needed items for our Supply Hope outreaches. And we’re also thankful to the medical professionals who volunteered their time and talents throughout this year. These people traveled with us, at their own expense, to remote areas of the world on our medical outreaches to help relieve some of the suffering of those who otherwise might never be reached.
This holiday season is a perfect time to show God’s love! So I encourage you, not only now but every day, to look for ways and opportunities to be a blessing to someone around you. Ask the Holy Spirit for creative ideas for specific individuals. This is how we spread His love.

Her words had me riveted. She struggled to share her story with me and nearly couldn’t make it through. There came a point that she melted into my arms, tears choking off the syllables. As she clung to me and cried, her life permanently became a part of mine—I would never forget her pain or the grace of God that set her free.

Our stories are powerful. When we share a story or listen to someone else’s, we connect in a uniquely personal way. That’s one of the reasons Jesus told parables, or more simply put, stories. He was a master at drawing people in and teaching lessons in a way that they would remember.

One of the largest blessings I have here at Joyce Meyer Ministries is the honor of sharing stories with you— stories of changed lives and overwhelming joy as well as those of great difficulty and sorrow.
An honor, absolutely, but a task that is not always easy. People pour out the intimate details of their heart, tragic life circumstances, abuse, unfathomable suffering and absolute horrors. I have at times asked God why He has shown me so many terrible things. I have visited many countries ravaged by war and genocide, people ruthlessly and pointlessly destroying one another…Rwanda, Cambodia, Uganda, Kosova to name a few. I have literally sat among the bones of the murdered, stood at the rim of mass graves, and walked the paths which once led to kill sites. These are things you never forget. Countless people have shared their stories and I have listened. The girl who I began this article telling you about is named Pretty. She spent three years living on the streets, surviving unspeakable things, when she was only 10 years old. There is Emmanuel, who lay in a pool of his own blood, helpless as he watched each member of his family die one by one in a Rwandan mass murder.

Beyond each of these heartbreaking stories there is redemption and peace that only comes through Christ. Oh, what we miss if we don’t hold on for the good at the end of the story!
To this day Emmanuel stays at the site of that atrocity, caring for the grounds and sharing his story to keep the memory of his beloved family alive. He says his purpose is to keep other people from repeating the mistakes made in his country— he is working to save lives. Natalia is now in a home where she is safe from her captors and surrounded by loving people for the first time in her life. And Nancy contributes her wholeness and healing to a God, who loves her no matter what her earthly father has said and done. She knows who she is in Christ.
I understand all too clearly that it’s very difficult for many people to hear such stories…that this is rough stuff that breaks our heart or brings our own painful memories to the surface. But when God gives you the opportunity to listen and help, don’t turn away. He will strengthen and equip you. Our challenge is not to grow calloused or squeamish but to be His ears as we listen and His arms as we respond in love. The simple fact is that there are too many people in the world who feel heartbroken and damaged to ignore their stories. You may be one of them, and God wants you to know that your story matters too. Oh, what you’ll miss if you don’t hold on for the good at the end of the story!

I have learned that people desperately need us to listen, to be broken with them and to respond with Christ’s mercy and grace. Often that is their primary need – to see in our eyes the God who weeps with them and longs to heal. That is why God tells us in Galatians 6:2 to “bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (NKJV).

On the outside Nancy’s family looked the all-American dream. Behind closed doors this precious little girl was called “worthless,” chained to a table, beaten and starved. She shared the truth few people could see.
I can recount hundreds of such stories. The memories of each are forever with me and still send tears down my face. Yes, I may rather tell stories of laughter, puppies and sunshine, but I no longer ask God why He has shown me such difficult things—instead I count each one of them as gifts.

I’ve been married to Dave Meyer for more than forty-five years, and there are a lot of things I know about his character. For example, Dave is a very patient man with an easygoing personality and he is very easy to get along with. A happy result of being in relationship with Dave is that it has helped me become more patient and easygoing too. So just imagine what spending time with God can do for you!

Many men and women throughout the Bible made it their mission to know God. Paul actually called it “his determined purpose” (see Philippians 3:10). King David said what he wanted most in life was to seek God and behold the wonders of His beauty (see Psalm 27).

The word seek means “to crave, pursue and go after.” By seeking God for themselves, Paul and David came to know the essence of His character. They fell deeply in love with God and wanted to be like Him. We can also fall deeply in love with Him if we choose to seek Him in our lives. Today I want to share with you one aspect of God’s character that I’ve come to know and love. It has helped me tremendously in my relationship with Him, with myself and with other
people. It is simply this: God is the God of justice.
God Makes Wrong Things Right If you have heard me share my testimony before, then you probably know that in the early years of my life, I had a lot of things happen to me that were totally unjust and unfair. I was sexually abused by my father, abandoned by my mother, and repeatedly rejected by my first husband who ended up leaving me for another woman. My life was a complete mess then, and it stayed a mess until I turned my life over to God. Then, little by little, He began to bring justice into my life. God wants justice for all of us. He wants to be that hero in our lives who makes wrong things right. And He does even better than that. His Word actually says that He gives us double for our trouble. Isaiah 61:7-8 says, Instead of your [former] shame you shall have a twofold recompense; instead of dishonor and reproach [your people] shall rejoice in their portion. Therefore in their land they shall possess double [what they had forfeited]; everlasting joy shall be theirs. For I the Lord love justice…and I will faithfully give them their recompense in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant or league with them.

When we are wronged, God asks us to forgive quickly and completely. We need to allow Him to be our vindicator. When we do, we can be assured that God will bring justice in our life. I encourage you to seek God’s Word for wisdom and comfort. Bring your wounds before God in prayer and ask Him to fill you up with an overflowing of His love so you can forgive those who have mistreated you. Through that experience, you will come to know God more than ever before. And He will make you more loving and forgiving, like Him.
The Flip Side of God’s Justice There’s another side to the justice of God that we need to know about: We can’t mistreat anybody else and get by with it.

I still have a long way to go, but I’ve come a long way. And I’ve learned not to be discouraged about how far I have to go. Instead, I’m excited about how far I’ve come. Aren’t you glad God calls people who aren’t perfect and then changes us while we’re making the journey? God is full of mercy, especially when we’re ignorant of our mistakes. But we can open up a whole world of blessings in Christ if we just decide to live a little bit higher. If you’re going to walk with God for the rest of your journey, get all you can out of your relationship with Him. Be a seeker and you will fall so in love with Jesus that you will put yourself in a position where God can bless you radically and outrageously. It is only in close relationship with Him that you can live a life that brings glory to His name.
I like the fact that God is fair. Not only will He give me double for my trouble, He won’t let me live a junky life and get by with it. That lets me know He loves me.

The Bible says God chastens us and tells us our faults because He loves us (see Hebrews 12:6). And we need to change and do whatever it takes to straighten things out in our relationship with God because one day, we will all stand before Him and give an account of our life (see Romans 14:12). God knows your heart. He’s merciful. He’s full of grace and love. He’s long-suffering. God knows we will never stop making mistakes, and still blesses us and is good to us and forgives us time after time. We also need to be good and gracious and loving to other people.

Of all the people Jesus talked to in a firm way, it was the religious people— the people who said one thing and did something else. The churchgoers who led sloppy lives behind closed doors. He called them “whitewashed tombs” because they looked good on the outside but on the inside, were filled with dead men’s bones (see Matthew 23:27).

We arrived in Cambodia through its capital city, Phnom Penh, but our destination—the Hand of Hope Health Center in Pursat—was a five-hour drive away. After about an hour, our view of bustling city streets filled with whole families aboard single motorcycles gave way to a scene of endless rice fields on both sides of our van.

As the landscape outside the window continued to change before us, my mind wandered back to the horrors that occurred from 1975 to 1979 during a genocide that set Cambodia back almost a full century…

knew it. With the severe loss of doctors, healthcare has been one of the industries slowest to recover. Because of this, Joyce Meyer Ministries established the Hand of Hope Health Center in Pursat, Cambodia.

paired with ineffectual treatment. When a team from Joyce Meyer Ministries visited Cambodia in 2007, they witnessed this crisis firsthand and the vision for the Hand of Hope Health Center was born.
Left Alone After the Genocide Ma Khat is one of many in Cambodia who wouldn’t have access to healthcare if it weren’t for the Health Center. She is 65 years old, but her frail frame and lined face suggest a longer journey. Her deep brown eyes, tender but skeptical, locked on us as we approached the facility. Then our smiles were returned kindly as she placed her palms together in a prayer-like fashion in Cambodia’s traditional sampeah greeting, welcoming us to join her.
These atrocities, so recent in world history, claimed almost a third of Cambodia’s population: most of which were doctors, lawyers, teachers and other professionals helping to lead the nation. To this day, survivors still struggle to restore life as they once
Although she never had the opportunity to have children of her own, she reminds me of a sweet grandmother whose feet you want to sit at and listen to stories for hours on end. Like millions of other Cambodians, 1975 ushered in devastation and loss for Ma Khat. The Pol Pot regime took the life of the man she loved, and she never remarried. While time has eased the pain and there’s a notable peace about her, the loss of her husband is one story she keeps filed away. Instead, she wanted to talk about why she came to the Hand of Hope Health Center.

It was April 1975. In the course of one day, children who had been playing happily in the streets outside their homes were marched with their families out of the city at gunpoint by Khmer Rouge soldiers. These very same roads we traveled now were the ones that led thousands upon thousands of innocent victims to starvation, torture and execution in Cambodia’s now infamous Killing Fields.

And as the news of free care continues to spread throughout the circles of the poor, the number of patients grows rapidly. “I became a doctor because I wanted to help the poor,” explained Dr. Chaorey Sok, who works at the Health Center. “Many who go to the state hospital or private owned facilities have had to sell all their property to pay the doctor bills. Now they come here and get well for free.” Tuberculosis, malaria, high blood pressure and diabetes are among the most common illnesses treated. In addition to the setbacks in education within Cambodia’s healthcare, the general populace has also been deprived of basic wellness information for themselves.

She’d Never Seen a Doctor With her tiny hands folded in her lap, Ma Khat patiently waited for her prescribed blood-pressure medicine from the on-site pharmacy. Her feet dangled just above the floor in a childlike
Ma Khat knows this well. She’s now been coming regularly for treatment for a year and a half.
While we refer to the facility here in Pursat, Cambodia, as the Hand of Hope Health Center, the loving communication paired with medical care has inspired those in the surrounding community to establish a different name for it—the Jesus Hospital. We don’t mind that at all, and we think our partners would agree. Thank you for providing much needed care in a nation that has suffered so greatly, and for bringing the love of Jesus to the hearts of so many. The word attend means “to pay attention to; to give time to something.” To attend to the Word of God is a lot more than just reading it; it’s meditating on it. When you need direction, an encouraging word or you’re in a negative environment, it’s good to know that you can find life, healing and health in God’s Word. The Bible is no ordinary book. The words within its pages are like medicine to your soul. It has the power to change your life because there is life in the Word! (See Hebrews 4:12.) And when you discover the power and truth of God’s Word, you will begin to see changes in your life that only this truth can bring. You will even learn how to recognize what the enemy tries to bring against you.
What Do I Study? — There’s really no wrong place to start. You can study anything that’s going to help you. If you’re dealing with anger or fear, use a concordance and locate those words to see which scriptures talk about those things. If you can’t think of anything right away, thumb through a concordance and pick one of the words. Begin looking at all scriptures referenced with this word and read them. Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you, and He’ll help you and reveal things to you. When I first started studying the Word, I didn’t have very good relationships. I didn’t really understand what love was. As I studied the subject of love, I learned it’s more than a gooey feeling; it’s a decision you make to treat people the way God would treat them. I didn’t know how to love people, or myself. By studying what the Bible says about love, I learned how to love. Then my life began to change. Being able to apply what you study in God’s Word to your life, like I did on the subject of love, is just one picture of what studying the Bible looks like.

Four Effective Steps to Studying the Bible I want to share some practical things you can do to help you get started or make your time in the Word more effective. 1. Purposely set aside time. I make an appointment with God in the mornings, but if that doesn’t work for you, find a time that does…even if it’s not every day. Whatever you can do, that’s what you need to do. Just start somewhere and you’ll see the benefits this time will bring to your life! 2. Make preparation for your Bible study. Choose a place where you enjoy relaxing and can study— a room in your house where you can be alone or somewhere you are comfortable. 3. Have all your materials available. You’ll want your Bible, of course, but also get a good Bible dictionary, concordance, a pen and paper. That way, you don’t have to stop every few minutes to go get something. 4. Prepare your heart. Talk to God about things you may need to confess. Enter your study time peacefully and without anything that may block you from receiving revelation during your time with Him. I want to encourage you to make the time to study because the Word has the power to change your life and help you become the person God wants you to be. No matter when you do it, or how long you do it, God’s Word will always make a difference.

COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY is in the heart of New York City. It’s also one of only eight Ivy League schools in the United States. It’s so prestigious that of the nearly 30,000 applications they received last year only 6 percent were accepted.1 But even though the odds were against her, Eboni Boykin was determined to be a part of that 6 percent.
The Odds Were Against Her — When her mom, Lakista, was 17, she became pregnant with Eboni. Kicked out of her house, with nowhere to go, they entered their first homeless shelter. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t be their last.
She was in the seventh grade when a TV show birthed the dream of going to a school like Columbia. People immediately told her it couldn’t be done—for children in her circumstances rarely reach goals like this. But five years later she defied the odds and achieved acceptance to the school in spite of the many struggles she faced along the way. Not only did she get accepted, she also received a full scholarship.
When Things Got Really Bad — At one point it seemed things were turning around for them when Lakista’s new boyfriend invited them to live in his home. But she quickly found herself in an abusive relationship. It wasn’t long before the abuse forced Lakista to sneak her children out in the middle of the night. They found themselves, once again, in a homeless shelter.
Over the years Eboni’s family went from shelter to shelter and school to school, with long periods of time living in their car in between.
For a while, it seemed life would never get better. But all of that changed when the family decided

She says the Dream Center encouraged her love of school and determination to succeed. Every Saturday, they would send a bus to pick Eboni and other children up from the shelter to attend their weekly children’s ministry, which combines fun, food and a Bible study. It was during these weekly events that Eboni learned about Christ and says she was able to connect with God on her own and became encouraged to pursue her dream.
“I feel a greater destiny. I don’t feel the need to attach myself to everything I’ve been through because I know it’s going to be different. I’m glad God [didn’t let me] be attached to this. Being homeless is never going to happen again. I’m never going to be without food again. I’m about to get a great education, and I’m going to get a good job, and I’m going to be okay now.”
“With the Dream Center bringing me into contact with people who really love God and instilling that in me…that was important with my school work and even setting the goal of going to college. Because I could now think I can do anything through Christ who strengthens me instead of I live in this shelter and that’s it.”
Her greatest desire is to use this opportunity to pursue a career that will help others realize their God-given potential and know they don’t have to be defined by their beginnings. With God’s help, a person really can do anything they set their mind to—no matter the odds against them.
THE FOOD PANTRY: Each month this outreach provides tens of thousands of meals to families in St. Louis.

She worked on the newspaper and was a varsity cheerleader…all things that would help her chances of being accepted.

Pursuing a Greater Destiny — No matter what adversity she faced, nothing could stop this young lady. When Eboni’s new life began at Columbia in the fall of 2012, she knew she could pursue her new future with confidence. Thanks to God’s presence in her life, the support of her family and church, and her sheer determination, she knew even a homeless child could have a great future—despite how unlikely it may have seemed.

Ephesians 4:15 says, Rather, let our lives lovingly express truth [in all things, speaking truly, dealing truly, living truly]. Enfolded in love, let us grow up in every way and in all things into Him Who is the Head, [even] Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One). Now, this scripture is not saying you should just go around telling people what’s wrong with them or how they need to change. Speaking the truth without love is damaging to a relationship and almost impossible to receive. Love without truth isn’t really love, because it doesn’t help anybody. It is actually more about protecting yourself, not the person you’re in relationship with. I’m talking about speaking the truth in love with a heart motivation to really help someone.

People tell me they appreciate my transparency and straightforward honesty. They say things like, “Joyce, you don’t mess around—you tell it like it is. You speak the truth and don’t hold back.” While this is true, it’s not always easy to be this way.
because even though it would help the relationship, it’s awkward and hard to do. In those moments, I’d much rather just say whatever I need to say to keep things from getting uncomfortable. But God won’t let me live that way, because that attitude isn’t loving—it’s selfish.

Maybe you know someone who is bitter, angry, frustrated or living a miserably religious life. You could choose to say nothing because you’re worried you will only make them mad, or you could yell at them for being so stupid. Imagine experiencing peace that comes from knowing there are no more “elephants” in the room that everyone’s avoiding. No more of the phoniness and playing games that are a result of unhealthy, toxic relationships. How different would your life be if your relationships looked like this? Once you begin to experience this level of honest intimacy, you won’t be able to settle for anything less. Having healthy relationships is not always easy. But even the most rocky, awkward, painful ones can turn out great if you’re willing to work on establishing communication that’s transparent, honest and loving. As we approach the end of 2012, Dave and I are praying you will receive the gift of genuine, authentic relationships. God designed your life for abundant, fulfilling joy and His desire is that you walk in it every day. Trust Him to help you develop genuine, healthy relationships—one conversation at a time. Attitude The little thing that makes a big difference

Certainly aptitude is important to our success in life. Yet, success or failure in any undertaking can more often be traced back to mental attitude than mental capacity. I remember when my wife Margaret was a schoolteacher. She would often come home frustrated with the emphasis in modern education on aptitude over attitude. If she’d had her way, the kids would have been tested on their A.Q. (attitude quotient) at least as often as they were tested in their I.Q. (intelligence quotient). Every year she would talk of students whose I.Q. was high, yet their performance was low. And every year, she would have students whose I.Q. wasn’t particularly high, but their performance was.

History’s greatest achievements have been made by men and women who excelled only slightly over the masses of others in their fields. Many times, the difference was attitude. The former Israeli prime minister Golda Meir underlined this truth in one of her interviews. She said, “All my country
has is spirit. We don’t have petroleum dollars. We don’t have mines of great wealth in the ground. We don’t have the support of a worldwide public opinion that looks favorably on us. All Israel has is the spirit of its people. “
There is very little difference in people, but that little difference makes a big difference. The little difference is attitude. The big difference is whether it is positive or negative.
