Discipline, a great shield in life Saturday, 29 October 2011 18:19
By Muyeche Chrispen ‘Teach yourself, to always do what is necessary no matter how difficult it may seem.” If achieving greatness was an easy task to accomplish, then there would be so little satisfaction derived in realising it. Success is not easy to accomplish, there is a great price that one has to pay in order to attain it. Anyone entertaining any hope of successfully accomplishing a dream, any dream or goal, however big or small, will have to learn to live by discipline for without it those dreams and aspirations can never be fully accomplished.
Discipline entails teaching yourself to do what is right all the time, no matter how difficult and painful it may be rather than settling for what is simple and easy. Usually, the necessary steps for significant progress require great toiling and demand so much sweating. The average person would seek to avoid, evade and flee from such “pain’’, which is why fewer people, who possess the stamina to stay with challenges a lot longer, are the ones who eventually finish the good fight and win the prize. By embracing discipline, you advance your dreams in a gigantic way and immensely increase the probability of their eventual accomplishment.
Discipline yourself, to live by a code, to always do what is right and necessary, to stop at nothing in the long journey of the accomplishment of your vision. Staying up late and waking up early is never easy but it is necessary. Employ what I refer to as the Maximum Benefit Strategy (MBS) — at every time and every moment, sincerely ask yourself what is it that you need to do in order to obtain the maximum benefit and greatest advancement towards the fulfilment of your dreams. You must not waste time, go straight to work and do exactly that regardless of the many temptations that may seek to derange you from the right path.
Discipline may often entail separating yourself from other people, missing a couple of TV programmes or foregoing a chill out in the city with your friends. Make your vision your key friend and spend a lot of time together with it, pursuing it, labouring and burning the midnight oil. Anything that seeks to derail and separate you from the full accomplishment of aspirations is not good for you and dilutes your focus from the central goal.

There is, however, a need for you to strike a balance in all the spheres of your life so that no single area ends up neglected. There is a time for everything, and knowing when to do what is essential in the full accomplishment of your dreams and this is in the real sense, the true definition of discipline. When it is time for family, it is time for family and nothing should come between you and spending quality time with your family.
Discipline requires that you have an ability to focus on a particular action 100 percent, with your full commitment as if all the other areas of your life did not exist. When it is time to move from one field of work to another, then move and focus on that new task. Train yourself to have the ability to focus on a goal and see it through with your enduring commitment.
Train yourself to value your time and to employ your every minute in the best manner possible. The good thing with making a conscious decision to do what is right all the time is that when you do it long enough, it will come out of you naturally, it will eventually be your nature, it will define who you are and it will shape your ultimate habits. Discipline is your great shield . . .
Discipline is good for you because it keeps you out of trouble, protects you from incurring debt and shields you from a feeling of worthlessness. It is when you do not really have anything meaningful to do that you end up buying items that you do not really need or saying things that you stand to eventually regret. Discipline is a safeguard that keeps people admiring you and connects you to other people and resources that can tremendously advance the accomplishment of everything you seek to achieve. Extend your discipline to mean also spending your monetary resources on the real responsibilities that are necessary and fundamental. There is no reward that goes to a person who seeks to obtain immediate pleasantries at the expense of the bigger picture — the bigger vision. It is an awful lack of discipline to squander the seed that delivers the fruit.
Discipline preserves your life and saves you from disease — it gives better meaning to life. Discipline pushes you towards carrying out all those actions that are necessary if you are to evade greater pain in the future. For example, brushing your teeth shields you from the pain of decayed teeth. Abstaining from sexual activity in the days of your youth and faithfulness in the days of your marriage prolong your life and keep you from contracting sexually transmitted diseases. It is that straightforward.
