Keep your momentum. . .

Motivation for Success Chrispen Muyeche The journey to greatness is long and meandering, it is full of twists and turns that require finely tuned manoeuvring and route planning. Usually when one sets on a journey in pursuit of some desired result, they set sail with great enthusiasm and a good deal of energy. What often happens in my life as well as in yours is that challenges then occur, obstacles mushroom and proclivities surface. When challenges present their unattractive heads, momentum falls, that energy and zeal that characterised the initial pursuit begins to vanish like the early morning dew in the face of a rising sun. So, many aspirations never met the day of their fulfilment because as individuals we fail to keep our momentum going. Getting your initial momentum is one thing; keeping it is another. It is in keeping momentum that the difference between greatness and the lack of it is defined. If you aspire to complete the race and win the prize, you will need to keep your momentum. Renew your momentum Each morning when you rise up from bed, before you commit any energy to action, remind yourself of the reasons why you need to achieve a specific goal and why it is important for you to take action today that contributes towards the full accomplishment of that specific goal. Doing this day by day renews your momentum. It is easy to be misguided by the on-goings of our busy cities and hectic schedules that often we do nothing that propels the bigger picture. Life can be such a routine and one can easily get used to a routine that is not value adding. It does you great good to commit just five minutes of every morning to renewing your commitment to a specific goal and re-energising yourself towards its fulfilment. You can do this by actually speaking to yourself, literally speaking aloud, words that boost your momentum bar. For example, you can say: “I have accomplished my Masters in Business Administration with outstanding grades. I study hard and reap my deserved rewards.” One can choose to say this four times or five times before moving to a different goal. Pick a Mentor This is one excellent way of keeping on track and gathering pace. Having a mentor is in a way of having an external force that pushes you on when you slumber. Mentors are individuals who have achieved what you seek to achieve. These are people who have travelled the high road and achieved a considerable measure of practical, visible success in their own lives. You need to be open with your mentor and tell them the plans that you have and the time line upon which you seek to achieve specified goals. Mentors will both affirm you and rebuke you; they identify potential potholes before you punch into them. Learn from the wisdom of other people, desire what is admirable and you propel your course towards achieving it. Selectively choose your associations Certain associations, friendships and fraternal relationships lift you up and on the other hand other linkages sink you down low deep into the periphery. This is a matter of fact. Birds of a feather flock together. Mainstream people associate in their own quadrant. There are certain people who never see the good in any endeavour. There are people who just remind you why your dreams and

aspirations are seemingly unachievable. The danger in associating with little-minded people is that they will suck all the momentum out of you. Champions never get along with losers. Winners and losers have totally different life philosophies. It is literally impossible to think you can win when losers surround you. Failure is contagious. For you to keep your momentum, audit your entire associations and cast away all those friends that never build you or add value to you and the way you live your life. Celebrate every accomplishment It is good to build a culture of celebration. When success comes your way rejoice and be glad in it. This will naturally increase your desire for success that you become more willing to work for it. Success is so sweet that once you taste it you do not want to miss an opportunity to drink from its chalice. But when you celebrate remember to remain humble and keep your eye on the ball. Success is a journey and not a destination. It is foolish to empty your coffers over one accomplishment and in the process slaughtering the ox that trades the grain. By keeping your momentum, you remain on the right course towards the fulfilment of your aspirations. l Muyeche Chrispen is a new generation African entrepreneur in the field of human science.
