CHARMONY HISLOP ARTIST EXTRAORDINAIRE Let's Create TCI! Magazine was excited to chat with Charmony Hislop, a budding local artist whose passionate pursuit of the arts just keep on expanding! Take a read of Ms.Hislop's artistic journey; we hope you are truly inspired by her dedication and talent :) 1) Name: Charmony Hislop 2) Age: 22 3) Type of art you enjoy creating: There isn’t a particular type of art that I enjoy creating. I actually enjoy all forms of art. It’s the experience of being able to create something from various perspectives, and forms that brings out my passion for art. 4) Occupation: Currently I am a student. 5) What and who inspires your writing? : Inspiration comes in various forms for me. It can either be from a song I heard or a documentary I’ve seen; from there with the help from God I am able to produce inspirational pieces. What also inspires me are the experience of people around me and the things that they face on a daily basis. These things spark the idea to write something that will uplift and encourage people, to keep striving and start to seeing things that are right in front of them.
CHARMONY HISLOP ARTIST EXTRAORDINAIRE CONT'D 6) Who are your artistic idols? My artistic Idols, I had to have quite the think about this one. I would probably say Pastor Steven Furtick, actresses Taraji P. Henson and Gina Rodriguez and various singers like Jessie J, Jill Scott, Tessanne Chin, Chris Brown, the list goes on. 7) Best thing about writing: The best thing about writing is being able to lift people’s spirits through words. Words are powerful, and in a world with so many negative words being said reading, motivational pieces are an asset. Reading is not really seen as anything intriguing anymore, but I do hope that writing these books will continue to motivate and inspire more people to break out of negative vibes and strive for positive thoughs and ideas. 8) Most difficult thing about writing : The most difficult thing about writing is probably writer’s block, and wondering if people will actually gain anything from the pieces I create. I will admit trying to promote my books is a challenge, and gaining readers is the hardest part. However, I am constantly reminded that these words may not reach everyone, but if it only reaches one person I planted a seed. Once you plant a seed in good soil, a plant will surely grow.
CHARMONY HISLOP ARTIST EXTRAORDINAIRE CONT'D Tell readers more about your books and where they can find them: My first book that I started around September 2016 is called ‘For Every Woman’. Originally, I had the inspiration to motivate women, but did not know how to do so, but having a Wattpad account for so long, I decided to put it good use. This book is mainly targeted to women as a self-help guide, to inspire and motivate them in their everyday life. Each chapter targets a different topic, digging deep into the subject to motivate readers to press forward and face the problems, rather than just brushing it under the rug. Topics vary from Anxiety to Self-Worth. Men can read this book as well, there are some valuable points that can be useful for them. This book has recently been completed, and is still posted for everyone to read. I have recently started a new book called ‘It is Worth it’. This topic was inspired from feedback via social media because I wanted to appeal to a wider audience, not just women. ‘It is Worth’ is another self help guide on waiting on the right person with God’s guidance. Throughout the book, there will be step by step by tips on how to seek God not just for guidance in relationships, but also to start seeing yourself the way God sees you. From the beginning it will start with unlocking who you are first before seeking a spouse. So if you are tired of situationships and being friend zoned, or friend zoning people, this book is definitely for you. If you want access to these books, they can be found on www.wattpad.com. All you have to do is create an account and read this book and many other books for free. When you go the website, just type in the book titles or just look for my profile @Charmony to make it easier to find them.

CHARMONY HISLOP ARTIST EXTRAORDINAIRE Words of wisdom to young artists: Be inspired even if you feel that there is no inspiration around you. As millennials we tend to see a big picture and that is what makes us unique. We have major visions, not just for ourselves but for our country and the world at large. Inspiration may not come in the same form that it came in for someone else, and sometimes it may not come to us. Sometimes we must seek it. Seek and ye shall find, you don’t see something around you then push yourself beyond the borders and look at the bigger picture. Do not forget to be yourself and believe that you can. Your perspective and your creative thinking is very important and very useful. And lastly do not forget to dream, and when you dream activate it with your passion. I really do not care if it sounds crazy or weird to others, God surely does not think so, He placed that in you for a reason. Your dreams are not a coincidence or a mistake! While you are at it, do not forget your country, because the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Caribbean needs you.
COOL NEW STUFF From me to you by Daylan Williams “From Me to You” indicates what we ourselves receive in return for what we give; it’s our sowed seeds of negative and positive. We all want good to occur in our everyday life, but what is it we’re giving to those wanting the same? “From Me to You” includes real-life experiences and captivates those who can’t get enough poetry. SPEAK OUT! BULLYING WHAT IS BULLYING? Bullying is when someone tries to hurt others by making them feel uncomfortable or by physically hurting them. Can bullies be stopped? There are things you can do to stay safe from bullies: 1) Talk to an adult you trust. Don’t keep your feelings inside. Telling someone can help you feel less alone. They can help you make a plan to stop the bullying. 2) Stay near adults and other kids. Most bullying happens when adults aren’t around!

HEALTH TIPS Being healthy feels great! 1) Stay positive and have fun. A good mental attitude is important. Find an activity that you think is fun. You are more likely to keep with it if you choose something you like. A lot of people find it's more fun to exercise with someone else, so see if you can find a friend or family member to be active with you. 2) Take it one step at a time. Small changes can add up to better fitness. For example, walk or ride your bike to school or to a friend's house instead of getting a ride. Get on or off the bus several blocks away and walk the rest of the way. Use the stairs instead of taking the elevator or escalator.
3) Watch less TV or spend less time playing computer or video games. (Use this time to exercise instead!) Or exercise while watching TV (for example, sit on the floor and do sit-ups and stretches; use hand weights; or use a stationary bike, treadmill, or stair climber). 4) Eat 3 healthy meals a day, including at least 4 servings of fruits, 5 servings of vegetables, and 4 servings of dairy products.

AROUND THE WORLD SOMETHING A LITTLE FUNNY Thousands of Pikachus Take Over Japanese Streets (from DOGOnews) For the past four years, the Minato Mirai district of Yokohama, Japan has been bringing Pokémon’s most famous character to life with a Pikachu Outbreak Festival. The event, which features numerous fun activities, including colorful parades with thousands of people dressed in Pikachu costumes, began in 2014 to promote an upcoming Pokémon movie. It was such a success that its sponsors, the Pokémon Company, decided to make it an annual, week-long extravaganza. This year’s festival, held from August 9 to 15, had a Brazilian carnival theme and attracted almost two million fans. Entitled “Pikachu Dake Ja Nai Pikachu Tairyo Hasseichu” or “The Not Just Pikachu Pikachu Outbreak,” the event, co-sponsored by Niantic the developer and publisher of mobile game Pokémon Go, was the first of its kind to include other popular Pocket Monsters as well.
AROUND THE WORLD SOMETHING A LITTLE FUNNY (CONT'D) Thousands of Pikachus Take Over Japanese Streets (from DOGOnews) The week-long celebration of the electric rodents featured multiple free shows, including a “Pikachu stroll,” where 20 Pikachus departed Queen’s Square Yokohama, swaying side-to-side to a whistle. A welcome addition to this year’s festivities was the “Dripping Wet Splash Show,” which provided both audience and participants with some much-needed relief from the hot sun. 2017 also boasted the largest Pikachu Carnival Parade, where performers and more than 100 Pikachus danced to a Latin-inspired tune.
The highlight of the festival was the opportunity for Pokémon GO Trainers to traverse Yokohama and its beautiful parks and capture over 120 million Pokémon, including over 15 million Pikachus as well as other hard-to-find Pocket Monsters such as Chansey and Larvitar. For a thrilling finale, on August 14, some Pokémon masters teamed up with friends and other players to battle the game’s most valuable character, Mewtwo, at the specially created Pokémon GO park. The Yokohama Pokémon GO celebration, the largest real-world gaming event yet, was one of many organized by Niantic to celebrate the mobile game’s one-year anniversary. The company has also held successful Pokémon Go Fests in Illinois, Denmark, Prague, Sweden, and the Netherlands, and many more are scheduled in various other European countries before the end of the year.
AROUND THE WORLD SOMETHING SERIOUS MIT's Autonomous 3D Printing Platform Could Be Key For Building A Mars Colony (from DOGOnews) Housing ranks high among the numerous challenges that still need to be overcome before humans can colonize Mars. The brave pioneers that make the six-month voyage to the Red Planet will need a place to reside as soon as they land. While the optimal solution would be to have the structures ready before they get there, it has thus far been a challenge given that most automated construction robots have never made it out of the laboratory. Now, there may be a glimmer of hope thanks to Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) newly unveiled Digital Construction Platform (DCP). The rover-like DCP that was featured in the journal Science Robotics on April 26, 2017, comprises a dual arm system that is fitted on a tracked vehicle. As the larger arm moves, the smaller, precision motor robotic arm builds the structure by spewing out the necessary construction material, ranging from insulation foam to concrete, from its nozzle. The team of researchers led by recent Ph.D. graduate Steven Keating say that unlike other 3-D printers that are limited to building objects that fit within their overall enclosure, DCP’s free moving system can be used to construct structures of any size.
AROUND THE WORLD SOMETHING SERIOUS (Cont'd) MIT's Autonomous 3D Printing Platform Could Be Key For Building A Mars Colony (from DOGOnews) The team recently demonstrated the DCP’s building prowess on an empty field in Mountain View, CA. The robot began by creating a mold with expanding foam that hardens when dry. It then constructed the building, layer by layer, using sensors to raise itself higher as it progressed. The final product was a sturdy “home” that boasted 50-foot diameter walls and a 12-foot high dome with room for essentials like electricity wires and water pipes to be inserted inside. Even more impressive? It took a mere 14 hours to “print!” The researchers’ next plan is to make the DCP smart enough to analyze the environment where the structure is going to be built and determine the material densities best suited for the area. For example, unlike today’s uniform walls, future buildings would feature thicker walls on the side that gets impacted by the cold weather and thinner ones in areas that are shielded and do not require as much insulation. This would not only help create more energy-efficient and customized structures, but also significantly reduce the cost of materials . Neri Oxman, group director and an MIT associate professor of media arts and sciences, believes this [the DCP) will challenge ”traditional buildings typologies such as walls, floors, or windows.”
AROUND THE WORLD SOMETHING SERIOUS (Cont'd) MIT's Autonomous 3D Printing Platform Could Be Key For Building A Mars Colony (from DOGOnews) However, that’s not even the best part. Future DCP models are going to be solar powered, autonomous, and, most importantly, capable of sourcing construction components from its surroundings. This means the robot can be dispatched to remote, disaster-stricken areas, and perhaps even to Mars, to build shelters using whatever material is available. While that may sound like science fiction, Keating is confident the DCP will be ready for the real-world within five years. The scientist says, “You’ll start to see real structures made from these things. It’s going to be widespread, and [while] we won’t be able to make your house with this in the next five years, there will be structures being built.”
