AROUND THE WORLD Bones of Amelia Earhart Found March 14, 2018 Bones found on a remote island in the South Pacific almost certainly belong to lost aviation pioneer Ameila Earhart, an anthropologist has claimed. Ms Earhart disappeared in July 1937 whilst trying to become the first woman to fly around the globe. She and her navigator Fred Noonan were last seen when they left Papua New Guinea. The bones were found in 1940, but they were thought to belong to a man.. But now using modern techniques, it’s been determined they belonged to a woman. They’re also 100 times more likely to belong to Ms Earhart than any randomly selected other person. As well as the bones, the 1940 search party found a woman’s shoe, a navigational instrument called a sextant and a bottle of Benadictine, which Ms Earhart was known to carry.
AROUND THE WORLD Bones of Amelia Earhart Found Who was Amelia Earhart? Amelia Earhart was an American aviator (pilot) who set many flying records. She became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, and the first person ever to fly solo from Hawaii to the U.S. mainland. During a flight to circumnavigate the globe, Earhart disappeared somewhere over the Pacific in July 1937. Her plane wreckage was never found, and she was officially declared lost at sea. Her disappearance remains one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of the twentieth century.

TURKS & CAICOS ISLANDS FACTS Did you know that Blue Hills is the oldest settlement on Providenciales? At one time, the entire island carried the name. After the salt industry became established on Grand Turk and Salt Cay in the 1600s...small numbers of people settled in Providenciales. They started to make a living on subsistence farming, fishing, and eventually ship salvaging (wrecking). In the late 1700s, Cheshire Hall plantation was constructed. The settlements of Five Cays and The Bight gradually came into existence around this time. (Information courtesy of Tito Seymour/ Represent: Turks and Caicos Islands)
