1. Letter to the readers

“I became president of the United Way Brazil council in November 2014. I had got involved with activities related to volunteering and social investment during my career in O-I, since this is a strong value of our company. However, assume the leadership of the coalition has been a great learning experience. In recent years, the United Way Brazil has strengthened and grown, bringing quality education to thousands of children and youth. As chairman of the United Way Brazil and chairman of O-I in Brazil, I use my leadership to engage our collaborators in social transformation projects that we developed in partnership with the United Way Brazil. I believe that opening an opportunity for employees to volunteer in social transformation actions and to be co-investors of the project (because for each real donated by collaborators, O-I donates another real) are effective ways to exercise social responsibility of the company and show it to the collaborators a way to exercise their citizenship and social participation. Improve the communities where we live and work is a process which definitely also benefits the company. We are generating better opportunities for development for children and young people from poor neighborhoods of our country and with this we have the potential to generate a more competitive workforce and a stronger economy. As chairman of the board I also have the opportunity to spread the good work we have been doing so

4

that other companies might also join the United Way Brazil and so we can achieve our vision, building a fairer country where all individuals and families can reach their full potential. Our activity report describes major advances in 2014. I hope you enjoy and also become a social investor.

Rildo Lima Chairman of the Board of the United Way Brazil

Social investor Being Social Investor of United Way Brazil it’s more than been committed to a voluntary financial donation. It’s investing in programs and projects that directly impact the quality of education of children and youth in Brazil. The United Way Brazil believes in the union of efforts and performs with the company associated to the Campaign for Social Investor to present the programs and their results and engage people in our cause. For every R$1 donated by the collaborator, the company donates an additional R$ 1. The initiative enables the developer to become Social Investors with your company to transform the local community. For every real donated, R $ 0.85 are invested in community and the remainder is intended for costs administration of UWB. Every investment made by the collaborators is entirely directed to the communities. The amount destined to administrative costs come from the matching of the companies. According to the guidelines of our corporate governance, we are committed to improve more and more our efficiency and the goal is to limit administrative costs by up to 10%. In 2014, the UWB held Social Investor campaign in three associate partners: Owens Illinois, PG and PwC. The UWB was in each company for a week and had the opportunity to show the results of programmes and projects to collaborators and engage them in the social cause of the institution.

10

R$0,85 of each real donated is invested in the community.

Common Fund Children and youth programs of the United Way Brazil are funded by the Common Fund, formed by the resources of different companies and individuals that invest in UWB, and by grants from foundations and companies outside of Brazil. Grow Reading

A new partner added efforts with the United Way Brazil for the education of young children in 2014. The company Klabin, largest producer of paper for packaging of Brazil, through BNDES resources, supported the Grow Reading Project. The project was developed with the goal to strengthen the contact of children with the books and had impacted the reality of 1,680 children and 252 education professionals in nine cities of Brazil. The project has as partnership, the Department of Education of each municipality: Betim (MG), Guapimirim (RJ), Feira de Santana (BA), Otacílio Costa (SC), Correia Pinto (SC), Lages (SC), Jundiaí (SP), GOiana (PE) and São Leopoldo (RS). For UWB, the project has meant the opportunity to take our methodology to various locations in the country through distance education, which increased the number of children served. The Grow Reading contemplated with three approachs: the continuing education of professionals in early childhood education and technical staff of the secretariats about inserting the literature in the schools; voluntary performance of Klabin employees and parents of the children in the story-telling activity history and installation of Corners of reading and donation of a collection of quality (430 titles) in 10 infant schools to serve as a reference for schools in the municipalities. voluntary performance of Klabin employees and parents of the children in the activity storytelling and installation of Corners of reading and donation of a collection of quality (430 titles) in 10 infant schools to serve as a reference for schools in the municipalities. The project exceeded the estimated target audience reached. An initial estimate of 900 children, the project benefited 1,680 children in nine municipalities. In the schools, the books use to be stored, but now they are offered as part of the routine of children and books without quality are no longer available.

“The training showed a new way to practice reading in the classroom. The children’s literature gained a greater place in a kid’s life here at school. Telling stories is now a daily practice that is part of the educational process.” Sônia Maria Ferreira

Municipal Child Center in Betim, Minas Gerais.

18

Grow Reading launched an online platform that will empower the number of children that are been benefited. The United Way Brazil in partnership with the Institute Avisa Lá has developed a virtual platform (http: www.crescerlendo.org) for the training of educators of the public network of the Project Grow Reading. The online methodology will be replicated in other educational projects of UWB in 2015, which will increase the number of people trained and qualified in child education in the country.

“The distance method facilitated the interaction with participants from different States and enriched exchange of information, which contributed to my learning”

The training was divided into five modules. The first presented the platform participants. The second, “Read stories in child education”, treated the importance of this activity in early childhood and the ways to encourage it. In the third, “Organization of the environment for reading,” said the best ways to create attractive reading corners for children. Then came “Read and tell stories”, which featured tools to encourage the children have contact with literature. The course ended with the module “Look at the collection: selection criteria and proposals for circulation of books”. Each step included thematic discussions, so that the whole course lasted 24 weeks.

External evaluation confirms the importance of training for professional and academic life of the young To evaluate the impact of the training in academic and professional lives of young people, the United Way Brazil performed at the end of 2014 an external evaluation in partnership with the MOVE, advising on strategic evaluation in intelligent social investment. The study shows that the training stand as a lever for young people to have access to a professional expanded universe, favoring their interests by the studies and the world of work. Participated in this research 690 youth, 390 volunteers, 8 NGOs and 8 companies that were involved in the initiative in 2013. Employment, Education Directory and Future Perspective were the criteria chosen to evaluate the contributions of the training in the lives of young people one year after completing the project. With this approach, the research presented relevant data: 74.1% of respondents associated with the mentoring with learning how to grow professionally through study and career planning; 67% claims to have more concrete plans of how to continue the studies and 63% of young people believe that the training was crucial to improve the relationship with the academic life. The course content and contact with the volunteers, their life stories and experiences were also aspects most outstanding in the speech of young people. About the main gains in relation voluntary activity, as well as contact with young people, the most pointed item concerns the satisfaction of sharing knowledge, be useful, followed by important attributes as the educator role and networking, also promotes experience to teach and develop new skills. In this context, 85% of the volunteers would recommend this experiment for others.

22

The partner companies that developed the mentoring along with the UWB recognize that enhance of cooperate skills, put yourself in the other as well as a change in the conception of social responsibility. Another obvious positive factor was the business concern in relation to the training of young people after participation in the project. Some already begin the process of building a hiring policy for young people, especially as learners.

“Contact with the volunteers was extremely rich in knowledge, exchange of experiences and learning. Learn from people who exercise teaching is much more productive. Being inside a large company was inspiring and strengthened my desire to go in search of my professional goals. Today, I know where I want to be in a few years and it motivates me” Maria Eduarda

Participant of entrepreneurship mentoring in partnership with Votorantim
