DERBY SALE C O N S I S T E N T LY T H E B E S T

A triumph in the face of adversity When I became CEO of Tattersalls Ireland, at no stage did I ever imagine that I would have to stand in front of our UK purchasers, on the eve of the Derby Sale and tell them that they would not be able to come on site or attend the Sale. What happened over the course of the next two days at the Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale was nothing short of extraordinary. The Derby Sale went on to produce average and median prices second to none and to have witnessed such vibrant trade over the two days was truly magnificent. So despite the last minute COVID - enforced changes to the protocols which had been carefully formulated to allow the safe attendance of all UK based buyers, the Derby Sale performed to a level unequalled even in it’s own history, with a record average of €54,018, a record median of €48,000, a top lot of €280,000 and 119 lots selling for €50,000 or more. Once again, all the team at Tattersalls Ireland would like to take this opportunity to record our thanks and appreciation to all those who have contributed to the 2021 Derby Sale. In particular we must thank our loyal and understanding UK purchasers who bore the brunt of the last minute disruption, but who continued to use every possible option to participate successfully in the sale.

Similarly, the solidarity and support shown to us by our loyal vendors was heart-warming and we were especially pleased to see them duly rewarded in the Derby Sale sales ring. The highlight of the sale was selling the most expensive store horse sold in 2021 for €280,000. The Walk In The Park gelding headed a trade of true strength and depth, an illustration of the quality of the stock entrusted to us by so many leading vendors who continue to send their best store horses to the Derby Sale. While we were delighted that the 2021 Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale showed such vibrance, there can be no doubt that this would have been an even more successful renewal without the last minute disruption encountered by so many of our leading buyers. We now start the process of selecting the “Class of 2022”. We will watch previous Derby Sale graduates, as they forge their careers on the racetrack and fly the flag for a sale that represents the very finest of National Hunt breeding. Perhaps they will exceed the tally of FIVE 2021 Cheltenham Festival Grade 1 winners at last year’s Festival.

“I remember watching the Quevegas, the Annie Powers, the Apple’s Jades, the Benie Des Dieuxs and the Vroum Vroum Mags thinking ‘imagine if I could own one’ – now I can say I have one as good as them. I started buying mares really because of that race.” KENNY ALEXANDER OWNER BREEDER
