news Arecont Vision, the industry leader in IP-based megapixel camera technology, is creating a heightened industry focus on the company’s innovative MegaLab® system integration testing facilities in Los Angeles, CA. MegaLab allows system integrators to test various system configurations using industry leading network video recorder (NVR) and video management system (VMS) solutions employing Arecont Vision’s comprehensive line of megapixel cameras to ensure that optimal system bandwidth load capacities and desired functionality are achieved. To provide easy access to MegaLab’s extensive resources, technology partners can perform tests on-site at the facilities or remotely via the Internet. “MegaLab provides our technology partners with exclusive access to the most advanced megapixel imaging, video management and recording technologies available to test their system designs in a highly controlled environment,” said Diego Simkin, Technology Partner Manager, Arecont Vision. “The results of these tests can have a dramatic effect on how effectively and efficiently our partners market, sell and install megapixel camera systems.” Three certification tests are offered through MegaLab including camera integration, feature integration and load testing. Product testing is by appointment and generally takes one day either on-site or via remote connection to the MegaLab. Tests are run with the assistance of Mr. Simkin to ensure operational efficiency and validity. Compatibility results are posted to the Arecont Vision website, making it easier and more convenient for end users, system integrators and architects and engineers to review and select system components for projects. MegaLab is equipped with multi-core Xeon servers that offer both virtualized and physical environments that are connected to more than 100 Arecont Vision megapixel cameras. Brivo OnAir is integrated with the company’s duress system, so that when an employee triggers one of the panic buttons, their location is pinpointed and a record is maintained of such incidents. According to Biggs, “We’re able to react before we’ve even received a phone call. We’ve got a panic button in the Wellness Center, which is open 24/7. Security staff can’t be in the gym all day, so the button gives us an extra measure of security.” Eventually, Biggs plans to expand the duress stations to machining and other work areas. With Brivo, Kimray manages approximately 941 users including employees, spouses and vendors. These users are divided into an impressive 108 groups, all with specific day, time, and location access privileges. Key cards are used for access, but they also contain a bar code that is used for time and attendance recording. Most groups are organized by work schedule and location, other groups are granted 24/7 access.

Kimray Rolls Out Brivo OnAir Cloud-based Access Management Across Company By Bruce Doneff Brivo enables loss prevention team to better manage all facilities and stay proactive Brivo Systems LLC, leader in cloud applications for security management, today announced that Kimray, Inc., a leading provider of petroleum industry control equipment located in Oklahoma City, OK, has standardized on the Brivo OnAir cloud-based access control solution for two of their current facilities, with plans to expand to a wide range of facilities and locations. Dowley Security Systems is the Brivo dealer and integrator for this ongoing project. Like many enterprises, prior to upgrading to Brivo, Kimray relied on lock and key for their security. “A few years ago, our Facilities Director started looking into other options,” recalled Jeremy Biggs, Kimray’s Loss Prevention Manager. “We wanted more control over our facilities.” Kimray selected Brivo OnAir and it has been rolling out expanded access management control over the last year and a half. Thus far, Brivo manages eight exterior and 16 interior

Kimray uses Brivo’s highly versatile alert feature. Alerts to the security staff include those signaling open doors and temperature sensors monitoring certain rooms. The electrician has his own set of alerts to monitor for specific events. “We monitor the system’s activity log constantly,” explained Biggs. “We run a monthly report on attendance at the Wellness Center to measure usage. Anytime we have a problem or incident, we can run a report for the time period needed.” The Brivo system is also integrated with Kimray’s alarm system. Biggs says the Brivo system has been very useful in monitoring and containing certain incidents, too. “In instances where we need to investigate, Brivo helps me track down where users were, which reduces my investigation time immensely.” As the Brivo system is rolled out, Biggs and his team have identified multiple sites for potential, future expansion. These facilities include buildings in different cities, which are distributors carrying Kimray products. It is Biggs’ intent to manage all sites centrally from the Loss Prevention Office. Kimray’s Security Department has six full-time officers, with someone onsite around the clock. “Overall, our user experience with Brivo has been good,” Biggs reported. “We’ve got security officers ranging from college students to retirees, with all levels of computer skills, and we’ve had no problems at all.” Founded by Garman O. Kimmell in 1948, Kimray, Inc., a privately-owned family company, has a rich history of service to the petroleum industry, beginning with the introduction of the 3" SGT-BP, a pilot operated gas backpressure regulator. Digital Barriers to showcase SafeZone-edge embedded video analytics at IFSEC International 2014 Edge-embedded intrusion detection application that combines exceptional reliability with a uniquely simple automated setup approach and affordability Digital Barriers will showcase SafeZone-edge, its world-leading edge-embedded intrusion detection application at IFSEC International 2014. By combining outstanding detection reliability with affordability and simplicity, SafeZone-edge offers a genuine alternative to costly and complex server-based intelligent video analysis (IVA) as well as lower cost but unreliable video motion detection (VMD). With organisations typically facing an underwhelming choice when selecting between video-based intrusion detection systems, SafeZone-edge was designed to specifically address the limitations and compromises of conventional solutions. This started with streamlining the efforts of the installer and operator, by replacing the complex and time-consuming manual calibration of cameras with a fully automated setup procedure. This even includes a unique function that allows multiple cameras to be calibrated in a single step, saving time and offering greater flexibility to installers in their deployments of cameras and analytics at site. Dave Oliver, Director UK Enterprise Account Sales at Digital Barriers, said: “SafeZone-edge was designed with a ruthless focus on simplicity, refining the product to concentrate on the key features and outcomes that are valued most; practical configuration of the system and reliable detection of intruders. “A default intrusion detection zone and user-defined scenarios cover typical perimeter security and sterile zone monitoring operations, while setup is streamlined by using a simple scene walkthrough to provide the reference data for automatic calibration of each camera. An advanced analytical engine with automated scene learning enables SafeZone-edge to detect reliably in even the most difficult environments, including adverse weather and variable illumination, as well as adapt to seasonal changes and day/ night operation.” Despite this focus on simplicity and ultra-efficient edgebased processing, detection performance remains uncompromising. SafeZone-edge is one of the very few truly continued on page 18 July/August 2014 | 9

outdoor surveillance applications. This camera is an ideal surveillance solution for tough environments where standard security cameras are not suited to survive. All OE-C7163 models are equipped with a heater allowing operation in temperatures as low as -31°F (-35°C). The new DINION IP 4000 and 5000 cameras from Bosch Security Systems, Inc. Video surveillance as a security measure often requires balancing optimum performance with aesthetics. In offices, hospitality applications or retail stores, design and appearance can be just as important as technical performance. The new DINION IP 4000 and 5000 cameras from Bosch Security Systems, Inc. meet these multiple and demanding requirements by combining the latest technology with outstanding aesthetic design. Both cameras offer an attractive range of features with regard to the highest image quality, management of bit rates, and lowest storage requirements, as well as important audio capabilities, cloud-based services, and easy and cost-effective installation. The cameras are available in two versions: the DINION IP 4000 HD with 720p resolution and the DINION IP 5000 HD with 1080p resolution. The desired amount of detail can be selected according to the intended application. Both models feature intelligent Dynamic Noise Reduction (iDNR) to automatically adjust the level of noise reduction based on movement in the scene. This ensures crisp images and saves up to 50 percent on bit rates and thus memory requirements, considerably lowering storage and overall system costs. Built-in microphone and two-way audio functionality turn these DINION IP cameras into even more effective security tools, as the operator or security guard can not only listen to but also question intruders or communicate with visitors who appear to be in need of assistance. Easy installation and configuration are guaranteed by the cameras’ Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) functionality and preconfigured user modes. For retail applications in particular, the cameras come with a direct monitor output, enabling a viewing monitor to be connected to the camera. This makes it ideal for entrances and other situations where people need to be made aware of the presence of video surveillance.

continued from page 9 edge-based applications to achieve the highest possible accreditation under the internationally recognised UK Home Office i-LIDS® evaluation scheme. SafeZone-edge is certified as an i-LIDS® approved primary detection system for operational alert use in sterile zone monitoring applications - as well as being an i-LIDS® approved event based recording system for sterile zone monitoring applications. Dave Oliver added: “SafeZone-edge uses an analytical engine that actually derives from a sophisticated server-based solution, with extensive re-engineering and code optimisation to create an edge-embedded application that runs directly on cameras and encoders. This effort was aided by the decision to develop the initial SafeZone-edge product on the world-leading ACAP open camera application platform from Axis.” IFSEC International 2014 will feature the latest release of SafeZone-edge, with the innovative multi-camera automated setup feature, enhanced object tracking, expanded thermal camera compatibility, and the option to define multiple scenarios and alarm events on each camera. SafeZone-edge is available through leading value added resellers and distributors, with an affordable and simple pricing approach. It is already presenting system integrators, installers and consultants with a compelling case to re-evaluate their use of IVA and VMD for major projects as well as smaller site installations. In one of the earliest trials, SafeZone-edge reduced the false alarm count at one site from an operationally unviable 10,000+ per week to just one, without loss of detection sensitivity. SafeZone-edge has launched on ACAP from Axis, the world’s leading network camera manufacturer. Daren Lang, Manager - Business Development, Northern Europe from Axis said: “SafeZone-edge is a very exciting solution and a class-leading intrusion detection package that provides Axis camera users with a compelling argument for embedding video analytics at the edge of the network. This is a great working example of how the Axis Camera Application Platform is evolving. In this case Digital Barriers are using Axis cameras as the platform to deliver a solution that is not only very cost effective but also provides levels of accuracy and robustness that are usually only associated with server-based applications.” At IFSEC International 2014, Digital Barriers will be exhibiting with Axis Communications on stand E1000. Digital Barriers will also be featuring their RDC intelligent ground sensors and TVI wireless video and alarm distribution platform. These innovative capabilities provide organisations, particularly those in the critical national infrastructure (CNI) domain, with greater flexibility in their security and surveillance operations.

Smartphone Access Control for Schools Despite limited budgets, most school and university security professionals are being tasked with enhancing access control of employees, students and visitors. Cost obviously plays a significant role in the decision process but your final decision should not be limited solely to cost. You also need to consider the appropriate level of security and convenience for your users and security and convenience are often opposing forces. Too much security can inconvenience everyone and they find ways around it, too little security and you aren’t doing your job. Striking the right balance will ensure your employees, students and visitors can do what they need, to do their jobs and comply with security policies. Up until a few years ago your access control options were limited. You either had mechanical keys, keypads or electronic access cards. Recently two technologies have come to the forefront, biometric and phone based access control systems. These two technologies emerged because of challenges presented by their predecessors. The oldest technology is the mechanical key. Keys have been around for thousands of years and can be effective if only one trustworthy person has a key but that is rarely the case. Since keys are easily lost or copied, maintaining acceptable security with a key system is very expensive because each time a key is lost or someone leaves with one, you had to get a locksmith in to rekey the locks. The challenges with keys lead to the development of keypads. Keypads became popular because they allowed you to change codes without rekeying the entire facility but keypads had two weaknesses; PIN numbers are easily shared and keypads provide no audit trails. Enter electronic card-keys. These became popular because they could be issued, electronically revoked, and there was an audit trail. The major drawbacks of card based systems were that, like keypads and keys in that they were easily shared and easily duplicated but card based systems also require a management of the cards and fobs and the cards can be expensive, in many cases more than $5 each. Biometric technologies effectively solved the problem of sharing and duplication as it is essentially impossible to do. Finger print recognition, iris scan and face 20 | Campus Security News

recognition are the leading technologies and they are starting to get traction but their success will continue to be limited until they overcome a few big hurdles. The first is cost, these systems can sometimes cost as much as $5,000/door to install and the enrollment process can be administratively burdensome. The second hurdle is convenience; these systems typically require presenting your biometric for several seconds to get acceptable performance. This long wait can be disruptive in high volume applications. The other hurdle is invasiveness, many people are uncomfortable putting their hands on a device during cold-andflu season or letting a laser scan your eye even though it is safe. In 2007, Smartphone Access Systems were introduced primarily to increase convenience by using a credential everyone is already carrying, their phone. They offer significantly higher security than key, card and keypad systems because people take responsibility for their phone, are unlikely to share it and know immediately when it is missing. In fact one might argue that for anyone under 30, the phone is a biometric because it is part of their body. Phones also all have a unique ID which, unlike cards and fobs, does not get duplicated by the manufacturers. There are three choices for phone based access control systems Bluetooth Classic, Bluetooth Smart or LE (Low Energy) and NFC (Near Field Communication). Bluetooth offers the advantage of long range which allows you mount readers on the secure side of the door. This helps prevent vandalism and weather damage and can significantly reduce installation costs, in most cases you can get the system installed for about $1,000/ door. Bluetooth Smart is the most exciting technology and offers many benefits, however Bluetooth Smart phones are in their infancy and represent a very small percentage of the installed base of phones. NFC does not work with iPhones or feature phones so if you go with either of those, you may be forced to purchase additional hardware for those who don’t have the latest, greatest phones. Bluetooth Classic is available on every phone include iPhones, Androids, Blackberrys, Windows phones and even “feature” or “dumb” phones so for the next few years, this will be your safest option.
