As I reflect back on my publishing career and the magazines that we have done I can’t think of a more well-received magazine than this one carving out our specific niche. As of last month we are now the ONLY FREE global tattoo shop and end reader publication!! ...in the WORLD!! In the next few months, we will be increasing our circulation and page count steadily. If you don’t already receive a complimentary copy of the magazine in your email, please go and subscribe. It costs you nothing and takes only minutes to complete. Many of you will be also receiving this copy for the first time -- I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoy putting it together. In this issue, you’ll also find supplier spotlights — this will be a new addition for all of you tattoo shop owners, and artists looking for more product knowledge. If there is a product that you would like to see featured or reviewed please reach out to us and let us know. In every issue now you will see the top suppliers and vendors for the tattoo industry. Next year this will become an annual issue, and should become a useful and informational tool for readers. If you want to be included in next year’s guide, please contact us. We will be adding more columns and articles in the future. As always, we encourage contributions on editorial from readers and vendors alike. Borough Furnace Skillets

Gear & Stuff

It’s tough to beat a cast iron skillet in terms of culinary versatility — you can use the same piece of cookware for anything from searing a steak to frying potatoes, and just about anything in between — and they’re guaranteed to last for generations to come, while getting better with each use. Borough Furnace Skillets are each individually cast from nothing but recycled iron (they take as much as eight weeks to deliver one lovingly-crafted skillet), so you don’t have to worry about their quality. Each one comes pre-seasoned, and sports a long handle that stays cool to the touch, so all you have to think about is the next meal you’re going to cook.

SOLUTION

Used the world over, our best selling machine is the Solution. This shader is created from a block of C10-18 cold rolled steel. The geometry of the Solution is super versatile, and can be set up to hit more solid when using for solid color fields or eased up for a smoother softer black and grey or airbrush style. Designed as an all purpose machine, it’s flexibility offers a wide range of setups, and is well balanced in the hand. The secret to its wide range, is how consistently is runs, day in and day out. It features all of our high quality precision fit components as well as a black oxide finish. Driven by a hand wound set of 10 wrap 5/16” coils the Solution weighs 8.4 oz. Coils available in your choice of a black or battery finish.

Gtar

Learning to play a musical instrument can be a real pain — especially if you haven’t already spent most of your life practicing — but with Gtar, you can make learning to play the guitar just a little bit easier. Made to work with your iPhone, this guitar features a multi-touch LED fretboard that lights up, showing you exactly what to play. Best yet, it’s built exactly like a guitar, with genuine strings and working frets, so anything you learn translates directly to the real thing. And with multiple purpose-built apps, you can learn more, create music, and play existing songs, learning to play a guitar has never been so easy.

WATSON

The new handmade Watson from superior is by far their best outing as a machine builder. It’s well balanced and well made. The personal touches from the cigar wrapper coils to the hand etching make each one unique. As a shader (how the machine comes set up) the Watson performs smoothly from 5.5 volts on up. Pushing color running around 6.5 to 8 volts. I had very little skin trauma in all three test tattoos. As a liner this machine is an everyday slinger...it hits very nicely at 8.5 volts and runs a traditional 9 line with a single pass. It it’s my preferred seeing for this machine as it comes with both armature bars for easy switching if needed...all in all it’s a great showing from the kids at Superior...

Google Glass Titanium Eyewear

One of the biggest strikes against Google Glass — if not the biggest, really — is the extremely odd looking hardware. While it still features the rather huge box, camera, and floating screen, Google Glass Titanium Eyewear does look quite a bit more normal than its predecessor. This new collection includes three different frames — Bold, Thin, and Split — that arrive with Glass and a UV lens clip, and can even be outfitted with prescription lenses to give you the best excuse we’ve yet heard for not taking them off.

DV8 Golf Clubs

Anyone who’s ever tried traveling with their golf clubs knows the pain that is trying to drag around a heavy bag full of rattling metal sticks — and that’s not even mentioning the troubles of transporting them on a motorcycle or bike. DV8 Golf Clubs aim to get rid of all these problems by putting a full set of clubs in a lightweight backpack. Thanks to a patented quick-change coupler, you can switch from a graphite to a steel shaft or from a 5-iron to a putter in under 3 seconds, all without giving up the performance you’d expect from a full-size set — or dealing with the hassle of hauling them around.

Earin Wireless Earbuds

Bluetooth is great for cutting the cables between your phone and your ears — but up ‘til now, basically all BT earbuds have still had a cable running around the back of your head connecting the two tiny speakers. Earin Wireless Earbuds promise to do away with all of that. Billed as the world’s smallest wireless earbuds, they’re actually two tiny in-ear drivers that work together as a single headphone, delivering great sound thanks to balanced armature speakers, and coming complete with a sleek storage capsule that doubles as a charger.

FASHION

Special Sunglasses Edition Super Andy Warhol Sunglasses

Andy Warhol was a notorious sunglasses-wearer (among other things). Now you can honor his legacy with a pair of Super Andy Warhol Sunglasses. Handmade in Italy, these luxurious shades come in one of four styles, each featuring a different interior lining of a Warhol self-portrait, as well as an embossed Warhol signature, and dark Zeiss lenses. Just be careful if you’re ordering from the States — the website warns that you may have to do some talking with Customs, lest your shades get sent back on your dime.

Warby Parker x Uncrate Model X1 Sunglasses

Just over a year ago, we set out to find a pair of driving sunglasses that were both timeless and functional. When that search came up empty, we called on our friends at Warby Parker to lend us a hand. Designed from the ground up for driving, and looking good while doing it, the limited edition Warby Parker x Uncrate Model X1 Sunglasses succeed on both fronts, if we do say so ourselves. Sporting a matte black acetate frame, with a look inspired by equal parts McQueen and the curves of vintage sports cars, the X1’s feature a lightweight nylon lens topped off with Zeiss Ri-Pel, a hydrophobic coating that repels water, sand, and other elements that might hit you in the face while you’re flying around in your roadster. After months of testing and perfecting, only 500 pairs have been produced. And as usual with Warby Parker eyewear, for every pair of Uncrate edition frames purchased, a pair of glasses will be given to someone in need.

Ray-Ban Outdoorsman Craft Sunglasses

Some guys just can’t be kept indoors, they need to get out appreciating everything that life has to offer — and it’s just that sort of guy who inspired the Ray-Ban Outdoorsman Craft Sunglasses. Based off the classic aviator style, these sunglasses are finished with hand-stitched deer leather on the brow bar and ear pieces, giving them a distinct, masculine look. They also feature gold-colored metal frames, polar10 | Tattooed Art & Culture

ized, mirrored crystal lenses, and a lightweight construction that lets you comfortably wear them all day. So give your eyes a break the next time you step outside, and do it in style.

Shwood Fifty/Fifty Titanium Sunglasses

Shwood’s original Fifty/Fifty glasses offered a great mix of acetate and wood, so it only makes sense that these Shwood Fifty/Fifty Titanium Sunglasses mix premium hardwoods with vacuum-plated titanium. While the hardwoods form the end of the stems, the titanium at the front is cut from a single sheet of titanium for maximum flexibility and weight reduction. Of course, sunglasses are only worthwhile if they allow you to see, which is why each pair sports Optics by Carl Zeiss Vision lenses.

Ray-Ban Wayfarer Flat Metal Sunglasses

As summer approaches, you know how crucial it is to be prepared to spend a lot of time out in the sun — and to look good doing it. With Ray-Ban Wayfarer Flat Metal Sunglasses your eyes get plenty of protection, with all the style you come to expect from a pair of Ray-Bans. Made from laser-cut stainless steel, they’re finished in a range of matte colorways including white, red, blue, gunmetal, and black. Cut in a modern take on the classic wayfarer style, these frames are lightweight and comfortable enough to wear all day long.

Randolph Aviator Sunglasses

Sure, Ray-Ban’s version might be better known, but they sure as hell aren’t as tough. Randolph Aviator Sunglasses ($99) were designed for the U.S. Military, and feature unique bayonet temples made to fit underneath headgear, lifetime-warranted solder joints, a variety of available non-polarized and polarized glass or polycarbonate lens options, including prescriptions, five different frame colors, and an included hard case and maintenance kit. If they’re good enough for NASA, they’re good enough for us.

TAC: What’s your favorite style of tattoo?

TAC: Tell us something that no one knows about you?

Moss: Most of my work is black and grey and realism. I just love how soft everything looks and I was drawn to it immediately. However, after being so submerged in the industry I am truly impressed by all styles and I come across new ones all the time.

Moss: I am an open book, I live a very healthy public life. Most people don’t know that I am a 14 year competitive gymnast which took up most of my life until a knee injury that put me out of the sport my sophomore year of high school.

TAC: How many piercings do you have? Moss: 19!!! I have 10 dermals going up my rib cage, 4 dermals in my left arm, 2 dermals on my face, navel and I had my ears cut to a 00 TAC: If you could be anywhere in the world right now where would you be? Moss: I absolutely have a secret love affair with Italy. I have friends in Milan and I just absolutely love it there. If I could spend the summers over there I would do it in a heartbeat. TAC: Most memorable moment? Moss: There are so many! I have a very eventful time in life, love and business. I think if you are not making memories everyday then you are simply not living to the fullest. It is so hard to nail down just one memorable moment. TAC: If you could meet anyone dead or alive who would that person be? Moss: I think that there are many memorable and inspiring people both dead and alive. However, I lost my grandmother last year June 2013 and if I could have one meeting with anyone alive or dead I would use it to have lunch with her just one more time. I miss her so much and she was so wise, inspiring and always loved to hear my stories and live vicariously through me. We had gossip, we had tears and we had life lessons. She was taken from me before I was ready to let her go.

TAC: If you could be a super hero or comic character which one would you choose? Moss: Wonder Woman!!!!!! I do it all. I am a wife, a mom, a shop owner, a model, I manufacture and distribute my own merchandise and I travel the world. Every aspect of my life gets its set time of attention but my kiddos get most of it. My life is planned around their schedules and their lives. TAC: Most valued possession? Moss: My kids of course..... That’s a possession right?!?!? Something money can buy would have to be my iPhone unfortunately, I have to be connected. TAC: If there was anywhere in the world you could travel where would you go? Moss: I have my heart set on Bora Bora I have heard such amazing things about that place and I have the seen the pictures. Bobby and I still haven’t had a honeymoon because we travel too much as it is so maybe for our 5 year wedding anniversary coming up. TAC: If you could change anything about yourself what would that be? Moss: I would like to have more patience.... I am a no BS kind of person and I figure things out very quickly which I feel is a good and bad thing. Its good because I don’t waste as much time any more but it is bad because I wish sometimes I would slow down and see things differently. TAC: Goals for 2014?

TAC: How many tattoos do you personally have?

Moss: It is top secret....... You have to follow me if you can keep up ;)

Moss: I lost count.... I have one artist. My husband, Bobby Moss is the only artist that has ever tattooed me so it has all blended in together. I am pushing about 120 hours of chair time and I still have lots to finish.

kayla koeune Corner bars, tattoo parlors, motorcycle exhaust, and the greased up bolt of her M4 provide the elements that tend to drive the passionate work behind Kayla Koeune’s artistic creations. Koeune grew up in small-town Wisconsin where she found a love for art at a very young age. …and like most of Wisconsin youth, she spent much of hers in taverns; only she was busy drawing the bar flies from a fort she’d construct out of stools. Her passion to create never ceasing, Koeune decided to expand her knowledge and attended the Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts where she earned her BA in Fine Arts with a minor in Art History. She gravitated toward the challenge of the nude human form and capturing the raw emotion of everyday life. Following college, she did what a lot of kids with degrees in Art did…joined the Wisconsin Army National Guard. Almost immediately after training, she deployed to Baghdad, Iraq, where she developed new connections and friendships that soon would alter her path completely. She was introduced to the loud, dirty and entertaining world of motorcycles and their riders. Proud of being a part of history, of defending her flag, and of her military career, SSG Koeune found solace as well as therapy after her return home behind the handlebars of her motorbike. Her artwork grew, defined itself, became more individualized and then, more motorcycle driven, weaving together her own grittiness, brotherhood and pride. “Ill chase this dream down whatever road is put before me and ride it to the insanity of every lived breath.” Koeune founded Inferno Art Studio L.L.C. in 2012 where she works predominantly as a commission artist to exemplify her use of diverse subject matters and mediums. From oil and watercolors, to graphic art and design, textiles, enamels and mural work. Her artwork has made a footprint into the motorcycle industry, with engagements all over the United States; showing work as well as performing live paintings at different motorcycle events. But, with the ever changing life of a vagabond like Koeune, suddenly finding herself in possession of the keys to a 16-foot-long short bus opens up an entirely new venue of life and adventure. Can we say mobile art studio? Itching at the spokes to repurpose her bus into a complete mobile studio, she also has hopes of taking on a tattoo ap14 | Tattooed Art & Culture

prenticeship within the next year. Because really, what’s one more medium? Kayla is not one to be limited by a strict definition of canvas, and she finds an addictive passion in exploring new elements and discovering new attitudes in her own work. Defend, Ride and Paint. Koeune’s art speaks for itself.

Stiletto Heels!

What do Stiletto Heels and Tattoo Shop Insurance have in common? The first stiletto heels claim we had was in a popular beach area in Southern California. The shop had purple and white checked tiled floors. Those floors made a woman in stiletto heels “dizzy” and thus she tripped and fell and damaged her back. It just happened that she didn’t have health insurance, so no surprise, the shop got sued. Our insurance company argued that she took her own risk by wearing the stiletto heels and ultimately this view prevailed - the woman did not receive any payment from the insurance company. However the legal fees ended up costing over $49,000. If the shop did not have insurance, the owner would have had to pay this out of his own pocket. What can be learned from this story? Should the shop have posted a sign stating their policy was “No stiletto heels?” Did the checked tiles make a person dizzy? Not likely. The lessons to be learned from this claim are a.) there are crazy people everywhere and b.) the only real way to properly protect yourself is to carry insurance. If not, plan to have a minimum of $50,000 in the bank at all times and keep your fingers crossed. The second stiletto heel claim was again in a tattoo shop. The woman tripped and fell outside the front door and blamed it on the shop. Could anyone have predicted this

would have happened? The sidewalk outside the shop was in safe condition so no one, except the stiletto heel wearer, could accuse the shop owner of negligence. In fact it was probably the responsibility of the landlord, but the landlord argued that she was not responsible for who came into the shop, a valid argument. All of these reasonable arguments did not stop the shop from getting a lawsuit. The insurance company ended up paying the woman about $2000 for her medical injuries, after paying $13,500 in investigation and defense costs. Bad luck happens – it has nothing to do with how good of a tattooer you are or how good the artists or piercers in the shop are. For 21 years, Professional Program Insurance Brokerage has been offering the following insurance coverages for the Body Art Professional: Tattoo/Body Piercing shops - including all Artists, Tattoo Artist or Body Piercer - as Independent Contractors, Professional Liability & General Liability for Tattoo/Body Piercing Shops, Minor Tattooing & Piercing, Guest Artists, Communicable Disease, Sexual Abuse, Apprenticeship Programs, MCA/Needling, Landlords, Conventions, Mobile Units, Property coverage for Fire, Theft, and coverage for Signs, Glass, Flash, & Loss of Business Income. Auto Review Not Your Father’s Diesel

2014 Volkswagen Touareg TDI Lux was a pleasant surprise, shedding all doubts about driving a diesel-powered SUV By Charles Hudson

When I was first handed the keys to the 2014 Volkswagen Touareg TDI LUX, I was a bit skeptical. This was a diesel vehicle ... and my senses were prepared for smoky exhaust and obnoxious engine noise. But this wasn’t the case. The Touareg is refined and luxurious, and after a few spins around the block, I was thoroughly impressed with VW’s luxury diesel SUV. The Touareg is in its second generation, but received minor updates for 2014. From my perspective, the Touareg hits all the marks: clean lines, a quiet and powerful diesel engine, an abundance of standard features, a comfortable and roomy interior, and excellent ride quality. At $55,885, though, the Touareg is probably out of most people’s budget. Under the hood: The V6 TD diesel engine, paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission, provides excellent acceleration and power on command. It’s rated at 20 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, with a combined score of 23, which are decent numbers considering the Touareg is a sizable four-wheel drive SUV. You’ll pay more at the pump for diesel fuel, however, which offsets the Touareg’s modest fuel economy. All-wheel drive is standard, and it provides excellent control in wet, snowy and muddy conditions, making it an excellent vehicle for those who live in areas with foul weather and difficult road conditions. Yet it still handles well during dry conditions. On the inside: The Touareg TDI is a five-seater loaded with luxury amenities. A touch-screen navigation and infotainment system is intuitive and smart. A panoramic sunroof brightens front and back seats with sunlight. Plenty of controls are strategically placed on leather steering wheel, including Bluetooth wireless connectivity, cruise control, audio system and controls for the Touareg’s on-board computer, which diagnoses problems like low tire pressure, and gives a readout of the vehicle’s current fuel efficiency. The back seats are richly appointed with comfortable leather, A/C vents and a 12V plug to recharge gadgets. For versatility, the back seats fold down flat and split into a 4020-40 configuration, providing ample room to haul both people and things.

And speaking of cargo, the rear tailgate opens with a simple pass of your foot underneath the vehicle’s rear bumper, so there’s no more fidgeting for key fobs while your arms are double-loaded with grocery bags and toddlers. Vital Stats MSRP: $55,885 (as tested) Engine: 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 TDI Clean Diesel Output: 240 hp and 406 lb-ft. of torque MPG: 20 city/29 hwy
