TATTOO ARTIS Corey Miller

Corey Miller was born in March 1967. With 15 years, Corey Miller was a punk rockband drums. At that same age, he wanted to be a tattoo itself took place in a veryrudimentary way. He was his own tattoo machine and used some strings of guitar as aneedle. In 1983, he moved to Hollywood and met the first study of tattoos, SpotlightTattoo, led by the great Bob Roberts. To Corey called him much attention brutaldesigns and skulls that were performed in the Studio of the rockers and metal heads that I admired. 3

The big jump gave it only a year later, Corey was the study of tattoos Franco, inCalifornia. There he learned the trade, starting by collecting garbage and performcleaning tasks as outlined their designs. It didn’t take long for the tattoo Studio toclose and, before doing so, the veteran Franco gave him a tattoo machine.

In 1987 thin gstook a turnaround for the tattooist. Marcos Mahoney met tattoo artistat a party. Starting from there, Corey began to visit the Studio of the artist tattoos andadmired the high level to which worked.

There he got the opportunity to starttattogoing and the possibility of being part of the team of tattooists from a new study that Mahoney would open

In 1987, another tattoo artist, Dick Warsocki, came into the store where Coreyconducted more than 10 tattoos a day. This great tattoo artist was known for hisnative American tattoo designs. It astonished to see the tattoo which had just carried out Corey with a head of an American Indian. So much so that he invited him to gowith him to a tattoo Convention in New Orleans. Corey did not lose the opportunityand went with it, something that changed his life. He met tattoo artists who admireddeeply. Advanced without limits in his profession and his career expanded throughoutthe United States, Canada, France, Amsterdam andJapan. Corey became one of themost requested by the good tattooists do its work.

His first tattoo Studio opened it, along with two partners, in California. The businesslasted 2 years and also was the scene of a firefight a few meters from the local. Members marched and Corey stayed single. After taking a vacation, he returned towork and travel. He rode another study in your own home, another in the back roomof a barbershop and thus until finally he opened his own Tattoo Studio with a teamled by him, in 1997.

Corey confesses to being lucky for having lived through the bestand worst of the tattoo business. All those things made him learn and improve. He has tattooed big stars of music as to James Hetfield of Metallica. Own biker JesseJames asked him to tattoo a ticket of $100 in back.

Henry Powell

Henry Powell has been tattooing since 1989 and has made almost everything that you can imagine. That includes original parts, classics, religious works, portraits, cover-ups, and original characters. The love for tattoos began when he was only 15 when he was going to lie down and saw a friend do tattoos in your garage with a h o m e m a d e m a ch i n e. Henry was immediately hooked and couldn’t wait to get his first tattoo. This was when Henry, first met Corey Miller and Fat George then only 16 years old.

Corey without knowing tattoo, tattooeda minor, so began a new life style for Henry. After this tattoo, Henry spent countlesshours turning the world of tattoo, Corey moved there, so he could study the artists who worked there. Once Henry knew that this was the lifestyle that wanted, decided to try things for yourself.

It all began in a small room of your House with a rotary machine made hand. Innocent by standers offered his skin in Exchange for works of art. After a bit more experienceand much better team, Henry ventured into Hollywood and began working in afamous shop in the street. This was when Henry grew little by little in his own stylewhich I specialize in bright colors, black and grey. After a while, Henry wanted tofurther expand his career and almost at the same time he was offered the opportunity to work with his

friend and mentor Corey Miller in optical Overdrive. Corey took himunder his wing and showed him the dark side.

This is the moment in his career whichhe collected all his knowhow, once elbow was working with Corey.

After closing the doors there after an unspeakable accident, Henry had the opportunity to move to Hollywood. ETO happened at the same time that Corey was building Six Feet Under. While in Hollywood, he worked for Gil Montie in TattooMania.

Henry had the opportunity to work alongside some of the best artists that included Marcos Mahoney and Gil Montie. Henry has really grown as an artist because of these diverse experiences with such talented artists.

ALEJANDRO LEGAZA

A very methodical tattooist “I came to his Studio to conduct the interview. It is tattooing since for it work and customers come first. After introduce ourselves and break the ice we put hands to work with our interview in a room away from other people in the study.

-When were born and where? I was born on December 17, 1992 in Granada (Spain).

-At what age did you start to feel passion for tattoos? Before the tattoos I started drawing. It was cool me much draw every day, at any time and even in class he was always drawing. Tattoos in particular began to like me at age 15 but up to the age of 18 I started not tattooing. When he was 18 years old I saw that tattoos began to move by fashion and was a departure to the world of art. Rather than selling paintings in an art gallery I liked most capture my art on a canvas such as the skin.

-How to start tattooing? -What is the most exci-Of first I got in a study as an appren- ting of your work? tice. Based on make designs painting caps and sneakers I earned some money and I was buying little by little the machinery of tattoos.

-What I think your family and your friends when you decide to dedicate yourself to the world of tattoo? -My friends have taken it a little better than my family. My family thought I was crazy. Over time I’ve been showing them that striving, wanting and trying to be better in your work every day you can achieve the goals you want. Today my family is delighted. It is the opposite side from the beginning, what were the first day.

-What I like most is that tattoos are like a visual medium by which I communicate with people. Not only my client sees it also see it all people that cross with it and many people see my work. Many times people for a client who come down the street asking for tattoos I’ve done it and you can see the amount of detail that can have a tattoo. Now tattoos are not as those who had before on the issue of details. I like to be quite perfectionist. In addition I also like that my clients will be happy with every job and establishing a link while we miss those long hours sessions and others.

32

realistic want. In that case, I try to be more based on realism, i.e. I simplify a bit without losing detail or quality.

-Do you consider as a personal or distinctive trait in your work?

-What artists have influenced you? In principle Miguel Bohigues which is a great tattoo artist from Spain very close. Secondly I was setting at Matteo Pasqualin which is Italy and the last of the artists that I’ve noticed has been in Niki Norberg. They are all great artists of the black and white and in addition to influence me, I admire them.

33

Details and shadows and lights. As for the portraits, gestures and movement that faces both person like animals. It is not like when do you a photo for the carnet, which are dead images, without movement. In my works is movement and life.

-Do you remember the first tattoo you did?

If it was a shit enough fat (laughs). I did it to a friend of the Institute that was in my hands because I wanted to and I ordered it. Before doing so, I promised that in the near future, when I learned to make tattoos well it taparía it is. I did it with a machine that I didn’t know how it worked, -How would you define in fact the needle much trembled because she wasn’t well seized a your style of tattooing? hammer. -Are there any design that you feel predilection? -The truth is not, the designs we often here people do have the initiative and I don’t have to demand. Well now I have a design in mind that’s going to be Jim Carrey film color mask. With designs to color soil be very selective because I am a little learning and investigating the technique of color.

-Do you regret any tattoo that you have made as well as of your friend’s Institute? I regret some work that I’ve done that they were not within my style because they are jobs that you do when you’re an apprentice. You don’t do these jobs with the same desire that another tattoo that you would like to do. I regret not putting all the desire that perhaps, another tattoo artist in that style would have put them.

-Who never would a tattoo? It would never a tattoo to an insecure person and who do not know how to appreciate the hours and the enthusiasm with which you do your work. If someone comes to my Studio which has a base of what you want to do always try Guide to help you in your choice. If you don’t know that you want to tattoo and what you teach him like obviously we do not tattoo because tattoos are for life and possibly in the future that person say removing it

tattoo that you’ve refused to do?

No, I know a tattoo artist that not wearing tattoos, Boris, a world renowned tattooist. Boris does a tattoo and makes some amazing works. From my point of view I don’t know how that tattoo artist to see their work does not give desire to have one of these works on your skin. I think it is a matter of taste and a tattoo is something very personal.

The current brands that are taking materials with a little more than development of new technologies. Mainly disposables for comfort and hygiene.

35

-What was the first tattoo that you did?

My first tattoo was the logo of Los Angeles and I did it at age 18, when I started tattooing. Relate it with my name and surname (Alejandro Legaza) the “l” interlaced with the “a”, today in day is my signature. I do not regret I have. I regretted two I did after that and I’m taking them away.

ALEJANDRO LEGAZA

-What are your plans for the future? I have just turned 23 years and I have fulfilled my dream of riding a study in which I have a good team. My team is composed of various tattoo artists who are responsible for the various styles and a

good designer. I like that they are people who are always willing to give everything as for the tattoo, which give a good deal to the customer, which are good companions loaded with positivity and coming with a desire to do a good job. My future plans are to continue with

the dynamics of my study, participate in any Convention, tattoo me with some artists since I have a few tattoos and the few that I am taking them away and on all keep learning never stops learning.

-Do you see tattooing within ten years? If the view, after making so many details, allow me that I am tattooing. I am tattooing throughout life.

-Is there anything you don’t like in the world of tattoo? I don’t like the rivalry and deception which are two qualities that acquire some artists who dabble in the world of tattoo. I think those are qualities that do not allow the deve37

lopment of that person or persons who are to her about not I would and that none of my team took them.

-Which apprentice you see a good future? Laurent, of my team, he was born in Romania and now lives here in Granada. He gave by the tattoo a few months ago and carries a rate of development of vertigo. It does some amazing work. Jobs requiring steps and time to make them and he tripped them is getting a realism and a few textures. The short time that has been tattooing for work that makes is incredible.

-What kind of work are which you ask for more?

- And you, what kind of tattoos you like most do?

Photorealism of black-and-white objects such as cars, cylinders, Within the photorealism ask me things that have to do with engines I many pictures, cars, and celebri- quite like. Also portraits, sneakers, ties such as basketball and sports anything that comes from a good players. photograph.

38

-What do you think of teaching tattoo? Teach tattoo is good but you have to know what he wants to do the person that you teach. There are people who are dedicated to tattoo basically because it is easy money, and take advantage of this fashion. There are many people who want to tattoo and tattoo these artists do this just for the money. It is something in the short term because they are people who are not going to develop, will not see beyond making money. Then they’ll never develop talent or art that need to reach a future.

-Do you think that everyone might tattoo you may not know to draw? Few people can do this because you need a base of drawing. For example my apprentice has no basis of drawing and did a couple of portraits which the dimensions, the proportions of the face have been perfect. That is one of the most incredible things I’ve seen so far. Taking this example I believe, perfectly, that if it can be be tattooist without having some bases of drawing or anything like that. 39

-Do you think that it is the most important thing you should know an apprentice before tattooing? That tattoo is permanent and will stay there for life. You have to be very sure of what to do and how it should do. Also has to do a followup to this person (especially if it is the first tattoo) of as it is you have to heal and others so that this work always remains as the first day. My advice is that they devote you long to the world of tattoo because they are things that do not learn of the overnight. They require many hours of learning, tutorials, search information, practice, experienced in fur, areas and types of different works.

-What is your life like when not tattoo? When tattooed disagree with my partner, my family or my friends who are members of the study. Also I can be sleeping in my house because I haven’t finished tattoo at 3 o’clock in the morning. or I am with the car. The only hobby I have is the world of the motor.

“It is still early to know where to get Alejandro Legaza in the world of tattoo. What if I have clear is that you are on the right track. The success is achieved with effort and dedication to work and this is something that this tattoo artist has left me to see from the outset to come through the door of his study. I foresee a great success in his professional life. Surely it will be many years talking about him and his work.

MUSICAL TRENDS

THE ARCHITECT BUILDER SOUNDS Kraftwerk Kraftwerk, ‘powerhouse’ in German) is aGerman band from electronic music formed by Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider in1970 in Düsseldorf, and led by them to the departure of Schneider in 2008. Thecharacteristic sound of Kraftwerk combines repetitive rhythms with catchy melodies, mainly following a Western classical style of harmony, with instrumentationminimalistic and strictly electronic. The simplified lyrics are at times Sung through avocoder or generated by a speech synthesizer. Kraftwerk was one of the first groups inpopular electronic music and are considered pioneers in the area.

47

Ralf H端tter and Florian Schneider origins coincided in a kind of improvisation in thesummer of 1968 in Remscheid, near D端sseldorf Academy. Having similar musicalvisions, began in a group called the Organisation, performing concerts in galleries, universities and clubs.

This quintet released a single album, called Tone Float (listed byRCA Records in Britain) but was dissolved soon after. Moving away from thetraditional concepts of musical composition, Florian used eco and amplification unitsfor their flutes and violins. Ralf did basically the

same thing with electronic keyboards. They shared the stage with several musicians, often different in each performance, where he frequently improvised and experienced in long sessions.

PARTY REMEMBER OVER DRIVER Room Overdriver Overdrive was founded as a roomin 1993. During 1994 becomes one of the most important references of the capitalwithin the hatching of the culture

Nica Club in Spain. At the end of 1994 occurs close the room, caused by problemswith the nearby neighborhood. Starting from there occurs a huge vacuum in Madrid,to be closed both OVERDRIVE and other many halls that thrived nightlife. At the same time came a substantial change in the concept of techno, sounds from trance

and techno-acid, to the sounds of the emerging techno-minimal. For this reason,OVERDRIVE, with the punctual meetings organized by OVERDRIVE, aims to recall thegolden age of electronic culture in Madrid. Ricky 速

Abel Ramos

What was of Overdriver when ingurando was its doors? It was an amazing time, I livedit very intensely. Life was different from the now, people went to clubs as worshipperswho came every Saturday mass, as I say, and their religion was the music. I have somegreat memories was a room I think paradoxically nothingness and the musical stylevery very modern era for the season. People then didn’t have much access to themusic as it is now, who wanted to hear the music had that go there because you could not listen

to it or on the radio ordownload it from internet.

Seals or sticks works Abel Ramos? At that time what worked was the label danceopera, each month awesome “polotazo” and then you had the monsay seal, seal ofaverage Record, which was the label Undergraund, Media that also drew many issuesbut that it was more between Monsay and Dance Opera.

Would that impact creates Over Driver after having been closed so long? At that timewas more the night club that would be the cod of the time. And here we went more tosound more European and it seems that people will stay in memory and we arecarrying a line clean without getting you hits have much care product, image and wehave always maintained a consistent line that is what really matters and peopleappreciated it.

52

What is the Over Driver for Abel? After coming a time click on Attica, in a very famous room which is Temprals ofMadrid was a sound more Trison Merci. For my was everything, since I had much todo in the creation, since it was a partner of Estancia, I wore the music area and thepart of the spin-doctor.

There was a before and an after when close the Over Driver? For my Madrid Yes, Ialready nationally nose because not both met the market at that time because he onlyplayed here. After that come out Over Driver also came the Omen with Bolero 53 Iken, who was also the

“bomb”, then came the exilon is where it started Cristian Valeda, already started out sessionsmuch more serious with this sound so European that until then it had not beenpossible, so for my was a total change.

Dj Canito

What canito was in 1992 when overdrive began? I worked at a club in madrid calledArchi, that here was where I started professionally. In the overdriver people also wentin the afternoon but the people went in the afternoon after also going at night, thatwas incredible. The room opened on the 6 pm or as well and was closed when therewere no people or people already looked tired.

That music was put in the evenings? As we put much house trans and then the harcolis rubbed. The sessions were gradually rising. The music of the evening was nodifferent at night is still with the same sound, given the same importance to eveningsto nights.

That people will there? Since there is a very healthy roll, will people from with theirchildren has people who does not hear this kind of music outside, and peopleremember their times because that gets music known but without putting too muchsince it can be heavy.

That has echo overdriver to continue living as follows? Well, I think that Estancia it hasecho very well, has managed to maintain that spirit he had and has troubled to partieswithout losing the style.

That theme you have marked more in overdriver? It is very difficult but serious theplays to be this was that called the disk of the elephants because I had an 54 elephantsound.

Dj Pepo

Where was Pepo in 1992? After the movida Madrile単a and the golden age of Madridalready when it seemed that all seen was as overdriver came out. A lot of peoplecaptive you this already after the movida Madrile単a came out new topics. Estanciaadvocates overdriver much since it is a promoter who moves a lot for your brand.

55

There is a before and after overdriver opened and others local followed him, or to open new premises with these issues?

Is there a difference when it comes to living overdriver before now? There used to bevinyl and was for people that I had at the time and the dj enjoyed the technical andpeople enjoyed the moment and now is different. Before it was all more mechanicaland more creative to now.

With that theme would you choose? People asked me of petit prinx of elephants allhave commented on this issue in social networks everywhere.

The lights and sound as it was? It was awesome had to click very well because with you laces them and the music wasawesome.

56

Dj Wavesound

Where pinchabas at that time? He played in the afternoon and the important thingwas the disco and not by the dj now if people have target and if before the dj was notthe main rooms have worked with the resident dj.

What was wavesonund back in the 90s? Since I was very young and I was starting atthat time, I remember that it was evolving and growing the electronic movement andover was the change because it was a very large room that only had small rooms inMadrid came much people of the whole Spain to over.

What has over driver that has moved so much? People very well passed it and behindit all is the care of the brand thanks to Estancia, your you’re going to a party of overand notes an effort and with the organizers and they have a very close relationshipbecause they have always been in the trenches there with the PR. What is Over Driver for you?

Do seals manejabas?

Over is like my house because I’ve seen them grow and is like Trance and hard tranplaying athome. ce I liked the dance opera, Emmanuel, the If you had to pick up good record, hahouse. a disc representing Over Driver? How arose the set?

It is very difficult but I’m goingto tell the of Always evolving from dance opera the for least to most rising intensity bringingpeople up.

Dj Master Bon Z

Where were you in 1992? I at that time was resident in the discotheque of Alcorcón,Over Driver I have lived more friend client have never been resident there, if I was aresident in rebolcon and the style was the same. Would that seals poníais a there? Asthe seal over driver or a seal German, dance opera each to his style but all those wholeave were real good. Valencia was also very good but the first stage the secondalready left him too. The passage of time

when mixing it have more easy now you’re adapting. Have changed people and styles of the year 92 to now?

After closing over there was a before and after in Madrid? If that always, when at theend of the 90s many clubs and over close you’ve got in memory is as a culture, and you’ve met a lot of different people what was over for you?

The concept has not changedmuch, but what happens is that before when it was the novelty and now alreadypeople has adapted but continues to I as I lived it friend have the same mentaandclient I is that he lity. lived from points from the cab and from the bottom and that wasawesome, I has marked as a boy child. We can speak of as it was before and as it is now and that is something very special. DJ INK Makoky

That secret hidden Makoky? I already have 26 years playing electronic music, I wasworking at first in a room called the Rebolcon in the factory gave place to master bonz which I learned a lot and they passed through there many artists. The factory we were four years and there the residents were the Indian and I also spent an endlesselectronic music artists.

59

Continuous with the distribution of electronic music?

What expectations do you have for the future?

While I was working on thesesites also worked selling music to djs, there were 40 distribution seals were until 2009since the mp3 has changed everything and all vinyl shops were closing. From there we were traveling and we have been in the Canary Islands with a Studio that it had 5years. We returned to murcia working hard. Also were in the del mar menor magathen went to Ibiza in many private parties in festivals and supporting the techno area.I already returned to Madrid and we got a room called Endit going forward on theright foot.

As we continue with radioprograms, also in summer we have radio sound that is in the suid of the Lake which isa restaurant that is a lake.

He likes to makoky of the culture of the tattoo? For tattooshave been part of my life since childhood I wanted to tattoo me, everything you’ve been tattooed on the arms and the back has a meaning for my. I owe all my tattoosJosé Faitone “Nezumi Tatoo” is a very small and very familiar.

ROOM ENDIT Room endint is trying to instill this kind of music in the area south ofMadrid where club culture there and us is costing much work so people accept us. It isa very Curran room does not lack detail and have a good sound. All the djs who cometo the room can put music that wants that people always react with a good dance.

When passing a year we’ll be talking about endit otherwise speak of a club ofelectronic music that is what we are trying.

They are Japanese I love Japanese culture and Ihave studied much, I loved it the first time I saw a tattoo as well.

60

ORIENTAL TATTOOS Oriental tattoos have meanings intrinsic, hidden, explanations that everyone shouldknow at the time of sit down and think about our design, nor which to speak if anoriental tattoo is what we have in mind. It is, therefore, that today I invite you todiscover some of the hidden meanings behind the most recurring symbols in theJapanese tradition, which insurance you’ll want to keep in mind when you are goingto design your own tattoo.

Mask of Hannya Mask of Hannya is very similar to what occurs with the Oni, these masks have nothingto do with the figure of the devil or Satan, as erroneously usually believe. According towhat the Japanese folk tales, the Hannya were women who, by passion, jealousy, hatred, anger or envy, were transformed into abominable monsters

61

Dragons These Dragons deserve a separate chapter for each dragon has a their own meaning. But in tattoos, usually are symbol of good luck, very respected and blessed (asopposed to the European myths, where the dragon is confronted).
