Introduction As the end of another year approaches, many of us take advantage of opportunities to reflect on our accomplishments and to offer thanks for family, friends, and others who support and sustain us in our endeavors. Thank you for your generosity and support! In the pages of this publication, we will showcase some of the college’s most noteworthy initiatives and events. Here we reflect with pride on the accomplishments of 2015, and recount with gratitude the partnership and collaboration of alumni and donors that made so much of this possible. We also take this opportunity to thank each of our donors. Above all, we want to especially recognize and celebrate two individuals who have shaped the college in fundamental and long-lasting ways and who take their leave of us in 2015. Alfred Taubman’s splendid gift of 16 years ago still stands as the largest single gift ever to a college of architecture and urban planning. His $30 million investment added a measure of vital capacity that has made a critical difference to the college. Not only did the gift provide the college the means to compete in a different arena, it also provided a measure of confidence that enabled us to aspire to another strata of excellence. In this way, Mr. Taubman’s legacy touches every member of the college community. In 2014, Mr. Taubman once again demonstrated his incredible generosity and commitment to the college with an additional $12.5 million gift to fund a significant addition and renovation to the building. Just two days before his death last April, he enthusiastically triggered the robot that lifted the first shovelful of dirt at the ceremonial groundbreaking for the A. Alfred Taubman Wing of the Art & Architecture Building. Mr. Taubman was a shrewd, passionate,
and engaged supporter of educational and cultural causes who has left his mark on a brilliant diversity of institutions. We are very proud and grateful to be among them. When Dean Ponce de Leon arrived in Ann Arbor in 2008, she quickly identified key areas with the greatest potential for advancing the college’s mission and enhancing its quality. Building on the historic strengths of the college and the resources across the University of Michigan campus, she worked to foster more collaborative research and teaching opportunities both within the college and across campus. She directed resources into creating the very best digital fabrication lab in the country. She enriched the student experience with many opportunities for students to learn from practitioners and scholars, both experienced thinkers and emerging voices from across the country and around the world through an expanded conference and lecture series. She has also sought and employed strategies to create a more inclusive environment to attract and support a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff. Dean Ponce de Leon will step down as dean on December 31, 2015 to accept the deanship at Princeton. She will not be easy to replace but her impact on the college leaves it in a position to attract the most qualified, creative, and talented candidates. We owe a great debt of gratitude to these individuals. Their commitment to excellence will continue to shape our journey as we search for the next dean of Taubman College. With sincere thanks for your investment in Taubman College from its students, faculty, and staff, we provide reflections of the recent past to inspire our future.

A new entrance gives Taubman College a stronger presence on North Campus
Taubman College Building Renovation and Expansion Due to the generosity of the late Alfred Taubman, the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning will see an upgrade and expansion of our facilities by the Fall of 2017. Begun in 2009, the project is the result of many years of faculty, student and staff planning. The project will provide an additional 36,000 sq. ft. to our current 72,000 sq. ft. facilities, and renovate approximately 11,000 sq. ft. of those facilities. The project also encompasses a much-needed mechanical and electrical upgrade to the old building, as well as a new roof. The building addition and renovations will cost $28.5 million,

with an additional $2.8 million allocated for building maintenance. These costs are covered by building gifts from Alfred Taubman, a building gift from King Stutzman, matching funds from the Office of the President of the University of Michigan, as well as funding from the Provost Office and the Office of the Chief Financial Officer. Terry Sargent Architecture Scholarship In November of last year, the college lost a valued and talented alumnus and community member: Terry Sargent, B.Arch.’71, M.U.P.’73. Terry was a founding member of the nationally-recognized architecture firm Lord Aeck Sargent and had contributed to many important and award-winning designs, including the renovation of the Memorial Phoenix Project across the street from the Art and Architecture Building on North Campus. In the weeks following Terry’s death, the college received over $40,000 in gifts and pledges in his memory, including a generous commitment by Lord Aeck Sargent for $25,000 over five years. If you have already made a gift to the Terry Sargent Architecture Scholarship, thank you. Please consider an additional contribution or a first time gift to the scholarship today. A retrospective of Terry’s work, titled Triptychs: Terry Sargent’s Building Designs in Sketches, Renderings, and Photographs, is planned for November 11, 2016 through January 6, 2017 at Taubman College. New and Noteworthy Scholarships As part of the current Victors for Michigan campaign, the University of Michigan has set an ambitious goal of raising $1 billion for student support. At Taubman College, we are committed to supporting this goal. Each year, the wonderful generosity of our alumni gives us the distinct honor of recognizing a few new initiatives that have been put into place to provide student support. This year we are proud to announce the following new scholarships under construction:
Dean Monica Ponce de Leon and Gregory Saldaña Scholarship Endowment As a testament to their affection and commitment to the college, Dean Monica Ponce de Leon and her husband Gregory Saldaña have established a scholarship endowment. The scholarship will be awarded to undergraduate architecture students who are the first generation in their family to attend college.

John and Patricia Myefski Endowed Scholarship John Myefski, B.S.’84, M.Arch.’86, and his wife Patricia recently established a new scholarship benefiting undergraduate students at the College. In recognition of John’s upbringing, and in an effort to enhance geographical diversity in the undergraduate program, their scholarship is specifically designed to support those students who, like John, hail from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Anthony and Vivian Mosellie Endowed Scholarship Raised in Brooklyn, Anthony Mosellie, B.S.’84, and his wife Vivian have generously created a scholarship designed to support students following in Anthony’s footsteps by choosing to attend Taubman College from out-of-state. In doing so, they continue to ensure that talented students from around the country can benefit from a Taubman College education.
Michigan Matching Initiative for Student Support The Michigan Matching Initiative for Student Support is back with one key change — the threshold for qualifying gifts has been lowered to $50,000. As before, the University will match $1 for every $4 donated to establish a new student support fund or add to an existing fund. Sending Our Students into the World and Bringing the World to our Students As one of our main priorities during the current Victors for Michigan Campaign, we have chosen to place a particular emphasis on experiences that expose our students to a wide variety of other cultures by allowing international travel during their time at the college.
Guido A. and Elizabeth H. Binda Foundation Match Challenge
For almost 100 years we have awarded the George G. Booth Traveling Fellowship to one alumnus under the age of 30, with the understanding that they use the award to pursue a course of travel that will both broaden their perspectives and expand their horizons. More recently we have chosen to focus on increasing the travel for our current students.
For many years, Taubman College has benefited from the generosity of the Guido A. and Elizabeth H. Binda Foundation. Over the years, the foundation has provided much support for our initiatives, and each year we are able to award two new recurring scholarships that help provide our students with the assistance they need to more fully concentrate on their studies during their time here. Two years ago, the foundation offered another generous offer to our leadership: if we could raise $15,000 in new money in each of the following three years, they would match that amount by donating $15,000 specifically designated for travel courses. With your help we aim to meet the Binda Foundation challenge. Especially if you benefited from a travel experience while you were a student, please give today and help to continue enhancing our students’ travel opportunities.

George G. Booth Travelling Fellowship The George G. Booth Travelling Fellowship was first awarded in 1924. It is offered annually by the University of Michigan, A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning and presently carries a stipend of up to $10,000. The fellowship provides the opportunity for recent alumni/ae to research some special aspect of architecture that requires international travel. To be eligible for the competition you must be 30 years of age or under before the March 31, 2016 application deadline and have a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Michigan or expect to graduate by August 2016. The award is made on the basis of the applicant’s academic and professional record (résumé) and submission of a well-documented plan of international study (proposal) detailing research subject matter and how work will be carried out. Submissions must be received electronically by 10 am EST on Tuesday, March 31, 2015. 2015 Architecture Student Research Grants exhibition in the Taubman College Gallery
2015 Architecture Student Research Grants Each year, bachelor and master of architecture students raise money for a class gift that funds research projects by ongoing students. This initiative is called the Architecture Student Research Grant (ASRG). The tradition, initiated by the Class of 2013, provides a unique opportunity for students to support outstanding research from their peers. Open to all current undergraduate or graduate students from the architecture programs graduating in 2016, project proposals take many forms: built objects, public installations, experiments in representation, curatorial practices, written works, and more. Awarded projects culminate in both an exhibition and a presentation to the College. This year, with generous support from Dean Monica Ponce de Leon and the Taubman College Alumni Board, the Class of 2015 awarded three prizes of $1700 each to interdisciplinary teams of graduate and undergraduate students. Alumni Board of Governors Creates New Endowed Scholarship Award As it has for more than 30 years, the college’s board of governors convenes in Ann Arbor twice each year. They come from across the country at their own expense dedicating several days each year to learn about current issues at the school and provide real world perspective. As part of their commitment to the school, board members have also provided financial support for student scholarships and special initiatives. In response to the University-wide challenge to raise $1 billion for student support as part of the Victors for Michigan campaign, the Alumni Board of Governors committed to creating a new endowed scholarship. The Taubman College Alumni Board of Governors Endowed Scholarship Award will be a needbased award, that alternates among undergraduate architecture, graduate architecture, and planning. 2015 Raoul Wallenberg Lecture: Daniel Libeskind On Friday, March 27th, the college welcomed back distinguished architect Daniel Libeskind, who delivered his first Raoul Wallenberg lecture in 1995. Named after the college’s most famous alumnus — a humanitarian famous for his nobility and courage in rescuing thousands of Jews from persecution in World War II Hungary — the lecture brings to campus those members of the profession who evidence a commitment to social justice and affecting change in their work. Daniel Libeskind has been the architect of record on a number of exciting projects, including the Jewish Museum in Berlin, the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, and the Imperial War Museum North in Manchester, England. Exactly 20 years ago, he delivered another Wallenberg lecture, and his address this year — entitled “The Language of Architecture” — was further evidence of the role of change in his work and his groundbreaking method of design. To accommodate a record crowd present for the lecture, it was moved to the spacious Michigan Union.

Research Through Making 2015 Since early in Dean Monica Ponce de Leon’s tenure, the college has been proud to feature a new initiative focused on bending and dissolving the traditionally bold line separating academic research and professional practice in architecture. Thanks to the generosity of many of our donors, this year Research Through Making celebrated its 6th anniversary. Taubman College Liberty Research Annex: To increase faculty research space and our presence in Ann Arbor, beginning in 2010 the college invested in leasing from David Strosberg, B.S.’76, the flexible space at 305 W. Liberty St. The space functions as a think-tank for faculty and students and houses a large exhibition area open to the community seven days a week. During thesis reviews, the graduating class takes over the space for their final reviews which culminate in our annual commencement thesis show.
Michigan Research Studio: With support from the Kresge Foundation, in 2014 Taubman College inaugurated the Michigan Research Studio in Detroit to provide a home base to the wide range of programs the college pursues in the city. Notable among them is the Michigan-Mellon Project on Egalitarianism in the Metropolis (a collaboration between LSA and Taubman College), as well as the Michigan Architecture Prep Program (in collaboration with seven Detroit High Schools). The space was designed by McIntosh Poris Associates (Michael Poris, B.S.’85 and Laurie Hughet-Hiller, B.S.’04, M.Arch.’06).
Taubman College FABLab: Building on her experience at Harvard and with financial support from the Provost’s Office, Dean Ponce de Leon expanded the college’s FABLab beginning in 2008. Run by students, for students, the FABLab is today a leader among academic institutions around the world. Utilizing digital tools, from rapid prototyping to robotics, students are able to experiment with emerging technologies independently or as part of their coursework, while the faculty can pursue cutting edge creative practice and research.
Farewell to Dean Monica Ponce de Leon Monica Ponce de Leon arrived at the University of Michigan in 2008 confident that here she would find the multiplicity of voices essential to a meaningful examination of architecture and planning pedagogy and practice. During her tenure, she built on the college’s tradition of research and experimentation by expanding technology and funding resources to support and seed meaningful inquiry as well as a dedicated space to allow for experimentation at a larger scale. She was committed to transforming our curriculum to provide students the space for critical thinking. Although she leaves in December to assume the deanship at Princeton University, by her own admission, Dean Ponce de Leon will be a “Wolverine for life.” She and her family plan to maintain a deep connection to Taubman College and the state of Michigan. We thank her for the energy and drive with which she has led the college and wish her the very best in all her future endeavors.

Experts in Studio: Beginning in 2010 each term Taubman College invites to campus practitioners across various disciplines to work with students on college-wide or studio-tied workshops. With this program historians, theorists, architects, planners, landscape architects, urban designers, engineers, environmental experts, digital fabricators, computational experts and social scientists, among others, have worked hands-on with students and faculty to engage in significant topics within our disciplines.

New Curriculums: Under Dean Ponce de Leon, four concentrations (Digital Technology, Material Systems, Design and Health, Conservation) were introduced to the Master of Science in Architecture degree; the Master of Urban Design degree was restructured to focus on one city per year; the Master of Urban Planning degree focused on sustainability and social justice; and in all curriculums, interdisciplinary and co-taught courses increased, infusing multiple voices into courses. The UARTS series (creativity courses co-taught by faculty in engineering, architecture, music and art) grew to enroll more than 200 students per year.

Research Through Making + Research on the City: Implemented by Dean Ponce de Leon, these programs have competitively awarded grants to faculty through external peer review. Since 2009, projects seeded by Research Through Making and Research on the City have received 20 awards including seven R +D Awards and one P/A Award Citation and appeared in over 30 articles. In addition, the seed grants generated more than $800,000 in additional research funding.

In Memoriam: A. Alfred Taubman (1924-2015) He shared with us his vision, generosity, and creative spirit. We are honored to continue his legacy. It is with much gratitude and fondness that we celebrate the life and legacy of A. Alfred Taubman, our college’s namesake and largest donor. Mr. Taubman was one of America’s most successful entrepreneurs. He was recognized as a pioneer and visionary in America’s shopping center industry and was active in a wide range of business, civic, cultural, and educational activities around the world. His gifts of vision, generosity and creative spirit will continue to empower the next generation of designers and planners. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you Mr. Taubman. A. In 1999, Mr. Taubman donated $30 million to the College of Architecture and Urban Planning — one of the largest gifts in the history of the University of Michigan and, at the time, the largest ever to a school of architecture. His recent gift of $12.5 million brought us together on April 15, 2015 to break ground for the A. Alfred Taubman Wing. Transformational gifts like Mr. Taubman’s will keep us at the forefront of our fields for years to come. The Spring Break Externship Program helps students gain experience and learn more about their intended profession through a one-week externship. This program helps prepare students for the transition from school to career. Alumni are invited to host a student at their firm. Last spring, more than 200 Taubman College students spent spring break observing and working with professionals in architecture, urban planning and urban design firms across the United States. Sponsors in San Francisco held a reception for externs and their hosts.

Michigan Architecture Prep Under the leadership of Dean Monica Ponce de Leon and Associate Dean Milton Curry, in collaboration with seven Detroit high schools, on December 2014 Taubman College launched an innovative academic program for high school students interested in exploring architecture as a professional path. Housed at the Michigan Research Studio, the program offers design studio instruction to juniors who receive high school credit in math and visual studies. The students are taught by teaching fellows five days a week for half a day and in addition to design instruction receive portfolio and college advice as well as field trips and exposure to architecture offices in the Detroit area. The learning environment for the program includes the Michigan Research Studio, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, the City of Detroit, and the professional workspaces of architects and designers. Students develop a visual portfolio of work, learn to communicate through drawing, writing and speaking, and gain knowledge about pathways from high school to postsecondary education and careers in architecture and design. ArcPrep is made possible with support from U-M’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, U-M’s School of Education, DPS and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. 2015 Distinguished Alumna Award and Lecture On October 9, 2015, Taubman College welcomed back to campus one of our most renowned alumni: urban planner and noted academic Kristina Ford, Ph.D.’76. Kristina served as Director of City Planning for New Orleans for ten years, and afterwards came to prominence for her extensive public analysis of the problems facing the city in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In this role, she was featured on CNN, NBC, and National Public Radio. Today, Kristina and her husband Richard reside in New York City and East Boothbay, Maine, and she serves as Professor of Professional Practice in Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. Kristina was welcomed warmly to campus, and her lecture was met with broad interest from students, faculty, and alumni alike.
