It’s four hours from the nearest airport to the prairie club, but anyone who has played Ballyneal or Sand Hills understands the allure of this part of the world. Bring the big sticks for Tom Lehman’s Dunes, a wind-torn links-style course stretching more than 8,000 yards. Then test your short game against the wildly undulating greens of the par-3 Horse Course. Opens May 2010.

Royal Dornoch and Nairn will have a new neighbor in the Highlands this July. Situated next to the 16th-century Castle Stuart, the course is designed by architects Gil Hanse and Mark Parsinen. The Moray Firth, a sparkling inlet, provides a stunning backdrop, particularly on the par-3 11th, where wild fescue grasses and ragged-edged bunkers frame a massive green. Opens July 2009.

Major Dan Rooney, an F-16 fighter pilot in the Air National Guard, established Patriot Golf Day as a way for golfers to honor military service by donating to a scholarship fund for the families of those killed or disabled in action. With holes named for patriots like George Washington and Rosa Parks, the Robert Trent Jones II-designed course will wind across rolling prairie. Opens fall 2009.

The idea for Albany was hatched in 2004 when Ernie Els, Tiger Woods, and British ex-pat trader Joe Lewis put their heads together to conceive of the ideal family retreat. When 565 acres of beachfront property went on the market on New Providence Island, they made an offer the next day. Els’ firm designed the 7,400-yard course with natural coastal dunes and a crystal-blue serpentine lake. Opens 2010.

Expect uphill blind shots and classic “Redan” and “Eden” par 3s inspired by the famous Scottish originals. Opens June 2009.

MOOR LIKE IT Clockwise from left: Prices at Altamer rise to a huge L3.6m; Porto Montenegro is hotly anticipated; if you don’t want the Caribbean, try Eden Island in the Seychelles; Quintessentially is marketing V...Greece on the World of Dubai

Alternatively, Scrub Island is a brandnew private island resort, which opens in July and, as well as offering ready-built villas, will also offer lots on which you can build your own home. Villa prices start at L2.3m (scrubisland.com). There are other places to splash the cash in the Caribbean-Altamer, for example, is a development of nine ‘architectural signature residences’ that Savills is marketing in Anguilla. Prices range from L10.2 up to an eye-watering L36m. You get your own beach, pool, wine cellar and cinema, as well as private jet facilities and, of course, a megayacht marina. ‘There are five billionaires there already,’ says Weston Baker. Further along in the Bahamas, meanwhile, plans are well underway for the development of Albany, a luxury beach resort on the island of New Providence. Part of the development will be completed later this year; the 565-acre site will eventually include a deep water, megayacht marina with 13 dedicated apartment buildings containing about 100 units, which will range in price from L2.6m to L26m (knightfrank.co.uk/international). If the Caribbean’s not your thing but you still want hot, head to Eden Island in the Seychilles, a purpose-built, 100-acre addition to the existing 115 islands of the Seychilles, which will have 38 acres of private waterways and include a marina that specializes in accommodating both super- and mega-yachts, even those over 80m in length. Every unit at Eden Island comes with its own private mooring, either right in front of or close to their villa (savills.co.uk/ abroad). Or what about Dubai? This playground for the rich has its property Mecca in Dubai marina, where anyone who is anyone wants a spot for their boat, ‘Dubai was a desert, so anything along the boating line is seen as a luxury,’ says Hannah Rogerson, head of the Middle Eastern department of top-end search agency Quintessentially Estates. ‘It’s very difficult to get hold of water for your own little mooring, so if a property has that as an addition, it’s something to get excited about.’ Despite the sand, Dubai is trying to establish itself as the Marina Capital of the World, and an international destination for the world’s super-yacht owners, with 30,000 estimated berths being built over the next five years. If Europe is more your thing, but you want somewhere up and coming, Croatia is the place to look, says Weston Baker. ‘It is second to none in terms of sailing.’ New legislation concerning development also means that opportunities for marina facilities are opening up. The most talked-about of these is Porto Montenegro, an extravagantly ambitious project that will see the former cold war

naval base of Tivat, just north of Corfu, turned into one of the largest marinas in the Med, with 650 berths that include space for 130-150 super-yachts. ‘It will be specifically targeted as a home port for these yachts all year round,’ explains Oliver Corlette, managing director of the scheme. Plans are for about 100 berths to be complete by this summer; about 25 to 30 apartments are also just being released on to the market, priced between L315,000 and L1.8m -apartment owners will also get a 75 per cent discount on a berth for the first three years of ownership (portmontenegro.com). Tempted by what’s out there but don’t own a yacht? Despite the demand for boats, there are deals to be had, as cash-strapped financers and bankers start trading in their gin palaces. Earlier in the autumn, the sellers of one of the world’s most luxurious yachtsthe 164ft Alibella, offered a L8.5m discount to a buyer prepared to complete a deal within 30 days, bringing the price down to L22m. Candyscape, the floating home of super-developers the Candy brothers, can be yours for L11.7m, reduced from L13.9m (edminstoncompany.com). The yachting industry may still be booming when it comes to building the boats, but in this market, there’s always room for a bargain. Something that the modest Ratty might be more inclined to approve of.

t is rare to find a project with as many notable names as Albany, a 565-acre resort community under construction on the southwest coast of New Providence Island in the Bahamas. Developed by Tiger Woods and Ernie Els, as well as Joe Lewis, the British billionaire who heads the Tavistock Group investment firm, the project counts Robert A. M. Stern and Charles Gwathmey among its architects, and its master plan was designed by Andrés Duany, known for his work on the Seaside, Fla., New Urbanist community. Plans call for 325 residences, a boutique hotel and an 18-hole golf course designed by Mr. Els. Homesite buyers

estled among 565 oceanfront acres on the southwestern end of New Providence in The Bahamas, Albany is best described as a masterpiece in the making. Celebrating the very best in island living, Albany will feature a luxury boutique hotel and approximately 325 residences that include beachfront, beach club and golf course custom homes, equestrian ranchettes and luxurious marina residences designed by some of the most notable architects in the world. Combined with the finest amenities ever assembled in a resort community— including a mega-yacht marina, an 18-hole championship golf course designed by top pro golfer Ernie Els, an equestrian centre, beach club and family water park – Albany is a showcase of natural beauty, architectural innovation and exceptional amenities. Scheduled to open in 2010, Albany is the collective vision of its developers, private investment company Tavistock Group and golf icons Tiger Woods and Ernie Els who wanted to create a special place in The Bahamas. The perfect setting for those who desire the epitome of luxury with direct access to the ocean, Albany has attracted families from across the globe.

“Albany has been designed to deliver something for everyone,” said Christopher Anand, Albany’s managing director. “The community has an array of amenities that appeal to every member of the family.” Albany’s location makes the resort community not only a perfect island escape, but an easy one, too. New Providence’s alluring landscape and rich Bahamian heritage coupled with its proximity to Nassau’s international airport (which offers several non-stop flights daily from major US and European cities) convinced Albany’s developers to build their luxury resort property there. With construction underway on an assortment of Albany’s world-class amenities and its luxury boutique hotel, a vision that is several years in the making moves closer to reality. Substantial construction has been completed on the Albany Cottages, the first 40 units that form the cornerstone of Albany’s luxury boutique hotel. Comprising three to five bedrooms, the cottages are inspired by traditional Bahamian architecture and offer charming outdoor living spaces, including private pools and gardens. The 71-slip mega-yacht marina, that will accommodate vessels as large as 240 feet, will open in 2010. Once finished, the marina will rival the great resort ports of the world with a state-of-the-art concrete dock system, hightech communication systems at each slip and one-touch dialing for access to resort amenities and services.

Architect Robert A.M. Stern is just one of the big names attached to Albany, a 565-acre oceanfront resort on New Providence Island in the Bahamas. Named after the historic, formerly private beachside mansion that sits in the heart of the community, Albany is a partnership between private investment company Tavistock Group and golfers Tiger Woods and Ernie Els. Albany will feature a luxury boutique hotel and approximately 350 residences that include beachfront, beach club and golf course custom homes, equestrian ranchettes and luxurious marina residences. The amenity-rich sanctuary boasts a mega-yacht marina, an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Els, an equestrian center, beach club, full-service spa and fitness center, kids’ clubhouse and family water park. The 71-slip mega-yacht marina, which will accommodate vessels as large as 240 feet, will rival the great resort ports of the world with a state-of-the-art concrete dock system, high-tech communication systems at each slip and one-touch dialing for access to resort amenities and services. Albany’s links-style championship course, which features four sets of tees measuring more than 7,400 yards from the back tees, will offer one of the purest golf experiences with fairways free of residential development. The planned 15-acre equestrian center will accommodate various riding disciplines. The beach club will serve as the heartbeat of the community featuring an elegant dining room and second-floor adult lounge. A nearby family restaurant will provide an ideal place for families to gather for breakfast, lunch, casual dinners and special events. An enclave of northside amenities centered on sports, fitness and relaxation will include a fullyequipped fitness complex furnished with a lap pool, a boxing ring and best-in-class personal training equipment, and a racquet centre outfitted with lighted Har-Tru tennis courts. A full-service spa will offer exquisite individual treatment pavilions. The Conch House, a supervised clubhouse just for kids, will offer activity centers for various age groups and appointment-based child care. A family water park will feature an assortment of pools, slides, grottoes and waterfalls. Albany’s location makes the resort community not only a perfect island escape, but an easy one, too. Located just seven minutes and five miles from Nassau’s international airport, Albany is easily accessible with several non-stop flights daily from major cities. With construction well underway, Albany is slated to open Fall 2010. From $4 million.

Community life and megayacht mooring in the Bahamas by Sarah Devlin

A few years ago, all eyes in the Bahamas were on the island of New Providence. Legendary golfers Tiger Woods and Ernie Els got together with their friend Joe Lewis, founder of the international investment firm Tavistock Group, to purchase the Albany House, a plantation-style home located on the southwestern corner of the island. Immediately, they drafted plans to build a luxury 565-acre (229-hectare) resort on its site to include an Ernie Els-designed 18-hole golf course, an equestrian centre with ranchettes, luxury three- to five-bedroom ‘cottages’, custom home lots, a beach club, and a marina facility with 100 waterfront residences and over 70 wet slips for megayachts up to 240 feet (73m). Two-thirds of the Bahamian population - when away from the hustle and bustle of lives in New Providence, primarily because Nassau - has been considered a paradise by the island is home to Nassau, the capital and many, while nearby Freeport continued to commercial centre for the Bahamas. The island garner its reputation as a ‘resort’ destination. itself has been a popular tourist destination as Truth be told, New Providence has welcomed it has a rich cultural background and existed as the resort crowd via cruise ship for many years a pirate haven in the 18th century. Surrounded and the Albany House - originally owned by by old shipwrecks and coral reefs, the island renowned Hollywood producer Jean Chalopin Under construction: the corner of the marina facing north and east. - has seen its own share of tourists as the site of two movies, most notably the James Bond film ‘Casino Royale’. With this new development, the island of visitors and will welcome an residents from a higher income bracket and may begin to enjoy the riches of luxury economic development. The existing Albany House, which is approximately 77 feet (24m) from the water, will be the cornerstone for the new community and will serve as a high-end luxury Beach Club with an indoor restaurant and a large terrace. “British West Indies on the outside,” says Doug McMahon, managing director for the Tavistock Group, “while the inside will have a more contemporary vibe”. The Tavistock Group - the leader of the entire enterprise - is a global private investment firm founded 30 years ago by Joe Lewis. The company has grown to encompass a broad portfolio around the world including luxury residential properties, master planned real estate development, sports teams and sporting events, and restaurants. The group’s residential communities include the top-rated Lake Nona Golf and Country Club in Orlando, Florida; Old Fort Bay in the Bahamas; and Isleworth Golf and Country Club, also in Orlando. In other words, a project such as this is nothing new for them. Overall, the Albany project, scheduled for a late 2010 grand opening, has garnered input from almost 20 architectural rms, and a myriad of international and local consultants, contractors and builders, including Bellingham Marine Industries (BMI), which is primarily responsible for the marina construction. BMI has been contracted for the recently completed Turks and Caicos Yacht Club, a 135-slip stateof-the-art eco-friendly marina in Turks and Caicos capable of berthing yachts up to 200 feet (61m), the soon-to-be-completed 300-slip Marina Pez Vela in Costa Rica, Chub Cay Marina in the Berry Islands and Emerald Bay Marina in Great Exuma. The Albany marina, when complete, will include the aforementioned wet slips, a recently dredged mile-long channel, dry storage for yachts up to 42 feet (13m), and space to turn a 300ft (91m) yacht. “Tiger and Joe have large yachts,” says McMahon. “The marina had to fit those.” Indeed, the marina will

have an 18ft (5m) basin, capable of handling a boat with a 16ft (5m) draft. “Turrell, Hall & Associates did a phenomenal job to make it work in the South Ocean,” McMahon adds. “It sets a new standard for marina offerings in the Bahamas.” BMI was brought into the project via Turrell, Hall & Associates, which is responsible for engineering, designing, and managing construction for the proposed 15-acre (6hectare) marina. Work includes an extensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for the entire project. The contract is particularly apt as Turrell specialises in considering the specific needs of megayachts such as concierge services, access for provisioning, and special fuelling and crew facilities. The firm also offers operational expertise, facility management and marina staff training in fuel spill and emergency response procedures via its association with Dream Harbors (Naples, Florida), which offers operational support in marina development and best management practices. For the Albany project, Turrell, Hall & Associates relied on its own yacht registry database. “We use the database to design marinas so berthing spaces and accommodations are adequate for today’s vessels,” says Joe Cunningham, staff engineer for Turrell, Hall & Associates. “The database analyses the average beams, drafts, power demands and other information for thousands of yachts registered throughout the world and is continuously updated as new yachts come online,” he adds. BMI is no stranger to Turrell, Hall & Associates as they’ve worked together on various projects for over 20 years. “We have built a number of marinas they have been the planner/permitting engineer for in southwest Florida, the Keys and the Bahamas,” says Steve Ryder, manager of project development at BMI. “Dream Harbor owns and operates marinas in Florida and we have built their facilities at Naples Boat Club and Ocean Club Marina in Port Canaveral.” The scope of BMI’s work includes structural engineering and construction services for the dock and pile system. The team will also construct the utility systems with all the latest in fire, health, safety, communication, environmental and fuel systems, including many aesthetic upgrades. “This marina, when

completed, will incorporate many of the details and requirements we have developed in the 50 years we’ve been building marinas and yet Albany will have a number of significant upgrades for the vessels who will call the marina home,” Ryder confirms. Although BMI had not worked with the Tavistock Group in the past, Ryder says Turrell was “aware of our abilities and we were familiar with them from their development projects such as Lake Nona and Isleworth in the Orlando area.” Lining the marina, the Albany project’s plans include 11 buildings, housing 100 waterfront apartments with a classic design and views of the marina and surrounding ocean. As with many tropical locations, the apartments will focus on warm-weather living with vanishing walls of glass, penthouses with swimming pools and 30% outdoor living space. The entire community was designed by the highly influential modern architect Andres Duany of Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company (Miami, Florida), a firm responsible for Alys Beach currently under construction in Florida, the Windsor Club in Vero Beach, Florida, and Seaside - a revolutionary 80-acre (32-hectare) ‘new urban’ development along the Florida panhandle founded and designed in the early 1980s. McMahon says that Duany drew inspiration for the Albany project from other coastal communities, such as Edgartown and

www.marinaworld.com - May/June 2009

Martha’s Vineyard - both located in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, noted for its traditional small-town design. The result will be a pedestrian-friendly community with streets that address the ocean. Although designed by various architects, “the buildings will relate to each other, relate to the street, relate to the neighbourhood,” says McMahon. “There will be a reason for everything.” As for environmental-group pushback, which comes as standard with any large construction job regardless of location, one local group did approach Tavistock and question their intentions, but quickly ended its campaign. What it comes down to, McMahon states, is communication. “If a developer honours its commitments, things quiet down,” he says. “We have a commitment to be a good environmental steward. Plus, we have incentive! We’re all attracted to the natural beauty in the Bahamas. The last thing we want to do is mess that up.” For example, jetties will be constructed both north and south of the new inlet to an existing yacht basin - dug by the previous owner - to keep sand on the beaches and out of the channel. Natural stone rip-rap will line the entrance channel, tying into the jetties to dissipate wave energy. As the Albany project has 3,200 linear feet (975m) of shoreline, clean sand will be placed on the beaches as is common practice to offset any erosion. The beaches will then be consistently monitored over time. In the long run, the jetties will increase habitat for marine life and will eventually replenish beaches in New Providence that have been eroding over the last 50 years. Albany will also buck the ‘celebrity developer’ trend. McMahon points out that when celebrity shareholders lend their names to various developments and projects, they often just sit in the background or walk away after a period of time. This has led to a certain amount of cynicism in resort areas looking to court major developers. Not the case here. “Joe. Tiger. Ernie,” McMahon states. “When they say they’ll do something, they do it. These three have everything to do with this project and they are powerful shareholders even with these current economic headwinds. They chose to do this as friends.” ALBANY Tel: (888) 909-7001 | Email: info@albanybahamas.com www.albanybahamas.com

Golf International: Safe Houses in the Sun- January/February 2009

PROPERTY ABROAD ROUND-UP

Safe houses in the sun THE BAHAMAS

The elegantly understated Albany House on New Providence Island where M debriefed you in Casino Royale is now at the heart of a new luxury development. Albany is backed by Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, and the Tavistock group, who already own two of the best country clubs in America: Lake Nona and Isleworth in Florida. Due for completion in 2010, the 565-acre oceanfront resort is seven minutes from Nassau international airport and will have a boutique hotel, spa, mega-yacht marina, which can take 250-foot floating vodka palaces, and 350 residential units ranging from beachfront apartments to Scaramangastyle five-bed villas. The big sales launch is starting this Christmas, but 85 properties priced between L2.5m and L25m have already been sold. With five par threes and five fives, Els is designing the 7,400-yard course, complete with first-class practice facilities and elegant clubhouse, for those post-game martinis. The shops, restaurants and beaches should keep the next Bond girl

happy for days. Like you, 007, Albany combines classic style and innovation, with just a dash of adventure. For details, www.knightfrank.co.uk/international

THAILAND Your heroics off the coast of Phuket in The Man with the Golden Gun made quite a splash - one of the tall, erect limestone rocks thrusting out of Phang Nga Bay is now called James Bond Island. Overlooking the very same stretch of water, The Yamu will have a chic 69-room hotel and two villa developments. The 13

Phillippe Starck-designed Club Villas, ready in November 2009, are very agent provocateur: television sets rising out of bed ends, the bathtub in the bedroom, 24-hour butler service, and infinity pools on large terraces with uninterrupted views of the ocean. There is a wine and cigar room for you, and a chocolate room for me. Imagine! The L1.25m price tag may look steep on your pay scale, but if you only use your getaway 45 days a year, you earn 45% of the gross rental on the other 320 days. CHAMONIX When you were dicing with death on the Chamonix ski slopes during the filming The World is not Enough, you probably weren’t thinking abou the French Alps as a perfect summer and winter sports destination. As well as world class off-piste skiing and rock climbing, Chamonix has a 6,645- yard Robert Trent Jones Snr. course with views of Mont Blanc. Relatively flat for an alpine course, wellplaced bunkers and water hazards provide a challenge even for a nine-handicapper like you. For something cheerful and relatively cheap, the fully furnished apartments in Les Terrasses de Veret in nearby Flaine give you give weeks usage a year if you join their rental scheme, which hopefully pays off a chunk of your investment. At L128,000, even an M16 underling could afford a one-bed apartment. The next Electra King, though, might feel more at home in the upmarket Les Chalets de Belvoir in Combloux just down the road from ritzy Megeve. Less than an hour from Geneva aiport, with a luxury spa, casino and Michelin-starred cuisine close by, the six exclusive chalets have indoor pools and private cinemas, good for reviewing past assignments. With either four or five bedrooms, the chalets are priced from L2.1m. For more information -www.alpinehomesintl.com

have their own private roof garden complete with bar, infinity pool to relax in after missions, hot tub and electric-canopy-topped rooftop bedroom where you can siesta, sleep or do whatever with whoever, under the stars, in perfect privacy. Q has installed hidden keyhold security cameras that can be programmed to take and email pictures so you can track intruders or staff within 20 seconds of their entering the premises. A bespoke concierge service caters for all tastes, even yours. Prices start at L784,000, but these are the last properties being built at Quinta do Lago, so M thinks they’re a good investment. Membership of the exclusive golf club and play on its two championship courses is guaranteed. Pinheiros Altos as well as Vale da Lobo and Vilamoura are only a short DB5 drive away. SEYCHELLES Ian Fleming also stayed on Mahe in 1958, and featured the Indian Ocean island in For Your Eyes Only. The Four Seasons Private Residences, 28 individually designed villas on the southwest side of Mahe at Petite Anse, would give a special agent secluded luxurya quantum of solace, you might almost say. Perched up on the granite landscape above a sheltered bay, where you can clearly eyeball an approaching Eliott Carver-style stealth ship. Each property has spacious terraces and a large veranda that open onto wide decks, framing infinity pools. The bedroom suites should appeal to you, James- for extra privacy, they are set apart from the main living area and from each other. If you need some outdoor exercise, the resort hotel can arrange snorkeling, sailing and deep-sea fishing excursions, as well as fine dining.

THE KEYS During the war, your alter ego, Ian Fleming, liked the Casino in Estoril, but the best Portuguese courses are down in the Algarve. With its taut, angular design, the innovative Keys development at Quinta do Lago is just perfect for you. The villas at Key Lago each (Clockwise from far left) You’ll recognize this view as the setting for Scaramanga’s hideaway in The Man with the Golden Gun; Tiger Woods and Ernie Els are among the investors in Albany House, due to open in 2010; Les Chalets de Belvoir, less than an hour from Geneva airport, may well be the ultimate address in the French Alps

(Above) The Four Seasons Private Residences on the Indian Ocean Island of Mahe (featured in the film For Your Eyes Only) offer spacious terraces and total privacy (Left) With many of Portugal’s finest golf courses in the Algarve, The Keys at Quinto de Lago are especially appealing. wo of professional golf ’s marquee names were in New Providence over the weekend surveying the island’s newest golf course. While heavy construction equipment sculpted fairways in the background, pro golfer and course designer Ernie Els gave fellow competitor Justin Rose a tour of the first Els-designed golf course in The Bahamas, which is being constructed in the new luxury resort community of Albany. Inspecting each hole on the back nine of the 18hole course, Els and Rose discussed the placement of several greens and some tweaks

SWINGING THROUGH Els is currently contemplating to improve the playability of his course. “It’s great to see the holes now coming alive as the grass begins to grow in,” Els said. Playing through windswept dunes, grass hollows and traditional sand bunkers and highlighted by a number of stunning water features, Albany’s links-style course will

be particularly scenic. With fairways free of residential development, the course will also offer one of the purest golf experiences. Albany’s course is designed to be as playable as it is picturesque. Featuring four sets of tees measuring more than 7,400 yards from the back tees, the course will offer a range of shot values, includ-

ing five par fives and five par threes, with the remaining holes being par fours. Albany golf course designer Ernie Els and professional golfer Justin Rose inspected the completed holes on Albany’s golf course. Though Rose is not involved in the design of Albany’s course, he has a vested interest in its design facets. Like Els, Rose will be

I expect he’ll be playing plenty of recreational golf with friends here at Albany.” Less than a year from opening, Albany’s golf course is on track for completion in summer 2010. Approximately half of the 18 holes have already been grassed, and landscaping of the outer areas of the

course has been underway since August. Grassing on the front nine will commence shortly. A first-class golf teaching and practice facility, which includes a three-acre and one-acre short game area with two chipping greens and a putting green, will complement the golf course.

Links Magazine: Switching Off- September/October 2008

After playing in tournaments around the world, Els likes to get away at Albany House in the Bahamas.

COVER

Switching Off As many miles as he logs to play in tournaments around the world, the author still looks forward to unplugging and getting away for family vacations EVERYONE OBVIOUSLY HAS HIS OR HER PERSONAL VIEWS ON traveling and taking vacations. I once read a quote from Orson Welles, who I’m guessing wasn’t a fan, at least of flying. :There are only two emotions in a plane,” he said, “boredome and terror.” Trouble is, not flying certainly limits your travel options. I couldn’t have a more different view. I think I’m a born traveler, which is just as well. As a professional golfer, my commute to work is a little longer than most other jobs. I have been able to walk to work during tournaments at Wentworth, but that had been only two weeks a year for the BMW PGA Championship and the HSBC World Matchplay. In the other 50 weeks, I will clock probably around 70,000 miles. Admittedly, with a private jet it’s more doable than flying commercial, but that’s still a lot of time in the air. But as much as I travel, I still love to take family vacations. OK, there may be times when the perfect vacation is just shutting the gates to my house and switching off my cell phone for a couple of days. But other times it’s great to travel somewhere nice with the family. Like most other people, we have our favorite spots. We all love our house overlooking the ocean at Herold’s Bay down on the Western Cape in South Africa, and we always spend time there at the end of the year. But being South African I think it would be a stretch to call that a holiday destination. More like a home away from home really. The Bahamas is probably at the time of our list of other places to go. We often stay at the lovely Albany House in New Providence Island. It has a list of accolades as long as my driver and you only have to spend time them to see why. I’ve stayed in some beautiful places around the world and I would say this is my top five. You can get a little taste of Albany House by watching the most recent James Bond movie, Casino Royale, in which Daniel Craig as 007 checks into one of the resort’s beautiful oceanfront villas. It really is a special place. The best part now is that I have an added excuse to go, as we’re designing a golf course there, Albany Golf & Beach Club, a joint development with Tiger Woods and Joe Lewis’ Tavistock Group. Although Tiger is now in the design

business, Enrie Els Design has sole responsibiltiy for the golf course. It’s going to be incredible: Just think of the best of island life with world-class resort facilities and you’ll not be far off. It’s certainly one of the most exciting projects we have on our books. Anyway, back to the business of vacations. Another of my favorite locations is southern Europe. Ever since we met, my wife, Liezl, and I had wanted to spend some time island hopping in the Mediterranean. I had played a bit of golf in that part of the world during my early years on the European Tour, but I never had time to enjoy my time in the area. In the end, we wanted to wait until our children were old enough to enjoy that kind of trip with us. So finally in 2005 we chartered a boat and spent 10 days cruising with friends around the Med. We visited Capri, the Amalfi coast-line, spent a day at Pompeii and saw all the other amazing locations in the area. The scenery combined with great food, family and friends made for a fantastic trip. There’s something about being on a boat, away from the crowds, that is incredibly relaxing. It’s just so peaceful. and I don’t care what your job is, we all need to switch off from time to time. That’s what vacations are all about. Even Orson Welles surely would have had to agree with that!
