It is an incredible feeling to know that so many are doing their part to support the academic dreams of young Bahamians.

A Message From The Director The cost of a college education should never be a barrier to a student’s future. But in The Bahamas, many young adults don’t have the financial resources to access academic institutions that offer quality education and training. It is my honor to introduce you to the Albany Scholars Program, a scholarship foundation dedicated to helping high-achieving Bahamian youngsters gain access to educational establishments that intellectually challenge them and ultimately prepare them for productive careers in a wide range of industries. Coming from a large single-parent home, I know firsthand how difficult it can be for Bahamian parents to fund their children’s academic aspirations. At a time when Bahamian families struggle through extremely challenging economic times, the Albany Scholars Program exists to ensure that a generation of young adults who have worked hard to fulfill their academic hopes and dreams will have the opportunity to do so. Albany’s inaugural scholarship offering was met with such enthusiasm and support from New Providence’s corporate sector that a handful of businesses in the community made generous contributions to expand the program. It is an incredible feeling to know that so many are doing their part to support the academic dreams of young Bahamians. We invite you to learn more about the Albany Scholars Program and become part of this lasting legacy. Sincerely, Rochelle Newbold Albany Scholars Program, Director

Carlos Palacious Hometown: Nassau, Bahamas Area of study: Coastal Engineering School: University of Florida Date of birth: Feb. 16, 1987 Carlos Palacious graduated as salutatorian, head boy and Gentleman of the Year from St. Anne’s School. He completed his diploma in engineering at St. Mary’s University and earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Dalhousie University. After interning at various civil, geotechnical and coastal engineering firms in both The Bahamas and the United States, Carlos gained a wide range of experience in drafting, design and industry standard software. A passion for coastal development and restoration led him to pursue a master’s degree in coastal engineering at the University of Florida in September 2009. Registered as an engineer-in-training in Florida and Nova Scotia, Carlos plans to become fully certified as a professional engineer in both the United States and Canada.

“This scholarship has provided the financial assistance I need to obtain the knowledge, training and resources that we desperately need in The Bahamas to help protect, manage and inevitably restore as much of our coastal ecosystem as possible. This opportunity has allowed me to further my understanding of coastal processes so I can introduce more sustainable alternatives to our current methods of coastal armoring, beach management and land reclamation.”
