an extraordinary opportunity In an extraordinary opportunity offered through Sotheby’s New York, Isleworth is pleased to host an exhibition of modern sculpture profoundly unique in its variety, quantity and unusual location. The Showcase of Modern Masters exhibition will be at Isleworth through Spring 2005. It consists of bronze, aluminum, steel and resin sculptures that will grace the exquisite grounds of Isleworth and surround its championship golf course. Two special bronze sculptures created by celebrated Colombian artist, Fernando Botero, make their world debut in this remarkable collection. In addition to the seven sculptures by Fernando Botero, this showcase includes masterpieces by Niki de Saint Phalle, Barry Flanagan, Robert Indiana, Philip Jackson, Aristide Maillol, Henry Moore, Arnaldo Pomodoro and several others in a collection that is double the size of the previous year. Rarely are works of this magnitude, diversity and value brought together for such an exhibition. The artists’ subjects range from human and animal figures to abstract and geometric forms. Colorful and jubilant, stark and austere: these momentous works of art are brought to life in the lush gardens and dramatic environment of Isleworth. Isleworth offers this collection to its members and residents for their enjoyment and appreciation. Viewings for non-members can be arranged by appointment only. To learn more about the magnificent works on display, contact Stephane Cosman Connery at Sotheby’s New York: 212-606-7441.

“There is a major connection between painting and sculpture. The painting and sculpture of Giacometti have the same aesthetic relationship. It is the same. In Matisse, there is a very tight relationship. The same is true of Picasso and Michelangelo. You cannot take one position as a sculptor and a completely different one as a painter. In my case, the sculptures are obviously a continuation of my paintings.” -Botero

“I would call it attitude, you know, the way that you can make something almost talk by the way the neck is bent, or the attitude of the head; you can actually make these sculptures talk, they say something according to the exact balance, whereas if they’re absolutely straight ... well, I suppose that’s saying something, too.” -Chadwick

“Playful, fresh, frolicsome, vigorous, soaring, creative, different, colorful, uninhibited, innovative, energizing, spontaneous, imaginative, delightful, benevolent, stimulating, powerful - all of these adjectives have been used in an attempt to describe what cannot be put into words, the buoyant and vast spirit expressed in the art of Niki de Saint Phalle.” - an excerpt from NIKI DE SAINT PHALLE - Insider/Outsider World Inspired Art by Martha W. Longenecker

“[Hares]...are evocative of a human situation or activity. These beasts are always doing something...and on a practical level, if you consider what conveys situation and meaning and feeling in a human figure, the range of expression is in fact far more limited than the device of investing an animal - a hare especially - with the expressive attributes of a human being. The ears, for instance, are really able to convey far more than a squint in an eye of a figure.” -Flanagan

“One must be entirely sensitive to the structure of the material that one is handling. One must yield to it in tiny details of execution, perhaps the handling of the surface or grain, and one must master it as a whole” -Hepworth

“My sculptures are essentially an impressionistic rendering of the figure. ... [The] variation of the textural surface is deliberately done to draw the viewer’s eye to the expressive parts of the sculpture – the parts that instill the character and essence of the figure – the parts that express the body language.” -Jackson

LIPCHITZ benediction ll

JACQUES LIPCHITZ • 1891 - 1973 Bronze, 56.6” H Conceived in 1943, Cast in 1945

“My interest in sculpture really began when I was nineteen. I was a beginning art student at the Escola D’art (Barcelona). Fransisco Gall was a remarkable teacher, and he gave me an exercise so that I would learn to ‘see’ form. He blindfolded, and placed objects in my hands, then asked me to draw the object without having seen them. So my interest in sculpture actually dates from that time...” -Miró

“Making a sculpture in two pieces means that, as you walk around it, one form gets in front of the other in ways you cannot foresee, and you get a more surprising number of different views than when looking at a monolithic piece.” -Moore
