F O OLD FORT BAY

NEW PROVIDENCE ISLAND THE BAHAMAS

Old Fort The Old Fort has captured the imagination of generations of visitors, residents and locals. People of all ages from all parts of the world who have somehow fallen upon the Old Fort tell the same story. It goes something like this:

A magical long-forgotten building "I walked up from the beach, and under an enormous tree there was a magical long-forgotten building, part house, part fortress. There were cannons all around, and the walls were covered with beautiful, peeling and tattered murals. It was surrounded by overgrown groves of palms and flaming poinciana trees. I couldn't believe my discovery and wanted to know what I had found."

What they had found was all that it appeared. It was part house and part fortress. It was part of the military history of the 18th century and the social history of the 20th. It is and was all of these things and now, having been dusted off and refurbished, it is the cornerstone of Old Fort Bay, where residents from all generations and from all parts of the world gather and create their own history.

Old Fort Then The Old Fort started its life as a real fort. It was built by the British sometime in the 1700s during a particularly lawless moment in colonial history when the Crown spent enormous time and energy keeping pirates, privateers and buccaneers under control in this part of the world. The building had a century or so of use as a plantation house during the 1800s when sisal was grown all around it. In the 1920s the glamour began when American James Cox Brady won the property in a card game, dying shortly thereafter. His widow remarried a worldly character with the unusual name of Suydam Cutting, and the house began a new and vibrant phase.

What was old is new again The Cuttings were famous world travelers. Mrs. Cutting was the first Western woman to visit Tibet, and she returned with a pair of lhaso apsos that the Dalai Lama had given her.The Old Fort in the ‘20s and ‘30s was the architectural beneficiary of these great adventures. There are tiles from Portugal and Holland and ornamental metalwork and lanterns from Spain. The Cuttings were known for entertaining under giant Tibetan tents with servants in Indian madras uniforms. After Mr. Cutting's death in the early 1970s, the house was shuttered, and it was in the ensuing years that it took on its forgotten state. In 2002 restoration began, and after one year the Old Fort was completely reborn and given a wonderful modern relevance. The magical flourishes that the Cuttings brought from the four corners of the globe are now enjoyed and celebrated by members and residents of Old Fort who come to spend time with their friends and families in this timeless place.

Old Fort Now With the magical Old Fort restored and sitting on the ridge above the prettiest beach in New Providence, the planners had a great place to start.

An extraordinary waterfront community They were led by Teofilo Victoria, a professor of architecture at the University of Miami, and the former Town Architect at Seaside in the Florida panhandle. The conclusion was that a variety of lot sizes and scale would be necessary, landscaping and street lighting would be critical, and all efforts would be governed by strict architectural codes. The architectural code carefully ensures excellence without prescribing a particular style. In other words, houses with their stylistic roots in the Mediterranean Revival co-exist beautifully with houses influenced firmly in the traditional Caribbean vernacular. The result is harmonious. Landscaping plays another very important part. Landscaping plans are reviewed, and owners are encouraged to plant trees with an eye to the future. Great communities and the great boulevards of the world are lined with trees, and the planners of Old Fort are committed to an ongoing planting program. This ensures a long-term continuum of beautiful tree-lined streets and houses with lush tropical gardens. What was clear was that people wanted to live in an old-fashioned way and be able to enjoy an outdoor, island life. They wanted to walk their dogs in safety, drive their golf carts to visit with their neighbors and keep their boats secure on docks behind their homes.

Old Fort Bay Club The marvellously romantic history of the Old Fort is evident to members from the minute they turn the corner onto the lushly landscaped lane that leads to the Club. Giant, flaming poinciana trees line the drive and a 19th-century cannon greets visitors on the front lawn. The building has the majesty of the fort it once was and the spirit of conviviality and informality of the home that the Cutting family created in the 1920s. Nowadays, children climb on the many cannons and play pirates amid the wonderful cliffs and caves. Members arrive early to walk the pristine beach and to read the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times, which are delivered daily at the crack of dawn. They enjoy espresso made the "right" way and the freshest, most modern lunch and dinner menus on the island.

Something private and magical Chef John Knowles insisted that the Club create a farm to produce the greens, herbs and fresh vegetables it would need. It was done and the collateral result is that the homeowners now avail themselves from the nearby farm so they too can have organic produce in their own fridges. The Club has successfully become the centerpiece of this wonderful community.
