BRIEF ONE //

TAXONOMY

RATIONALE

Being asked to provide a Taxonomy in just under two months seemed easy on initial briefing but when it came down to it, coming up with a collection that had a connection to you and wasn’t generic proved difficult. I chose images of European scooters, as I believed it would be unique within my group and I really wanted to channel my travels into this project. My aim was to take on the style of Todd McLellen, a wonderfully unique artist who creates his work by dissembling objects and photographing them. I knew my ideas were a little far fetched on a student budget but with a little guidance, I found myself purchasing my first scooter - to take to pieces! The journey of purchasing, dissembling, positioning, photographing and re-assembling was a lengthy (and cold!) process but I believe I achieved my goals to a standard I was content with. I started this brief with very few ideas on what my final outcome would be and this helped to really push my boundaries creatively. I came away with some great imagery for a booklet I designed influenced by the style of the famous Haynes Manuals. I wanted to keep the overall layout and colour scheme simple and let the photos do the talking. This brief made me realize that if I set goals, even those a little out of reach, they can be achieved with a lot of time and hard work.

BRIEF TWO //

DATA VISUALISATION

RATIONALE

I was really looking forward to starting this brief as it enabled me to wander into the world of Data Visualisation, something I’ve wanted to do for quite some time. I followed the protocol of coming up with initial proposal ideas and after struggling for some time with what it actually was we were required to do (I had a 9-point list which I later learnt were not what they were looking for) and submitting a draft copy, I asked for a little guidance and stumbled upon my final chosen proposal to collect and present the data for a baking company I work for. It’s personal and a huge part of my life making it a lot easier for me to create visuals for. The Red Spotty Elephant is a young, fresh and vibrant bakery that targets all ages with a twist and I wanted to really capture that in the visuals. I researched into various data artists to really develop an idea of what I wanted my style to be and settled upon an Art & Science Journal on a blog called We Feel Fine. Their colourful, vibrant and unusual style really caught my attention so I aimed to channel that into my prototypes. This was a particularly hard brief in that we didn’t really have a ‘final outcome’ from our research therefore our creativity was pushed in what we finally produced. I am happy with what I made and feel it reflects the business well, I would love to continue with this and create visuals for various areas of the company.

BRIEF THREE //

D&AD COMPETITION

RATIONALE

The opportunity to take part in such a well-established competition was an exciting time for us. Being given the option to decide on our own brief really worked well in our favor as it made us work harder for a better outcome. After some deliberation I settled upon the DCM Ident brief on the D&AD website. It’s not something I would normally pick which is exactly why I chose it, it will push my boundaries as a designer and help further my talents. Georgia Stubbs and myself decided (and with Rob’s permission) that in order for us to excel in this brief we would work together, combining both of our talents to aim for a great final product. We did emotional research to gain knowledge of which emotion we required and finally chose joy. We drafted a storyboard, looked into films for content and camera shot ideas and eventually began the filming process. Using a tripod and a DSLR, our earliest wake up call was 4.30am for a sunrise – thankfully it was one of our best clips! We had a great range of content that helped set us up well for composing our ident. Our soundtrack was Explosion in the Sky by Your Hand In Mine, which was too long therefore we used music editing software and cut it down to 25 seconds and added a fade in/fade out affect. Overall, we were extremely happy with all aspects of our ident and are proud of ourselves for producing something like this from scratch.
