City Blues The visual diary of an eavesdropper
by Tay Tutes
When I travel, I use my sketchbook as my journal, so I can remember where I’ve been.
When I see something interesting, I draw it. For example, my friend showed us how to shoot guns. I was more interested in drawing them than anything else.
I put my pen down and let the drawing sprawl from there. Sometimes, I’ll add overheard commentary.
I work in a coffee shop. Eavesdropping on conversations comes with the gig.
One of my favorite places in St. Louis is the Soulard Farmer’s Market. It’s best in the spring and summer time. You can find fresh pastries and produce, hand made goods, and live music. It’s a great place to people watch.
Sometimes when I travel, I buy and dedicate a sketchbook for that trip.
My drawings are an attempt to reconcile The Truth with My Truth. I draw what I see, as accurate to life as it needs to be.
