Welcome to our fabulous Cantor’s concert featuring the world famous Zamir Chorale, as we celebrate Israel’s 75th year.
Israel affects us all in different ways, profound ways. Rabbi Sidney Greenberg summarized those feelings in these words:
For the Jew, Israel is a state of mind
It is not only a piece of geography
It is history
It is theology
It is Jewish tears and Jewish triumphs
It is Jewish anguish and Jewish ecstasy
It is childhood legends and biblical verses
It is the direction that we pray and the subject of our prayers
It is exile and homecoming
It is a burning Temple and a new flag at the United Nations
It is the 9th of Av and the 5th of Iyar
It is a people restored and hope reborn
What better way to celebrate Israel than with our own Cantor, Katie Kaplan, joining Matthew Lazar and not one but two Zamir groups in song, sprinkling in some home-grown talent. Both Zamir and Cantor Katie have made the spirit of Israel come alive, so it is most fitting that tonight their voices will blend together.
As we celebrate, we honor Mia and Lonny Weinstein have dedicated themselves to bringing our congregation to even greater heights. Thank you to them for all they have done, and a special shout-out to Emily and Eddie as well.
Mazal tov – and enjoy the concert!
Rabbi Joshua HammermanZamir Chorale and Zamir Noded: Celebrating Israel at 75
Dear Congregation,
I am so excited to be welcoming The Zamir Chorale and Zamir Noded ensembles under the direction of Maestro Mati Lazar, for my 2023 Cantor’s Concert in a program honoring Israel at 75 years. The Zamir Chorale is the leading voice of the Jewish choral movement and sets the standard for Jewish choirs in North America. Zamir Noded was established to provide a high-level musical opportunity for young adults to sing in a Jewish choir with like-minded peers.
Choral singing has been part of my life ever since I took my first breath. Throughout my early years growing up in Vermont, I sang in every choir within a drivable radius and participated in the District, All-State, and All New England choirs. One type of choral music, however, was less accessible in Vermont at that time, and that was Jewish choral music. I had heard of the world famous Zamir Chorale, but never had the opportunity to be part of their HaZamir Program for teens or to participate as an adult. I listened to their music, watched videos of friends and family performing and always yearned to be on the inside with them, living, breathing, and singing Jewish choral music together with collective breath and collective soul.
Flash forward to the present, in which I have the opportunity to not only sing with Zamir Chorale, but share the power, majesty, and beauty of Jewish Choral music with all of you and I’m over the moon. Tie in the fact that we will be honoring the contributions of Mia and Lonny Weinstein and we are certain to have a meaningful night filled with divine music and community celebration. It is an honor and dream fulfilled to be hosting these dynamic groups and sharing Jewish choral music with the Stamford Jewish community. I am grateful to our TBE teens and Hazzan Emeritus Sidney Rabinowitz, who will be joining me to sing with the Zamir ensembles as well. L’dor Vador, from generation to generation may we enjoy the beauty of Jewish choral music, voices weaving stories from the past into the future, for many years to come.
