Dear Congregation,
When the pace of life and the circumstances of the world feel more than we can bear, music anchors us to our roots, our families, our Judaism, and our hearts. One of the things that helps me find my center during a challenging time is listening to show tunes and the songs I grew up singing with my family. For this year’s Cantor’s Concert, I am thrilled to be bringing you a program of classic songs from the JewishAmerican Songbookfeaturing music of George and Ira Gershwin, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, Irving Berlin and more. These songs light up my face with a smile and make me tap my toe to the music, and I hope they will do the same for you.
Joining me for this concert is Cantor Micah Morgovsky of Temple Sinai just down the road along with Cantor Shimon Smith from Romemu in Manhattan. Each of these cantors brings a dynamic presence coupled with a lovely voice and genuine good time. I have had so much fun performing with each of them in the past and am excited for you to experience their shining light and engaging performances with me here at Temple Beth El. And of course, we will also be joined by outstanding musicians, Chris Coogan, Koby Hayon, Nadav SnirAelniker, Peter Slavov, and Nir Naaman for this enchanted evening of song.
All of the songs we will be sharing led me to fall in love with Broadway, Jewish composers, and The American Songbook. They set the tone and the foundation for all that has followed and ultimately resonated in my soul. I’m sure they will bring up memories and recollections for each of you as well. It is fitting that we are honoring Carl and Dana Weinberg, who have been so important at the foundational level, to our Temple Beth El community and who have given so much over the years to ensure its continued success.
With deep respect and gratitude, I thank the Mann Family for their gift of support to put together this concert, the entire TBE Board, TBE staff, and the Cantor’s Concert Committee. So, get ready to tap your toes and be serenaded with an evening of show tunes and songs that will take you to your core and bring you back home.
