Dear Beth El Family, It has been an incredible year. It’s been a real pleasure working with Rabbi Hammerman, Lisa Gittelman Udi, Steven Lander, Sylvan Pomerantz, the Board of Trustees and everyone in the office – and a great pleasure serving this wonderful community. Thank you for inviting me to be part of the Beth El Family. I am looking forward to a future filled with community, prayer, music, joy, good health, mutual partnership and friendships. I thank you all for making my family and me feel welcomed this year, for supporting TBE and especially our music program. I am looking forward to building more and more connections, to continue getting to know you, and to mutually grow and learn from each other. Many blessings.

June 14, 2015 I am delighted to welcome you to our Cantor’s Concert, and to take part in our official welcome to Cantor Fishman, Zarin and Yair (and, of course, Pilpil the dog) to TBE. It is hard to believe that Cantor Fishman and her family have been with us only 10 months, but in that brief space of time she has accomplished amazing things. Our services are pulsating with energy, our B’nai Mitzvah students are smiling, people of all ages are humming and music can be heard everywhere in our building. It is extraordinary how quickly our entire community has embraced this Cantor and this family. We’ve come to understand what noted journalist David Suissa wrote about her a couple of years ago: “I know “spirituality” is a nebulous term, so I’ll say it more clearly: I lost myself. I stopped thinking and started feeling. It helped that every time I looked up at Cantor Fishman, she also looked lost - lost in her prayers, her melodies and the moment. She was receiving from God as much as she was giving to us.” There are many facets to TBE’s mission, but there can be no doubt that inspirational, passionate prayer is right at the top. I have been fortunate to have shared our pulpit with some of the world’s most gifted cantors. We are so lucky this year to have brought someone here who can take us even higher. I am also appreciative of all of you, our congregants and other supporters, who have recognized with your generosity and commitment the importance of sustaining our mission, and in particular, our music. As the 19th century poet Heinrich Heine wrote, “Where words leave off, music begins.” L’shalom,
Rabbi Joshua Hammerman
