Celebrating Jewish Music

A Cantor’s Concert Honoring Eileen H. Rosner June 2, 2013 Temple Beth El 350 Roxbury Road Stamford, CT 06902

OUR HONOREE Eileen H. rosner Eileen - Immediate Past President of Temple Beth El, presently serves on the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees and has chaired or served on numerous boards and committees. Eileen currently co-chairs the Ritual Committee, chairs the 2013 Cantor’s Concert, and serves on the Sisterhood Board, Garden Committee, High Holy Days Committee, Board of Education, and the Fund Raising Committee. Following in her father’s footsteps, she opens the doors and organizes the daily morning minyan. Previously, she had chaired or served on TBE personnel search committees, JCC/TBE preschool task force, congregational Shabbatons, strategic planning committees, dinner dances, the installation of Rabbi Joshua Hammerman, the farewell to Hazzan Sidney Rabinowitz and the 90th anniversary of TBE. She is a regular visitor to Shorashim (TBE’s Early Childhood Center) where many of the children call her “Aunt Eileen.” Years ago, Eileen set up and operated the Temple’s library. She also taught in our Religious School. Eileen maintains the yahrtzeit data base and, every week, she lights the bulbs on the memorial plaques of those for whom a yahrtzeit is being observed. She is a recipient of the Rose Rosner Award, given by Sisterhood, in recognition of Eileen’s mother’s many years of volunteering for Temple Beth El and Sisterhood. In the community Eileen is currently the President of the Friends of The Ferguson Library, and serves on the executive committees or boards of Jewish Historical Society of Fairfield County, Stamford Historical Society, Beth El Cemetery Association, and The Ballet School of Stamford. She also enjoys singing with the New World Chorus. In 2011, she was honored by the Volunteer Center of Stamford as the Outstanding Senior Volunteer and on April 7, 2013 by The Ballet School of Stamford for her dedication to their students and the Stamford community.

It is nearly impossible to encapsulate everything Eileen Rosner does for TBE and for our community. The best way to put it: The more thankless the task, the more likely it is that Eileen is the one who is doing it. Who pastes the bookplates into all the Siddurim? Eileen. Who organizes all the High Holidays honors? Eileen. Who opens up in the morning and often locks up at night? Who is Steve when Steve is not here and who handles our maintenance responsibilities on holidays when the maintenance men are off? Who does absolutely everything at the cemetery? You guessed it. If this is what retirement is like, it seems an awful lot like work. Except that for Eileen, this job, like her real work in the classroom, is a labor of love. If “no man is an island,” then we can safely add, no woman is an Eileen. Actually, there is one woman who reminds me of Eileen. She lived in Talmudic times and her name was Bruriah. She was the Yentl of her day, a female scholar in a man’s world. Bruriah was very involved in the halachic discussions of her time, and even challenged her father, a noted rabbi, on a matter of ritual purity. She was also diplomatic. In one instance, Rabbi Joshua praises her intervention in a debate between Rabbi Tarfon and the sages, saying, “Bruriah has spoken correctly.” And Bruriah was also known for her sharp wit and occasionally caustic jibes. Just like Eileen. But in the end, Bruriah was, according to Midrash, considered by her husband Rabbi Meir to be the perfect embodiment of the book of Proverbs’ “Woman of Valor.” Eileen is our Woman of Valor. She has walked dutifully and lovingly in the footsteps of both her parents, and in doing so she has honored us all. But as much as we miss Frank and Rose, we know that Eileen has also carved out her own niche in TBE’s annals. While people will always remember Frank’s understated ushering technique, now a generation of B’nai Mitzvah families will recall Eileen’s friendly yet frantic smile as she finds relatives to send up to the bima for their aliyot. Generations of TBE’ers will recall Eileen as the person behind all the planning for Shabbatons, the inspiration for the renewal of our sanctuary, and the doting friend to a certain rabbi’s and cantor’s kids that I know. For the Hammerman children, Eileen has been a welcome presence at every birthday party and graduation (even while tolerating the dogs). So the question arises: What has Eileen NOT done? The answer: Allow us to thank her, and her alone, in this public manner. Eileen – for everything – THANK YOU! Love, Rabbi Joshua Hammerman, Mara, Ethan and Dan

Jewish musical traditions from around the world reflect the rich cultural exchange that has unfolded over the centuries between Jewish communities and their host cultures. At this year’s Cantor’s Concert we will have an opportunity to experience some of the most exciting songs from the Jewish liturgical and secular repertoire, in a variety of Jewish languages, as my cantorial colleagues from Stamford, Greenwich, Fairfield County and Westport join me in an evening of Jewish music from around the world. Also performing will be Elliot Weiss, Doris Weiss, and the New World Chorus, directed by Beth Styles, all of whom have become cherished members of our Beth El community through their inspiring musical contributions to our services and events over the years. Music is such an integral part of our spiritual experience at Beth El. This concert promises to educate, entertain and elevate our community as we journey together through the depth and wealth of the Jewish musical experience. This evening we honor a very important person in our community. I know that I speak on behalf of all of the staff when I say that we would not be able to function in the same way without Eileen’s loving support and presence. Her commitment to Temple Beth El is nothing short of Tefillah (prayer) in action. Anyone who knows Eileen has a first-hand opportunity to see embodied in a person, the essence of selfless love and true devotion. We are all so grateful that Eileen is part of our lives in such a meaningful way and, knowing how important music is to her, we are delighted to dedicate tonight’s program of Jewish music to her in recognition of all the amazing ways in which she makes Beth El a sweeter, more caring place. B’Shalom, Cantor George Mordecai

Teaching minds. Reaching hearts.

We congratulate Eileen Rosner for being honored by Temple Beth-El at its 2013 Cantor’s Concert, “Celebrating Jewish Music.” Eileen has done so much for the Temple, as President and leader of numerous synagogue committees. She honors the memory of her father, Frank Rosner, z’l, by organizing the daily minyan. Beyond Temple Beth-El, however, Eileen is the consummate civic-minded leader, and numerous other organizations benefit from her energy and enthusiasm. She serves as president of the Friends of The Ferguson Library, and has actively supported the Jewish Historical Society and the Ballet School of Stamford for many years. A hearty Mazal Tov to our good friend Eileen on this well deserved honor! Best wishes to Temple Beth-El for a successful event!
