I am delighted to welcome you to our installation of Katie Kaplan as Cantor of Temple Beth El. I am particularly overjoyed, having known Cantor Kaplan for two decades, having seen her remarkable musical and teaching skills up close (She even gave my son voice lessons.) and having come to appreciate her deep spiritual gifts. And to be able to celebrate this landmark moment with two of the most distinguished occupants of TBE’s cantorial chair, Hazzan Sidney Rabinowitz and Cantor Deborah Jacobson, along with Rabbi Hazzan Luis Cattan, makes this celebration even more complete. While this is moment marks a new beginning, Cantor Kaplan has actually been serving us for a number of years, first as a congregant, then as guest cantor and music teacher and finally as our chosen cantor, who was able, somehow, to achieve celestial musical heights despite the challenges of the Covid years. But now, as we can begin to find our way back to more in-person settings (while still striving for excellence online), we can finally mark this sacred transition. We are truly fortunate to have Cantor Kaplan as our representative in prayer. Her voice brings comfort, creativity, and inspiration, and her words and music combine in a manner that can reenergize Jewish life, in our community and well beyond. My family joins me in wishing mazal tov to Cantor Kaplan, along with her family, as we embark on this leg of this long and winding road together.

The Long and Winding Road, A Cantor’s Concert and Installation June 2, 2022 Dear Congregation, A journey begins and sometimes we can travel for quite a while before we realize in which direction we are actually moving. In fact, the journey of a lifetime is one that doesn’t even have a particular final destination, but rather many different reflection points along the way. We resist and surrender in cyclical phases and I have come to discover that as much as we think we are shaping the road we travel, we are also being shaped by the road. As we begin to turn the corner through the COVID pandemic, I am completing two years serving in the role of Cantor at Temple Beth El. I find it the perfect time to musically reflect on “The Long and Winding Road” that led me through the doors and onto the bimah of Temple Beth El. This Cantor’s Concert will take the audience on an eclectic ride of musical styles and influences along the road of my life from childhood through the present. From campfire, to opera, jazz, rock, pop, folk, and my own compositions, this concert will share a taste of everything. As part of the concert and ceremony, I will be joined by Cantor Deborah Jacobson who is my dear friend, former Cantor at TBE, and one of my first inspirations to journey in the direction of the cantorate. Also joining us in song and ceremony will be Rabbi Hazzan Luis Cattan, my mentor, friend, Cantor of The Conservative Synagogue of Westport, and current President of the Cantors Assembly. Together, we will sing and celebrate the mutual commitment between Cantor and Congregation as I am officially and ceremoniously installed at Temple Beth El. L’dor vador, from generation to generation, is a phrase that holds significant meaning to me. I am grateful to all those before me on whose shoulders I have been blessed to stand. With deep respect and gratitude, I thank the Mann Family for their gift of support to put together this concert, the entire TBE Board, TBE staff, and the Cantor’s Concert Committee for their support. This congregation has held me up and believed in me for over a decade as I’ve grown into my role, and for the privilege of guiding you now, I offer my heartfelt thanks. Becoming a Cantor has meant many things to me over the years, but none stand out as much as the opportunity to be a part of the deep joys and sorrows of all of your lives. I am honored to be here for you and humbled to be your Cantor. With Sincere Gratitude and Thanks,
Cantor Katie Kaplan
