From the university president ... Stony Brook University is again pleased to share with the community all the wide variety of programs and events we offer that may be of interest to our neighbors. In addition to our mission to educate the best and brightest students and to provide cutting-edge health and dental care, we continue to develop innovative programs and services to respond to the needs of the Long Island community. Major initiatives this year have also focused on diversity and gender equality. It is our hope that the strides forward we have taken as a University in these important areas will have a positive impact on you as well. This has been an exciting year for our University. This past March our basketball team made school history with their first America East Championship and first trip to the Big Dance, the NCAA tournament. It was wonderful seeing so many of our friends and neighbors come out in support of our team. Then in April we launched our new brand initiative, Far Beyond, which will better help us tell the incredible stories of our students, faculty and staff who are making a difference through their work. And most recently, we were ranked among the top one percent in the world, ranking #154 among more than 25,000 degree-granting institutions of higher education worldwide, according to the Center for World University Rankings. The excitement will continue this fall as we have a wide range of fascinat-
When my husband and I moved to Long Island, we wanted a university community for its academic, cultural and worldly aspects. We wanted a top medical community, a village with a sense of its own history and pride in its roots, and a good school district. We also wanted a beautiful place with great recreational activities, near the water. We found such a location and have lived here going on five decades. It has seldom disappointed, in part because of the presence of Stony Brook University. And even as we raised our family here and grew our careers, so did SBU grow in prestige and in what it offers the community. To help you, our readers, see what is available on campus and off, we have partnered with the university to bring you a comprehensive resource guide to their events and also, on

LaValle Stadium to cheer on our football, soccer and lacrosse teams. We hope to see you for all the family fun at our annual Wolfstock event on October 15, celebrating our homecoming football game versus the Rhode Island Rams. This edition of “Bridges” contains a small sampling of the many things that make Stony Brook University so special. Please join us at one of our numerous events or simply take the time to walk around and enjoy the beauty of our campus. Our neighbors are always welcome.

ing events planned to start off our 59th academic year, such as a very special Presidential Lecture on September 12 at the Staller Center. I am proud to be welcoming Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director of UN Women, who will join me for a discussion on the UN’s HeForShe solidarity movement for gender equality. Stony Brook joined the HeForShe movement last year as an IMPACT 10x10x10 champion and is now one of only 10 universities around the world committed to taking bold game-changing action to achieve gender equality within and beyond their institutions. This lecture is only the first of many events we will be participating in this year to support gender equality. Stony Brook University is a center of academic excellence and a vital resource for Long Island. It is also the premier destination in Suffolk for arts and entertainment. The Staller Center for the Arts offers the best in music, theater, dance, cinema and comedy. This fall, Staller welcomes comedian Janeane Garofalo for two shows in November and hosts the prestigious Emerson String Quartet in December and January. The Charles B. Wang Center is another cultural showplace, featuring unique Asian and Asian-American exhibits, lectures and performances. Art is always on display in the Wang Center lobbies, the Simons Center, and in the Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery in the Staller Center

This is the fourth year of our publication, which concentrates on the west or main campus, and describes its palette of rich offerings and schedules, including sports, lectures and performances to which the public is enthusiastically invited. “Bridges” also presents the outstanding local business community on the university’s doorstep. In February, at the start of the second academic semester, we will again publish a similarly comprehensive overview of the east campus. Enjoying the Day on the Stony Brook Campus
In addition to being a center of education and research, the Stony Brook campus is a wonderful place for members of our community to relax, have fun or be entertained. For a short respite from the hustle and bustle, take a walk through the Ashley Schiff Park Preserve, next to Roth Pond. It’s a 26-acre island of tranquility filled with trees and plants in their natural environment. Nature lovers will also enjoy a guided tour of the Life Sciences Greenhouse, situated on a quarter acre and housing breathtakingly beautiful plants and flowers from all over the world — more than 65 botanical families in all. Call (631) 632-8524 for more information. More active visitors may want to take a ride on the Paul Simons Memorial Bike Path. The six-mile-long bike lane provides students, faculty, staff and visitors with a safe, sustainable alternative way to travel around the University and improve their fitness and aerobic health. For Broadway-style shows, concerts, dance and films, the Staller Center is your ticket to first-class entertainment. For more exotic fare, the Charles B. Wang Center dazzles visitors

Art Flourishes Across SBU
Throughout the campuses of Stony Brook University, art is everywhere. Paintings, sculptures, photographs and multimedia installations are featured in the University’s many galleries. The community is always welcome. A great way to take in all the art is to come out for the campus-wide Art Crawl, a guided tours of various galleries at Stony Brook University. Art Crawls will take place on Wednesday, September 28, from 3 pm to 5 pm (meet at the Simons Center Art Gallery) and Tuesday, November 15, from 3 pm to 5 pm (at Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery, Staller Center).
Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery at Staller The Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery, located in the Staller Center for the Arts, has been presenting dynamic professional and student exhibitions since 1975. Under the direction of Karen Levitov, the gallery is continuing to bring new artists to Stony Brook. Gallery hours during the exhibitions are Tuesday to Friday, 12 pm to 4 pm; Saturday, 7 pm to 9 pm. Also open one hour before and during intermission of most Staller Center for the Arts performances.

The Charles B. Wang Center Art is a daily part of life at the Charles B. Wang Center. For details on the many offerings at the Center, please see the story “2016 Wang Center Cultural Offerings” in this issue.
Photo by Traven Rice The Guerrilla Girls will give a talk at the Zuccaire Gallery on Thursday, October 13. Free and open to all.
Art Inspired by Science: The Simons Gallery The art gallery in the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics is open to the public Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm. It features installations from artists from all over the world. For more information on the next gallery show or to be added to the Center’s mailing list visit www. scgp.stonybrook.edu. This September, the Simons Center Gallery presents the exhibit Resound from Thursday, September 8, through Friday, October 28. The exhibition, inspired by the recent scientific discovery of gravitational waves in space, will feature the work of six internationally renowned artists: Memo Akten, Sougwen Chung, Seth Cluett, Yoon Chung Han, Carsten Nicolai and Jess Rowland. The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, or LIGO, which is operated by Caltech and MIT with partner institutions worldwide, announced earlier this year in February that a gravitational wave sound had been detected emanating from the collision and merger
of two black holes a billion light years away. Thus, gravitational waves were detected and recorded one hundred years after Albert Einstein’s prediction of ripples in the fabric of space-time in his Theory of Relativity. Gravitational waves are ripples in the curvature of spacetime that propagate as waves traveling outward from their source. The Simons Center features art not just in the gallery, but all around the building, inside and out. Outside the entrance to the Center is the Umbilic Torus, a sculpture by artist Helaman Ferguson, which represents a fusion of mathematics and art. Inside the lobby, one wall features the work of Toby Buonagurio, professor of art at Stony Brook University. The artwork is titled “Earth, Air, Fire, Water” and is composed of 11 enormous, unique, hand-made, glazed and lustered sculptural relief ceramic butterflies. Also on display in the Center’s lobby is the “Iconic Wall.” The wall was engraved in limestone with key mathematical equations and diagrams.
(Image courtesy of the artist and Ibid Gallery, Los Angeles, CA.) This work by Carsten Nicolai, Chroma wellenform (Scan 3), will be on display at the Simons Art Gallery this fall. Nicolai is one of the only contemporary artists working simultaneously in visual and sonic media.

Saturday, November 12, 8 pm CRISTINA PATO Recital Hall, $38
Newly-married Broadway veterans Jarrod Spector and Kelli Barrett are often asked, What’s it like to be married to a fellow artist?’ Bringing to life the greatest songs birthed from the greatest marriages, the two attempt to answer the question with great songs. Audiences can expect to hear such classics as Johnny Cash and June Carter’s “Going to Jackson” and Sonny & Cher’s “The Beat Goes On.”
Although she entered the jazz world as a pianist, Cristina Pato came to prominence after she picked up an instrument from her childhood in Spain: the bagpipe. Specifically the Gaita, a version of the bagpipe from her native region of Galicia. Though it may seem an unusual instrument for jazz, Pato has been able to use it quite effectively, being hailed as “one of the living masters of the Gaita,” by The Wall Street Journal.

Colin Carr, the Artistic Director for Starry Nights as well as Professor of Music at Stony Brook and a renowned cellist, will bring musicians together for an eclectic evening of magnificent music: classical, contemporary, and/or interesting genres in between. Musicians will include Arnaud Sussmann, violin; Colin Carr, cello; Pedro Diaz, oboe; Alan Kay, clarinet; David Jolley, horn and Frank Morelli, bassoon. Stony Brook is HeForShe
Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director of UN Women and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, will give a Presidential Lecture at the Staller Center for the Arts on Monday, September 12. All are welcome.
Executive Director of UN Women to Discuss Gender Equality
Elizabeth Nyamayaro, Head of UN Women’s HeForShe Campaign, was a keynote speaker at Stony Brook’s HeForShe Conference in March. She spoke about leaders who have inspired her commitment to making a difference before elaborating on how the United Nations hopes to inspire men and women across the globe to join together to achieve gender equality. Last year, Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, announced that he had joined the United Nations Women’s HeForShe solidarity movement as an IMPACT 10x10x10 champion, making Stony Brook University one of 10 universities around the world committing to take bold game-changing action to achieve gender equality within and beyond their institutions. This work toward gender equality is being done in partnership with UN Women, the United Nations entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. HeForShe’s IMPACT 10x10x10 program engages 30 key leaders across three sectors — the public sector, private sector and academia. All 30 IMPACT champions have made common commitments and have also developed tailored commitments, formally reviewed by an expert team at UN Women and approved personally by the Executive Director of UN Women, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka (who will be on campus on September 12 for a lecture; see story at right for more details). Stony Brook University is championing three core areas to drive progress on gender equality and will serve as a leader and advocate within the system on these important issues, inviting other colleges and universities to take up common commitments. The three core areas of commitment are: 1. Close the gap between men and women — from matriculation to graduation. 2. Use Stony Brook University’s Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities to build global understanding of the role for men in achieving gender equality. 3. Integrate gender equality into the academic and social
experience of Stony Brook University. Stony Brook University has already implemented a gender sensitization curriculum for students, faculty and staff (including a mandatory orientation for all new students), along with programs addressing gender-based violence. It has met frequently with other IMPACT champions, to transparently measure and report on progress, to share best practices and to engage other universities to take up this cause.
FIRST SUNY-WIDE CONFERENCE ON GENDER EQUALITY Earlier this year, SBU hosted the first SUNY-wide HeForShe Gender Equality Conference, with more than 130 attendees and 26 State University of New York campuses represented. The conference featured several keynote presentations, panel discussions and small group workshops aimed at finding ways to move the gender equality movement forward in all aspects of university life across the SUNY system. A detailed recap of the conference as well as videos of the main sessions can be found on Stony Brook’s HeForShe web page (stonybrook.edu/heforshe). The videos are meant to be shared so that other institutions can use what Stony Brook has learned to encourage gender equality on their own campuses. Throughout the year, Stony Brook will continue to find ways to champion gender equality on campus and beyond. Look for how you can participate in this commitment by visiting stonybrook.edu/heforshe.
Stony Brook University and President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD are proud to welcome Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director of UN Women and Under-SecretaryGeneral of the United Nations, for a Presidential Lecture on Monday, September 12, at the Staller Center for the Arts at 4 pm. The community is encouraged to join us for a lively discussion between President Stanley and Ms. Mlambo-Ngcuka about Stony Brook’s role in achieving gender equality and defeating gender-based discrimination and violence. Community members can also submit questions in advance that the speaker will answer as time permits (see stonybrook.edu/heforshe for details). Ms. Mlambo-Ngcuka has enlightened audiences all over the world representing the United Nations and her visit to Stony Brook will be another important step in our mission toward achieving gender equality.
ABOUT THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka was sworn into office at the United Nations on August 19, 2013, and brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this position, having devoted her career to issues of human rights, equality and social justice. Ms. Mlambo-Ngcuka has worked in government and civil society, and with the private sector, and was actively involved in the struggle to end apartheid in her home country of South Africa. From 2005 to 2008, she served as the first woman Deputy President of South Africa, overseeing programs to combat poverty and bring the advantages of a growing economy to the poor, with a particular focus on women. Prior to this, she served as Minister of Minerals and Energy from 1999 to 2005 and Deputy Minister in the Department of Trade and Industry from 1996 to 1999. She was a Member of Parliament from 1994 to 1996 as part of South Africa’s first democratic government. She worked closely with Nelson Mandela during those early years of democracy and considered him a mentor. Ms. Mlambo-Ngcuka began her career as a teacher and gained international experience as a coordinator at the World YWCA in Geneva, where she established a global program for young women. She is the founder of the Umlambo Foundation, which supports leadership and education. A longtime champion of women’s rights, she is affiliated with several organizations devoted to education, women’s empowerment and gender equality. For more about Ms. Mlambo-Ngcuka or to RSVP/send in questions for the lecture, please visit stonybrook.edu/ heforshe.

open nights series
Shining Light on Astronomy, Physics, Geology and Ecology This September the University kicks off its 43nd year of hosting the Stony Brook Open Nights lecture series. This free series, geared to the general public, began in Fall 1973 with the arrival of Comet Kohoutek and proved to be so popular that they have continued ever since. The talks are held most Fridays during the Fall and Spring semesters. The lectures are grouped into four categories: Astronomy Open Night (usually the first Friday of the month), The Worlds of Physics (second Friday of the month), Geology Open Night (third Friday of the month) and The Living World (fourth Friday of the month). Depending on faculty availability, the schedule may not always follow the usual monthly order. Faculty speak on aspects of their expertise, research or a topic of public interest.
All lectures are held in Room 001 (ground floor) of the Earth and Space Sciences (ESS) Building at 7:30 pm. The lectures are growing in popularity, so please arrive early to get a good seat. Weather permitting, viewing using the University’s telescopes on the roof of the ESS building will follow the lectures. Teachers take note: It may be possible to get in-service credit for any or all of these lectures, as well as for related geology programs. Visit the website and follow the in-service link for more details. For the Astronomy Open Night schedule, visit astro.sunysb.edu/openight. Abstracts for each talk are usually posted about three weeks before the lecture; links to the three other series can also be found on this page.
Distinguished Professor James Lattimer will share his unique perspective on the Universe during his Open Night lecture on September 2.

There’s no doubt that Wolfie is a celebrity — he was the 2009 Three Village Sportsman of the Year and a finalist for Best Mascot in the Long Island Press Best of Long Island 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 contests. He was also featured in the 2011 ESPN College Gameday commercial with fellow collegiate mascots and marched in New York City’s Columbus Day Parade. Wolfie’s favorite activities are cheering at Stony Brook games and having fun with SB fans of all ages. You can find Wolfie cheering for the Seawolves student-athletes wherever he goes. Get Your Grid On Catch Football Fever
If you’re looking for family-friendly entertainment, head to Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium at Stony Brook University this fall and catch our football team in action in its fourth year in the CAA Conference. Chuck Priore is entering his eleventh season as head coach and is looking forward to a great year, which will include three TV appearances for the Seawolves, including the conference opener against defending league champion Richmond on September 17 at 12 pm on the American Sports Network (ASN). Stony Brook will also appear on the NBC Regional Sports Network/Comcast Sportsnet (CSN) when they travel to Towson on October 8 for a 7 pm kickoff. In addition to the pair of televised conference games, Stony Brook will appear on ESPN3 for the game at Temple in Lincoln Financial Field at 1 pm on September 10. Of course, the best way to experience Seawolves football is in person. Season tickets cost only $85 per seat. That’s a real bargain when you compare it with the price of professional sports tickets. Visit stonybrookathletics.com or call (631) 632-4513 for more ticket information.

Seawolves celebrate First Ncaa basketball tournament 2016 was a momentous year for our men’s basketball team and for all Seawolves fans as our team battled their way to become America East Champions and make their first trip to the NCAA basketball tournament this past March. For six long years, the team had been in reach of March Madness, but it took an 80-74 comeback win over a tough Vermont squad to finally net the invite to the Big Dance and to reach the tournament. Although the team ultimately lost to the Kentucky Wildcats in the first round, its accomplishments will be celebrated for years to come. Led by seniors Jameel Warney — SBU’s all-time leading scorer — and Carson Puriefoy, the team possessed a rare chemistry that some say made it the best SBU squad in school history. Keep an eye out on the NBA for Jameel and Carson. We can’t wait to see what they do next!
Boals has spent the summer beefing up his staff with the hiring of assistant coaches Geno Ford, former head coach at Bradley University and Kent State, and Bryan Weber, formerly with Hoop Group. Boals enlisted Andrew Goldstein, also from Ohio State, as director of basketball operations. Rounding out the coaching
roster is assistant coach Lamar Chapman, now in his eighth season at Stony Brook. The Seawolves begin their season in November. Follow Men’s basketball on twitter (@StonyBrookMBB) for all the latest news. To purchase tickets, visit stonybrookathletics.com
New Year, New coacH
Be on the lookout for Jameel Warney — SBU’s all-time leading scorer — during the upcoming NBA season. He played summer league ball for the Dallas Mavericks and may soon be coming to an arena near you.
Following the team’s epic trip to the Dance, it faced some major changes, with three of its top players graduating and its head coach moving on. This year’s team has big shoes to fill but it is up to the challenge. The players will be guided by new head coach Jeff Boals, who spent the past seven seasons as an assistant coach at Ohio State. Boals helped guide Ohio State to seven post-season appearances, including six NCAA Tournaments. The Buckeyes, who won or claimed a share of three Big 10 titles, advanced to the Final Four in 2012. Ohio State went 193-62 during Boals’ time in Columbus.
Fans celebrate the men’s basketball team’s epic win to become America East champions.

Stony Brook Goes Far Beyond the Expected Visitors to Stony Brook have noticed there’s a fresh, new look wherever they turn as the University has rolled out a new branding initiative: Far Beyond. As Stony Brook University continues its ascent as one of the nation’s preeminent research universities, students, faculty, alumni and staff now have a compelling and consistent communications framework from which to tell their stories, to describe their life-changing experiences and to reflect their pride. The “Far Beyond” branding and storytelling unfolds across campus, through banners and building and bus wraps. This new initiative comes at a time when Stony Brook’s momentum is on the rise, and honors are growing in number and prominence. Just recently, Stony Brook faculty and students have been recognized for numerous prestigious honors, including three National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER awards, three Goldwater Scholars and 11 NSF graduate research fellowships. The University continues to be recognized for its strengths

The Stony Brook men’s basketball team won a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the first time and, as a HeForShe IMPACT 10x10x10 University Champion, the University is gearing up for more activities in support of the UN Women’s HeForShe global initiative for gender equality. “Our community recognizes the remarkable, groundbreaking work and outstanding scholarship that take place on our campus every day,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. “Equally important is ensuring that people outside of Stony Brook — peers, the public, media, legislators — see the full breadth of our story and recognize the drive, growing reach and impact of our University. “Far Beyond provides a sustainable platform to tell our story and attract the best and brightest students, faculty, and staff; connect with alumni in a more meaningful way; increase philanthropic support; and extend the University’s impact and visibility around the world. “We have so much to be proud of and celebrate in the remarkable accomplishments of our students, faculty, alumni, and staff,” President Stanley continued. “That excitement deserves to travel beyond our campus, and Far Beyond enables that in a clear, compelling way.” Visit stonybrook.edu for feature stories that show first-hand how Stony Brook faculty, students and staff are going Far Beyond the expected and how their work impacts not only the campus and our community but the world.

IF YOU THInk IT’S TOO LaTe TO CHanGe, reaD THe COmmenTS FrOm mY prOUD paTIenTS beLOW: The results I have achieved working with Dr. Dunaief have been quite remarkable. My primary goal was to reduce average blood pressure to acceptable levels. This was accomplished in a little over 3 months. Coincidentally I was able to reduce my overall cholesterol from 250 to 177 with a much improved LDL/HDL ratio in 4 months. In addition I lost over 30 lbs and went from 24% body fat to 17.7%. I have some good days but mostly great days and I’m very happy with the results and look forward to even more improvement in the future. —D.L., age 64
“My pain has subsided considerably. But, I must tell you that I don’t think I would have made it this far without your help. I was a mess when I first saw you, but you gave me a new sense of strength, new knowledge about nutrition and just a better regard for myself.” ~ Nurse Practitioner/ IBS and ulcerative colitis sufferer, age 62
“My cardiologist was so impressed with my results. By following Dr. Dunaief’s advice, I’ve been able to stop all three of my blood pressure medications. My heart palpitations, which were limiting my activities, have dramatically reduced in frequency, my energy levels have increased and I have lost 15 pounds in two months.” ~ Nurse, age 62 “I feel awesome after eating the diet, especially in the morning. I can’t believe how much has improved with such small changes. My cholesterol is normal, and my triglycerides dropped dramatically - almost 200 points! My blood pressure medication was stopped, yet my blood pressure is the best it has ever been.” ~ E.M., age 44

TAILORING WORKSHOPS The Center for Italian Studies continues to collaborate with local craftsman to preserve the tradition of Bespoke Tailoring. Did you know that Stony Brook University has a gigantic collection of Chinese cookbooks? What about letters from Revolutionary War spies? Or rare maps of Long Island? All these and hundreds of other intriguing historical items can be found at the University Library’s Special Collections and University Archives. Stony Brook University Libraries is the largest academic research library system on Long Island and maintains membership in the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), a non-profit consortium of 125 distinguished libraries in North America. The collections and services offered by the libraries are central to the academic success of students and facilitate the scholarship produced by world-renowned faculty and visiting scholars. The University’s collections of rare maps, atlases, manuscripts and books comprise the largest repository of archival materials in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Special Collections and University Archives is the steward of these distinctive primary source materials. The Senator Jacob K. Javits Collection contains nearly two million separate items that document modern United States history and the career of New York’s longest serving state senator in the United States. The W.B. Yeats Collection is the most extensive collection of the famed Irish poet and author’s manuscripts housed outside of Ireland. In 2002, the department became the official repository for the Environmental Defense Fund, whose efforts

In 2006 and 2009, two exciting American Revolutionary War-era letters authored by George Washington, documenting spy activities in Setauket, NY, during 1779 and 1780, were acquired. The purchase of these letters was made possible with a generous gift from Dr. Henry and Marsha Laufer, and laid the foundation for the establishment of a Long Island Historic Documents Collection. The collection includes primary and secondary source material on the history of Long Island from the earliest settlers through the present, with a strong emphasis on the period of the American Revolution through the War of 1812 (17641812). Many of these documents have been digitized and can be viewed online at specialcollections-stonybrook.culturalspot. org. For documents not available online, visitors may make an appointment to visit the department. Advance notice is required, as collections need to be retrieved. dalcroze eurhythMics levels 1 and 2 (K To Grade 3) Imagination and creativity underline the Dalcroze method in which children will use expressive movement as a way to listen for and understand musical concepts. This method uses spontaneity, improvisation and natural movement to help children learn the elements of music in fun and engaging ways.
Pre-college division (Grade 6 To Grade 12) The Pre-College Division is aimed at talented young musicians who are looking for exciting, new experiences to enrich their musical training. the master works, and develop their musical ears through aural skills courses. Not only will students emerge as stronger musicians, but they’ll also have a leg up when they apply for college.
