Charles Dickens, Court Reporter The years between 1828 and 1831, the years of debating the reform bill, proved to be lively and transformative not only for England but for a young man named Charles Dickens. Mid-16th century, Parliament prohibited all reporting/publishing of its proceedings believing it should deliberate in private and regarded any attempt to publicize its proceedings as a punishable offense. Later in that century, conflicts among progressive members of Parliament and growing weight of public opinion persuaded Parliament to relax its stance. In 1803, the House of Commons passed a resolution giving the press the right to enter the public gallery. Reporting of lively, quarrelsome Parliamentary debates meant citizens could stay informed about the government’s proceedings. During that time, William Cobbett’s Weekly Political Register, added the supplement Parliamentary Debates to the newspaper, which was a reprint of journalists’ reports of speeches extracted from other newspapers. In 1812, Cobbett sold his business to Thomas Hansard, son of Luke Hansard, printer to the House of Commons, and the title changed to Hansards Parliamentary Debates. The Hansard Family produced the Parliamentary Debates until 1889 making the Hansard name synonymous with the printed debates. Charles Dickens’ uncle, John Henry Barrow, was a successful journalist who had previously reported the proceedings of Doctors’ Commons for the Times. Barrow had established the Mirror of Parliament, a weekly newspaper that offered verbatim reporting of Parliamentary debates. Wanting to rival the Hansard by offering the complete record of what went on in the House of Commons, he assembled a team of stenographers to help him including his brother, Edward, and Charles’ father, John, as reporters, and young Charles was inspired to learn shorthand. Charles, a junior law clerk earning 15 schillings per week, went to a bookshop, examined textbooks on various shorthand systems that were available, and decided Thomas Gurney’s System of Shorthand was the system for him since it was the most expensive at 10 schillings. Most completed shorthand training in three years, but Charles became proficient in two. His first experience as a reporter was in the Doctors’ Commons (aka College of Civilians). Doctors’ Commons was a society of lawyers practicing civil law in London. Members lived and worked in the society’s buildings. Court proceedings of civil law courts were held there. Lawyers dressed in scarlet robes and white wigs, argued divorces and wills in dusty rooms where stale musty odors permeated the air. Irregular, freelance work frustrated Charles, who was always waiting to be chosen by one of the proctors to provide shorthand services. In love with Maria Beadnell, he needed to become more than a stenographer in Doctors’ Commons to impress her parents. In 1831, John Barrow added Charles to his shorthand reporter team. Reporters were well paid for their short shifts. Charles matched veteran reporters’ shorthand skills in speed and accuracy and was soon working at House of Commons where it was just as stuffy as the Doctors’ Commons but more interesting. The Public Gallery of the Old House of Commons in St. Stephen’s Chapel was cramped, gloomy, and stuffy. Charles made himself available for debates, even if they went late into the night. Squeezing himself onto a bench provided for visitors in the cramped gallery, balancing a notebook on his knees, straining to hear speeches and exchanges said in the thick atmosphere of the chamber floor below him, he would capture the words by the gas chandeliers light. Dickens would transcribe his handwritten stenographic notes later at the newspaper office. To Charles, the work involved more stenography and less creativity. He became the major contributor to the Mirror of Parliament‘s full report of the first major debate on the proposed Reform Act in March of 1831. In organizing an official Parliamentary record, he gained a reputation as a fast, accurate, and trustworthy reporter and in March 1832, he was a Parliamentary reporter for two newspapers: True Sun, and Mirror of Parliament. For him, the reporting was not just about transcription, but narration/interpretation, and would add local color to the objective dryness. Being a Parliamentary reporter was like being in an exclusive/influential club in London. Gallery reporters established themselves as the conscience of a political system that was starting to examine its workings. Politicians and reporters discovered they needed one another. Changes began in 1831, when the House of Lords designated a separate row of seats for reporters, and in 1835, the design for the new Palace of Westminster, included special galleries for reporters. Eventually, Dickens became more of a writer than a reporter for the newspapers. He used years of experience as a court reporter as inspiration for what would become some of his most popular novels. Themes in his story Oliver Twist came from listening to the debates on reform. He mentions the profession in David Copperfield, stating that learning the “noble art and mystery of stenography” plunged him “into a sea of perplexity.” The legal system that worked against the lower classes in Victorian London was immersed in to his stories to give his readers a vivid and realistic legal backdrop in books such as Bleak House and Nicholas Nickleby. Court reporters, like Dickens, are known to have a front seat to history. If you would like your front row seat to history, contact the Court Reporting Program, at LIBI (www.libi.edu), (631-499-7100). ©153966
CHARLES DICKENS FESTIVAL
Welcome to the 23rd annual Village of Port Jefferson Charles Dickens Festival!
A
s fall sheds its leafy coat in preparation for winter, the first weekend in December once again plays host to the beloved Village of Port Jefferson Charles Dickens Festival. Join us as we celebrate the Festival’s 23rd anniversary through our cherished traditions and spectacular new additions that will add a sparkle and a smile to this magical weekend. Hailed as one of Long Island’s top ten events, the festival begins on Saturday, December 1, running through Sunday, December 2. Produced by the Greater Port Jefferson-Northern Brookhaven Arts Council in cooperation with the Incorporated Village of Port Jefferson, friends and families from across the northeast, from all 50 states and, indeed, from around the globe, will gather to celebrate the beloved author as we once again turn our quaint seaport village into a living Dickens stage. Born Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870), Charles Dickens was arguably the literary superstar of his age, a status that lives on today. Ever the champion of the common man and the downtrodden, his inventive genius has inspired a raft of theatrical performanc-
es and a parade of films that portray the drama and redemption of life as a central theme. From “A Tale of Two Cities” to “A Christmas Carol,” Dickens managed to create some of literature’s most iconic and memorable personalities. Dickens made two reading tour trips to the United States and Canada, in 1842 and again in 1867, meeting with a long list of contemporary luminaries of the time including Washington Irving, William Cullen Bryant, President John Tyler, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Dickens’ American publisher James Thomas Fields. Be on the lookout for the engaging “Mrs. Cratchit’s Colorful Christmas Crafts” event, featuring a potpourri of small craft and cookie kits for families to purchase and put together in time for the holiday season. Mrs. Cratchit’s and the expanded Festival of Trees are found at the Port Jefferson Village Center. The whimsical Santa’s Workshop, an incredible tribute to Christmas of yesteryear once again created by the celebrated confection artist Pat Darling, should be on every person’s “must see” list because this magical presentation is
not to be missed. Look for it on the corner of Barnum and West Main Street. The Artisan Square, showing how hand crafted works were made during Victorian England, and the spectacular Tiny Tim’s Train Station (a Toys for Tots location), presented by the Reed Family Train Project at the Harbormaster’s building, rounds out the big attractions. The restaurants offer Dickensian inspired fare, while the wide range of shops in the village stay open for extended hours for holiday shopping. The Village, once again, will be rich with our troupe of Dickens’ street characters and alive with a host of musical, magical and theatrical presentations sure to delight the Scroogiest of curmudgeons. A splendid time is guaranteed for all. Please join us for a wonderful time! Margot Garant Mayor, Village of Port Jefferson Allan Varela Chair, Greater Port Jefferson-Northern Brookhaven Arts Council

Candles flicker in the windows beckoning young and old to visit Santa’s whimsical three-room workshop. Dazzling decorations and the twinkle of little white lights serve as a prelude to all that awaits you in the historic Drowned Meadow House. Snowflakes glisten high above confection displays created by renowned confection artist Pat Darling. Elaborate confection nutcrackers and giant turrets embellish the beautiful displays throughout the workshop area. The tour continues as you depart the workshop and enter little Hollyberry’s bedroom. This elaborate vignette finds Hollyberry sitting by a glowing fireplace. Anticipating the night before Christmas, she is busily wrapping her Christmas presents for Mommy and Daddy. Her room is all aglow as she looks out upon Santa’s whimsical Christmas forest. Oh my, how

his year we are presenting a wonderfully decked-out-for-Christmas model train exhibit located at the Harbormaster’s Building (number 18 on map), Port Jefferson. The location will also be host to the Toys-for-Tots toy-raising event. The Commander, Marine Forces Reserve, with the assistance of his staff from the Marine Forces Reserve Headquarters, directs the Toys-for-Tots program, delivering much-needed toys to children for the holiday season. Festival visitors are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys and drop them in the collection box next to the exhibit while looking at different model train sets course around the setup. This is a family favorite and this year is presented by Maggio Environmental, Robert Gitto of The Gitto Group and the Town of Brookhaven. Beginning in 1763, Scottish engineer James Watt tinkered with the original steam engine design that led to the first steam engine locomotive prototype built by British engineer Richard Trevithick in 1804. 1814 witnessed the first successful steam engine train, built by British engineer George Stephenson, that could haul up to 30 tons of coal at a “breakneck” uphill speed of four miles per hour. Train tracks were soon found crisscrossing the globe as the steam locomotive helped to usher in the Industrial Era in Britain and

Charles Dickens was so amazed by this new invention he named a powerful new breed of locomotive, built for speedy service on the American Baltimore & Ohio Railroad’s expanding system, the Pegasus, commenting, “If it had spread its wings and flew away, no one would be the least bit surprised!” Oliver Twist’s Artisan Square The Artisan Square will feature five artisans who demonstrate how crafts were done during Dickens’ time. The Arts & Crafts movement began in Victorian Britain in the 1860s as a response to the demise of the older craft guilds in favor of industrialized manufacturing. Lead by artist and writer William Morris, the Arts & Crafts movement sought to bring back high quality, handmade workmanship. Our Dickens Festival Artisans utilize 19th century tools to elucidate festival attendees in the creative process behind their respective crafts. In addition to demonstrating techniques, they engage festival attendees in conversations that encourage a comparison between old and modern tools, methods and products that are used in everyday life. You can find the Artisan Square next to Kilwins on Main Street just South of the blinking light at Main Street and East/ West Broadway. Sponsored by People’s United Bank, Maggio Environmental Services, The Gitto Group, Long Island Business News and the Town of Brookhaven.

Always an outgoing and fun loving individual, his personality shines through his layers of dirt and soot and he’s always ready for a story or joke as he loves meeting people who come to Port Jefferson during the festival. He is an ordained minister, he stays active in the church and even is a Civil War reenactor. He does motorcycle and veterans advocacy and can sometimes be quite vocal. 23rd Dickens Festival honorees: Jill Nees-Russell and Kathy O’Sullivan
his year it is our great pleasure to honor both Jill Nees-Russell and Kathy O’Sullivan for the 23rd Annual Charles Dickens Festival. Jill Nees-Russell: The honoring this year is tinged with sadness as our wonderful Ms. Jill recently passed on. Jill was a magical lady with keen creative intelligence that made every program, organization and person she worked with better for the experience. Her warm smile and infectious laugh greeted life each day making the sun shine a little brighter on all the inventive programs she implemented for the area. During her early years in Port Jefferson Jill quickly stepped into an active role with Edna Louise Spear Port Jefferson elementa-

ry school. She was named PTA president, which she served for 3 years and created The Green Team advocating sustainable green programs through community clean-ups and recycling programs. She also brought the Science Fair back to the school for two years. She worked on many of the boys’ and girls’ events and delivered the 5th grade commencement speech in 2015. Jill started working with Margot Garant as consultant of economic development and public relations in 2011. While in this role she was instrumental in creating the Boater’s Maritime Festival that was held for the last six years. Jill was also instrumental during the Dickens Festival Continued on page 16

Pickwick’s Puppet Parade The closing Pickwick’s Puppet Parade will feature a super new artistic look through the creative efforts of Genevieve Varela and Vin Blangiardo – Marley’s Ghost and Christmas Past will come alive with amazing intensity. But the action doesn’t stop there as the parade will feature the entire 138-piece Longwood High School marching band as a special treat. Also included is this year’s GPJAC Artist in Residence winner, Laurie Bouilliane, as Ms. Theodosia Pickering, the proprietress of her latest venture, the Raven’s Wing Hattery. She is both the designer and the creator of delightful Victorian-styled millinery confections for the fashion-conscious lady of means. The puppets are sponsored by The Shipyard at Port Jeff Harbor, Long Island Business News. The Longwood Marching band is sponsored by: Kilwins Port Jeffferson, Uncle Giuseppe’s and The Barony of An Dubhaigeann –The Artisans.

Adult Reading Room in the original section of the main library will play host to Dickens era model trains depicting two of the earliest trains: DeWitt Clinton, named after the father of the Erie Canal and which made its maiden run on August 9, 1831, and the Pegasus train that Dickens himself named because of its amazing speed for the day. The fabulous Festival of Trees celebration
H
ear ye, Hear ye! Take a look at the fantastic Festival of Trees at the Port Jefferson Village Center. The second floor will host a magical presentation of Christmas trees featuring decorations that are guaranteed to dazzle and delight. Each tree will present the sponsor’s vision expertly crafted and garnished…and not to be missed. New to England in 1800, the decorated Christmas tree was a firm tradition in what is now Germany, but it was kept to the English Royal Family until 1841 when Queen Victoria married Germanborn Prince Albert. From that time the decorating of the Christmas tree tradition spread quickly from the hoity-toity to the hoi polloi. Charles Dickens himself regaled in the tradition having penned “A Christmas Tree” in 1850: “I have been

looking on, this evening, at a merry company of children assembled round that pretty German toy, a Christmas Tree… Now, the tree is decorated with bright merriment, and song, and
dance, and cheerfulness. And they are welcome. Innocent and welcome be they ever held, beneath the branches of the Christmas Tree, which cast no gloomy shadow!”
The Festival of Trees will be available to view at the Dickens Festival up through the end of December. Thanks to BNB Bank, Port Jefferson Harbor Education and Arts Conservancy.
