Welcome to the 21st annual Village of Port Jefferson charles Dickens festiVal!

s fall sheds its leafy coat in preparation for winter, the first weekend in December once again plays host to the beloved Village of Port Jefferson Charles Dickens Festival. Join us as we celebrate the festival’s 21st anniversary through our cherished traditions and spectacular new additions that will add a sparkle and a smile to this magical weekend. Hailed as one of Long Island’s top 10 yearly events, the festival will begin on Saturday, Dec. 3, and run through Sunday, Dec. 4. Produced by the Greater Port Jefferson-Northern Brookhaven Arts Council in cooperation with the Incorporated Village of Port Jefferson, the community will gather to celebrate the beloved author as we once again turn our quaint seaport village into a living Dickens stage. Born Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870), Charles Dickens was arguably the literary superstar of his age, a status that lives on today. Ever the champion of the common man and the downtrodden, his inventive genius has inspired a raft of theatrical performances and a parade of films that portray the drama and redemption of life as a central theme. From “A Tale of Two Cities” to “A Christmas Carol,” Dickens managed to create some of literature’s most iconic and memorable personalities. The author made two reading tour trips to the United States and Canada, in 1842 and again in 1867, meeting with a long list of contemporary luminaries including Washington Irving, William Cullen Bryant, President John Tyler, Ralph Waldo

New this year is the wonderful Mrs. Cratchit’s Colorful Christmas Crafts event, featuring a potpourri of small craft kits for families to purchase and put together in time for the holiday season. Mrs. Cratchit’s and the expanded Festival of Trees are found at the Village Center. The whimsical Santa’s Workshop, an incredible tribute to Christmas of yesteryear once again created by the celebrated confection artist Pat Darling, should be on

every person’s “must see” list because this magical presentation is not to be missed. The Artisan Square, showing how hand-crafted works were made during Victorian England, the spectacular Tiny Tim’s Train Station, presented by the Reed Family Train Project, and a stop at CookieLand at the Harbormaster’s building rounds out the big attractions. Restaurants will offer Dickensian-inspired fare, while the wide range of shops in the village stay open for extended hours for holiday shopping. The Village, once again, will be rich with our troupe of Dickens’ street characters and

Candles flicker in the windows beckoning young and old to visit Santa’s whimsical three-room workshop. Dazzling decorations and the twinkle of little white lights serve as a prelude to all that awaits you in the Historical Drowned Meadow House. Entering Santa’s Workshop, visitors will marvel at this year’s elaborate confection displays designed and executed by renowned confection artist, Pat Darling. Her career has encompassed both national publications and television. The tour continues as you depart the workshop and enter little Hollyberry’s bedroom. This elaborate vignette

Nestled deep beneath the trees visitors are greeted by the whimsical Christmas gnomes … truly a fantasy to behold! Departing Winterscape, visitors are greeted by Santa, awaiting the arrival of one and all. Be sure to bring your cameras to capture the magic of this memorable visit to Santa’s Workshop.

Tiny Tim’s Train sTaTion

n 1763, Scottish engineer James Watt tinkered with the original steam engine design that led to the first steam engine locomotive prototype built by British engineer Richard Trevithick in 1804. 1814 witnessed the first successful steam engine train, built by British engineer George Stephenson, that could haul up to 30 tons of coal at a breakneck uphill speed of four miles per hour. Train tracks were soon found crisscrossing the globe; the steam locomotive helped to usher in the Industrial Era in Britain and America. Charles Dickens was so amazed by this new invention he named a powerful new breed of locomotive, built for speedy service on the American Baltimore & Ohio Railroad’s expanding system, the Pegasus, commenting, “If it had spread its wings and flew away, no one would be the least bit surprised!” This year we are presenting a wonderfully decked-out-forChristmas model train exhibit located at 326 Main Street, Port Jefferson in the former Elegance Lighting location next to the Village Grocery. Hours will be noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The location will also be host to the Toys-for-Tots toy-raising event. The Commander, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, with the assistance of his staff headquarters, directs the Toys-for-Tots program, delivering much-needed toys to children for the holiday season. Festival visitors are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys and drop them in the collection box next to the exhibit.

Dickens Festival Honoree: tBr news MeDia

“Consider nothing impossible, then treat possibilities as probabilities.” harles Dickens wrote these wise words in the beloved novel, “David Copperfield.” Few quotes could so eloquently capture the essence of this year’s honoree: TBR News Media. Our village is proud to honor a publication that has served the greater Port Jefferson community and beyond for 40 years. Originally founded during America’s bicentennial in 1976 under the direction of publisher Leah Dunaief, what began as The Village Times (now Village Times Herald) has since expanded across the North Shore of Long Island to include the Port Times Record, Times of Huntington, Northport, & East Northport, Village Beacon Record, Times of Smithtown, and Times of Middle Country. Some of TBR’s unique offerings include “Bridges,” a resource guide to Stony Brook University, “Homes,” a 38-year-old real estate publication, “Men & Women of the Year,” honoring those who have gone the extra mile for the community in a special issue published the last week of the year, and introducing Neighborhood Watch to Suffolk County. Their strong editorials also helped win support for expanding Emma S. Clark Library in Setauket and saving

Deepwells, an estate in St. James, among many other worthwhile efforts. Leah Dunaief began her business at a time when there were few women at the top of the industry. That didn’t stop her though. It was Christmas Day 1976 when she bumped into a neighboring publisher. He told her “... you tell that guy up there he’s doing a hell of a job!” She couldn’t help but laugh. There was no man behind the curtain, just Leah and her team. In time she became the President of the New York Press Association, has been invited to the White House on many different occasions and has had the honor of being the guest of four U.S. presidents. She has become an award-winning columnist and has been named one of Long Island’s most influential women. Her legacy continues to grow with each passing year as TBR News Media remains committed to making an issue of excellence each and every week. In the past two years alone, TBR News Media launched its new Lifestyle Magazine series, produced a Culper Spy Adventure interactive mini-film, hosted an exquisite gala and live show aboard the P.T. Barnum ferry, launched a new stateof-the-art website, introduced its first

podcast show, re-designed all six of its newspapers, and celebrated its beloved Port Jefferson with the filming of “The Abridged Works of Charles Dickens.” Though the company continues to evolve and grow, its thirst for quality journalism has never diminished. TBR News Media prints the stories we need to hear: investigating complex issues like the heroin/opioid epidemic, keeping us informed about happenings in local government, providing award-winning sports coverage, offering reviews for local theater,

The Fabulous FesTival oF Trees CelebraTion

C

ome one, come all to the 3rd annual Festival of Trees at the Port Jefferson Village Center. The second floor will host a magical presentation of Christmas trees featuring decorations that are guaranteed to dazzle

and delight. Each tree will present the sponsors’ vision expertly crafted and garnished … and not to be missed. Trees will be decorated by the following participants: Ace Hardware, Bridgehampton National Bank, Danfords Hotel and Marina, Edna Louise Elementary School, First United Methodist Church, the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce, Hardts and Flowers, Maryhaven Center of Hope, Old Towne Gardens, Diamond Jewelers, Pat Darling/Antique Costumes & Prop Rental by Nan, Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, PJ Lobster House, Port Jefferson Free Library, Port Jefferson Rotary Club, Red Sled Christmas Shoppe and Theatre Three. New to England in 1800, the decorated Christmas tree was a firm tradition in what is now Germany, but it was kept to the English Royal Family until 1841 when Queen Victoria married German-born Prince Albert. From that time the decorating

of the Christmas tree tradition spread quickly from the hoitytoity to the hoi polloi. Charles Dickens himself regaled in the tradition having penned “A Christmas Tree” in 1850: “I have been looking on, this evening, at a merry company of children assembled round that pretty German toy, a Christmas Tree … Now, the tree is decorated with bright merriment, and song, and dance, and cheerfulness. And they are welcome. Innocent and welcome be they ever held, beneath the branches of the Christmas Tree, which cast no gloomy shadow!” The Festival of Trees will be available for viewing at the Dickens Festival up through the end of December.

Thanks to Bridgehampton National Bank, Empire National Bank and Optimum Community for sponsoring this event.
