CHARLES DICKENS FESTIVAL
Welcome to the 25th Annual Village of Port Jefferson Charles Dickens Festival!
A
s fall sheds its leafy coat in preparation for winter, the first weekend in December once again plays host to the beloved Village of Port Jefferson Charles Dickens Festival. Join us as we celebrate our 25th Anniversary through our cherished traditions and spectacular new additions that will add a sparkle and a smile to this magical weekend. We are coming back into the light after the dark COVID days of 2020. However, we are advising that you wear a mask when at an indoor event. We will be following all New York State recommendations for masks and social distancing regulations set for the weekend as they become available. Some venues, like Theatre Three, have strict vaccine and
masking rules. The main thing is STAY SAFE AND HAVE FUN! Hailed as Long Island’s best festival for 2019 and 2020, Dickens begins on Saturday, December 4, running through Sunday, December 5. Produced by the Greater Port Jefferson-Northern Brookhaven Arts Council in cooperation with the Incorporated Village of Port Jefferson, friends and families from across the Northeast, from all 50 states and, indeed, from around the globe (over 50 guests from the EU in 2019), will gather to celebrate the beloved author as we once again turn our quaint seaport village into a living Dickens stage. Born Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870), Charles Dickens was arguably the literary superstar of his age, a status that lives on today. Ever the champion of the common man and the downtrodden, his inventive genius has inspired a raft of theatrical performances and a parade of films that portray the drama and redemption of life as a central theme. From A Tale of Two Cities to A Christmas Carol, Dickens managed to create some of literature’s most iconic and memorable personalities. We are proud to carry on this timee honored tradition th to d te ca ival is dedi with our Dickens of This year the Fest or ey rv pu uzzetta, the Festival e memory of Nan G nc si al ickens Festiv The wondercostumes for the D ion. incept ous Festival of Trees, an artistic collection of

magnificent Christmas creations, are found at the Port Jefferson Village Center on the second floor and will be available for viewing the entire month. The whimsical Santa’s Workshop, an incredible tribute to Christmas of yesteryear once again created by the celebrated confection artist Pat Darling, should be on every person’s “must see” list because this magical presentation is not to be missed. Free tickets will be available on Eventbrite to avoid long lines. Horse Carriage Rides ($2 pp) will start in front of Harborview Christian Church. Tickets also available on Eventbrite. Look for it on the corner of Barnum and West Main Street. The Artisan Square, showing how hand-crafted works were made during Victorian England, resides in the parking lot by the blinking light where Main Street and East and West Broadway merge. The spectacular Tiny Tim’s Train Station (a Toys for Tots location), presented by the Reed Family Train Project, will dazzle at the Harbormaster’s building. The restaurants offer Dickensian inspired fare, while the wide range of shops in the village stay open
for extended hours for holiday shopping. The Village, once again, will be rich with our troupe of Dickens’ Street Characters and alive with a host of musical, magical and theatrical presentations. The Grand East Main Street Opening Parade on Saturday morning at 11:00 AM and Pickwick’s Puppet Parade, this year featuring the new puppets worthy of a major Hollywood feature film, ends the festivities beginning at 5:00 PM on Sunday. Don’t miss either one as each parade features awe-inspiring new attractions. So, come one! Come all! A rapturous time for the young and young at heart, the Dickens Festival is sure to delight the Scroogiest of curmudgeons. A splendid time is guaranteed for all. or this year we are presenting a wonderfully decked-out-for-Christmas model train exhibit, located at the Harbormaster’s Building in Port Jefferson, as a remembrance memorial for Marie Reed who passed away in March of this year. The Reed Family Train Project works for weeks to assemble a truly stunning exhibit that is sure to captivate one and all. The location will also be host to the Toys-for-Tots toy-raising event. The Commander, Marine Forces Reserve, with the assistance of his staff from the Marine Forces Reserve Headquarters, directs the Toys-for-Tots program, delivering much-needed toys to children for the holiday season. Festival visitors are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys and drop them in the collection box next to the exhibit while looking at different model train sets course around the setup. This is a family favorite, and this year is presented by the Town of Brookhaven.
Beginning in 1763, Scottish engineer James Watt tinkered with the original steam engine design that led to the first steam engine locomotive prototype built by British engineer Richard Trevithick in 1804. 1814 witnessed the first successful steam engine train, built by British engineer George Stephenson, that could haul up to 30 tons of coal at a “breakneck” uphill speed of four miles per hour. Train tracks were soon found crisscrossing the globe as the steam locomotive helped to usher in the Industrial Era in Britain and America. Charles Dickens was so amazed by this new invention he named a powerful new breed of locomotive, built for speedy service on the American Baltimore & Ohio Railroad’s expanding system, the Pegasus, commenting, “If it had spread its wings and flew away, no one would be the least bit surprised!” Sponsored by: Salerno Brokerage Corp.

The Artisan Square will feature five artisans who demonstrate how crafts were done during Dickens’ time. The Arts & Crafts movement began in Victorian Britain in the 1860s as a response to the demise of the older craft guilds in favor of industrialized manufacturing. Lead by artist and writer William Morris, the Arts & Crafts movement sought to bring back high quality, handmade workmanship. process behind their respective crafts. In addition to demonstrating techniques, they engage festival attendees in conversations that encourage a comparison between old and modern tools, methods and products that are used in everyday life. You can find the Artisan Square next to Killwins on Main Street just South of the blinking light at Main Street and East/West Broadway. Masks are required and a limited number of people will be allowed in at a time. Sponsored by: Suffolk Tent

or the last time, step back in time and reflect on the storybook charm of cherished memories of an era that has quietly faded. Candles flicker in the windows beckoning young and old to visit Santa’s whimsical three-room workshop. Dazzling decorations and the twinkle of little white lights serve as a prelude to all that awaits you in the Historic Drowned Meadow House. Entering the workshop, snowflakes glisten high above the elaborate confection displays created by published confection artist Pat Darling. Nutcrackers and an elaborate merry-goround embellish the beautiful displays throughout the workshop area. The tour continues as you depart the workshop and enter little Hollyberry’s bedroom. This elaborate vignette finds Hollyberry sitting by a glowing fireplace busily wrapping her Christmas presents for Mommy and Daddy. Her room is all aglow as she looks out upon Santa’s enchanting Christmas forest. Oh my, how exciting… Santa and his reindeer appear through the glittering snowflakes blanketing Santa’s magical gnome village under the Christmas tree. Truly a must see! Departing the Christmas forest, visitors are greeted by Santa, awaiting the arrival of one and all. Capture the magic of this memorable visit to Santa’s Workshop. Free tickets will be available for Santa’s Workshop on Eventbrite.

CHARLES DICKENS FESTIVAL
The Enchanting Festival of Trees Celebration
H
ear ye, Hear ye! The 25th Annual Charles Dickens Festival invites you to take a look at the enchanting Festival of Trees at the Port Jefferson Village Center. The second floor will host a magical presentation of Christmas trees featuring decorations that are guaranteed to dazzle and delight. Each tree will present the sponsor’s vision, expertly crafted and garnished…and not to be missed. New to England in 1800, the decorated Christmas tree was a firm tradition in what is now Germany, but it was kept to the English Royal Family until 1841 when Queen Victoria married Germanborn Prince Albert. From that time
the decorating of the Christmas tree tradition spread quickly from the hoitytoity to the hoi polloi. Charles Dickens himself regaled in the tradition having penned “A Christmas Tree” in 1850: “I have been looking on, this evening, at a merry company of children assembled round that pretty German toy, a Christmas Tree… Now, the tree is decorated with bright merriment, and song, and dance, and cheerfulness. And they are welcome. Innocent and welcome be they ever held, beneath the branches of the Christmas Tree, which cast no gloomy shadow!” The Festival of Trees will be available to view at the Dickens Festival up through the end of December.

Candice Night, the internationally acclaimed lead singer of Blackmore’s Night, will be back again as the Magical Snow Queen for the closing parade of the 25th Annual Charles Dickens Festival. Blackmore’s Night has been known for the past two decades for taking melodies from centuries gone by and updating them with new instrumentation, new arrangements, and Night’s lyrics that capture, “the nostalgic memories we all share from our childhood to bring us back to a time where you felt safe, secure and loved,” exclaims Night. The band has released a remastered version of “Winter Carols” with a few surprise additions for the holidays.
