Save Your Leaning Fence

What happens next when wind or storms create damage?

Fences are perfect for so many things, from creating privacy and security to providing a safe, enclosed space for children and pets to play. But being outside puts them at risk of damage from high winds and storms. You may even end up with a leaning fence after a traffic mishap.

The good news is, they can typically be fixed without a major reinstallation or renovation project. Just make sure you make these needed repairs sooner, rather than later, since damage to one section can quickly weaken others.

DETERMINE THE CAUSE

There could be a number of factors impacting your fence’s structural integrity. Figuring that out first will help determine which steps to take next. For instance, the posts may not have been installed deeply enough. In this case, they

would struggle to resist excessive moisture or high winds.

Rotting wood is typically a sign that the wrong kind of materials was used – though even recommended pressure treated woods can warp over time. If you determine that the post is rotten, then it will have to be completely replaced. Otherwise, you should be able to make a quick fix, provided you have the right tools.

GETTING TO WORK

Head to the local hardware or home improvement store if you do not own a fence mender. This strip of heavy-duty metal has holes so that the post can be attached to an anchor. Grab a few bags of concrete while you’re there — but ensure that it’s designed for fence posts, or you’ll be repeating this process on a much shorter timeline. Next, assess and clean the area around the post.

You’ll need a helpmate to hold the post in place while you set the mender. Drive the mender into the ground next to the post, creating a

stronger base, then affix the mender to the post with a drill.

Once you’ve completed this process, add some extra concrete for more stability. Closely follow the instructions for the concrete so that it has a durable bond — then reattach the fence, as needed.

Still struggling with a leaning fence, or finding yourself in a bind while trying to complete this process? Call in a professional. Incorrect or incomplete repairs can end up causing even more extensive damage.

Preparing for Summer

Celebrate warmer months, while working to keep the heat out.

If you noticed higher electric bills during the winter, the time is right to insulate your home against summer’s heat. The process can seem more complicated that it really is, mostly because of unfamiliar terms like “R-value” and the variety of materials to choose from.

Scientific processes involved in heating like conduction and convection will also be thrown around. Conduction describes how heat moves through your home’s walls or windows, while convection is the transfer of heat through liquid or gases like air. The process of convection also pushes heat higher into the air, which explains why upstairs or attic spaces are often hotter than other floors.

Once you’ve familiarized yourself with it all, you’ll be ready to prepare your home for summer.

DIFFERENT MATERIALS

Insulation comes in many forms, including fiberglass, foam, cellulose,

wool and foil. Each has its own special strengths and uses. Bulkier versions like fiberglass and foam are typically used in cavity spaces, like attics, because they resist the flow of convective heat. Fiberglass is the most common form of insulation in homes, where it’s rolled out in a blanket or scattered as a loose fill. Fiberglass may also be blown in using special machines. Foil reflects heat away from your home. The Department of Energy suggests this kind of insulation for those in cooler climates.

R-VALUES

An insulation product’s R-value describes its resistance to conductive air flow. These values are also dependent on age, temperatures and the accumulation of moisture. Adding more insulation will decrease air transfer, keeping your home cooler in the summer. Just remember that you may need insulation with different values depending on where it’s being used. Consult the U.S. Department of Energy site for more tips on weatherizing your home. Local insulation companies or contractors

can also discuss your home’s individual needs.

GETTING AN AUDIT

Insufficient insulation will often be revealed through your monthly energy costs. If you’re having trouble pinpointing the problem, consider getting a free or low cost energy audit from a local company or your energy provider. They’ll visit your home, examine the property for physical problems, and discuss your family’s typical behavior in the summer. This will help them determine an ideal consumption level. In some cases, they’ll use special equipment to gauge energy loss, and those details will also inform their recommendations.

Repairing the Driveway

Preventative maintenance will often extend its life for decades.

Filling in cracks each year and sealing your driveway smooths the way home, while helping to ensure that it lasts as long as intended. It’s a little time consuming and there are material purchases involved, however, so paying someone to do it for you can run into the hundreds of dollars. Here’s how to save on those labor costs.

DIFFERENT MATERIALS

Most driveways are made of concrete, because smaller crews and experienced handymen can install and repair them. It’s a very strong material, and lasts as long as 50 years. Smaller cracks of less than an inch can be fixed with filler from a standard caulking gun, while larger cracks require a foam pre-caulking rod. Flaking usually means a more extensive resurfacing. Asphalt driveways require a much larger team to install, but can typically be worked on by individual

homeowners. Meant to last a couple of decades, asphalt can usually be repaired with sealant from a caulking gun.

GETTING IT DONE

You’ll need some specialized tools to seal a driveway, including an application brush, broom, squeegee, duct tape and mixing paddle. Use degreasers or liquid driveway cleaners to get rid of tree sap or motor oil on the surface. Sealing it your-self should only cost about $100 or so, according to homeim-provement experts. Individual containers vary in price, depending on whether you select a premium product with higher-end stabilizers and resins. Applying the sealer only takes a few hours on a typical driveway. The time-consuming part is actually in preparation, with cleaning, prepping and filling in cracks.

AVOIDING THE PITFALLS

Don’t rely on the sealer to fill in cracks in the driveway, since it’s not designed for that purpose. Clean and prep everything before you start,

because sealants can’t attach to a dirty surface. You’ll end up having to redo the whole project. Properly stir the sealer before use to ensure that its resins and stabilizers have the proper consistency. Discuss which applicator to use with a pro, either at your local hardware store or home-improvement center. Finally, be aware of how the weather could impact your project. Temps should be above 50 degrees, both day and night, for the sealant to properly cure. Very high temps will lead to faster drying times and a less effective seal — and rain, of course, will simply wash it all away.
