Officials nix idea to demand state aid, teacher evaluation reforms in exchange for tests BY BarBara Donlon

Comsewogue officials have sealed their lips on a proposal not to give state exams to students this year. Both Facebook and the Port Jefferson Station Teachers Association website were buzzing last week, as school board members and residents discussed a proposed resolution saying the board would “seriously consider not administering the New York State standardized [English language arts] and math exams in grades 3-8, and the science exam in grades 4 and 8.” The board of education had encouraged parents to attend its workshop on March 26 and speak about the state’s testing system. But just hours before the meeting, the district went silent, and Superintendent Joe Rella and board members said legal counsel had advised them not to discuss the issue. The matter did

not come up at the board’s business meeting a few days later, on March 30, either. According to the previously proposed resolution, the board takes issue with the state’s current education aid levels and teacher evaluation policies, and with the education reforms Gov. Andrew Cuomo brought forward this year, one of which would increase the influence of student test scores on a teacher’s evaluation. The resolution says that the Comsewogue school board would consider not administering the state tests unless Cuomo (D) and state legislators “establish a fair and equitable state aid funding formula … so [schools] can provide for the educational needs of every child” and stop weighing student test scores so heavily in teacher and administrator evaluations. Father is not giving up Needs help funding daughter’s care after near drowning By Elana Glowatz

A smile, a swallow or a step mean a lot to Rob Marianetti. It was not long ago that his daughter was unresponsive, following a bathtime incident, and doctors told him there was no hope she would get better. But Marianetti isn’t giving up on Kayla, and coming up on her third birthday she can make some sounds and move her arms and legs. “I’ve been on a mission to get my

daughter back,” he said. When she was 17 months old, while Marianetti was at work — for Setauketbased Hurricane Tree Experts — Kayla was having a bath in her Port Jefferson Station home and was left unattended for eight minutes, the father said. She was found floating and unresponsive. Marianetti rushed to the hospital to see Kayla while doctors were working on her. He said he was trying to get into the room with her and was banging on a door to the point where a police officer had to intervene. He learned a few weeks later, he said, that his daughter came back to life while he was banging. “She was blue and she was done. She was done — and she came back.” Kayla spent time at St. Charles Hospital and Stony Brook University Hospital, and Marianetti and his wife — who is no longer “in the picture,” he said — got the little girl started on different therapies right away, so she would not deteriorate. The whole time Kayla was in the hospital, Marianetti never left her side, the father’s aunt, Susan Calvi, said: “Slept there every day.” Out of all the nation’s experts Marianetti saw, he said, just one, neurologist Dr. Chris Sinclair at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital, encouraged him to fight.

Sinclair said he’s seen a similar case of brain injury before, in which a child was perhaps even worse off than Kayla in the beginning but after a couple of years was walking and talking. “So I’ve seen it before but I also know how flexible, in a sense, the brain of a young child is.” Sinclair explained that there are connections between brain cells that allow KAYLA continued on page A16

the Greenway trail runs between Port Jefferson Station and Setauket.

Police on trail patrol

Days after human skeletal remains were discovered near the Greenway Trail, a Suffolk County police officer assured local residents that he would be patrolling the hiking and biking path in the warmer weather. Officer William Gibaldi said at the March 25 meeting of the Port Jefferson Station/Terryville Civic Association that he had just driven the trail, which runs between Setauket and Port Jefferson Station, the day before in a police car with another officer. “When it warms up a little, we’re going to be riding our bikes through there, at least two or three times a week,” he said. “We’re gonna be in there.” On March 22, around 4 p.m., skeletal remains were spotted close to the 3.5mile trail at its stretch off of Gnarled Hollow Road. Police are investigating the human remains, and officials have not yet released the sex of the deceased

or the person’s cause of death. It was also unclear when the person died and how long the body had been in that location. The Greenway Trail, which opened in 2009 and originally ran from Gnarled Hollow Road to Sheep Pasture Road, was recently extended by two miles — one mile on each end — to bring it all the way to Limroy Lane in Setauket and close to Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station. While construction was largely completed in late 2013, the community officially opened the trail with a ceremony in early 2014. “The inspector of the precinct, he wants us on that trail all the time anyway, so we’re gonna be on that trail a lot,” Gibaldi said. “You’ll see us in there, hanging out, riding around or … driving a car.” — Elana Glowatz

Comsewogue residents join ranks fighting casino By Elana Glowatz

Local civic members are going all-in to fight a proposed gambling facility in Brookhaven Town. After New York voters passed a referendum in 2013 that allowed for seven casinos in the state, the Suffolk Regional Off-Track Betting Corporation proposed putting a 1,000-machine casino at the former Brookhaven Multiplex Cinemas in Medford. But town residents, particularly those living in the Medford area, have railed against the project, citing concerns about it causing traffic congestion and promoting crime, drug use and prostitution. The proposal, for a nearly 32-acre site off of the Long Island Expressway near Exit 64, is awaiting approval from the Suffolk County Planning Commission. Delaware North, the company that runs the Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack and Hamburg Gaming in upstate New York, would operate the Medford facility. The local residents who oppose the 1,000 lottery machines, known as video lottery terminals, have found allies in the Port Jefferson Station/Terryville Civic Association. At the group’s March 25 meeting, the members voted to take an official stand against the gambling facil-

ity, upon a suggestion from executive board member Frank Gibbons. The Terryville resident said residents must push their elected officials to derail the casino. “If all of us get united across this entire township and say, ‘You do this and we’re going to vote you all out of office,’ I bet they’ll find a way.” Town officials have said that their hands are tied, and they have no role in choosing where the gambling facility will be built. The town board has hired global law firm Nixon Peabody LLP to issue its own legal opinion on the matter. The town board also approved an anti-casino statement in late January, introduced by Councilman Neil Foley (RBlue Point). “These are blights in a community and serve no purpose in the suburbs,” Councilwoman Jane Bonner (C-Rocky Point) said at the time. The Port Jefferson Station/Terryville civic members voted against a gambling facility being built at the proposed site in Medford or anywhere else in

Brookhaven Town. “Because if it’s not Medford, it could be Bicycle Path,” President Ed Garboski said. “It could be Centereach.” Jeff Napoleon, a Port Jefferson Station resident, said members should authorize the executive board to “to make our feelings known that we’re against this and to

take whatever steps … in any way they deem appropriate. That way as they uncover things, they can take action.” The civic supported that measure, adding it to its vote of opposition to the gambling facility. “This is obviously a complicated issue,” Napoleon said. “A lot of angles to it.”

Budget backs repowering State officials compel LIPA to study local plant upgrades By Elana Glowatz & Rohma aBBas

The Long Island Power Authority must study the area’s aging power plants with an eye toward upgrading the facilities, according to a provision of the next New York State budget. Language that Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) and state legislators have agreed upon requires the utility to “perform an engineering, environmental … and cost feasibility analysis and study” of upgrading — also known as repowering — the plants in Port Jefferson, Northport and Island Park. The focus will be on using more efficient and environmentally friendly technology at the plants. Those three sites have been on shaky ground because they are old and using outdated technology. The Port Jefferson and Northport host communities have feared losing essential property taxes from the plants, which would happen if the plants were to reach the ends of their useful lives without being repowered. “We are extremely proud that our representatives and our lobbying efforts are working toward a repowered plant in [Port Jefferson],” village Mayor Margot Garant said in an email. “We always believed this was the best repurposing of

our site, and in the best interest of the ratepayers of [Long Island].” The utility must begin studying Port Jefferson and Island Park no later than Oct. 1 and must start working on the second study in Northport by October 2018, according to the budget language. The studies must be completed and presented to the LIPA board of trustees and the department of public service no later than 18 months after they begin. LIPA will repower the plants if it determines, based on the studies, “that repowering any such generating facility is in the best interests of its ratepayers and will enhance the authority’s ability to provide a more efficient, reliable and economical supply of electric energy in its service territory, consistent with the goal of improving environmental quality.” Assemblyman Andy Raia (R-East Northport) said the studies “could change the whole tax certiorari issue.” Huntington Town and the NorthportEast Northport school district have been battling LIPA over the value of that property, with the utility arguing the plant is grossly overassessed and filing to be reimbursed for taxes overpaid as a result. Town Supervisor Frank Petrone (D) has extended an offer to LIPA to freeze its

tax assessment if it repowers Northport. “Northport and East Northport are looking down the barrel of a gun,” Raia said Tuesday, “and if they repowered Northport that whole case would go away.” Sen. Ken LaValle (R-Port Jefferson) said in a statement that the study requirement will be included in the state budget “since LIPA did not follow through on their [previous] promises” to complete economic feasibility studies on the aging plants. PSEG Long Island, the private utility

that has taken over management of LIPA, was on board with the repowering studies this week. “After careful study last year, we determined that there was no need for additional generation on Long Island until, at least, 2024,” PSEG Long Island spokesman Jeff Weir said in an email. “We wholeheartedly embrace this process because all we want is to implement the lowest cost and most reliable solutions for our customers on Long Island and in the Rockaways.”

Bellone focuses on Connect Long Island, water quality County executive delivers annual State of the County By Julianne CuBa

At his fourth State of the County address, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone began by ensuring the county government and public that he has never been more optimistic about the current state of the region and its future. At the William H. Rogers Legislative Building in Hauppauge on March 26, Bellone (D) also took time commending the county legislature for successfully and efficiently reducing government by more than 10 percent — an initiative that will save Suffolk County taxpayers more than $100 million a year. The county executive announced that when he took office three years ago, the unemployment rate for Suffolk County stood at 8.2 percent. As of the end of 2014, it stands at 4.2 percent. However, Bellone continued, “I’m not here to talk about where we are today. I am much more interested in talking about where we are going and what the future could look like.” In order to combat what Bellone said he considers the fundamental issue of our time — a two-decade trend of losing young, qualified and educated people to other regions of the county — he pointed

to the county’s economic development plan, Connect Long Island. “We cannot reach our economic potential, we cannot build a more prosperous future, if we are not a region that can attract and retain the young, highknowledge, high-skill workers necessary to build an innovative economy,” he said. Connect Long Island will make progress on the five crucial issues that are driving young people away, which, according to Bellone include high costs and a lack of transportation options, quality affordable rentals, affordable housing in desired environments and high-paying jobs. “We build walkable, transit-oriented downtowns that have strong, public transportation links to one another and to universities, research centers, job centers and parks and open space. Effectively, what Connect LI will do is to build a quality of life ecosystem that will be attractive to young people,” he said. Unfortunately, Bellone said, the lack of sewage systems in many of Suffolk County’s downtown areas — which are critical parts of the region’s future — is limiting the opportunity for growth. The county’s sewage problem impacts not only the regions economic develop-

The water quality issue was one of the three major problems on which Bellone focused. “We have 360,000 unsewered homes in Suffolk County — that is more than the entire state of New Jersey. Comsewogue could increase staff next school year By BarBara Donlon

assistant Superintendent for Business Susan Casali explained the district’s budget proposal last week.

Comsewogue School District hopes to adopt a budget that increases staff while staying within the state-imposed limit on its tax increase. Assistant Superintendent for Business Susan Casali explained during a school board workshop on March 26 that the budget proposal would also reduce the district’s dependency on its reserves and make security improvements. The budget was originally proposed at that workshop to be $85.6 million, or a 2.7 percent increase over the current year’s budget, funded in part through an expected increase in state aid. But after preliminary state aid numbers were released on Tuesday, showing Comsewogue receiving less than the $2 million bump it expected, the district is changing its budget proposal — Casali said in an email that the plan is to slash the budget by $400,000. “Our overall goal is to stay under the property tax cap,” Casali said last week,

referring to New York State’s cap on how much municipalities and school districts can increase their tax levy each year. Comsewogue may raise its by 2.2 percent next year, and the budget proposal meets that cap. Under the budget plan, the district would add a librarian, so that each school in the district would have one, and Comsewogue would replace its deans, who also have teaching responsibilities, with assistant principals to create more flexibility. At John F. Kennedy Middle School, where there is already one assistant principal, the plan is to replace the part-time dean with a full-time assistant principal. At Comsewogue High School, the dean will become two assistant principals. The district is also hoping to add assistant athletic coaches into the mix, for student safety and to help develop a stronger athletic program. In the past, those roles were cut for financial reasons. Other improvements are proposed for the district’s facilities — according to Casali, Comsewogue’s wireless infra-

structure hasn’t been updated in more than 10 years, and some classrooms need to be refurbished. Officials also hope to add cameras and other upgrades to the security system, based on recommendations from a security study that was completed last year. While the budget has not been finalized, Superintendent Joe Rella said, “Whatever budget is put up [for a public vote] in May will be under the tax cap.” Also on the ballot will be a proposition on transportation, to add bus service for 38 JFK Middle School students who currently walk to school. The students live within a half-mile of the building, which keeps them off the buses, but the heavy snow covering sidewalks this winter led the kids to walk in the street and spurred the transportation proposal. The extra bus riders will not add cost to the taxpayer, as the district would reconfigure current bus routes to accommodate the kids. The school board will adopt a budget at its meeting on April 13.

cost-efficient options for Suffolk County residents,” Bellone said. Bellone announced that with the help of Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), the county’s state and federal partners, and U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), he was able to secure $383 million for one of the largest investments in clean water infrastructure in more than 40 years — the Reclaim Our Water Initiative. Legislator and Minority Leader

Kevin McCaffrey (R) said that he agrees with everything the county executive said in regard to economic development and improving drinking water. However, he added that the county’s debt must be cut and the legislature needs increased oversight. “We must ask ourselves if we are going to control the irresponsible and reckless spending and borrowing, we must become more focused on the county’s ever-increasing debt,” McCaffrey said. “We must ask ourselves if we want to throw debt on the backs of our children and our grandchildren. It’s time to cut up the credit cards and learn how to live within our means.”

Rella has green light for four more years By BarBara Donlon

Comsewogue Superintendent Joe Rella will be staying with the district for at least another four years, as his contract has been extended through August 2020. At Monday’s board of education meeting, the board approved the amended contract, which includes an $8,000 salary increase in 2015-16 for the five-year superintendent. It will be the first raise for Rella, who took the helm in September 2010 at a $200,000 salary. In addition to the salary increase, Rella will be contributing 17 percent to his health benefits. While that number is

slightly lower than in previous years, the district switched health insurance companies, resulting in lower premiums. The contract does not absolutely define Rella’s salary and benefits from 2016-17 and beyond — the board must meet with him and discuss those points each year. Shortly after voting on the contract, the board thanked the superintendent, who was once principal of the high school, for his hard work and dedication to the district. Board President John Swenning said that Rella has been a blessing to the Comsewogue community. “You can’t go anywhere that he is not recognized by students and parents.”

2015 marks the 38th year Matt’s One Stop has served Sound Beach and the surrounding area. Through those years there have been many changes both to this tight-knit community and to Matt’s One Stop. Sound Beach has evolved from a primarily summer cottage community to a thriving area of year-round homes and growing businesses. The original Matt’s One Stop located on New York Ave. is the mechanical repair shop and Gulf gas station. The building has been expanded over the years to accommodate new equipment needed to properly service modern autos and trucks. The extension to the repair shop soon became inadequate and a second building across the street was purchased to house the collision portion of the business. That building has also been expanded to allow space for a modern down draft spray booth and frame straightening equipment. Owners Geri and Jay Card come from long backgrounds in the auto repair industry. Geri’s father owned shops in Oceanside and Rockville Centre. He was also an original partner in Matt’s One Stop. Jay’s father owned shops in Brooklyn. Geri and Jay attend to the business while long time Sound Beach resident Kevin Dallon manages the repair shop assisted by Brock and staffed by Cameron, James O and James B. Matt Card [the business’ namesake] manages the collision shop assisted by Jenn and Antionette in the office and Matt B., Larry, Mike, Paulie, Tyler and Chris C. in the shop. The technicians at both shops hold many ASE and I-Car certifications and are continually attending classes to stay abreast of the latest innovations in the industry, including Hybrids. The repair shop offers computerized engine diagnostics and repair, Hunter wheel alignments, NYS Emission Inspections, complete front-end and brake service and computerized wheel balancing. We also do small engine repair and service. Call and ask Kevin or Jay about our very competitive prices on all brands of tires, especially GoodYear. The collision shop has computerized color matching and Laser measured unibody frame repair. Matt’s One Stop is a direct repair shop for Allstate, Geico and Liberty Mutual insurance companies and the quality of our work is recognized by all major insurers. Although there have been many changes at Matt’s One Stop over 36 years, our commitment to performing quality repairs at fair prices and our commitment to serving our customers with respect will always be our primary objectives. Matt’s One Stop offers Gulf gasoline, propane barbeque tank refills, Carco insurance photo inspections and 24 hr towing. Matt’s One Stop is open from 7AM to 6PM Monday thru Friday and 7AM to 3PM on Saturday. We are closed Sunday.

State lawmakers fight for safer child products A new bill protecting children from toxic chemicals is making its way through the state Assembly, as elected officials work to keep the chemicals out of children’s products. The bill — commonly known as the Child Safe Products Act — would empower New York State to identify and phase out dangerous chemicals in products marketed to kids, lawmakers said. State Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket) helped craft the legislation and has been pushing it forward with the hope of keeping young people safe from what they cannot see. If the legislation is passed, the state would compile a list of high-concern chemicals made up of those known to cause health problems such as cancer, learning and developmental disorders, asthma and more. Then, a list of priority chemicals used in children’s products will be drafted for disclosure. “This bill addresses issues of poisonous products for children,” Englebright said. “It’s very important to protect the children. And that’s what I intend to do.” The makers of children’s products would also be required to report their use of priority chemicals in their merchandise after a year, and phase out their use of such chemicals three years later. Suffolk County Legislator William

State assemblyman Steve Englebright is putting pressure on manufacturers to keep harmful chemicals out of child products sold in new york.

“Doc” Spencer (D-Centerport) said legislation like this is important because there is always a need to prevent innocent children from being exposed to such harmful chemicals like arsenic, mercury, cadmium and formaldehyde. “Kids are more vulnerable and more likely to put things in their mouth,” Spencer said. “Almost any toy could potentially have toxic chemicals.” He also said toxic chemicals are found in many children’s products, such as

clothes, dolls and toys. He said they can be in found things such as paint on a button or a bracelet a child wears. According to Englebright, there are some 84,000 chemicals on the market today. The federal law that was supposed to protect against them — the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976 — “is a very weak law and has never been updated,” the lawmaker said. The assemblyman also said he feels a bill like this is important for everyone in

the state as it sets the standards manufacturers would be held to. “We all benefit when children are protected from poorly regulated toxic chemicals that have the potential to harm development, cause illness and impair learning,” Englebright said. “I think it’s very important to get this bill to the governor’s desk.” Spencer also said while he does support the bill, there should be guidelines and parameters set, as there is the ability to detect parts per million, billion and even trillion. He said it is unnecessary to be overly restrictive because something at a certain number of parts per billion or trillion may not be harmful. Late last year, a press conference was held in Hauppauge to show parents the toxins present in certain items geared toward kids. While many of the toys at the conference had toxic chemicals in them, such a Hot Wheels cars or dresses bought in Long Island stores, there are toys on the market that are manufactured without them. “A lot of times the effects of these toxic substances aren’t seen right away. But the impact lasts for a lifetime,” Spencer said at the December conference. When asked why certain toys have chemicals and others don’t, he said some manufacturers may be unaware of the chemicals present and others could possibly use them for commercial reasons.

the cells to communicate with one another, and in Kayla those have become damaged. But those connections can be regrown in a developing brain. “When someone’s so young, [the future] is a lot brighter than it would be for someone who is an adult because the brain is still developing,” Sinclair said. “I think the sky’s the limit for her.” Kayla has multiple therapy appointments each day, whether it’s hyperbaric therapy, which involves putting her in an oxygen-rich environment; physical therapy, to move her toward sitting up, standing and walking; vision therapy, as neurological issues have made her legally blind, even though her eyes themselves are fine; or speech therapy, which is used both to

teach her to communicate and to eat on her own. “By me doing all this stuff, it’s friggin’ working, man,” Marianetti said. Kayla has stood up, laughed, swallowed a small amount of pudding and taken a few steps. “Now remember, she couldn’t move a year ago. … I have hope.” One big hurdle for Marianetti, however, is money. He’s gone through his savings, he said, and Kayla’s therapy appointments cost $8,000 a month. Then there’s other medical costs, as well as living expenses like food, diapers and electricity. The treatments are expensive, the dad said, but “how can I not continue what I’m doing when she’s making progress?” He set up a fundraising page, at www.gofundme.com/ n19qgc, to ask for help. As of Wednesday morning, the fund had reached $18,000. His goal is to have Kayla at

a community member said the announcement before the meeting that officials would no longer discuss the matter had surprised her. “I really can’t tell you why right now,” Rella responded. “We’ve been advised not to comment about it.” According to state education department spokeswoman Jeanne Beattie, the federal government requires the standardized tests and there is no state law or regulation that allows a school official to refuse to administer the tests or a parent to refuse that a child take the test. “If a member of a board of education

or school superintendent takes official action by refusing to administer a required state assessment, the responsible party would be at risk of removal from office by the commissioner of education pursuant to Education Law,” Beattie said in an email. According to Article 7 of the state Education Law, the commissioner may, following a hearing, remove a school officer, including a school board member or a district administrator, if it has been “proved to his satisfaction” that the person willfully disobeyed “any decision, order, rule or regulation of the regents or of the commissioner of education.” The commissioner may also withhold state aid from any district for such actions.

There’s a lack of experience for a lot of these players. Some of them picked up the stick for the first time last year or this year, so it’s been difficult, but it’s been fun.” The Royals had something to smile about when Scarda scored again with

10:44 remaining in the game, off a pass across the field that he whipped into the back of the cage. Babylon scored again but Port Jefferson sophomore midfielder Chandler Sciara countered with a goal of his own. With five seconds remaining, Port Jefferson freshman midfielder Thomas Mark passed the ball from the far left side to sophomore attack Brian Mark, his older brother, who was in front of the goal and managed to lob the ball in overhead to bring the final score to 14-4. With the loss, Port Jefferson moves to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in League IV, having lost the first game of the season to Bellport, 16-3, but bouncing back with a 16-6 win over Southampton/Ross in its second matchup. “We definitely could’ve pressured harder, we definitely could’ve been playing a little tougher against them — we didn’t come out with as much fire as they did — but next week’s a new week and we’ll see them again,” junior midfielder and co-captain Max Scandale said. “We just need a little bit of practice, a little bit of time and we’ll definitely get there.”

Each petition must be directed to the District Clerk, must be signed by at least twenty-six (26) qualified voters of the District, must state the name and residence of the candidate, as well as the name and residence of each resident signing the petition. en-owned businesses and HUD Section 3 businesses to participate in the bidding process.

FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that a qualified voter whose ability to appear personally at the polling place is substantially impaired by reason of permanent illness or physical disability and whose registration record has been marked “permanently disabled” by the Board of Elections pursuant to the provisions of the Election Law shall be entitled to receive an absentee ballot pursuant to the provisions of the Education Law without making separate application for such absentee ballot.

The customer is not always right

As a community newspaper, we value reader feedback and welcome any and all letters to the editor on the stories that compel our neighbors. But we received one letter in particular this past week that we felt warranted a larger editorial response. Last week, we ran a story on Suffolk County Legislator Kara hahn (d-Setauket) spearheading a new law that aims to more aggressively address domestic violence by empowering victims —connecting them with agencies and offering up a self-assessment questionnaire — and analyzing offenders. The bill was approved without a single “nay” in the Legislature, showing the county’s commitment to the issue. on Monday, we opened up an anonymous letter addressed to the publisher of this newspaper, responding to our domestic violence reporting. “Women can be opportunists,” the letter started. “if a man just pushes his girlfriend or paramour or even his wife, the next thing you know, she comes to court with a brace on her neck and bandages and a story that complains how she was pushed down a flight of stairs and strangled.” our initial reaction to this argument was scoffs and rolling eyes. (And why is this man pushing his partner to begin with?) While some people may have valid concerns over the consequences of tighter domestic violence laws, our anonymous reader’s remarks underscored the very same symptomatic problem, which affects both women and men, that hahn’s legislation is looking to end in Suffolk County. “No wonder guys go off the deep end and murder their so-called girlfriends. if i could not see my children, i would be mad as well. enough to murder — possibly,” the secret letter writer said about custody battles. “Women are so thickheaded, unreasonable and vindictive, especially where money is concerned, that the greed of a woman scorned cannot be fathomed and we, the dads, husbands, boyfriends, are left out in the cold with no recourse.” The writer asked that this newspaper “do something about these issues.” That is why we chose to dedicate this week’s editorial to his letter — to do something when we are confronted with a disgusting diatribe that condones violence against a group of people. We hope the county law, still in its infancy, helps shift the train of thought of those like this reader. Thank you for the letter.

To The ediTor: Yik Yak may sound like a candy but it’s not. it’s a pernicious new social media app that has transformed college campuses into middle school cafeterias populated by mean boys and girls using demeaning, homophobic, racist and sexually explicit language to spout their anonymous vitriol. Why such meanness? When did free expression become a weapon? The ancient Greeks believed that the purpose of education was to inculcate society’s ideals in its citizens. in college, i was given a historical and global perspective on the world that made me a more thoughtful and altruistic person. As a high school english teacher, i used literature to help my stu-

dents to explore their own lives. We discussed man’s humanity and connected characters and themes to current events as well as to the past. isn’t this the intrinsic value of our classic books? To help students understand more about themselves and the world in which they live. To make them better citizens. have we lost that connection? Can we trace the roots of this to our own schools, or to the fierce competition and stressful test taking that we expose our young adults to every day? When did our teachers, who should be helpful guides, and our fellow students, who should share the journey, become antagonists? When i was a teenager, a tutor told me that a fellow student in her physics class refused to help her

understand a problem because it would “screw up the curve.” i was appalled. i would love to assign that bad boy to a study group with the understanding that his grade would reflect the average of the group, not the individual. i fear that the competitive atmosphere of our school systems is poisonous — not creating a better education but rather an atmosphere of nastiness, aggression and bullying. For our students, has the test score become who they are? empathy, respect and cooperation — these are the qualities we should instill in our students. And, yes, taking responsibility for one’s words and actions, not hiding behind the white sheet or anonymous strokes of our keyboards. Kerri Glynn Setauket

Opt out or opt in? To The ediTor: The New York State english language arts and math tests are fast approaching, and parents have a choice to make. if you have children in grades three through eight, here are some things to consider as you make your own decision about opting out or opting in: 1. The tests provide no diagnostic information to teachers, students or parents. Teachers never get to see which questions their students get right and wrong. 2. The tests don’t assess many of the things we consider very important, such as the ability to work with others cooperatively, critical thinking, creative thinking and complex problem solving. 3. high-stakes testing puts the emphasis on a single test rather

than on teaching and learning from September through June. This will lead to lots of class time spent on test prep and teaching kids to be good test-takers rather than lifelong learners. 4. high-stakes testing narrows the curriculum. This is a big one. Subjects other than english and math will be marginalized and/or eliminated. This is already beginning to happen in New York State. 5. high-stakes testing adds unhealthy stress to young children. There is plenty of stress waiting for our kids as they get older. Why stress them unnecessarily at 8 years old? 6. We’re testing kids on a year’s worth of curriculum in April because the state needs so much time to correct the exams and generate its data. i want my children to be engaged in meaningful learning

activities in March and April, not preparing for and taking a state test. it’s possible to have great test scores and a lousy education, and that is what will happen if we continue to emphasize these state tests over authentic, meaningful teaching and learning. The Common Core Learning Standards themselves are not the problem. The problem is highstakes, high-stress, overtesting, and we need to separate the two. Most teachers have embraced the standards. Let them test the kids as they see fit. in the long run, and if we look at the big picture, enough students opting out will force Albany’s hand and return educational decisions to the village, the district, the school, the teacher and your child. A call to create a new holiday

D. None of the above by DaNiel DuNaief

vtimes@tbrnewspapers.com

I

have a modest proposal: How about a new holiday, either in each school or in each town, every year? I’m not talking about taking any more time off from school or interrupting the flow of work, especially in a year when snow, ice and recordbreaking blizzards that never happened upset our busy schedules. I’d like to suggest, rather, that we celebrate, recognize or

mark the occasion for a different moment every year. We could create such a holiday some day in June, when classes are winding down and we’re just about to kick off the start of the summer. Every year, Americans stop to recognize 9/11 in September. It’s a somber occasion and a chance to reflect on who we lost and what might have been. It’s also an opportunity to recognize the unimaginable bravery of those who did whatever they could to save strangers, friends and fellow New Yorkers and Americans. Perhaps, one year, we might also recognize all the medical miracles that have made lives possible. I’ll never forget the day a colleague of mine at Bloomberg picked up the phone and his face went white. Seemingly unable to verbalize the terror in his mind, he grabbed his jacket and sprinted out of the room. His sudden and panicked motion created considerable concern from his colleagues. As he told our editor the next

morning in a barely audible voicemail, his wife went into premature labor and, less than an hour later, delivered a baby girl who weighed close to 1 pound. For weeks, whenever he came to work, he seemed to look past us, searching for any kind of help, spiritual or otherwise, for his daughter’s fragile life. After several months, she grew enough to improve her prospects for survival. We knew things were getting better because we heard the welcome return of laughter from our friend. We also saw him exhale for the first time in months, loosening and relaxing the taut muscles in his chest. Perhaps, one school might find the names of the doctors and scientists who improved the treatment and care for premature babies who had considerably poorer prognoses 50 or 100 years earlier. We might also pause to recognize those working in fertility clinics or in reproductive research, who have made it possible

for couples having trouble conceiving to celebrate the marvel of their child. Maybe we could celebrate the considerable achievements of scientists who have helped prevent an HIV diagnosis from becoming a death sentence. When Magic Johnson revealed that he was HIV positive, many of us probably never imagined we’d see him cheering for his Michigan State basketball team to make it to the Final Four in 2015. It is through remarkable medical breakthroughs, incredible dedication and a desire to defeat diseases like cancer and AIDS that we can extend the quantity and quality of our lives and the lives of our friends and family. Some of these achievements and lifesaving discoveries wouldn’t have been possible without the insights and inspiration of scientists, researchers and doctors on Long Island. Perhaps we can take a mo-

Perhaps we could use a day to recognize those who truly fight for us.

ment to appreciate and acknowledge the guiding hand and valuable contributions religious leaders make to us. Bringing us together and encouraging us through our battles elevates us when we’re down. We see headlines about people who take lives and make poor decisions. Perhaps, we could use a day to recognize those who, to borrow a phrase from just about every political ad, truly “fight for us.” And maybe, by acknowledging these achievements, we inspire the next generation. A Happy Easter memory from New Zealand

between you and me by leah S. DuNaief

vtimes@tbrnewspapers.com

A

lmost 20 years ago this Easter, I left the comforts of home to go on a tour 10,000 miles away. The adventure was originally billed as a trip to Australia and New Zealand, but the tour company representative called to tell me about a month in advance that New Zealand was going to be eliminated from the itinerary to shorten the trip — and we would just visit Australia. I was terrifically disappointed and made

my feelings known. After all, how often did I plan to be in the neighborhood? As long as I was making that long flight, I was intent on touring both countries. Since I knew the tour owner personally, I carried on about my disappointment long and hard. Finally he called with a proposal. While the official visit was now only to Australia, there was a small group of six people, whom he knew well, who were indeed going on their own tour of New Zealand. One of their group had been stationed there during World War II and had put together a pre-tour visit. At my friend’s suggestion, they were now prepared to include me. Did I want to go with them? “Would I be like a seventh wheel,” I asked. “No,” he assured me, “they would really like you to join them.” “Did they all know each other beforehand,” I worried. “Yes, the three couples were quite good friends,” he explained, “and lots of fun.” I worried more. “Here, take their phone numbers and call them —

you can decide for yourself,” he said as he ended the call, glad to have finally solved the problem. I did call one of them, a hasty call because she was running between two appointments, but she did encourage me to come. They were leaving from three different corners of the United States: Seattle, Los Angeles and Sarasota. So I agreed to meet them on the South Island in Christchurch, the second largest city of New Zealand, in a specific hotel lobby on Easter Sunday at 7 a.m. I can only marvel today at my daring. The drama intensified. Before I got on the plane to begin my trip, I came down with a nasty cold. By the time I got to Auckland, New Zealand’s gateway city on the North Island at 6 a.m. I had a temperature of 102 degrees and felt rotten. Fortunately I had included a Z-Pak antibiotic in my luggage, and I swallowed down the first dose on the bus to the motel. That bus ride went on forever, seeming to stop at every corner. When I finally arrived at the motel and got

into bed, one thought occurred to me: Everyone in the world who cared about me enough to take care of me was on the other side of the world. With that, I drifted off to sleep. When I awoke in the afternoon and wandered outside, looking for a place to eat, I was surprised to find all stores tightly closed and the streets almost empty Finally catching up to a pedestrian, I asked why. “Everything is closed on Good Friday!” he exclaimed, looking at me as if I had just dropped down from Mars. Which indeed is how I felt. “Only the tourist shops and the movies are open today,” he added, sensing that I needed further help. I took a bus to the center of the city and chatted up the bored clerks in all the tourist shops I could find. Auckland, a clean and beautiful city on the water, felt the size of Boston. Then, when the tourist places closed, I found the city’s equivalent of Times Square and went to see “The English Patient.” There weren’t many people in the cin-

But it was a gorgeously filmed movie, even if I didn’t understand the plot entirely, which I attributed to my illness. The next day I flew to Christchurch, a city that could have been located in rural England, and at the appointed hour on Easter morning I met my six traveling companions, who looked a little nervous too. Fortunately we hit it off, had a fabulous trip through the South Island, from glaciers to beaches, saw about 60 million sheep and have been friends ever since. It was a Happy Easter memory and I wish you one this year too.
