Old Mill Creek has been an unusual sight lately for those who are used to seeing the narrow Port Jefferson waterway choked with vegetation. A contractor recently began working on the troubled creek, uprooting invasive trees and plants a few weeks ago and clearing the view to passersby. This week, workers were standing in the stretch of the stream behind Village Hall with an excavator at its bank. They are restoring the eastern half of the creek, which discharges into Port Jefferson Harbor.

Port Jefferson Village has a permit from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to install rock supports at the creek, replace invasive plants with freshwater species, remove built-up sediment that blocks water flow, install filters to improve water quality and repair a pipe known as a culvert that channels the creek under Barnum Avenue. That culvert repair will alleviate some flooding issues downtown, because the pipe is largely blocked up and causes problems during high tide and storms when the creek swells.

A goal of the project is to improve water quality in the creek and, indirectly, in the harbor. Last month the village hired Holbrookbased contractor G & M Earth Moving Inc. to perform the restoration work and will use a DEC grant to cover threequarters of the cost. Old Mill Creek starts near Longfellow Lane and Brook Road, passes the Caroline Avenue ball field and goes under Barnum. From there it goes past Village Hall and wraps around Schafer’s restaurant before running under West Broadway and into the harbor.

Over the years, invasive species, flooding and pollution have beaten up the creek. Hazardous chemicals that had been illegally dumped over many years at the former Lawrence Aviation Industries property, an aircraft-parts manufacturer in Port Jefferson Station, traveled down-gradient into the creek. Beyond the current restoration project, the village has further plans for improving and protecting the waterway, including doing similar work on the half of it west of Barnum Avenue and reducing stormwater runoff in its entire 517-acre watershed area.

A state judge is ordering Stony Brook University to give its two lab chimpanzees a chance at freedom. State Supreme Court Justice Barbara Jaffe called on the university to appear in court on May 27 and justify why it should not have to release its laboratory apes, Hercules and Leo, to a Florida sanctuary. The decision came 16 months after Florida-based animal advocacy group the Nonhuman Rights Project filed a lawsuit in Suffolk County seeking to declare chimps as legal persons. The judge ordered the school to show cause on behalf of the animals, to which SBU President Dr. Samuel L. Stanley Jr. and the university must respond with legally sufficient reasons for detaining them. The order did not necessarily declare the chimpanzees were legal persons, but did open the door for that possibility if the university does not convince the court otherwise. “The university does not comment on the specifics of litigation, and awaits the court’s full consideration on this matter,” said Lauren Sheprow, spokeswoman for Stony Brook University. The NhRP welcomed the move in a press release issued April 20. “These cases are novel and this is the first time that an order to show cause has [been] issued,” the group said in a statement. “We are grateful for an opportunity to litigate the issue of the freedom of the chimpanzees, Hercules and Leo, at the ordered May hearing.” The NhRP had asked the court that Hercules and Leo be freed and released

into the care of Save the Chimps, a Florida sanctuary in Fort Pierce. There, they would spend the rest of their lives primarily on one of 13 artificial islands on a large lake along with 250 other chimpanzees in an environment as close to that of their natural home in Africa as can be found in North America, the group said. The court first ordered the school to show cause and writ of habeas corpus — a command to produce the captive person and justify their detention — but struck out “and writ of habeas corpus” on April 21, one day after releasing the initial order, making it more of an administrative move simply prompting the university to defend why it detains the animals. In an earlier press release from 2013, the NhRP said the chimpanzee plaintiffs are “self-aware” and “autonomous” and therefore should have the same rights as humans. The two plaintiffs, Hercules and Leo, are currently being used in a locomotion research experiment in SBU’s Department of Anatomical Sciences. Sheprow confirmed in 2013 that researchers in that department were studying the chimpanzees at SBU’s Division of Laboratory Animal Resources, which is accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International and overseen by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The NhRP’s initial lawsuit also defended another set of chimpanzees from upstate New York, Tommy and Kiko. State Supreme Court Justice W. Gerard Asher of Riverhead initially declined to sign the NhRP’s petition for a writ of habeas corpus in 2013, which the group unsuccessfully appealed soon after.

Suffolk County bills to protect veteran valor By Rohma aBBas

A roomful of veterans and lawmakers gathered in Northport last week to salute the signing of two Suffolk County bills aimed at protecting veterans and the public against acts of stolen valor. County Executive Steve Bellone (D) signed the legislation, which was spearheaded by Legislator William “Doc” Spencer (D-Centerport), into law. One of the bills makes it illegal for individuals to fraudulently represent themselves as decorated veterans to members of the public in order to solicit donations or obtain money, property or other benefits. The law makes it a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and/or one year in prison. The second law imposes stiffer requirements on veteran nonprofit groups that solicit donations in Suffolk County. Such groups will be required to disseminate financial information to the public about how their fundraising dollars are being spent. The laws were born out of a joint effort of many veterans, Spencer said — namely John Cooney, the commander of Northport American Legion Post 694, and Tom Kehoe, a former Northport Village Board member. Both men held Spencer’s “feet to the fire” to get the legislation drafted, particularly after what Cooney described as instances in Huntington Town in which people fraudulently represented them-

selves as veterans for personal gain. “The needs of our veterans and the desire to give on part of our residents can create vulnerability, as organizations and individuals have sought to take advantage to profit from these circumstances,” Spencer told an audience of veterans at the Northport American Legion. “The two bills that we sign here today will work in conjunction to ensure our charitable dollars go where they should go — to support our veterans.”

Other local leaders attended the signing, including Northport Village Police Chief Ric Bruckenthal. The chief lost his son, Nathan Bruckenthal, a U.S. Coast Guardsman, in a terrorist suicide bombing in Iraq 11 years ago last week. “Why are we here today?” Bellone, who is also a veteran, said. “Because the notion that someone would step forward and put themselves out as a veteran of this country in order to raise money to benefit themselves is an absolute disgrace and it is

something that we cannot under any circumstances tolerate.” Nonprofit groups seeking to solicit donations on behalf of veterans already had to register with the county’s Veterans Services Agency before doing so, and that process will be enhanced under the new legislation. Those groups now have to submit information on how the funds they raise will benefit veterans, and they need to provide a slew of new documents, including federal and state tax returns and the names of the group’s board of directors. The Office of the Suffolk County Comptroller would work with the Veterans Services Agency to review the information, and the agency would ultimately decide whether to approve or deny an application. Individuals will be barred from fraudulently representing records of military service and must provide proof of veteran status in the form of credentials or identification. The Veterans Services Agency can deny or revoke a group’s registration certificate if it’s deemed that someone from the group violated the federal Stolen Valor Act. “This is a great example of veterans coming together and working with our committed legislators to provide and protect,” Cooney said. “To protect the valor and the integrity of those who have served. And to ensure that funds go to those veterans that legitimately need assistance.”

Napkin-thin defense Police said a 22-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station was arrested on April 26 and charged with assault, recklessly causing physical injury. Police said that at about 12:53 a.m. at Schafer’s restaurant on West Broadway in Port Jefferson, the man threw a napkin dispenser at someone, resulting in a laceration on the victim’s right eye that required medical attention. Streetfighter A 29-year-old man from Port Jefferson was arrested on Main Street on April 21 at about 6:55 p.m. and charged with disorderly conduct, fighting/violent behavior and resisting arrest. Police said the man was fighting with another man in the middle of the street. Drug dealer caught Police arrested a 28-year-old man from Centereach on Middle Country Road on April 23 and charged him with third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance. He was also charged with four counts of criminal possession of a narcotic drug, four counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell and one count of criminal possession of a controlled substance. Police said the man was found that day at about 1:37 p.m. in possession of heroin. He was arraigned the next day and held in lieu of posting a $20,000 cash or $40,000 bail bond, according to court records.

Police investigate fire and gunshot wound By Elana Glowatz

Police say a man shot himself on Tuesday afternoon and his Coram house was intentionally set on fire. According to the Suffolk County Police Department, a passerby found the man slumped over in his vehicle at Tanglewood Park on Howe Road in Coram and called police to the scene shortly after 5 p.m. Homicide Squad detectives found the man, 67, had a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Investigation revealed the victim resided at a house that had been set on fire earlier in the day, police said. Officers had been called to a home on Hartsdale Lane around 3:30 p.m. to what was then an active house fire. The home was not occupied at the time of the incident, police said, and no one was hurt in the blaze. Arson Squad detectives believe the fire was intentional. The respective squads are investigating the two separate incidents.

A small Centereach farm, about 11 acres in size, is reaching out to the community to raise the funds necessary to continue doing its good work. The farm has been growing vegetables and other crops to donate to food pantries and people in need since 2007, according to Peter Castorano, one of Bethel Hobbs Community Farm’s caretakers, who lives in the sole house on the property. “Ann started it all,” said Castorano. That Ann is Ann Pellegrino. The Centereach woman discovered the farm, which wasn’t too far from her house, after she sought a place to continue gardening and donating the crops to the poor. Alfred Hobbs willed the farm to the Bethel AME Church, its owner since 1955. Pellegrino decided to take over the farm’s maintenance, although it is still owned by Bethel Church. She is now the vice president of the farm, which donates tens of thousands of pounds of crops to those in need each year. The farm has recently experienced an invasion by wild deer, which are eating some of the farm’s crops. The deer eating the crops has significantly lowered the overall productivity of the farn. “It costs a lot to maintain the farm,” Pellegrino said. For this reason, an inaugural 4-mile run, which will take place on Saturday, Aug. 22, at 9 a.m., will help raise money

for a higher fence to prevent further invasion by the deer population. Advanced registration is $20. In addition, it will cost $5 for children to participate in the Kids Fun Run. There will be awards for runners, music and raffles at the event. “It’s a really great cause,” Councilman Kevin LaValle (R-Selden) said. “Hobbs farm is a hidden jewel in the area.” According to LaValle, the run has been made official by USA Track & Field. It will be timed and kept track of like any other official race. “We would like to make this a yearly event,” Pellegrino said. The inaugural run is not the only way to make a difference. There are only approximately eight regular volunteers at the farm, including Dottie Meade, Elaine Gaveglia and Jason Castorano. Castorano finds himself fixing the farm equipment and handling the maintenance of heavy machinery, like the tractor. Meade helps out with a plot of land designated to educating young children and helping them learn and grow. Meade said regular volunteers included the Green Teens from the Middle Country Public Library, volunteers from Long Island colleges like Suffolk County Community College, Stony Brook University and Adelphi University and the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts. “We need volunteers, we need sponsors and we need the word out,” Pellegrino said.

Transit-oriented development is an L.I. tradition Your turn

One of the strategies being widely discussed as a means of revitalizing the Long Island economy is the creation of transit-oriented developments, especially in downtowns served by the Long Island Rail Road. These developments are much needed and would serve multiple purposes — increasing housing options, enhancing downtown areas and providing places to live and work with easy access to and from New York City. But they are not new to Long Island. Greenport on the North Fork was a transit-oriented development in the mid-19th century and thus underscores the potential that this long-standing tradition still offers Long Island, if we can focus on mobility. Ironically, when the LIRR’s track to Greenport was laid in 1844, it was not to provide transit access to New York City but to connect New York with Boston, because the technology did not yet exist to bridge Connecticut’s rivers. Greenport was, and still is, the terminus for the LIRR Main Line —aka the Ronkonkoma Branch — but its fundamental role at the time was to provide a transit connection to Boston by ferry. It was a two-way street for people and for commerce. In the mid-19th century the only way to travel by train from New York City to Boston was by taking the LIRR from Brooklyn to Greenport, transferring there to a ferry to cross the Long Island Sound to Connecticut and then resuming train travel to Boston. Greenport, therefore, evolved naturally as a transit-oriented development with a thriving downtown that was created during this period with housing as well as jobs, commerce and robust population growth. That’s still a central appeal for the concept today, and it’s especially timely. New York City is both the financial capital of the world and a powerful magnet for youth and talent. That makes it all the more important that Long Island build upon its proximity to the city by expanding transit access to its dynamic

building the Fast Track would relieve the problem and generate 14,000 new jobs, $5.6 billion in additional gross regional product, and $3 billion in additional personal income by 2035, 10 years after its completion. The Long Island Rail Road remains an extraordinary resource, but it needs to be thought of again as a two-way street. We also need to think beyond the auto-dependent suburban model to a future where young people, who are the workforce of that future, have the option to live on Long Island or in the city and have easy transit access to jobs in either place. Greenport knows the value of transitoriented development arguably as well as any community on Long Island, because ferry, bus and rail facilities continue to power its reputation as a walkable village where people can live, shop, be entertained and get to work without driving. If Long Island now seizes on this timehonored track to success, the concept may well become fundamental to the revitalization of the region’s economy as well. Camilla Welsch Camilla L. Welsch, 70, of Miller Place, died on March 30. She was born on Jan. 22, 1945, in Port Jefferson, the daughter of Natale and Julianna Marelli. Camilla was an administrative assistant for Stony Brook University Hospital. She is survived by her daughter, Julie (Craig) Godwin; son, Christopher (Kelli) Welsch; grandchildren, Laurel, Rebecca, Haley and Craig; sister, Natalie; brothers, Blair and Gary Marelli; and many other family members and friends. Joel Joles Joel William Joles, 70, of Selden, died on March 30. He was born on April 3, 1944, in Watertown, the son of Paul and Gladys Joles. Joel was a retired Suffolk County police officer and a big Mets and Jets fan. Jerry Spiliotis Jerry Spiliotis, a businessman and entrepreneur who helped the Port Jefferson Country Club rise to the elite status it holds today, died on March 18. He was 76. Walter Hurney, a longtime friend of Spiliotis, described the late North Shore native as someone who had a true eye for hospitality. “He was always upbeat and smiling,” he said. “Jerry was always willing to help anyone in any way that he could.” He owned and worked out of various eateries across the North Shore, including the Charcoal House Restaurant and Bar in Setauket, where Hurney said everybody knew his name because of his uppity attitude. He also helped resurrect the Port Jefferson Country Club, where he purposely worked on his golf game solely to relate to his patrons and become closer with the product he was working to deliver. Margot Garant, mayor of Port Jefferson, once worked under Spiliotis at the country club as a dishwasher. “He was a great guy. He never stopped working right alongside you,” she said. “Jerry was a man for all seasons. He loved what he did, but most of all, he loved all people.”

Community clears fields for kids

Springtime came early at Norwood Avenue Elementary School in the Comsewogue school district thanks to Sheep Pasture Tree and Nursery in Port Jefferson. They donated their time and services to clear the snow off the school’s field so the kids could get a jump-start on playing outside. Norwood’s field is used as a practice field for youth lacrosse players. Not only did the students of the school benefit from getting outside a little earlier this

season, but also those lacrosse players were able to start practicing that much sooner. It was a wonderful way for a local business owner and resident to reach out to help the community. At Comsewogue High School, after the snow was removed from the turf, residents came down to clear the entire field of any remaining snow so the kids could get out there and get their season started. It took a village to help bring this long, cold, snowy winter to an end.

Comsewogue hammered out a 17-7 victory on Monday in a girls’ lacrosse matchup against Deer Park, dominating the home team and scoring seven unanswered goals in a nine-minute span alone. With the win, the Warriors improved to 9-3 overall, with an 8-3 mark in Division II. Comsewogue midfielder Jamie Fischer, a sophomore, won the opening draw and with the game not even two minutes old, freshman midfielder Hannah Dorney fired a shot straight up the center for the first goal. Minutes later, Dorney did it again. The score 2-1 after a Deer Park goal, the Warriors regained possession off a Deer Park save and senior attack Haley Lochren’s shot hit its mark. Dorney bounced another shot in halfway through the first for a hat trick, then made it 5-1 with an over-the-shoulder shot into the left side of the goal before Deer Park managed to get on the scoreboard again. The Falcons scored again with 10:10 left in the half to bring it to 5-3. Comsewogue rotated midfielders at the draw and continued to win the ball, keeping it away from the competition. Dorney scored her fifth goal of the game at 9:19, blazing the trail for the team to light up the scoreboard six more times, ending with a Fischer buzzer-beater. “Today we definitely did great on the draw,” Fischer said. “I think that’s so important because we definitely need to keep possession.” Lochren opened the second half with two straight goals, the first assisted by sophomore Julia Tuohy. After a Deer Park goal brought the score to 14-4, Tuohy scored a goal of her own off a play that began with Fischer winning the draw and carrying it down the field. Fischer passed to senior midfielder Seaver Lipshie at center field, who lobbed the ball over to Tuohy. The sophomore stuffed it

Dorney finished the game with six goals and an assist; Lochren and Fischer each added a hat trick; and Tuohy tacked on two goals and four assists. To The ediTor: Your recent article “State pol aims to boost green energy in schools” (April 23), regarding alternative energy legislation to help school districts fund the use of solar panels, was disturbing. Why should we be looking to lease solar panels when the price of solar panels has decreased by 75 percent in recent years? Solar panels are no long unaffordable. The school districts should buy them outright and reap all the savings in electric charges down the line. To lease the solar panels from [Wisconsin-based technology and energy-savings solutions company] Johnson Controls seems to be an unnecessary expense. it would be giving Johnson Controls too much “control” over our tax dollars. Take easy precautions to prevent crime Sun’s out, thieves out. As Long island heats up after a long, cold winter, so does criminal behavior. We’ve been seeing more and more reports of larcenies, burglaries and stolen property as the weather warms up. it may tick up from here into summer, which would be nothing new in the world of crime patterns. But many of these incidents can be avoided if people would just use their heads. That means locking our cars when we’re not in them, and not leaving purses and other valuables inside — and especially not in full view of every passerby. it also means turning the cars off and not leaving the keys inside. one of our reporters once called the police after spotting an idling but empty car in a parking lot, the lights on and the driver’s side door ajar. About five minutes later, a man who may or may not have been the owner got into the car and drove away. Leaving a car running and walking away from it is foolish, whether we are in a parking lot or in front of our own house. Why tempt fate? We should also remember to close the windows in our houses when we aren’t there. This one is tricky because it’s hot outside and there could be a lot of windows open. But we should all be in the habit of doing it just like we are in the habit of locking our front doors, because open windows can make an easy access point for burglars. Sometimes we cannot prevent a criminal from breaking in and stealing something, but we can reduce our risk by securing our belongings as much as possible.

hen you’re meeting deadlines every week, dealing with angry clients, when traffic takes forever for an important meeting or when body parts that all worked together for all those years now seem to be pulling in opposite directions, it’s easy to let the whole notion of romance slip. Sure, we have Mother’s Day,

Father’s Day, birthdays and Valentine’s Day — well, you have Valentine’s Day. I’m not a big fan of mass, romantic gestures on cue that support the card and flower industries, when we can make our boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands or wives feel special. But, much of the time, especially when we’ve got kids who have mastered the art of playing on our last nerve with the kinds of conversations that are soaked in sarcasm and disrespect, we might find it a tad challenging to find the time, energy and resources to raise the level of our romantic game. And yet, one day our children, who just yesterday seemed to have absolutely no use for the opposite sex, have made that remarkable transition from whispering to each other about who they like to mustering the courage to speak to that person. Recently, our daughter and her friends have been pulled

into the whirlwind of an eighthgrade formal. The communication network is extraordinarily efficient and reliable. Everyone, it seems, knows who is asking everyone else. It’s too bad they can’t add some algebra to the messages they’re all delivering to each other or, perhaps, a few Latin phrases that might be on an AP exam. As an aside, it’s too bad meteorologists, who still seem to be living with egg on their faces from the big blizzard miss of 2015, can’t develop a forecasting model with the same level of middle school accuracy. These kids seem to have taken a page from the birds on suburban streets, who sing loudly through the day, calling to their would-be partners to come share some quality time in their cheery, oak, maple and dogwood trees. One boy interrupted everyone’s lunch in the cafeteria, took a microphone and asked a girl to the formal.

Another suitor, who wanted to go to the dance with a softball player, took softballs and wrote one letter on each ball, to spell out “formal”? And, speaking of sporting equipment, another courageous boy filled a girl’s locker with ping pong balls, which spilled out on the floor when she opened it. In the back of her locker, he’d put a note saying he finally found enough, uh, balls to ask her to the dance. She said “yes.” There have been a few broken hearts and a few near misses, with a girl saying “yes” to someone just as another boy approached her with flowers. Those flowers suffered an unfortunate fate in the hands of the tardy suitor. Learning that a boy she didn’t want to accompany to the dance planned to ask her at an after-school activity, another girl changed her plans and was suddenly missing in action. Fortunately, it seems that, on balance, the anxiety level and

recent editorial in The New York Times decried a blatant act of antiSemitism in Europe. Fans in a major soccer stadium in Holland chanted “Hamas, Hamas, Jews to the gas,” and “Jews burn the best.” The home team, FC Utrecht, subsequently apologized for the outrage that occurred in a game against Ajax Amsterdam on April 5, but just imagine how someone Jewish in the stands might feel in the midst of those shocking outcries. Worse, it was not an isolated incident. Kick It Out, a Brit-

ish watchdog organization, has reported that there were 59 instances of anti-Semitic slurs in the first half of the English Premier League soccer season, with chants of “Yids” and “Kill the Jews” at games. According to the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a human rights organization, there seems to be a new alliance between neo-Nazis and jihadists. After the terrible consequences of anti-Semitism in Europe in the previous century, it is hard to believe such bigotry still exists, much less is alive and flourishing for the rest of the world to witness. What is anti-Semitism today and how did it start? According to columnist David Brooks, there are three strains of anti-Semitism circulating now. The first is in the Middle East, where it feels like “a deranged theoretical system for making sense of a world gone astray,” according to Brooks. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calls Israel the “sinister, unclean rabid dog of the region,” whose leaders “look like beasts and cannot be called human.” Iran’s President Hassan

Rouhani “reinstated a conference of Holocaust deniers and anti-Semitic conspiracy theorists,” who propagate the usual conspiracist idiocy about Jews drinking the blood of non-Jews and spraying pesticides across arable lands. “This sort of anti-Semitism thrives where there aren’t that many Jews,” according to Brooks. “The Jew is not a person but an idea, a unique carrier of transcendent evil: a pollution, a stain, a dark force responsible for the failures of others, the unconscious shame and primeval urges they feel in themselves, and everything that needs explaining. This is a … flight from reality even in otherwise sophisticated people.” Incredibly it can be a part of the architecture of society and taught repeatedly in some madrassas or schools to children. “It cannot be reasoned away,” said Brooks, “because it doesn’t exist on the level of reason.” “In Europe,” Brooks continued, “anti-Semitism looks like a response to alienation. It’s particularly high where unemployment is rampant. … The plague of violence is fueled by young

Islamic men with no respect and no place to go.” Brooks goes on to say that thousands of Jews a year are fleeing Europe. The echoes of terrors throughout past centuries are nipping at their heels. In the United States, which Brooks pronounced “an astonishingly non-anti-Semitic place,” nonetheless there is rising tide of anti-Semitism, especially on college campuses, with its basis seemingly in Israel’s policies toward Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. But why the policies of Israel should reflect on Jews in America any more than policies in Ireland reflected on the Irish in Boston, or the discriminatory and shameful treatment of Japanese Americans interned during World War II should have ensued, is simply bigotry. And anti-Semitism is a particularly virulent form of bigotry whose dark underside is hatred leading to violence and even extinction. History is filled with brutal examples including the pogroms, which preceded the First Crusade in 1096; the expulsion from England in 1290; the persecutions of the Spanish Inquisition and expulsion from Spain in 1492; the

Cossack massacres in Ukraine, 1648-57; the pogroms in Imperial Russia between 1821-1906; the Dreyfus affair in France, 18941906; and the more recent horrors of the 20th century, just for a historical overview. It’s an evil virus that sometimes hides but does not die. Brooks suggested that the best response is confrontation, arousing the “brave and decent people” to take “a page from Gandhi” and stage demonstrations, as laws and governments reign in even the smallest assaults. “Disturb the consciences of the good people. … Confrontational nonviolence is the historically proven method to isolate and delegitimize social evil.” Is that enough? We seem to have conquered or, at least, mitigated the virus causing AIDS. Perhaps against this form of racism, we can together do the same?
