Four candidates, no challenges. Both the Comsewogue and Port Jefferson school boards have two seats up for election later this month, but in both school districts, the incumbents are unopposed for re-election.

Rob DeStefano

DeStefano was first elected to the Comsewogue Board of Education in 2010. He graduated from Comsewogue High School with the Class of 1996 and joked that he’s been proud to be a part of the community since the day his parents brought him home from the hospital. “I’m so honored that our community has supported me,” DeStefano said, as he runs unopposed for his third term. “It’s a lot to entrust in a handful of folks to make sure our district is in the right hands. I take this very seriously.” DeStefano graduated from the New York University Stern School of Business with degrees in business marketing and business management, and a minor in political science. He earned a Master of Business Administration in 2004 from Long Island University. He said he’s spent his whole professional career in technology and is currently a senior product marketing manager for a software company that specializes in mobile connectivity. DeStefano and his wife have a 7-yearold at Norwood Elementary School and a 3-year-old who will soon be attending

Comsewogue schools. DeStefano will be leading the school board’s newly formed public relations committee next year.

Francisca Alabau-Blatter

Alabau-Blatter did not respond to requests for comment on her run for her third term on the Comsewogue school board. Originally from Spain, she moved to Long Island at 13 years old. She has three kids in Comsewogue and teaches Spanish in the Central Islip school district. She holds a bachelor’s degree in art education and a master’s degree in computer graphics. Alabau-Blatter has made comments in the past about her views on standardized testing for students. “I have little kids and I know what they go through,” she said in an interview after her election for a second term in 2013. “The only goal right now is to do well on this test and it shouldn’t be that way — it should be a well-rounded education.” She said in 2013 that she was running for a second term because she felt there was still work to be done in the district.

The Port Jefferson school board president and former educator is seeking a third term because “there’s so many pieces still in play in the district, not the least of which is the search for the new superintendent.” Superintendent Ken Bossert recently announced that this school year would be his last with Port Jefferson, and Brennan

said she wants to focus on finding a replacement because “that person helps set the course for where the district goes.” Brennan, a member of the board’s audit and finance committees and a resident of the district since 1978, noted that all the board members have a good rapport with one another, respecting each other’s opinions. “There isn’t the kind of … interaction that there once was on the board,” she said. “There was a lot of negative interaction between board members.” In addition to finding a new superintendent, the president would like to continue work on infrastructure improvements, because improving the campuses “affects morale for everyone in the organization,” including staff and students.

Boehm, a member of the Port Jefferson board’s facilities and audit committees, also noted the superintendent’s departure when discussing her reasons for seeking a third term on the board. “It’s, I think, good to have people that are familiar with what’s been going on with the school,” she said, “that we remain together” during the change. But she added that she thinks the district has a good administrative team in place, between new principals and other officials, to see everyone through a change in leadership. Boehm, a Port Jefferson grad herself, was once a teaching assistant in the district. “I love the community, especially the

students here,” she said. “Having spent time at the elementary school, I’m familiar with a good number of the student body. It’s a great place. We should have strong schools.” Boehm has served four years as a trustee, after being appointed in 2012 and re-elected to a full term the next year. In her third run on the board, she has her sights set on improving school facilities and supporting special education students “so that they’re career-ready.”

The 3.5-mile Setauket to Port Jefferson Station Greenway Trail will be spruced up on Sunday, May 21, during the Town of Brookhaven’s annual Great Brookhaven Cleanup. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon, in shine or slightly damp weather, and will include a focus on the trail’s eastern end, at the public parking lot near the 7-Eleven on Route 112 in Port Jefferson Station. According to Friends of the Greenway, the task on that end will be to cut down underbrush and vines by trees and fencing. The road to fairness for farmworkers starts in Suffolk County. Supporters of the Farm Workers Fair Labor Practices Act, as it has been known for the majority of its existence, which has spanned years and decades, will begin a 200-mile march to Albany on May 15, starting from Sen. John Flanagan’s (R-East Northport) office in Smithtown. A group called the Rural Migrant Ministry organized the March for Farmworker’s Justice. The group has been lobbying for better working and living conditions and benefits like overtime pay and health insurance for farmworkers, who Linda Obernauer, a volunteer with the ministry, said “live in fear” under “strongholds” from many farmers. “The owners of the farm are the landlords — the owners of the housing,” Boris Martinez, a farmworker from a nursery in Patchogue, said through translator Katia Chapman in a phone interview Tuesday. Martinez is from El Salvador and has worked at the nursery for about two years, he said. “The owners only care that the housing is okay when inspection is going to come. They don’t care what state the housing is in, what condition the housing is in. It’s most likely that there will be at least 10 people living there.” Nathan Berger is the main organizer of the march, which is a yearly occurrence. Participants march between 10 and 15 miles per day, stopping overnight to sleep at churches or at homes provided by volunteer host families. Obernauer said anyone is welcome to march, and they can join during any leg and participate for as many or as few miles as desired. Berger could not be reached for comment. “We should all be involved in this,” Obernauer said in a phone interview Friday. “They are who we are but we don’t give them justice.” Martinez said during a snowstorm last year many of the rooms in the housing

provided by the owner of the farm where he works had leaks. Snow and water got inside of virtually all of the rooms. About 10 tenants share the home at a given time. “The difficulty is that if we were to say to the owner that it’s not adequate housing he would send us out of the house to rent elsewhere because here when you work at his farm we don’t pay rent and it would be difficult to afford rent elsewhere,” Martinez said. “None of the workers are paid overtime pay. None of us have health insurance and if we get sick we don’t have the resources to pay for basic medical care. I know a lot of other workers in the area and none of them are paid overtime pay. Many of us don’t have a day of rest either. I’m right now working about 60 hours a week but when the weather warms up I’ll probably be working 67 or 68 hours.” Martinez added he has friends who work upward of 80 hours a week. “Those in power, they don’t care how we’re doing as workers, what they care about is the money that we’re producing for them,” he said. An anonymous website, located at www.nyfarmworkerprotectionbill.com, provides the farmers’ perspective on the seemingly never-ending battle. An attempt to contact the purveyor of the website was unsuccessful. The email associated is no longer active. “[The Rural Migrant Ministry] and others have recruited various celebrities and ‘foodies’ to support the bill, as well as downstate/New York City legislators, most of whom have never even been to a farm,” the site says. “We believe these individuals have been misled and have not done the proper research to find out the truth about farms, growers, farmworkers, and the challenges we face to bring fresh food to as many tables as possible.” State Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan (D-Queens) is the sponsor of the bill in its current form. A 27-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station was arrested on Champlain Street for having cocaine and heroin at about 6 p.m. on April 27, according to police. He was charged with two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

By Elana Glowatz A rapist was recently sentenced to 24 years in prison for an assault on a taxi driver this past winter. Francis Barrios, 34, already a registered sex offender, pleaded guilty in March to raping the female driver after she picked him up one evening at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson. During the Dec. 1 ride, authorities said, he beat and strangled her, causing the cab to crash into a fence on Mount Sinai-Coram Road in Mount Sinai. Then he sexually assaulted her, pulling her into the back seat and raping her. Officers responded to the scene after a passing motorist called 911. The Suffolk County Police Department has not identified the taxi company that the victim worked for, to protect her identity. Police first identified Barrios as homeless, but the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office has since said he is from Middle Island. He has also been identified by the names Francis Berrios and Francisco Barrios. The offender pleaded guilty to firstdegree rape in late March, and was then sentenced in late April to 24 years

At about noon on April 29, a 48-year-old man from Centereach driving a 1991 GMC Suburban on North Coleman Road in Centereach was involved in a crash with another vehicle, according to police. The man was arrested when it was discovered he was driving without a license. He was charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

According to the New York State sex offender registry, where he is listed as a Level 3 sexually violent offender, Barrios was convicted in November 2004 for sexual contact with a 12-year-old girl, who was described as a “non-stranger” to him. He was sentenced to 42 months in state prison for that crime.

At about 9 a.m. on April 27, a 37-year-old man from Bay Shore entered the bathroom at Smith Haven Mall, took out his cellphone, put it in picture-taking mode and reached the phone underneath an occupied stall, police said. It was not clear whether the suspect was in a men’s bathroom or a women’s bathroom at the

time of the incident, but he was arrested and charged with second-degree unlawful surveillance.

A 20-year-old man from Lindenhurst stole fuel drills from the Home Depot at Independence Plaza in Selden at about 6:30 p.m. on April 24, according to police. He was arrested in Selden on April 28 and charged with petit larceny.

The rear glass door at El Limeño deli on Main Street in Port Jefferson was cracked, though no entry was made, at about 10 p.m. on April 28, police said.

A park fit for a president: play space to expand By Elana Glowatz A hidden park in the corner of Port Jefferson could soon expand, as village officials line up paperwork on a few small properties they were supposed to take ownership of 45 years ago. Roosevelt Park, tucked away at the end of a grassy path beyond Roosevelt Avenue

in the village’s southwestern corner, is as big as the ball field it contains — but it was meant to be larger. A corporation that built houses in the village in the 1970s, as a condition of project approval, was supposed to give three parcels on the western side of Roosevelt Avenue, opposite the ball field, to the village for recreational use. It was also supposed to contribute $5,000 to the

village so it could acquire a fourth piece of land, which is pinned between the existing park, the three adjacent parcels and the Long Island Rail Road track that borders the park’s southern end. But the deed transaction was never completed, although no taxes have been paid on the group of three parcels since the 1970s, according to Port Jefferson Village

Attorney Brian Egan. The village board of trustees, in a legal action at a board meeting on Monday night, called the discrepancy a “scrivener error.” It is not clear what happened to the $5,000; the village does not own the fourth piece of land either. At the meeting, the trustees gave Mayor Margot Garant authorization to record three quitclaim deeds, which would transfer the titles of the properties to the village. Egan said he has spoken to the family of the construction corporation’s owner, who has since died, and “they don’t want to have anything to do with this property.” The fourth piece of land might be a little trickier — property taxes have been paid on that lot, and Egan said the village might have to acquire the sliver through eminent domain, an action in which a municipality claims private property for a public benefit and compensates the owner. When combined with the existing Roosevelt Park, the land could make a spot larger than 2 acres, Garant said at a previous meeting. She has also said that she would like to see the expanded spot become a “dedicated space for peewee programs,” because older players sometimes dominate the Caroline Avenue ball field up the road. While the mayor had said she doesn’t want to impact the surrounding residences, in the village neighborhood off Old Post Road known as the “presidential section,” she had suggested adding some parking at Roosevelt Park. Recycle with town Councilwoman Jane Bonner (CRocky Point) has announced the semiannual Go Green event on May 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rose Caracappa Senior Center in Mount Sinai. The event features a pharmaceutical take back, paper shredding and e-waste drive. “This is our fourth Go Green event and it gets more popular year after year,” Bonner said. “It’s a great opportunity for people to clean out their medicine cabinets, file cabinets, drawers and closets and do it in an environmentally friendly way.” Items that can be recycled include TV’s, calculators, telephones, copiers, DVD players, camcorders, scanners and

power supplies. The pharmaceutical take back accepts any and all prescriptions and over-the-counter medications. By safely disposing, residents will help keep unwanted medications out of the hands of children and out of the groundwater. Residents can bring papers in boxes or bags to be safely and securely shredded and recycled. Documents can remain stapled together, but rubber bands, paper clips and other metal must be removed. program holders. These holders will receive renewal letters this fall. The Enhanced STAR program benefits senior citizens and exempts the first $65,300 of a home’s value from school taxes. The basic STAR program, however, is available for owner-occupied primary residences where the homeowners’ and their spouses’ income is less than $500,000. The program exempts $30,000 of the home’s value from school taxes. According to Romaine, the change in the application process may only affect 3 to 5 percent of homes in the town. But the supervisor questioned if the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance bit off more than it could chew. “My big concern is that if they’re not staffed, there’ll be a huge backlog of processing that will occur,” Romaine said during a meeting at Brookhaven Town Hall. “People won’t get their check on time, and it will put people who are either buying a house or building a house in severe disadvantage.”

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance will see an influx in state school tax relief applications after the state revamps its STAR program. The change affects new homeowners, buyers and those building a home in the Basic and Enhanced STAR Programs. Residents who changed their primary residence from last March onward must apply to the program through the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance for an approved exemption. Long Islanders who started constructing their homes within the same time frame are affected, according to Town of Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) and Town Assessor Ron Devine. Devine said residents who have the program up to the 2015-16 tax year will maintain their exemptions. According to Devine, “anyone who is in the system is in the system.” The town will also maintain its approximate 15,000 Enhanced STAR

Supervisor Ed Romaine worried that ‘people won’t get their check on time, and it will put people who are either buying a house or building a house in severe disadvantage.’

But the NYS tax department said this change won’t be an issue. According to the department, it successfully processed 2.4 million tax returns after implementing the initial STAR registration program in 2013. The department typically receives around 150,000 applications annually. The New York State Legislature passed the law earlier this year to change how towns enforce the program within the state. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) called for the new application process for first-time homeowners and buyers in his 2017 Executive Budget. The budget was approved on April 1. “The STAR exemption is the only property tax exemption funded by New York State,” the NYS tax department said in an email. “Therefore, it’s more appropriate and efficient for it to be administered by the state rather than by local assessors.” According to the NYS tax department, residents can start applying through the department in the upcoming weeks by calling the department or visiting its website. Although residents once received credits on their income tax forms, holders receiving an exemption will get a check in the same amount as their STAR benefit. Murphy is headed to West Point James Malachy Murphy, son of Kathleen and Michael Murphy of Port Jefferson, has received an appointment to the Class of 2020 at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Murphy is a 2015 graduate of Earl L. Vandermeulen High School, where he was a member of the varsity baseball team as well as the varsity soccer team, which won the state championship two years in a row while he was on the team. He was an honor student and was vice president of the senior class. He volunteered with the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook and with AHRC of Suffolk County. Murphy, who currently attends Siena College on an ROTC scholarship, remains an active member of the Suffolk County Police Explorers.

Volunteers earn presidential recognition Port Jefferson Station residents Louisa Marullo and David Badriss have earned presidential recognition for their service to their communities. The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes citizens who give back to their local communities with a minimum of 100 hours per year. Marullo actively volunteers to trap, neuter and release feral cats in the area while Budriss is a volunteer fireman in Port Jefferson Station.

Marjorie Wood, 91, of Jefferson’s Ferry in South Setauket, died on April 4. She was born on Nov. 2, 1924, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Allen.

Marjorie was a retired secretary from Half Hollow Hills school district. Her hobbies included sailing, golfing and playing bridge. She was very interested in water preservation and though she adored her dog, she adored her family most of all. She was preceded in death by her husband William. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters Ann and Susan, son William, seven grandchildren, three greatgrandchildren and many other family members and friends. Joseph Gumbus, 83, of Brandon, Vermont, formerly of Port Jefferson, died on March 26. He was born on Feb. 12, 1933, in Port Jefferson, the son of Joseph and Anitah Gumbus. Joe was a U.S. Navy veteran who served in the Korean War. He was a dispatcher retired from the

Port Jefferson Fire Department, member of the Port Jefferson Racing Team, Jimmy Durante fan, Navy aviation mechanic and dock master at Danford’s. He enjoyed music, cooking, animals, gardening and the outdoors. He had a great sense of humor and was a father figure to many. He loved spending time with family and was a great husband. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Lucille; daughters, Claudette Gadway, Joann Warren and Cynthia Rivers; stepdaughter Alecia Schildt; step-son Geoffrey Morris; five grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren, along with many other family members and friends. Arrangements were entrusted to Bryant Funeral Home in Setauket, where services were held. Joe was afforded full military honors in Calverton National Cemetery. Warriors lax holds on to edge out Huntington Girls win third of six one-goal games this season By Bill landon Despite four yellow cards that forced Comsewogue to play a team member down in the final minutes of the game, the Warriors were able to wind down the clock and hold on to a 9-8 win over the Huntington girls’ lacrosse team in a must-win Division II away game Monday to keep their playoff hopes alive. “We’re [5-6 in Division II], but our record doesn’t show how good we can play,” Comsewogue sophomore Hannah Dorney said. “We’ve had [six] one-goal games and we knew this game would be close.” Huntington (now 3-8 overall) broke the ice two minutes in when senior attack Emma DeGennaro found the cage unassisted, but Comsewogue’s Dorney dished the ball to junior midfielder Jamie Fischer on a cross, and she too buried her shot to tie the game minutes later. At the 12-minute mark, freshman attack Julia Fernandes scored next to put the Warriors ahead 2-1, but the advantage continued to change sides. The Blue Devils put away the next two goals, with junior midfielder Ryann Gaffney scoring first, and DeGennaro following with her second goal of the game, to put her team ahead 3-2.

Seconds later, Dorney got the call and hit her mark to again even the score. With 18 seconds remaining in the first half, junior attack Julia Tuohy took matters into her own hands and darted from behind the net, firing a shot that put the Warriors out-front 4-3 heading into the halftime break. Tuohy said her team lost a tough game two years ago to Huntington, a 15-1 loss, and were thirsty for revenge. “The game was close — another onegoal game for us — but this time, we won,” she said of her team that has now been a part of six one-goal games this season. “We were a little nervous in the first half, but after our coaches talked to us at halftime, we really picked it up, got it into gear.” DeGennaro recorded her hat-trick goal a minute into the second half with a solo shot that retied the game, 4-4. “Coming into it we knew they were going to be close to us, and we expected a good matchup,” DeGennaro said. “It was a big game — we played hard, we played well on defense, and we’ve been working on that in practice.” Three minutes later, after an unintended deflection from one of its defensive players, the ball squeezed past the Huntington goalkeeper Allison Berejka to hand

Stony Brook’s Victor Ochi signs with Baltimore Ravens Victor Ochi realized his dream on Saturday evening when the senior member of the 2015 Stony Brook University football team signed an undrafted free agent contract with the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League. If he makes the team, Ochi would join former Seawolves teammate Will Tye as an active player in the NFL. Tye, the first SBU graduate to play on the big field, earned NFL All-Rookie honors as a tight end on the New York Giants roster in 2015 after making the squad as an undrafted free agent. Ochi, a 2015 All-America selection and the Colonial Athletic Association co-Defensive Player of the Year, led the nation with 13 sacks through the regular season and

was top in the CAA with 16.5 tackles for a loss. For the 2015 season, the Valley Stream native recorded 47 tackles in the Seawolves’ 10 games, including his 13 sacks — the second most in a single season in the program’s history. He also had four games with at least two sacks, including 3.5 against the University of New Hampshire. During the 2015 season, Ochi became Stony Brook’s career leader in both sacks and tackles for loss. He collected 32.5 sacks and 49 tackles for a loss in four seasons. In addition, he made a splash at the 2016 East-West Shrine game in January and turned some NFL scouts’ heads after being invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis in February.

After receiving its second yellow card, Comsewogue struggled to stay at full strength, but were able to retake the lead when Tuohy scored, to edge ahead 6-5 with 15 minutes left. To continue the back-and-forth battle, Huntington hit the scoreboard next with two unanswered goals. First, senior attack and midfielder Katie Reilly served one up to sophomore midfielder Emma Greenhill, who drove her shot home; and Reilly, with her third assist of the afternoon, followed with a pass to Gaffney, who scored the goal that gave her team the lead again, 7-6. “Coming in I knew it was going to be an important game,” Gaffney said. “We stepped up to the plate and I’m proud of how our team played. We have to work on our transition, [but] I thought our defense played strong and I thought we played a great game.” The Warriors countered with three successive scores for a 9-7 advantage with just under 10 minutes left. A third yellow card against Comsewogue gave Huntington a chance to come back, but the Blue Devils struggled to capitalize and went down, 9-8. OpiniOn Letters to the editor Soured on downtown pickleball idea The Village of Port Jefferson has decided to convert the village basketball courts into a dual play area that would include the game of pickleball. This area is located alongside Rocketship Park, a popular spot which attracts many people from surrounding communities who utilize our athletic

and recreational facilities. The basketball courts will be resurfaced this summer with lines for pickleball and basketball put down, to allow people to use the same space at different times for these two activities. Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in many areas of the country. It is played with

paddles, a wiffle ball and nets the same height as a tennis net. The regulation size is 20 by 44 feet and it may be possible to put in two pickleball courts on one basketball court. I am suggesting that the village consider the park on Texaco Avenue in upper Port Jefferson for the proposed pickleball area. This relatively underused park has a basketball area, benches and some swings for younger people and room for a pickleball court. Rail Realty, the developer of the apartments under construction across from the property, has generously agreed to help with the future restoration of this park. It has ample space for two regulation-size pickleball courts. There is also a level grassy area next to the basketball courts where pickleball could be placed. Mayor Margot Garant has said at a public meeting that the pickleball area will be monitored. Does that mean that there will be a person at that site regulating play? Lessons? Will non-residents be permitted to play? How many hours a day for pickleball? Converting a well-used public basketball area in our village amounts to eliminating a space where culturally diverse people come to play pick-up games. It is a highly utilized area used by many groups who bring players there to play and practice. Little Flower and CYO groups are some that come to play. Converting this area for dual purposes would be an especially negative act when there are alternative sites for pickleball in the village. Constructing pickleball courts at Texaco Park would bring more people to the uptown area, making a positive impact on a depressed commercial district.

Sowing the seeds of the farm workers’ labor rights debate Farm workers’ advocates are preparing to march 200 miles up to Albany in the name of better labor conditions, and we think lawmakers should listen. A group called the Rural Migrant Ministry organized the annual March for Farm Worker Justice, which sets off on May 15 this year, as part of its lobbying efforts for better working and living conditions, overtime pay and more for farm workers across the region. One member of that group described farm workers as “living in fear” of the “strongholds” farmers have on them, and the group has accused state Sen. John Flanagan (R-East Northport) of failing to address their concerns since becoming majority leader. But an anonymous website, nyfarmworkerprotectionbill.com provided the farmers’ perspective. “RMM and others have recruited various celebrities and foodies to support the bill, as well as downstate and New York City legislators, most of whom have never even been to a farm,” the site said. “We believe these individuals have been misled and have not done the proper research to find out the truth about farms, growers, farmworkers and the challenges we face to bring fresh food to as many tables as possible.” We understand there are different angles to this debate, but we also firmly believe workers of any type, whether they are legally employed or paid off-the-books, should be allotted some basic rights that lawmakers must find ways to put in placew. We are calling on our elected officials to engage stakeholders in this debate and hold a public hearing in which all parties can contribute to the dialogue. There can be no mutual understanding without communication, and there appears to be a disconnect between farmers and their workers, or even between legislators and the agricultural sector. If everyone sits down together and has a respectful discussion, they may find fertile ground for compromise.

OPINION Reading between the sporting lines S ome conversations need a decoder. “I hate you,” in middle school often means, “Why don’t you pay more attention to me? I think you’re pretty awesome and I don’t know how to tell you that directly.” Or, how about: “What you did isn’t so great. I could have done that.” Translation: “Damn, I wish I had thought of that. Where’d you get that idea?” “Johnny is so much worse at this than I am.” Translation: “Johnny may or not be much By Daniel Dunaief may worse than I am, but I can’t possibly be the worst one at wrapping holiday presents. Please, tell me that I’m not at the bottom of the barrel in this activity.”

Parents have their own way of communicating with each other and/or speaking about their children. Most of the things we say, either to our spouses, to their teachers or to other parents, are direct and straightforward. I’ve had some recent conversations in sporting matters where the subtext is so obvious that I thought I’d share my own decoder. Me: “So, how do you think the team looks this year?” Superdad: “Well, my son has spent much of the offseason preparing for this.” Translation: “I poured thousands of dollars into training. He better do well and you all better notice it quickly, if you want to protect my son and the trainers from my wrath.” Then there was a recent discussion about various volleyball skill sets among our daughters. I was speaking with the mother of a girl who is so much taller than my daughter that she’d have to bend down to eat peanuts off the top of my daughter’s head. This other girl plays the frontline almost exclusively.

Me: “So your daughter Clara looked great in the front today.” Superdad: “Yeah, but she’s the best one on the team in the back line. She just never gets there, but she’s scary good back there, too.” Translation: “I probably wasn’t that good at sports when I was younger and I want my daughter to define awesome on this team. In fact, this team would probably be better if we either cloned my daughter and had her play every position or if we took a few of your daughters off the floor for some of the game, until my daughter was able to give us a big enough lead.” Bragging about our kids is inevitable, and probably helpful as a way to assure ourselves that there is a payoff for all the work of getting them to and from practices, rehearsals and other activities. There are those parents who feign disappointment in their children. Faker: “Oh, man, did you see that she only got two outs when she could have had a triple play? Now, that would have been something special.”

Translation: “She made the most incredible catch anyone has made this year and she would have had a triple play if your daughter hadn’t been studying the butterfly over in the bushes. Next time, maybe the team will be ready for that kind of play and your child can play a supporting role in my child’s greatness.” And then there are the parents who work to limit any praise for their children, warding off the evil eye. Me: “Wow, your son made a sensational running catch in the end zone. Congratulations.” Superstitious parent: “Yeah, I guess it was OK, but the throw from the quarterback and the blocking by the other boys was even more impressive.” Translation: “He’s OK, but don’t call too much attention to him.” And then there are the put-it-in-perspective parents: Me: “That was a tough game, no?” PP: “I suppose, but they get to go home to a comfortable house with supportive parents.” Translation: “Win or lose, life is good.”
