County

Bellone launches second ‘Take Your Shot’ campaign BY JULIANNE MOSHER JULIANNE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D) is encouraging residents to get their COVID-19 vaccines. On Thursday, April 29, he joined Dr. Gregson Pigott, commissioner of the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Dr. Shaheda Iftikhar, deputy commissioner for the Department of Health Services and Holly Rhodes-Teague, director with the Suffolk County Office of the Aging outside the H. Lee Dennison Building to announce the second phase of the county’s “Take Your Shot” campaign.

With vaccine hesitancy on the rise, the multimedia campaign will utilize TV, radio and targeted digital advertisements to address misinformation and build trust for those still on the fence. Bellone said at the press conference that as of April 29, there were 271 new cases of COVID-19 within the last 24 hours out of 15,628 tests. “That’s a positivity rate of 1.7%,” he said. “That is huge.” He added the last time the county saw a number nearing the 2% mark was at the start of the virus’ second wave back in the fall around Halloween — before the Pfizer vaccine became available. “We are below 2% positivity, but we’re back in that 1% range where we were throughout the summer last year, when we were still dealing with the pandemic with no vaccines,” he said. “So, this is significant.” Bellone noted maintaining the lower number is proof that the vaccines are working. “We want to get to the point when we say this virus is behind us once and for all, and the vaccines are the key to reaching our goal,” he said. “You need to be doing everything that we can to get people vaccinated to #TakeYourShot.” The first phase of the Take Your Shot initiative was originally launched late last year in an effort

to foster public awareness and designed to encourage county residents on the importance of receiving the COVID-19 vaccines. The second phase launched last week will continue to help remove potential barriers for people getting the vaccine. “As of yesterday [April 28], more than 660,000 residents have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in Suffolk County,” he said. “That’s nearly 45% of our residents. While we’ve made tremendous progress over the last few months, at this point, there are no excuses, vaccines are available to everyone 16 and older.” Right now, the Pfizer vaccine is the only shot eligible to teenagers, and Bellone said he’s encouraging high school juniors and seniors to do their part. “We have a lot of school-related activities that are opening up and coming back — prom, graduation — and we’re very excited that those are going to happen,” he said. “Getting vaccinated is a way to reduce the spread of the virus and make those big gatherings safe.” Bellone had another message to young people. “You have a stake in this county,” he said. “You can be part of the effort to completely defeat this virus in and help save lives.” The county also announced walk-in

vaccination appointments available at select county vaccine pod locations. “Our residents are busy, they want flexibility,” he said. Started on April 29, residents can visit the Selden campus at Suffolk County Community College and get their vaccines anytime between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. “We’ve seen promising progress,” he said. “As more of our economy continues to open up, we want to return to normalcy.”

New musical meditation center opens in Upper Port What do you get when you combine meditation, mindfulness, yoga and pianos? A new piano relaxation center in Upper Port. Vic “Sonny” Stancarone, owner of Sonny’s Pianos at 1500 Main St., decided to open another spot right across from his store, that will be beneficial to the community — especially after a stressful 2020. On Friday, April 30, a dozen people gathered at his new Piano Relaxation Center, now located at 6 North Country Road. The idea behind it, he said, was to give people a new space to learn piano in a stress-free way. He said that this has been something he’s wanted to do “forever.” “I love buying and selling pianos,” he said. “But I love working with people and now I circle back to doing what I’ve always wanted.” At his other shop, Stancarone buys and sells refurbished pianos. From Steinways to Young Changs, he cleans them up, tunes them and helps them find new homes. He is also known for his art case collection — often

vintage pianos with decorative artwork painted throughout the instrument. But on top of selling pianos at wholesale prices, he had an extensive career in health, fitness and wellness — while also being a piano performer. Stancarone is a former health and fitness director for big-name corporations, adjunct professor and yoga practitioner. He said learning breathing exercises, relaxation and meditation techniques, yoga and marital arts helped cure him of crippling childhood asthma at 11 years old. That experience always stuck with him and, with whatever career path he followed, he always tried to help others the way he was helped, before. His piano playing and teaching methods are based on breathing with the diaphragm, relaxing with emphasis on enjoying the playing rather than playing perfectly. He calls his method “piano yoga.” “I feel that piano playing is wonderful, creative, therapeutic, life-enhancing, stressreducing vehicle that everyone can enjoy,” he said. “The biggest problem with the piano is that people are intimidated by it, they think, ‘Oh, I don’t have talent,’ or ‘I can’t play it,’ but it has

nothing to do with talent.” He added that interested people just need to sit down and try. The way to success is approaching the keys like one would for meditation or mindfulness. “I want them to read, relax and clear their heads of everything,” Stancarone said. “To just kind of connect to what I call the musician with them, so that they could just get into the flow.” So, the new relaxation center is a new way for people to learn piano, learn how to decompress or just jam out. “People are looking to get out of the house,” he said. “They’ve all been cooped up. So, something like this is very nonthreatening. It’s very relaxing.

It’s very easy and my approach is just now sitting down to play.” The main thing is just to relax and enjoy the instrument. “My mission is to let people see that everyone can do this,” he said. “And show someone that the piano is the most accessible of all instruments — you can just sit down and you’re making music.” The space will offer classes of 10 people — each receiving their own spot at a piano. “I teach them breathing techniques, stress management techniques, relaxation techniques,” Stancarone said. “We do a little sitting chair yoga … so, it really incorporates a lot of different things.”

Lavender Fields celebrates 20 years in Port Jefferson village BY JULIANNE MOSHER JULIANNE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM

For two decades, one local shop has seen it all. Lavender Fields, located at 118 Wynn Lane in Port Jefferson, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this month. Known for its homewares, furniture, luxury bedding, gifts and interior design services, it officially opened on April 14, 2001 and has

kept its doors open since. Owner Lori Ressa said it wasn’t always easy, but staying creative and innovative was the secret to her success. “I think just being unique and passionate about what you do, instead of copying another store or just trying to be what you’re not is key,” she said. “Something I learned back in the day in business school is be open to change.” Originally from Brooklyn, Ressa had a background in e-commerce, but always had a passion for design and antiques. She also always wanted to be an entrepreneur and opened her first antique store in New Jersey. Ressa decided she wanted to change pace and landed in Port Jefferson. She and her then-husband saw an advertisement for a store being sold and immediately knew this is where she belonged. “We came here, fell in love with the town, purchased the store and 20 years later, here we are,” she said. Since opening, they had several different locations — starting off on East Main Street under Pasta Pasta, they moved to where the current space for Fame & Rebel is down the street. Six years ago, she found the current spot tucked away off the beaten path. Ressa and her 12-year-old daughter Ava Madrid run the

store now, monitoring the e-commerce through their website, working the retail part of the store and helping clients with interior design. “Customers love the experience of just coming in,” Ressa said. “They walk around, they’ll see the candles, the home keeping stuff, the soaps, and then we have other clients that come in for the bedding and the rugs. We have a real mixed demographic.” She said that for the anniversary, she will be remodeling the store. For now, the front door will feature a decorative flower arch, with Above photo of Ava Madrid, who helps her mom Lori Ressa at their shop, their signature bundles of Lavender Fields, in Port Jefferson village. Ava, who has grown up in the shop, said she Inside the store is filled with a treasure trove of bedding, apothecary items, candles, loves Port Jefferson and the community where artwork, luxe pajamas and lounge wear, gifts she helps her mom every day. “I love the environment here,” she said. for children, kitchen wares, home decor, and Her plans? It might be to take over Ressa’s more. Ressa and her staff are also able to create store one day, but she said the customer custom gift baskets. “Many of our customers wander in before service skills she’s learning as she works they go to a baby shower, birthday party, or alongside her family might lead her to run for bridal shower at a local restaurant, see all of village mayor one day.

Education

Meet the candidates: Port Jefferson BOE elections BY JULIANNE MOSHER JULIANNE@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM

The Port Jefferson Board of Education will hold its vote on May 18 to elect three members to the board for a three-year term — commencing July 1 of this year, expiring on June 30, 2024. Four local residents are looking to take those spots.

Shannon Handley

Shannon Handley has lived with her family in Port Jefferson for 22 years. With two children currently attending school in the district ¬— Port Jefferson Middle and Edna Louise Spear Elementary schools — she has become determined to maintain the success of the local schools. An educator herself, Handley has been a high school English teacher at Bay Shore High School for the last two decades, previously working for three years in New York City’s public schools. “I have a passion for education,” she said in an email. “My unique position — as both a parent and a lifelong educator — would enable me to bring valuable input and insight to the board, as I will bring my parenting experience and high school teaching experience to the complex decisions necessary for continued educational excellence in Port Jefferson schools.” Handley said that if she is elected, she plans to help maintain a strong organizational structure for the district while working closely with the public. “I believe I can help to contribute to a climate in keeping with our district’s mission, one that will promote integrity and mutual respect, allow our district administrators to manage the schools, that will allow the teachers to effectively teach, and will foster an environment in which the students can be supported and develop into responsible, independent, adaptable, lifelong learners,” she said. “Because of my background, I understand how essential it is to serve the diverse values and needs of our community during these unprecedented times while promoting equity and inclusivity for our students,” she said. “My passion for improving public schools, my

knowledge of public schools, my commitment to public education and to serving the students of Port Jefferson makes me an excellent candidate for our board of education.”

Rene Tidwell

Rene Tidwell has been a Port Jefferson resident for 20 years. A mom to a high schooler, and a special education aide in another local district, she said her husband has been a big volunteer within the district. The incumbent candidate said she is seeking reelection for her second term because the last three years had been “fulfilling.” “I want to utilize my first term’s experience to help us move forward as we face some challenges,” she said. Her concerns, she said, are the declining enrollment and shifting demographics and how those could impact the district’s instructional programs. Secondly, Tidwell mentioned the LIPA glide path. “From a budget perspective, ensuring that we maintain a conservative approach as our revenue from LIPA decreases over the nine-year glide path that we have with them,” she said. While these two issues are large and concerning, COVID-19 is also thrown into the mix. Moving forward, she said, she wants to continue to face the mandated safety and security protocols for students. “There’s so much uncertainty around it,” she said. “There are so many different changing guidelines coming quickly.” She said she wants to make sure the district stays on top of everything and makes sure there is a safe and secure environment for students, teachers and staff. Tidwell also has been pushing since before the pandemic for more resources to meet the social and emotional needs of students. “I want to make sure we have enough psychologists to support the students in our schools, making sure we have sufficient professional development for our teachers and, again, just making sure that we’ve got programs in place in all three of our schools to make sure that we are identifying and addressing any social

emotional needs our students have, particularly now that we’re hopefully moving into more of a recovery period from COVID,” she said. “I think we’re just seeing the tip of the iceberg right now. I think the impact is going to continue to play out over many years to come.”

Ryan Walker

Ryan Walker is running for reelection with the board. A father of two, one who graduated from the high school in 2018 and another who is graduating this year, he and his wife moved to Port Jefferson in 2010. “My wife actually grew up in Port Jeff, and graduated in 1986,” he said. “So, we live in the house she grew up in.” Originally from Syracuse, Walker is a retired New York State trooper, who is currently working as a physical therapist assistant at Peconic Bay Medical Center. Three years ago, he was elected to the school board and he said this run is to continue his unfinished business. “We’ve done so much,” he said. “We hired a new superintendent, we mitigated the COVID crisis we had the LIPA glide path in our way. The past three years, we’re managing all that, and we’ve got a big challenge ahead of us.” Walker said he wants to tackle the LIPA glide path issue and its impact on local residents and businesses. He also is concerned about declining enrollment, and its impact on the schools’ staffing. “We have an award-winning [high] school,” he said. “So, we want to make sure we maintain that.” He added that in continuation with the COVID-19 crisis, he wants to see it through the 2021-22 school year and keep families safe. “The last three years while I’ve been there, I’ve been really pleased with how we’ve been able to get through the tough times so far and I’m confident moving forward we’ll be able to get through all of our challenges ahead,” he said. “I’ve been very active in the community and I’ve really grown to embrace Port Jeff as my home.” Walker added he’d like to address the district’s aging infrastructure and find funding for repairs that can no longer be ignored. “I like to think our board is made up of a community with diversity,” he said. “So, what I

bring is my background in law enforcement and security, along with health care. Everyone on the board, they bring in a little something else to it. And that’s the way boards were meant to be — sort of a cross section of our community.”

Tracy Zamek

Tracy Zamek is seeking a third term as a trustee on the Port Jefferson school board. A mom of two Port Jeff high school students — a senior and sophomore — she has been a resident for 25 years. Her husband grew up in the district. For the past 22 years, Tracy Zamek has been an elementary school teacher in the Hauppauge school district. “My experience as a classroom teacher is paramount when it comes to making decisions about what’s best for a student’s education,” she said in an email. Zamek has been a school board member for six years — two years as vice president — where she said she has gained significant knowledge about the district’s students, curriculum, facilities and finances. “I am running for the school board for the same reasons I ran six years ago,” she said. “The first reason being to stand up for the students of Port Jefferson, and the second reason being we need to make smart, responsible decisions when creating our annual budget, especially with the LIPA challenges we are currently faced with.” Zamek said she has always been an advocate for public education. “At community forums I have spoken out against the privatization of public education,” she said. “I don’t believe big corporations should be making the decisions about what’s best for our students. Local school boards should be making these decisions. There is no one size fits all in education.” With the current COVID-19 pandemic, Zamek said she believes the school board should stay focused during these turbulent times, and that all students should be in-person full time next year. “We need to do what’s best for the students in Port Jefferson,” she said. “We need to preserve our programs and continue to provide a stellar education.”

Meet the Comsewogue BOE candidates

On May 18, the Comsewogue Board of Education will elect three members to the board for a threeyear term — commencing July 1 of this year.

Margaret Mitchell

Margaret Mitchell worked in the Comsewogue School District for 47 years as a secretary before retiring. “I just feel that I can give back to the district now, and I’m hoping to make a difference,” she said. Mitchell retired last August, and she said she would still be working if it weren’t for the COVID-19 pandemic. The 73-year-old said she was concerned about the virus impacting her or her family so she decided it would be in her best interest to retire. “I didn’t want to retire,” she said. “I enjoyed working in this district. I know so many people, teachers, administrators, students. I developed a bond with a lot of people in the district and I just feel I want to give back.” Mitchell’s late husband was on the board for 27 years, and all three of her children attended district schools from kindergarten through senior year. “Our whole life was centered around the district,” she said. “I miss it, I really miss it.” As a first-time candidate, she said that between raising a family and working at Comsewogue, she has been in the district for 50 years. “I’ve seen a lot of changes,” she said. “I’ve seen the good, I’ve seen the bad, and I think on the upswing, we’re at a good place right now. And I want to help to continue it.” Mitchell said her main concern right now is the COVID-19 situation. “Our seniors missed out on so much last year,” she said. “I felt so sorry for those kids. And I think our administration has handled it beautifully. I think if we spoke to many of the parents in the community, they would agree. They’ve gone above and beyond to make sure that our students get what they need.” She said she also wants to make sure all Comsewogue graduates have the best support possible to make sure they’re prepared for the real world upon graduation. “I really think that our district is one of the best around and I want to continue that,” she said. Margaret Mitchell did not provide a photo.

Corey Prinz

Although Corey Prinz grew up in Wantagh, he has been a resident of the Comsewogue community for over 15 years now. “I am still a new person around here,” he said. “Which is a great sign of the community, overall.” Up for reelection, Prinz said most of his term has been emergency based. “My whole focus has been, ‘Let’s protect the kids, let’s find a way to get them learning and move forward,’” he said. “This district has done

a lot in the last 10 or 15 years, and I think we’ve gotten a little complacent.” Prinz feels the district can continue to strive for greatness. “I’d like to see us continue to remember that we can do better, not because we’re doing badly, but because we can do better,” he said. “My caveat has always been we’re trying to create good humans here. Right? So, let’s make more of them.” A commercial banker by day and father of two, Prinz has a wife who is a teacher in the district. His main goal is to get kids back to school safely and full time again, as well as providing more social and emotional support for students and staff. “COVID has affected a lot of people in different ways,” he said. “We have to help the kids through this, the kids who have lost their college opportunities because of this.” But that all stems from his No. 1 goal of teaching students at Comsewogue to be of good character. “I think the most important thing is I want people to be good people,” he said. “And it starts with our kids. We need to be reminded to focus on our children to be better-rounded people. There’s opportunity here, we just have to decide to use it.”

Richard Rennard

Rick Rennard is seeking reelection for the Comsewogue Board of Education, after finishing his second full term as a trustee. After being on the board for seven years, he said he wants to continue all the projects he and the board have worked on. “I think it’s important to continue the work that we’ve started, that I’ve been involved in over the last seven years,” he said. “From the commitment to our Middle States accreditation, to the creation of our project-based learning programs that are really starting to take off now, I think that everything we’ve been doing has been really great.” Rennard has been a resident in Comsewogue for 16 years, and is a married father of three children who all attend schools within the district. He is a social studies teacher in the Middle Country school district by day. He said that facing the continuous challenges of the coronavirus and the shutdown last year, he wants to make sure the district’s buildings continue to stay safe. “I want to continue to serve our community and get us back to a hopefully full reopening this fall,” he said. “I plan on continuing my policy of making decisions that seem rooted in what’s best for the kids in our district, and just to continue to use that as my guideline for when we have to make decisions — what’s best for them and go forward with it.” Rennard said his favorite thing about being a board member is seeing how much students within the district progress. “That’s really the most rewarding part about it,” he said. “It’s to see that our kids turn around and give back to the community.”

Hometown History Ebenezer Reeve and the Cedarwold Dairy Farm BY KENNETH BRADY DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Cedarwold Farm was a dairy that operated in Port Jefferson Station from 1892-1908. The farm was located about one third of a mile west of today’s Port Jefferson Railroad Station, south of Sheep Pasture Road, in what was then called Echo. The dairy included about 100 acres of pasture and 25 acres of woodland, fruit trees, a natural pond, an icehouse, a farmhouse, barns and outbuildings. The property was comprised of two tracts: the Emmet B. Darling plot, purchased by Ebenezer Reeve in September 1892, and the Walter Jones parcel, bought by Reeve in April 1899. Reeve was born in Laurel, New York, on May 8, 1851, and began farming at an early age. He married Sarah W. Torrey of nearby Mattituck in 1878; their daughter, Emma, was born the following year. Reeve came to Port Jefferson Station in 1886 and quickly became well known among its community members. Besides working as the overseer at Darling’s farm, Reeve also ran the dairy’s milk route, which put him in almost daily contact with local residents. Following Darling’s death in 1887, Reeve leased the farm from the Darling estate, later purchasing the property from the guardian of Darling’s daughter. Now the owner of a dairy that he had managed for years, Reeve gave his property a distinctive name, Cedarwold Farm, the “wold” an English term for an open, hilly area. Not limiting himself to dairying, Reeve grew

potatoes and turnips at Cedarwold, harvested ice from its pond and took in boarders. He also rented portions of the farm to groups that held outdoor events on the property. The location was especially popular among officials of the Long Island Rail Road who traveled to Port Jefferson by train, capping their outings with clambakes at Cedarwold. Active in local affairs, Reeve was a member of Port Jefferson Lodge No. 627, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Port Jefferson Presbyterian Church, the Echo Progressive Society and the Port Jefferson Gun Club. He had also served as a deputy sheriff in Echo and as a trustee of the Echo Public School. Reeve died on June 7, 1908, and was buried in Port Jefferson’s Cedar Hill Cemetery. His widow later moved to Connecticut to live with her daughter, Mrs. John Bossen. Cedarwold Farm was sold in 1910, changed hands several times over the years and had various uses. Portions of the property were once occupied by a sand mine, an asphalt plant, a turkey farm and a landscaping business, but more recently by now idle Lawrence Aviation Industries, a manufacturer of titanium sheeting for the aeronautics industry. Reeves Road, which connects Port Jefferson’s Main Street with Sheep Pasture Road, is a reminder of Ebenezer Reeve, his idyllic farm and Long Island of yesteryear. Kenneth Brady has served as the Port Jefferson Village Historian and president of the Port Jefferson Conservancy, as well as on the boards of the Suffolk County Historical Society, Greater Port Jefferson Arts Council and Port Jefferson Historical Society. He is a longtime resident of Port Jefferson.

Harborfields 16 Port Jefferson 2

Tornadoes blow-out Royals BY BILL LANDON DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM The Harborfields Tornadoes peppered the net early and often in their season opener at home against Port Jefferson winning the Division II contest, 16-2. It’s been 23 months since either team has seen action, but Harborfields seamed crisp and up to the task leading by two goals two minutes in. The Royals struggled to keep the ball upfield when Harborfields senior attack Leah Hansen’s shot found its mark to put her team ahead 3-0. Harborfields sophomore Sia Markowski scored

as did teammate Marina Bergin for a six-goal lead. With 13 minutes left in the half Hansen struck twice more for an 11-goal lead and with it a running clock. Sophomore Julia Schiliro stretched the net for Harborfields two minutes later before Port Jeff senior Claudia Kountsantanou, took the goose egg off the scoreboard for the Royals. Teammate Katelynn Johnston’s shot found the back of the net a minute later to trail 12-2 at the half. Harborfields flushed their bench the rest of the way for the win.

Letters to the Editor

Education prepares people for the future, helps them achieve their goals and increases their odds of living a life where they not only survive, but thrive. As blues musician B.B. King is famously quoted as saying, “The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you.” President Joe Biden (D) gets that concept, and last week he asked Congress to enact legislation that would allow Americans to attend community colleges for free. Under the American Families Plan, $109 billion would be slated to make two years of community college free for all students. There would also be an $85 billion investment for expanding federal Pell Grants, which is awarded to undergraduate students who display financial need and have not earned a degree. This is one important way to help our young people who are unprepared for the workforce after high school. For many, a community college has given them an advantage that they may not have had otherwise. From those whose grades were less than ideal in high school to those whose can’t afford to attend a four-year university or are undecided on what they want to do with their lives, a community college provides a stepping stone that is local and affordable for most. Here at TBR all three of our current editors attended Suffolk County Community College, which in turn paved the way to making obtaining bachelor’s degrees at other institutions more manageable. According to the website joebiden.com, approximately six out of 10 jobs require education beyond a high school diploma. To succeed in a world where the economy is globalized and technology driven, people are going to need more than 12 years of education. The website also goes on to say that one can do a lot with an associate degree. “Today in the United States there are an estimated 30 million quality jobs, with an average salary of $55,000, that don’t require a bachelor’s degree,” according to the site. Free college tuition for community colleges would mean even more young people being able to achieve the American Dream. It can also keep college-aged students in the area, frequenting local stores, which stimulates the local economy. And in the long term, with less student debt to pay, it may increase the odds of people staying on Long Island and settling down. Two years can make a difference and transform a life. Our sincere hope is that Congress will take this proposal from the president seriously. At the same time, we hope a better look is taken at our current public school system in America. Even before the pandemic, American children were not receiving an equal education from state to state as many schools are funded through local taxes. The more affluent an area a person lives in, the better the education tends to be. Also, there is a need for more pre-K classes across the country to provide children a head start in learning, both academically and socially. Most of all, everybody should be required to complete 12th grade and not be able to drop out of school at 16. The education system in the U.S. needs a lot of fine-tuning. Let’s start by providing high school graduates a chance to get the skills they need in today’s competitive world.

As a veteran educator with over two decades of experience in K-12/ higher education, as well as a parent of school-aged children, I was surprised to see Critical Race Theory becoming a focal point of school board races. As someone who wasn’t familiar with this topic, despite my extensive experience, I googled it. Here’s what I found at the website for the American Bar Association: “CRT recognizes that racism is not a bygone relic of the past. Instead, it acknowledges that the legacy of slavery, segregation, and the imposition of second-class citizenship on Black Americans and other people of color continue to permeate the social fabric of this nation.” I wondered how anyone could disagree. Our history is rooted in discrimination toward the “other”, be it Black, Muslim, Jewish, Asian, LGBTQ+, disabled, Indigenous or Latino folks. There are measurable economic, health care,

and environmental disparities in communities of color. It seems that the right wing has decided that this is the latest iteration of their culture wars. We’ve seen this before with previous buzzwords including socialism, defund, bail and abortion. It’s the same playbook: a fear mongering campaign that is short on facts but long on bigotry. It’s people who have no solutions for the problems we face, instead resorting to scapegoating to keep their base engaged and angry. The Suffolk Police Benevolent Association has now become involved in school board races, promoting school board candidates and publicly lambasted educators who disagree with their views on their Facebook page. The PBA seems to have coordinated this with the Suffolk-based organization Save Our Schools. An excerpt from the SOS newsletter reads: “The enemy is striking at us from many angles. One of their weapons is to re-imagine policing.” The newsletter also uses the phrases “threats

New legislation for bike riders

Last week’s TBR News Media newspapers had an article about county Executive Steve Bellone [D] and county Legislator Kara Hahn’s [D-Setauket] new legislation for bike riders. To be clear, the following does not apply to bicycle riders in general, I own a car and two bicycles, the culpable know who they are. One concern about this legislation is accuracy for reporting a violator. Are the racing groups who display rude hand gestures should a driver toot their horn because, members riding two and

three abreast make passing impossible, best able to accurately judge three feet? Can speeding through stop signs, red lights and riding against traffic make measuring distance easier for guilty bikers than the drivers who need to slam on their brakes to avoid an accident? Car license plates make reporting a driver simple and, it seems this legislation allows the cyclist to be the one deciding who is a violator because they evidently have a mental yard stick. A statement by Kara Hahn was “Our roads are going to be safer now”

of student indoctrination” and warns of “increased vaccinations.” This is all connected to loss of institutional power. With Donald Trump gone, and a supermajority in the New York State legislature, the right wing is looking to build back will be through hyper local offices like school and library boards. Taxpayers must examine who is running for these positions where they live, and keep them their influence out of our children’s education. Our nation has a troubled history, but education is how we create an equitable and just future for the coming generations. As a lifelong educator, I believe in young people. They are empathetic, compassionate, and civically engaged. On May 18, vote for school board candidates who will commit to ensuring the education our children deserve, one based on facts and data, not fear and bigotry. Shoshana Hershkowitz South Setauket

which insinuates the driver is always at fault. She must then be blind to, or chooses to ignore the abundance of two wheelers on the road who are breaking the law. In all 50 states people on bikes are required to follow the same laws as other drivers and unless these laws are enforced for bicycle riders as well, the only thing this legislation is going to do is collect fines for what could be a questionable violation. Joanne Tereshko Setauket

A response to TBR’s April 29 editorial

Let’s get one thing straight — the kids doing wheelies in the road for the sole purpose of showing off don’t read the Record. So, who exactly are you talking to in your April 29 editorial telling bicyclists not to ride in traffic? The tax paying citizens who help pay for the roads you want to set aside for cars?

Their tax dollars are as green as anyone else’s. State and local laws clearly allow bicyclists to use the roads when bike lanes, ever scarce, are unavailable or unsafe. Weaving in and out of bike lanes? Anyone who actually bikes in our area would know that our bike lanes are littered with branches, trash and potholes. Swerving out into the road to avoid a

hazard is often the safest option available. So, let’s be very clear — we can and should crack down on reckless stunt riding and we should also make sure that the roads are as safe for cyclists as they are for cars. Conflating these two very different issues is not only intellectually lazy, but unproductive. Heather Lynch Port Jefferson

Opinion The modern reality of a two-handed life

W

e live such a two-handed life these days. On the one hand, we are emerging from our pandemic shells. On the other, we don’t want to race out too quickly, undermining all the work we did to protect ourselves, our families and our school communities. To that end, I had a few topics on the twohanded nature of our lives: The weather On the one hand, it’s a relief that we can D. None enjoy warmer weather. The summer is of the above approaching. The calls BY DANIEL DUNAIEF from seagulls blend with the steady rhythm of water lapping up on the shores, urging the fortunate residents

of Suffolk County to return to the peace and harmony of the water. On the other hand, the temperature will undoubtedly climb into the hazy, hot and humid zone at some point. While the beaches are wonderful, we won’t all have time to stroll on a sandbar during the week. Vaccinations On the one hand, many people are getting vaccinated, increasing the likelihood that we’re taking an immunological stand against a deadly virus. With a greater percentage of the population inoculated, we stand a better chance of coming together, revisiting family and friends we’ve only seen on Zoom for over a year. On the other hand, a subgroup of people are reluctant to take the vaccines, worried about side effects, the speed at which the vaccine was developed, and a host of other concerns. If enough of them don’t get vaccinated and/or if variants evade the vaccine, we may not be able to beat back this virus as quickly as we’d like.

Graduations On the one hand, we are so incredibly proud that our children have made it through whatever stage concludes this year. We appreciate all they have done to get here and to become the incredible people they are. On the other hand, wait, hello? How did the time go by so quickly? Did we prepare them for the real world? What is the real world? What does it mean to graduate into the second year of a pandemic and how can we prepare them for some of the unknowns and unknowables ahead? Politics On the one hand, we can, potentially, talk about politics again without the echoes of personal animus reverberating from an angry White House. In theory, we can even agree to disagree or to consider compromise. On the other hand, has the left become too powerful even as the right engages in party strife? Are calmer waters really around us, or

is it a temporary reprieve until the tempest returns with the elections in 2022 and 2024? Freedom On the one hand, we are freer than we’ve been in over a year, to travel and visit family, to take our masks off outside and read people’s lips and study their smiles. We can even consider traveling outside the country. On the other hand, after living with a fear of human contact, how much can we set aside our concerns about the public health dangers of interacting with other people? A return to offices On the one hand, we have a chance to speak with each other in person, to share stories about our lives and our children and to discuss the surprising run of a Knicks team guaranteed to have a winning record this year. On the other hand, we have to deal with traffic, parking spots, lines at lunch, and conversations that keep us from returning to the homes we couldn’t wait to leave.

Motherhood: The best (not always) of times

S

trange as it may seem, I always wanted to be a mother. Even before I was in elementary school, I remember hoping someday to be a mother. Thinking back on my early years, I was really more of a tomboy, playing stoop ball and stick ball on the block with the other kids. I did have one doll that I loved. It was quite a progressive doll for its time. I could give it a bottle, and it would subsequently pee. My mother would make sure the baby bottle Between that had come with you and me the doll was filled with BY LEAH S. DUNAIEF water and not milk. But other than that, I wasn’t particularly given to imaginative girly games like playing house or cooking. I just knew that when I grew up, I

wanted to be, among other pursuits, a mother. The idea, of loving a child, teaching a child, nurturing a child, made me happy. Then I grew up, married a man who also loved the prospect of having a child, and in a short time, we had three. That is, we had three boys within four years and two days. Ever hear the old adage, be careful what you wish for? On the one hand, I adored my boys. I fed them, bathed them, dressed them, played with them and hugged them a lot. On the other hand, I well remember a moment when I sat at the kitchen table, my head down on the crook of my arm, and cried. The three of them were screaming “Mommy!” and chasing each other around my legs with two of them needing diapers changed at the same time. There were dishes in the sink, the next batch of dirty laundry was behind me in a pile, waiting to be put into the overworked washing machine, I had not had a chance yet to change out of my nightgown, and I was seriously doubting I would ever get out of the kitchen alive. This from someone who was

never much for crying except in sad movies. They were exceptionally good communicators. I was convinced that they caucused every night before bedtime and arranged for each to wake me up during the night with a loud scream at a different time. One of my neighbors, catching sight of me putting out the garbage one morning, commented to another neighbor that he had never seen anyone look so tired. Yup, that was me. But then there was the other side of the experience. They got a little older, made friends who, it seemed, always lived at the farthest reaches of the district, and of course I drove them frequently to play dates. It gave me a chance to meet lots of other mothers. I drove them to weekly music lessons, which enabled them to join the school bands and orchestras. We proudly attended their initially cacophonous concerts that over the years turned into remarkably good classical music and jazz performances. They played baseball, joined the swim team and the tennis team, and

we thoroughly enjoyed cheering each at bat, each match, each meet, even if we sometimes melted in the heat or froze in the cold. Their academic efforts gave us great satisfaction. They studied diligently and sometimes won contests and awards, which gave us vicarious joy. Of less satisfaction would be a trip to meet with the teacher for discussion of any less than perfect behavior. Then it was prom time. And suddenly, for it seemed sudden, they stood before us in tuxedos, with young women on their arms who they were squiring to the dance. They were all grown up. It was the signal that they would shortly be leaving, eagerly leaving the nest and their parents behind. Yes, they came back regularly from college to have their laundry done and for some good meals. And I like to think for some great hugs. But they were off now, busy with their exciting lives, developing their careers, finding the women they would marry. And the best prize: grandchildren. How lucky I am that my wish came true.
