Port Jefferson held its annual Boater’s Maritime Festival on June 6 and June 7, bringing pirates, art, animals and water sports to the village’s downtown area on a warm weekend. Residents and visitors learned how to row, stepped onto paddleboards, wiggled into kayaks, went on treasure hunts, stuffed their faces with clams, petted slippery snakes and more. Above, paddleboarders get ready to launch from the sand into the harbor. At left, a pirate transforms a local child into his matey. See more photos on pages A14-17.

Two Warriors and two Royals are leading the pack as they look forward to throwing their caps on graduation day. Hannah Lawrence and Renuka Diwan were named Comsewogue High School’s Class of 2015 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. Lawrence is finishing her high school career with a 102.61 GPA. She is attending

Yale University in the fall, majoring in applied mathematics. Lawrence comes from a long line of valedictorians: her mother Cindy, brother David and sister Rachel all graduated at the top of their classes at Comsewogue High School. Lawrence kept herself busy throughout high school playing varsity tennis, helping to integrate new tech in her school as a Comsewogue Student Technology Specialist, and participating in the Women

in Science & Engineering Program (WISE), Math League, the National Honor Society and the Academic Club. She is also a National Merit scholar. Diwan wrapped up her high school career with a 101.39 GPA. In the fall she will start college at Brown University but is undecided about her area of study. She was a National Merit Scholarship Program finalist and was involved in the National Honor Society, varsity tennis,

the Academic Club, the French Honor Society and the WISE program. She also practices Indian classical dance outside of school. The Earl L. Santana says goodbye PJMS principal leaving after three years in district Port Jefferson school district officials announced on June 4 that middle school Principal Antonio Santana would not return for 2015-16, making him the second building leader in the last few months to step down. In a letter to parents and staff, Superintendent Ken Bossert said Santana would leave Port Jefferson Middle School for a role at a Nassau County high school beginning in July. “While this news is disappointing, we are happy for Tony that he has chosen to continue to shape his career in the manner that he believes is best for him and his family,” Bossert wrote. The same day, Santana sent out an email to parents about his departure. “I cannot emphasize enough what a pleasure it’s been working with my students, staff, and parents,” he said. “As I have mentioned at many school functions, it has been a true privilege working in such a great community and all of your efforts in raising such wonderful children have been much appreciated. Having said this, I can’t help feeling a great deal of sadness when I think about all of the people I will miss, especially my students.” Santana’s news comes about three months after high school Principal Matthew Murphy said he would resign at the end of the current school year, “to pursue other educational opportunities.” Murphy and Santana were both hired three years ago to jointly replace the combined middle school-high school principal, Roseann Cirnigliaro. The district has filled Murphy’s slot — it announced recently that Christine Austen, the assistant principal for all grade levels and a Port Jefferson graduate, would succeed him at the helm of Earl L. Vandermeulen High School. “It is wonderful to be given this opportunity to come home and give back to the community this way,” Austen said in a statement. Austen said she wants to introduce more technology into classroom learning and implement new technology-related courses. “Our goal is to prepare our students with skills that will last a lifetime,” the incoming principal said. Bossert said in his Thursday letter that the search is already underway for a new middle school principal, but “due to the

timing of this vacancy, it is likely that there will be a gap between Mr. Santana’s departure and the appointment of a new principal.” Parents may reach out to Bossert, Assistant Superintendent for Business Sean Leister or Executive Director of Curriculum Maureen Hull with any questions. “Further information about the progress of our search for Mr. Santana’s successor will be shared with our community as it develops.” At the time of Murphy’s resignation announcement, the superintendent said the district did not plan to return to its previous system of having one principal for both the high school and the middle school. The district was able to operate in that manner for the two schools, which share a building, because it had a waiver from the state education department but that waiver has expired. Bossert has previously said the two schools are different learning environments that require “separate and distinct” principals.

School board ponders proposed policies

EXCELLENCE. WE MAKE AN ISSUE OF IT EVERY WEEK.

Officials are working toward updating Port Jefferson school district policies for the coming school year, largely in relation to student behavior. The board of education accepted first readings of 14 new policies or policy changes, regarding the dress code, student conduct and discipline, and substance abuse, among other topics. If adopted, the policy on student dress code would change to specifically list types of inappropriate clothing, whereas the current policy leaves it more open to interpretation, saying only that clothing cannot be obscene, too revealing or a health hazard. “Extremely brief garments such as tube tops, net tops, halter tops, spaghetti straps, plunging necklines … and see-through garments are not appropriate,” the proposed policy reads. “Underwear [must be] completely covered with outer clothing.” It would also rule out, like the current policy, vulgar or obscene items on clothing, as well as items that denigrate others or promote drug use or illegal activities. More changes would be made to the district’s policy on visitors to the school

buildings. Under the current policy, visitors must report to the school office and receive a visitor’s permit, and “whenever possible, entrance to the school buildings shall be restricted to entryways most effectively supervised by building staff.” But if the new policy is adopted, all visitors to the schools during classes would enter only “through the designated single point of entry, have a clear purpose and destination, and report to the designated visitor sign-in area.” The visitors would have to surrender a photo ID for the duration of the visit and receive a badge to be worn at all times. In the policy regarding substance use and abuse, the school board might add language to the list of prohibited substances — which currently includes alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, LSD, cocaine, PCP, heroin, steroids and other drugs — to also ban synthetic versions of them, whether or not they are illegal. Trustee Bob Ramus, the head of the board’s policy committee, said the 14 policies could be adopted upon a second reading later this month or next month. Five old policies — the outdated versions of some of the new policies — would be deleted at the same time.

Candidates debate in race for village board It was mostly incumbents versus challengers during a debate between candidates for the Port Jefferson Village Board of Trustees on June 3, with the two groups standing apart on issues such as the village’s comprehensive plan, taxes and the local power plant. The event, run by the chamber of commerce, featured all the board candidates:

Mayor Margot Garant is running for her fourth term against businessman Dave Forgione, and Trustee Larry LaPointe is running for his third term against resident challengers Matthew Franco and Stan Loucks. Two trustee seats are up for election — LaPointe’s and that of Trustee Adrienne Kessel, who is not seeking re-election — so the two candidates with the most votes will win slots on the board. Longtime village judge Peter Graham, who is unopposed for re-election, was also present. At the Village Center debate, the five candidates sparred on the topic of the aging Port Jefferson power plant, which could need to be upgraded — or repowered — soon if locals want to keep it as a key source of property tax revenue for the village. Locals have feared the plant will not be repowered for several years, and village officials have been lobbying to save it. Franco said the village is in a “waitand-see pattern” on those efforts, but

needs to be more proactive by finding places to cut the budget and thus lower taxes. Forgione also pointed to reducing taxes as a solution, saying that year-toyear village tax increases are too high. On the other side of the argument were incumbents Garant and LaPointe. The trustee said he “resents the implication” that the village board has been just sitting and waiting, as members have been visiting Albany to lobby for repowering and bring parties to the table to negotiate as much as possible. Garant added that to help prepare residents for VILLAGE BOARD RACE continued on page A19

Officials push for a safe boating season Pledge crackdown on boating while intoxicated By Alex Petroski

Town and county officials aren’t taking boating safety lightly, and are urging residents to take precautions while out on the water this summer. The issue was the topic of discussion at a press conference held at the Sandspit Marina in Patchogue on June 4, following a hit-and-run incident on May 24. Mark Tricarico, 31, of Selden, was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a boating accident involving injury, according to a Suffolk County Police Department press release. Tricarico allegedly crashed a 23-foot boat into the west jetty at the entrance of the Patchogue River on the night of the 24th. One passenger was treated for minor injuries. Tricarico could not be reached for comment. “If everyone follows safe boating procedures, most accidents can be prevented,” Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) said on June 4, just yards from the site of the incident. June and July are typically the busiest boating months of the year on Long Island, and Romaine, along with SCPD

general boating safety precautions, like avoiding alcohol while operating a boat, being aware of weather forecasts and following paths set by buoys. “Stay in the navigable channels,” Romaine said. “Understand what the buoys are for.” Operating boats while intoxicated was a point everyone touched on. “You don’t see it that often until you see a boat up on the rocks,” Jesse Mentzel, a bay constable, said in a one-on-one interview. “It happens, and they could hit another boat just as easily.” Assistant Deputy County Executive Tim Sini attended the press conference on behalf of Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone (D). “We want to make one thing clear— boating while intoxicated will not be tolerated in Suffolk County,” Sini said.

He added that there would be checkpoints and patrols to monitor the waterways and ensure that everyone remains safe this summer. Some additional safety precautions suggested by Romaine and Vitale included a boating course approved by the U.S. Coast Guard as well as a swimming and first-aid course, operating at safe speeds, and designating an assistant skipper in case you are injured or otherwise unable to assume command of the vessel. “The water can be a very hostile environment,” Vitale said. “It’s a beautifullooking place and it is truly, but it can be very hostile to people. You have to pay attention. You have to be aware of the weather. You have to be aware of the currents. This is something that, every now and then, people get out on the water and they just don’t get it.”

Suffolk County tackles toxic toy legislation By Phil Corso

Suffolk County is not playing games when it comes to toxic toys. Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket) saw one of her latest proposals receive unanimous support last week when the Suffolk County Legislature approved measures that would ban the sale of any toys containing potentially dangerous toxins. The Toxin Free Toys Act zeroes in on six toxins most commonly found in toys marketed to children and will forever ban them once the legislation gets County Executive Steve Bellone’s signature. Hahn said the initiative came as a response to a recent report issued by the New York League of Conservation Voters and Clean and Healthy New York that found several children’s products containing carcinogenic components on the shelves of Long Island stores. Most specifically, the legislation targeted dangerous materials that are linked to cancer, cognitive impairments, hyperactivity and genetic disorders in children, Hahn said. “As a mother, I am outraged that children’s toys contain these toxic chemicals that can cause cancer, learning and developmental disabilities and respiratory, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal disorders,” Hahn said. “By passing this law today, we are acting proactively to protect our children’s health.” Under the proposal, new children’s products sold in Suffolk County would

need to contain less than specified limits in parts per million of the six following components: antimony, arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, lead and mercury. The legislation pegged the county’s Department of Health Services to head up the operation by notifying retailers by the beginning of 2016 that inspectors would be conducting random checks

for toys and other children’s products containing toxic content using an x-ray fluorescence analyzer. Clean and Healthy New York released the “Toxic Toys on Long Island” report back in December, surveying retail spots like Target, Party City, Walmart, The Children’s Place, Macy’s, Ocean State Job Lot and Dollar Tree and finding that

some products contained potentially harmful materials. The report found more than 4,600 children’s products and toys contained at least one of 49 hazardous chemicals. Kathleen A. Curtis, executive director of Clean and Healthy New York, was one of several health and safety advocates to applaud the proposal as an appropriate response to December’s report. “In the absence of a strong state or federal law to regulate toxic chemicals in children’s products, it is both laudable and appropriate for Suffolk County to take action to protect its most precious and vulnerable residents,” she said. “Hopefully, this action will create a tipping point for New York State to follow suit. Otherwise, more localities will step up and follow Suffolk’s lead.” Marcia Bystryn, president of the New York League of Conservation Voters, has also been at the forefront of the statewide push to limit the kinds of toxins children could be exposed to through their toys. While the state still waits for its own comprehensive response to toxic toy legislation, Bystryn applauded Suffolk for taking the lead. “Toxic chemicals have no place in children’s toys, and they should not be on store shelves for sale,” Bystryn said. “I applaud bill sponsor Kara Hahn and the Suffolk County Legislature for sending a clear message to parents that they deserve the right to know what dangers are lurking in the products they bring home.”

Kids unveil buddy bench To encourage inclusion and kindness on the playground, the Edna Louise Spear Elementary School cut the ribbon on a new playground buddy bench during the school’s Friendship Day. The buddy bench, which was purchased through a Royal Educational Foundation grant, aims to ensure that any student who may feel isolated or left out has someone to play with during recess. All students are encouraged to invite those sitting on the bench to play. During the ribbon cutting, students wore yellow to signify friendship, read poems and sang. L.I. inventors’ backyard game explodes in popularity RampShot starts taking over as a new summer favorite BY AlEx PEtrOSkI

Lots of people have ideas. Some say they do their best thinking in the shower. Josh Bonventre’s big idea came while driving home from his day job as a physical education teacher in the Shoreham-Wading River school district. A few years ago, Bonventre was a typical Long Island husband and dad of three. Now he is the co-founder of RampShot, an outdoor game designed for four players which involves four racquetball-like spheres and two ramps with built-in nets. Two players make up a team and score points by either tossing the ball into the net or catching the ball after it bounces off the top of the ramp. The idea may sound simple, but taking it from a fleeting daydream in traffic to an award-winning, booming business venture is anything but. Bonventre, along with help from his

friend and co-founder Kevin Texeira, set up shop in Bonventre’s detached garage at his Center Moriches home about two years ago. Today, the garage is bursting at the seams with office furniture and packaged RampShots waiting to be shipped. Texeira has since moved from Mount Sinai to the Finger Lakes area in upstate New York. He is a national sales manager for a cookie company in addition to his responsibilities with RampShot. “Right now our biggest obstacle is getting them made fast enough,” Bonventre said. Bonventre and Texeira launched the company Shore Creations in November, though RampShot is their only game so far. Their trajectory as a company is hardly the norm. Within the first two months of the company’s launch, the duo applied to be recognized by the National Sporting Goods Association as one of its top 10 new products. By April, they were on a plane to Austin, Texas, to attend an NSGA conference and be recognized as one of the top products. In addition, the game was featured on A&E Network’s “Project StartUp.” “They’re a great partner for the sports industry,” Katie Nemec, director of marketing for the NSGA, said in an email about Bonventre and Texeira. “Everyday I wake up I just can’t believe what’s happening,” Bonventre said about the success his company has ex-

Port Jefferson athletes take talent to the next level

Royals pride shined through as Port Jefferson’s athletic department hosted a college commitment ceremony on June 3 for student-athletes who have chosen to continue their athletic journeys at some of the nation’s top colleges this fall. During the ceremony, the seniors penned their names to college commitment letters, as proud parents, coaches

and school administrators looked on. “These athletes have all made an enormous impact on the Port Jefferson athletic community by either being on championship teams or by setting school, state and personal records,” athletic director Debra Ferry said. “They each have what it takes to succeed as college athletes. I wish them the best of luck.”

The school district extended its congratulations to: Allegra Fils-Aime, who will be competing on Wesleyan University’s track and field team; Emilie Harrington, who will be on Hunter College’s volleyball team; Shannon Fee, who committed to play softball at SUNY New Paltz; James Burke, who will be competing on Georgetown University’s

Division I track and field team; Tristin DeVincenzo, who will wrestle for the University of Pennsylvania; and Alden Mohacsi, who committed to competing on the track and field team at Dickinson College. Above, student-athletes from Port Jefferson are all smiles as they commit to the colleges at a ceremony held in May.

Scholarship awarded Port Jefferson All-American wrestler Tristin DeVincenzo has been named the recipient of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association’s Student Athletic Scholarship, which was presented to him by the Suffolk County Athletic Directors Association. To earn the scholarship, DeVincenzo’s essay about how high school athletics has impacted his life was selected. The scholarship also recognizes DeVincenzo as a distinguished scholastic athlete with leadership and sportsmanship qualities. This fall, DeVincenzo will be attending the University of Pennsylvania. The wrestler was named an All-American athlete at the end of this past wrestling season. DeVincenzo holds county and state wrestling titles over his Port Jefferson varsity wrestling career and holds a 137-19 career record. Photo from the Port Jefferson school district

a potential loss of tax revenue from the plant, the board has been putting money aside each year and working to resolve tax grievances in order to stabilize the tax roll. Loucks, who fell on different sides of different issues throughout the night, said the village must continue pressuring state officials to push for repowering. On the topic of the draft comprehensive plan, which includes recommendations for development throughout the village, candidates were asked if they support the document as it reaches its final stages of review. Garant, LaPointe and Loucks spoke in favor of the plan, with the incumbents

saying it will work to improve the commercial areas uptown and downtown in particular. “We have the problems of a small city,” LaPointe said that night, imploring the audience not to fear change. “I want the blight gone.” Forgione and Franco argued the village should modify the plan based upon recommendations that the Suffolk County Planning Commission listed in its letter approving the plan. In the fight for mayor, the candidates closed with Forgione saying he would strive to get more community input. “I will do more than run this village,” he said. “I will serve this village.” Garant called on the audience to return her as the village leader. “This is a very critical time,” she said. “I am your mayor.”

OPINION

File photo by Greg Catalano

A reader responds to a previous letter regarding Memorial Day Parade attendance.

LETTERS Continued from page A34

Memorial response to the editor: i was surprised by Bob Mandel’s letter citing small turnout for the Memorial day parade in the June 4 edition (“Small crowds”). i too am a longtime resident, for 35 years. i too served in the Army for two years. i share Mr. Mandel’s view of the importance of the parade, and i attend happily each year. My surprise comes from his statement that

“the crowds along the parade route just weren’t there.” From my usual viewing spot at the corner of Gnarled hollow road, it seemed to me that there was the usual robust and enthusiastic turnout. i was particularly pleased by the large number of young families with children. i write this letter because Mr. Mandel asked for responses to his letter. Royals head to states TRACk & FiELD By Desirée Keegan

The Royals have always risen to the occasion, and the boys’ track and field team hopes their efforts this year on the state stage will be no exception. Despite missing the entire spring season with an Achilles tendon injury, Port Jefferson standout James Burke — and two of his fellow Royals — placed in the Section XI individual championships and state qualifier on their home track last Friday and Saturday, to advance to the state championship this weekend at the University at Albany. “It was devastating to lose James this spring season,” Port Jefferson head coach Rod Cawley said. “He’s the captain of the team and one of the best athletes in the state. But it’s quite an accomplishment to have three athletes competing this weekend.” Although this season’s squad did not win any of the championships the Royals usually nab, like the league, division and county titles, the boys still finished the dual-meet season with a 5-1 record — dropping only their final matchup against Wyandanch, 79-59 — despite missing Burke, as well as junior Billy Witrock for a portion of the schedule. Although he did not compete during the regular season, Burke placed second in the 1,600-meter, his signature event, at the qualifying meet with a time of 4 minutes, 18.39 seconds — only five-hundredths of a second behind Ward Melville’s John Ripa. The Royal has finished that event as fast as 4:08.48, during the New Balance Nationals Indoor at the Armory in Manhattan earlier this year. The time made him the second-fastest miler in the country and earned him a silver medal. “I give him credit for coming back and coming in second,” Cawley said about the qualifier. “The plan was to go out and try to take it easy to rest his tendon, but being the competitor that he is, there’s no taking it easy. Slow the takeoff on local drone laws

As a community newspaper, we find ourselves tossing around the phrase “NiMBY” — standing for “not in my backyard” — from time to time. But it’s usually more of an expression, and a negative one, than a literal translation of residents resisting something from going into their actual backyards. But in the case of drones, NiMBY could not be taken more literally. Call them drones, call them unmanned aircraft systems — either way, the public perception of these flying devices is still developing as they buzz around the skies. huntington Town attempted this week to ground concerns over these drones when it introduced a resolution that would regulate their use for the betterment of public health, privacy and safety “so that operation of same is respectful of community standards [and] the concerns of residents, as well as protect property and privacy rights,” the resolution said. huntington wasn’t alone in its efforts to come out a step ahead of drone regulation, either. U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer and several other elected leaders have been banging the drone drum for months now, calling on the Federal Aviation Administration to require drones to fly below 500 feet and limit where they can fly. While we understand the legislative urge to keep an eye on the sky for the sake of public privacy and safety, we hope our public leaders don’t turn the drone debate into a droning drain on resources. There are several things to consider when it comes to drawing the legislative line for drones. At what point would new laws encroach upon our personal freedoms? Whose job is it to regulate them? does the regulator depend on how high the drone flies or what jurisdiction is underneath it? Should regulations vary based upon the type of drone? Moving forward, our local municipalities should not jump the gun. officials should properly investigate all the nuts and bolts of the drone industry and be careful when determining where governments should step in. Flying a drone is not like flying a kite, and we, like many of our neighbors, are concerned about personal privacy and public safety. All we ask is that our elected officials consider the whole subject carefully before inking laws.

To The ediTor: it’s time for a change in Port Jefferson. Why am i voting for dave Forgione for mayor and Matt Franco for trustee? Former Mayors Sandra Swenk, Bob Strong and Mike Lee are supporting dave Forgione and Matt Franco. These three great mayors have my respect for their years of service and wise judgment for the future of our village. Their endorsements speak volumes for change from the policies of the present administration. Forgione and Franco have not accepted any money from developers and will vote “no” on placing privately owned cabanas

on our beaches. They’ll revitalize blighted areas of the village and attack crime. They also promise to increase services in the residential sections. The platform includes eliminating hiring high-priced, out-of-town consultants, requiring more free, resident-only parking, restoring rental and home ownership equation and demanding that developers pay their fair share of taxes to support village services and schools. it’s time for residents to get a square deal. Forgione and Franco will energize the Port Jefferson power plant repowering committee to include the village, school district, fire department, library and grassroots citizens’ committee founded by Trustee Bruce Miller. They will rally

Voting for the Port Jefferson Village election is at the Village Center on June 16.

Stand with Stan To The ediTor: First, i would urge all golfers at the Port Jefferson Country Club to vote Tuesday, June 16, for Stan Loucks as village trustee. during Stan’s tenure as the chairman of the country club committee, he has shown exemplary leadership and devoted thousands of hours to turn our club into the premiere village-owned country club on Long island. As a retired school athletic director, he brought the full force of his administrative experience and work ethic to this volunteer position. Stan maintained an iron fist on the budget line, which is 100 percent memberfunded — a totally neutral expense to residents at large. While not costing taxpayers any increases, Stan oversaw the total renovation of the country club infrastructure, including construction of new maintenance buildings;

installation of a state-of-the-art sprinkler system; completion of the bunker restoration project; implementation of a cost-saving equipment lease program; and institution of an annual member assessment fee to fund improvement bonds. Second, if you are not a golfer but own a home in Port Jefferson, you should vote for Stan. Why? Because through his devotion to improving the country club, he has protected and enhanced the property values for every homeowner in the village. Third, vote for Stan because he provides a healthy, responsible and mature approach to problem solving. At the recent candidates debate at the Village Center, challengers raised legitimate concerns, but some were willing to state halftruths as gospel; take cheap shots at incumbents to gain political favor; and offer sound bites for complex solutions. Stan clearly indicated he

the entire village for aggressive political action and judicial termination of the proposed Caithness ii power plant in Yaphank. They will promote a repowering campaign that engages all segments of the Long island community to support the PSeG Long island report declaring that we don’t need a new 750-megawatt Caithness power plant and higher utility rates. in conclusion, Forgione and Franco will guarantee more transparency, diversity, fresh ideas and preservation of Port Jefferson’s historic maritime character. Your vote will make a difference on Tuesday, June 16, in the Port Jefferson Village Center. Philip Griffith Port Jefferson

doesn’t have all the answers to the significant issues that face our village. Such humility is refreshing and a reflection of a balanced approach to decision-making. We need a village trustee who makes informed, measured and mature decisions based on facts, not political fodder. We are fortunate to have an outstanding teacher, administrator and village volunteer such as Stan step forward to seek a village trustee position. Stan has shown extraordinary skills and dedication to improving the country club to the benefit of all Port Jefferson residents. We should trust him to do the same at Village hall as our next village trustee. Stand with Stan Loucks. he will continue to make a difference. Jim White Port Jefferson

The perennial trauma of public speaking

D. None of the above by DaNiel DuNaief

e talk constantly. We speak to our spouses when we wake up, to our children when we try to get them up, to our friends on the way to work, to the person preparing our morning bagel, and on and on. Most of that speech is automatic. “Hey, how are you doing?” “Great, you?”

“Can’t complain. I mean, I could complain but who’d listen?” When we’re not talking, we often hear an internal dialogue. “Why didn’t you demand a raise?” “Next time, next time.” “You’re always saying that. This is next time.” “Hey, stop yelling at me!” Words are as natural most of the time as the steps we take on the way to or from the car, down the block, or up the stairs. We don’t think, “Left, right, left, right.” Wait, no, isn’t it, “Right, left, left, right, right?” And yet, something happens to the natural flow of words when we have to give a speech. It’s not the same for everyone. I suspect many politicians are so comfortable giving speeches that they just need to know where the camera is to share their eloquence. That’s not exactly the word I’d use to describe the times I’ve had to speak in front of large, or

even medium-sized groups. I’ve spoken out in meetings many times about stories, offering my opinion or awareness of the history of an evolving story to a group of editors. I’m fine in those situations. It’s when I get up in front of a group of people, many of whom I don’t know, to share some words on a subject that the discomfort begins. I lick my lips regularly before I begin, as the saliva that pours forth from my mouth so readily at other times has decided that this moment is the ideal time to take a vacation. My breathing becomes shallow and quick. “I, uh, would, uh, like to, uh, say a few words.” Speeches are like walking on the bottom of the ocean, wearing heavy boots and breathing through a small tube. Suddenly, the words become like unknown and unseen obstacles, blocking the path to communicating something charming,

witty, insightful and cohesive. “Uh, hi, I’m, uh, uh, Dan, right, Dan.” Why do those public words become so unfamiliar and uncomfortable? Is it because we can’t correct them? Do we feel as if we need to perform the words instead of just sharing what’s percolating in our minds at the time? In the middle of a speech, we can’t say, “Where was I? Oh, yes, that’s it. I could really use a tuna sandwich right now.” I recently gave a short speech in front of a group celebrating my brother’s birthday. I didn’t know many of the people in the room and even though it was a receptive audience, I started to feel the typical nerves building up in those last few moments. The speech went fine, or so people have assured me. But then, of course, the voices in my head shared their customary public-speech criticism. I became like all those pundits

who second guess every word and decision after an election or after the big game. “You know,” I thought to myself, “you should have started with this joke. That would have been funnier.” “Oh yeah?” I wanted to bark back at that self-critical voice. “Where were you 10 minutes ago?” “I was here, you just couldn’t hear me because too many other voices were up here, shouting into your ear not to mess up.” Yet it always seems to turn out all right. Until the next time.

eddy will be 10 years old this week. Who is Teddy? That’s an interesting question that we have frequently debated over the years. Ostensibly Teddy is a dog, a gorgeous golden retriever, on the large and hairy side. But we who live with him know differently. While he masquerades as a dog, trotting around the house drinking and eating from his dog bowls and otherwise sleeping and greeting, we know he is much too wise to be a dog. I’ve not been a believer

in reincarnation particularly, but if there is such a process, Teddy is the real deal. We’ve speculated on which of our ancestors he might be, and we’ve not come up with a certain identity. But there is no question regarding his intelligence. For example, when we are sitting in the living room and talking, he will curl up in the center of the room and join the conversation. Really. To the extent that he is able, he communicates with throaty and moaning sounds up and down the human scale. When he wants to go out, he will come over to where I am reading and try to look me in the eye. If I refuse to meet his gaze, he will plop his head across the newspaper or book I am holding, forcing me to acknowledge his presence. When I do, he will jerk his head in the direction of the front door repeatedly until I get up to get the leash. Then he will bound toward the door while uttering a series of falsetto sounds clearly expressing his joy.

OK, so that’s not so brilliant. Every dog knows how to communicate its biological needs to its walker. But consider this. It’s raining, dark and late. I’m standing in front of him, leash in hand, asking encouragingly, “Want to go out?” No response. “Want to go out?” I ask again. Unmoving, he will shake his head from side to side. He has mastered the body language for “no.” He can also spell. If the time is right for his next outing and I interrupt the conversation with my family by asking if anyone wants to take him o-u-t, he will jump up and rush toward the door with the ritual histrionics. Goldens do have the most expressive brown eyes. Sometimes, when I have something on my mind and no one else is around to overhear my monologue, I will talk to Teddy and he will fix his limpid eyes on me all the while. Now he may just be thinking, “What on earth is she carrying on about?” hoping that, if he stays still long enough, in the end I will give him a dog cookie. But that’s the wonderful

thing about dogs: They never seem to have pejorative thought about the people who care for them. One of their greatest attributes is that they can’t repeat what you tell them. They can only listen sympathetically. We should all be so smart. Teddy loves broccoli and kale, especially when prepared with some garlic. He also eats yellow and red peppers, spinach, mushrooms and onions, all with gusto. He does not eat tomatoes nor bananas. Teddy bears his age with grace. In human years, he is in his 70s, and his hips give testimony. He has some distinguished white hairs among the gold around his muzzle, and he definitely likes to sleep a little later in the mornings. He has developed an impressive snore. Our daily walks are a stately event. No longer do I have to keep him on the leash for fear he will dash off to the nearby beach or visit his friends in the adjoining yards. He is content to walk at a moderate pace beside me

Teddy, the golden retriever, bears his age with grace. — most of the time. When a rabbit crosses our path, he will look at it almost quizzically, as if wondering why he used to get all steamed up chasing a bunny. A cat? Not so much. He will still go off in pursuit of one — for at least 50 feet — and then return to my side looking mildly embarrassed. He needn’t be because one of his endearing traits is his playfulness. I never scold him for being a dog, even a dog in disguise. And I appreciate that, even if he is past retirement age, he still works at his job. He knows that his job is to guard the house, and if anyone should drive up in a car he doesn’t recognize, he will let loose with a series of ferocious baritone barks. That is, if he hasn’t slipped downstairs for a civilized afternoon nap. Happy Birthday, Teddy.
