Gimme shelter As summer jitney rolls on, village explores bus shelters BY ELANA GLOWATZ The village jitney is up and running again, shuttling residents and visitors through Port Jefferson on summer weekends. But in its third year, village officials may take things up a notch. At a village board of trustees meeting last Monday, Trustee Larry LaPointe announced they had received a $12,600 grant from Suffolk County to build three small shelters for people waiting to hop on the jitney. It is a matching grant, so the village will have to kick in as much money as it accepts from the county. That may be slightly lower than the total available, as the trustees approved a proposal from

Freeport-based Columbia Equipment Company to build the three red shelters for $19,500 — meaning each municipality would kick in just shy of $10,000. LaPointe described the shelters as aluminum squares measuring 5 feet by 7 feet — the ridership numbers don’t justify building big shelters, he said — without benches inside. “Benches attract people who want to take a nap,” he said. Port Jefferson officials often contend with loitering vagrants or drunken people. There are frequently homeless people sleeping on the few benches around the area. While the village could choose to put in benches down the road, LaPointe noted that because the shelters are small, leaving

out a bench would improve access to the shelters for people in wheelchairs. The shelters would be installed at the three points along the jitney route: at its start uptown on the east side of Oakland Avenue, near the Long Island Rail Road station; on the north side of Arden Place close to East Main Street; and at the harborfront park off East Broadway. Those shelters are going to be red so they match the color of the shuttle bus. “The shelters will really brand it — red jitney, red shelter,” LaPointe said. The bus service, which resumed on Memorial Day, will keep trucking until Labor Day. Fare is $2, but children under 12 can ride for free. When the jitney first started running in

summer 2014, the village board saw the shuttle as a way to connect the vibrant downtown and the struggling uptown areas. “It’s a good way to start bridging the gap between upper and lower Port,” Mayor Margot Garant said at the time. “We’ve got to get people circulating back up and down.” Port Jefferson Village parking committee chairman George Westbay had originally presented the concept as a year-round service to link uptown and downtown, given the village’s push to revitalize the upper Port area and with a new apartment complex going up on Texaco Avenue to bring in more residents. He also saw it being used by visitors who could take the LIRR to Port Jefferson and then use the bus to go to a waterfront festival, for instance, instead of using a car.

Texaco’s new look is a world apart Tenants rush uptown to The Hills at Port Jefferson By ElAnA GlowATz

Videos

If you build it, they will come. Port Jefferson developer Rail Realty LLC proved that old adage when Rob Gitto, from its parent company, The Gitto Group, confirmed its uptown apartment project is already at full rental capacity — a month before it is even slated to open. Gitto said the 38 units in the first completed apartment building have been completely pre-leased, and there is a waiting list for the second building, which will add another approximately 36 units when completed next year. Most of those future tenants are affiliated with Stony Brook University in some way, Gitto said, whether they are graduate students, medical residents, professors, nurses, doctors or other staff. There are also a few people from John T. Mather Memorial Hospital’s new residency program. Officials broke ground on the much-anticipated project, dubbed The Hills at Port Jefferson, in May 2015, expressing hope that the first new development in upper Port would spur revitalization efforts in the troubled area. Village leaders have been trying to enhance the uptown’s Main Street corridor, between North Country/Sheep Pasture Road and the Long Island Rail Road tracks, with the goal of improving quality of life, making it more pedestrian-friendly and attracting developers and visitors. At the groundbreaking last year, Mayor Margot Garant said the 74 Texaco Avenue

Gitto thinks it’s already propelled other improvements. He said Monday that he has seen one nearby business making improvements to an existing establishment and two others sign leases to bring in new ones. “We wanted to see the area revitalized and we’re seeing it,” he said, adding about the rest of the uptown area, “We definitely hope they follow suit.” There are other community benefits attached: Under the conditions of the project’s approval, Rail Realty has to make improvements to a pocket park on the west side of Texaco that currently has a jungle gym, swings and a basketball hoop, as well as improve traffic flow in the area by redesigning the intersection of Main Street and Sheep Pasture Road.

Heritage Inn comes down

Construction has gone in phases. Last year, Rail Realty knocked down vacant homes and buildings along the east side of Texaco Avenue between Sheep Pasture Road and Linden Place to make way for the two three-story buildings — which will have a mix of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments — and began working on the northern building. That was completed recently, with the new apartments visible from some angles on Main Street, a block over. The developer got started right on the foundation of the second building, to the south. Garant announced the milestone at a village board of trustees meeting on June 6, saying people would start moving into the first apartment building in mid-July. Resident parking is underground, a noteworthy element for a small village in which having more cars than parking spaces has long been an issue. And toward the end of the second ongoing apartment construction phase, the developers will bring down

a building on the south side of the Texaco Avenue and Linden Place intersection, the Stony Brook Electric Inc. building, to make room for additional above-ground parking. That’s also when the park improvements will take place, Gitto said. Plans are still developing, but they might include landscaping, such as flowers and necessary irrigation, and taking down an unused shed there. For The Gitto Group — which has built up other parts of Port Jefferson, including an office building, the CVS and the Barnum House apartments on Main Street — things are falling into place faster than anticipated. Rob Gitto said the project was done in phases because the developers weren’t sure how well the first set of apartments would be received and how quickly they would be leased. “We knew it would be successful but we didn’t know it would sell that quickly.”

Bob Coughlan and Margot Garant, left, shovel up some dirt at the groundbreaking for The Shipyard apartments in Port Jefferson, above.

Just as one apartment complex uptown is reaching construction milestones, another downtown is joining the journey. Developers and Port Jefferson leaders gathered at the old Heritage Inn motel site on Tuesday to break ground on The Shipyard luxury apartments, a 112-unit building going up on West Broadway near the Barnum Avenue intersection. They had started taking down the decrepit motel in mid-May, with Mayor Margot Garant getting into an excavator and smashing down the machine’s arm onto the roof of one structure at the site, a task she referred to afterward as “cathartic.” She and TRITEC Real Estate Company principal Bob Coughlan had also used sledgehammers to smash some windows. Previously called the Residences at Port Jefferson, the project calls for a three-story apartment building comprised of 42 onebedroom apartments and 70 two-bedroom units, with resident parking underneath the structure. The building will take up less

than half of the 3.74-acre property, which borders Old Mill Creek, to leave room for landscaping and buffers. During the groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, Coughlan, who lives nearby in Port Jefferson, said the apartments will “clean up a blighted property” and help keep young people living and working on Long Island. “There is a desperate need for housing of this type, particularly in walkable communities,” he said. “We are thrilled to be part of this.” Garant also spoke at the ceremony, saying that having people living on the west end of the village year-round will support the businesses on that side of town, because they will eat in local restaurants and shop in local boutiques. “This project is going to become a huge economic engine for us year-round,” the mayor said, adding that it could become home to both young professionals from Stony Brook University and elderly Port Jefferson residents who want to downsize without leaving the area. Coughlan estimated The Shipyard would be finished in 18 months.

Shooting is second violent crime between homeless By Elana Glowatz A homeless man shot another in Port Jefferson Station last Saturday afternoon, following what authorities called a dispute between the two. According to the Suffolk County Police Department, 22-year-old Alain Jean shot the victim, another homeless man of the same age, multiple times shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Union Street, which is between Hallock Avenue/Route 25A and the Long Island Rail Road tracks. The victim was treated for serious injuries at Stony Brook University Hospital. Police arrested Jean after the June 11 shooting and charged him with first-degree assault. His attorney, Hauppauge-based Donald Mates, did not return a call seeking comment. The incident is the second violent one between homeless people that police have reported in the area over the last several days. On June 7, officers arrested and charged a woman for allegedly stabbing her partner to death in a parking lot. Police said last week that 60-year-old Ada Robinson was arrested at the scene in the Home Depot parking lot on Middle Country Road in Coram, where she allegedly had fatally stabbed 55-year-old Ralph Anthony. She was charged with first-degree manslaughter. Patrol officers had responded to a 911 call close to 7:30 p.m. that day when they found the victim, who was later pronounced dead at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue. Both Robinson and Anthony were homeless, and they were “at least common-law husband and wife,” according to the Homicide Unit’s Lt. Kevin Beyrer. He said in an

interview last week that the pair had been a couple for a long period of time, but he wasn’t sure if the two were legally married. Robinson’s attorney, Ronkonkoma-based Jason Bassett, declined to comment on the case. She has previous charges of assault with a weapon pending against her, one felony and one misdemeanor, stemming from an incident in May 2015, in which Beyrer confirmed that Anthony was also the alleged victim. Her attorney in that case, Central Islip-based Robin Stanco, did not return a call seeking comment. Detectives are still investigating the June 11 shooting in Port Jefferson Station. Anyone with information is asked to call the 6th Squad at 631-854-8652.

Police Blotter Incidents and arrests, through June 12 Picking a fight with police

A 23-year-old man from Coram screamed at and made threatening movements and gestures toward multiple police officers during an incident at about 1 a.m. on June 12 on North Street in Mount Sinai, according to police. He was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct for violent behavior.

At Sylvan Avenue Park in Miller Place at about 8 p.m. on June 9, a 23-year-old man from Holtsville possessed heroin and hypodermic syringes, police said. When questioned by police, he provided a false identity and birthdate to avoid arrest for violating his parole, according to police. He was arrested and charged with seventhdegree criminal possession of a controlled substance and false impersonation.

A 61-year-old man from Port Jefferson Station exposed himself in the woods near a public park on Route 25 in Selden at about 3 p.m. on June 4, and again while

seated in a Nissan Sentra in the parking lot of People’s United Bank on Route 112 in Coram at about 7 p.m. on June 9, according to police. He was arrested on June 9 and charged with public lewdness and exposing his body in public.

They discovered he was driving with a suspended license. He was arrested and charged with second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. His license had been suspended 10 times prior to the arrest, according to police.

Sea bass fishing season to start earlier By Victoria Espinoza Black sea bass is back on the table, as of June 27. After public outcry for an earlier start to summer sea bass fishing, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced this week the season will start 19 days earlier than the previous July start date. The DEC has blamed federal regulations and management for the reasons behind originally closing the fishing season during June, despite plentiful numbers of bass. “In spite of abundant populations, DEC is being forced to alter the commercial and recreational fishing seasons in order to meet federal quotas,” Acting Commissioner Basil Seggos said in a statement. “By allowing for an earlier June opening, we’re trying to strike the best possible arrangement for the recreational fishing community.” U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called for modifications to the summer fishing period last week at an event on the North Shore, speaking against what he called “inflexible” and “outdated” federal regulations for black sea bass fishing. “After a slow start to the black sea bass season, mostly due to weather, our Long Island commercial fishers are ready to bounce back and access the plentiful supply of sea bass,” Schumer said at the event. “But instead they might fall flat if the feds and the state don’t throw them a line and let them do what they do best — fish.” And Long Island fishermen said the July start date was hurting their livelihood.

“It’s a disaster for conservation and the economy,” said James Schneider, a boat captain in Huntington. “It’s crushed us.” Schneider is catching other fish since the last black sea bass season ended on May 31 and said he has been forced to throw back the bass he inadvertently catches. Those die shortly after, he said, further contributing to a loss in potential profits. Some fishers were also upset that Connecticut’s black sea bass season, which opened on May 1 and runs through Dec. 31, allowed fishermen to start earlier than in New York, as they share a body of water in the Long Island Sound. Sean Mahar, the DEC director of communications, last week acknowledged fishing got off to a slow start in New York. Through May 21, only one-third of the May

Fishers can now catch black sea bass earlier this summer, but the minimum fish length has increased an inch and the number they can catch is limited for the first month.

quota had been harvested, “with approximately 42,000 pounds [still] available on May 21,” Mahar said in an email. “However, the harvest rate increased dramatically the last week in May,” and the DEC had to receive more population data before deciding to open the summer fishing season earlier than July. Although fishermen like Schneider can now get back to bass fishing earlier, the DEC has also increased the minimum size of the bottom feeders caught by 1 inch — making the new minimum length 15 inches — and reduced the daily possession limit from eight fish to three. However, that latter change will only affect the fishing season through August, so fishermen can have up to eight in September and October, and 10 in November and December. According to the DEC, it also considered a July 8 opening with a five-fish limit, but anglers opted for the earlier start with a three-fish limit for a longer season. The DEC also said the federal government’s population assessment of sea bass has caused scientists to “exercise extreme caution when determining harvest limits,” which has forced New York to reduce sea

bass harvest despite an “abundance of fish.” The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission is one of three organizations that jointly manage black sea bass fishing, by determining the quota for sea bass each year. The quota this year was set at about 189,000 pounds. Kirby Rootes-Murdy, that commission’s senior fishery management plan coordinator, said obtaining accurate population data on black sea bass poses a challenge because black sea bass are a hermaphroditic species, meaning they change sex from male to female. “The reproductive life history characteristics … of black sea bass make it difficult to develop an accurate abundance estimate, ultimately limiting the ability to develop reliable catch limits,” he said in an email. “Assessment scientists are working hard to develop models to address these issues facing black sea bass management.”

a new chemical rating system will inform people using dry cleaners in Suffolk.

Cleaning up the info Second law on dry cleaners brings in chemical ratings By Elana Glowatz

148189

North Shore customers will soon have more information about how their clothes are being cleaned. The Suffolk County Legislature recently approved a new law that will require dry cleaners to share information with customers about the types of chemical solvents they are using and the environmental effects of those solvents. Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket) had proposed the law, which passed on June 2. Under the new requirements, the county health department will categorize dry cleaning solvents, ranking “each chemical grouping based on both human and environmental impacts,” according to a press release from Hahn’s office. From there, during the existing annual inspections for dry cleaners, county officials will provide the businesses with color-coded signs that “indicate the cleaning methods and solvents used by each individual shop.” The dry cleaners would have to post the signs in their windows and behind their counters. On the government side, the health department will also have a website — the address of which will be on the colorcoded signs — with environmental and health information about different dry cleaning solvents and processes. “This bill empowers consumers and allows them to make more informed decisions, which in the end is good for all of us,” Hahn said in a statement. “While it is common for consumers to read food ingredient lists and nutrition labels and to search out reviews for other products, most are hard-pressed to find the time

to research details related to a myriad of dry cleaning solvents, figure out the exact solvent used by their cleaner and then investigate its potential impact on his or her self, family and environment.” County Executive Steve Bellone (D) still has to sign the approved bill into law. Hahn’s bill was related to a previous one she put before the Legislature, which was also approved in mid-April, to stop garment-cleaning businesses from using the term “organic” to describe their services because there are no set criteria for its usage in consumer goods and services and could be misleading. The legislator has given the example of dry cleaning chemicals that are harmful to the environment but might be referred to as organic because they contain naturally occurring elements such as carbon. “Organic in this context is a technical term, and does not mean chemical-free,” Beth Fiteni, owner of Green Inside and Out Consulting, an advocacy organization committed to empowering the public to find healthier alternatives to common toxins, said in a statement at the time the bill passed the Legislature. “This legislation in Suffolk County helps address possible confusion.” That law prohibited dry cleaners from using the term to advertise their services, with fines between $500 and $1,000 for violating the rule.

oBITUARIeS Theodore Haegele

Theodore H. Haegele, Ph.D., died peacefully on June 2 at Good Shepherd Hospice in Port Jefferson. He was a clinical psychologist in private practice on Long Island since 1973, with offices in Huntington, Commack and, for the last 30 years, on Townline Road in Hauppauge. Ted, or Theo, as he was known as a child and in earlier life to his family, dedicated his life to family and profession. He will be remembered as a passionate sailor who cherished his summers with his family on the waters of Long Island, Block Island and Vineyard Sound aboard his 35-foot sloop Necessity. Those who knew Ted will easily recall he reveled in critical thinking and avidly engaged in discussion and debate. His great fortune, however, was to become one of those rare individuals who truly loved every day of his working life and was invigorated by the relationships he forged helping

his patients through what he called the “hard work” of psychoanalytic therapy. He continued to see patients until his illness caught up to him, four weeks before his death. His warm, caring smile persisted to the end. He is survived by his beloved wife, Terri; his sons, Theodore Jr. and Gregory (Evelyn); their mother, Barbara Lee Haegele; his grandchildren, Jessica, Maxiillian, Theo, Thaddeus and Molly; and his stepson, Vincent Fiorello (Laura), and his son Thomas. He is survived by his brother Edmund, sisters Gertrude and Elizabeth, and seven nieces and nephews.

Edward Norris

Dr. Edward A. Norris, 87, of Port Jefferson, died peacefully on June 2. He was predeceased by his wife BettyLou and is survived by his loving son Robert (Maureen) and his daughter Diane Pappas (fiancé Paul Hadley). His memory will forever live on in the hearts of his grandchildren, Lexi and Calli. Edward was born on May 9, 1929, at Rockaway Beach Hospital. He was the son of Baxter and Helen (Climenson) Norris.

He attended Columbia University for both undergraduate and medical school and did his residency at New York Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan. Edward and Betty Lou moved to Port Jefferson in 1960, to accept a position as an anesthesiologist at both John T. Mather Memorial and St. Charles hospitals in Port Jefferson. He would go on to become director of anesthesia from 1979 until his retirement in 1992. Dr. Norris was a respected and much-loved doctor at both hospitals for more than 30 years. Ted, as he was known outside the walls of the hospital, was an accomplished sailor, avid gardener and successful investor in the stock market. The family requests donations be made to the FSH Society, 450 Bedford Street, Lexington, Massachusetts 02420 or www. FSHSociety.org.

Timothy Dopkins

Timothy Matthew Dopkins, 52, of Jacksonville, Florida, has died. He was born on April 11, 1964, in Booth Memorial Hospital in Flushing and grew up in

Port Jefferson Station. Timothy was the purchasing manager for Carmax Corporation. He attended Clinton Avenue Elementary School and JFK Middle School, and graduated from Comsewogue High School. He went on to graduate from SUNY Geneseo. He is survived by his parents, Ronald and Alice; twin brothers, Ronald and Rodney; children, Alec and Kaylee; lifelong partner, Karen; niece, Amanda; nephew, Brandon; and many other family members and friends. His brother, Christopher, preceded him in death. Arrangements were entrusted to the Bryant Funeral Home of Setauket. Brookhaven board approves nitrogen protection zone law By Alex Petroski The quality of the water on Long Island is worsening, and the Town of Brookhaven took an important step to reverse that trend. The town board voted unanimously to approve a local law proposed by Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) that establishes nitrogen protection zones within 500 feet of any body of water on or around Long Island. The zones will prohibit new structures or dwellings being built in that range from installing cesspools or septic systems, effective in January 2017. “We’ve all watched our waters degrade over the last 50 years,” Romaine said after the vote at a town board meeting held on June 9. “We all know part of the problem is nitrogen.” Romaine has long been an advocate for improving the island’s water quality on the town and county levels. He addressed the problem at his State of the Town address in March. “Nitrogen from our sanitary systems, our lawns, our golf courses and our farms is impacting our bays and harbors, our freshwater lakes and streams and our drinking water,” he said. “The solutions to this problem are neither easy nor cheap. But doing nothing is not an option; we must act now. Our future depends on us addressing this problem.”

Representatives from three nonprofit organizations focusing on water quality spoke in support of the law last Thursday. “I’d like to congratulate you guys and commend you again on your environmental leadership,” George Hoffman of the Setauket Harbor Task Force said. “It’s timely. It’s needed and I’m glad that you’re moving forward with it because there just seems to be a lot of stuff going on with harbors and waters and nitrogen but nothing seems to be getting done. So this is a good thing to see that you’re actually seeing it through and that there will be an ordinance here that will start to change what’s going on in our waters.” Kevin McAllister of Defend H2O and Doug Swesty of the Sea Run Brook Trout Coalition also spoke in strong support of the law. “It’s critical that you do this because of the glaciated terrain in which we live on here in Long Island, that 500 feet represents approximately two years of travel time from the time something enters a cesspool or septic tank within a 500-foot radius until it reaches the water body,” Swesty said. “Groundwater travel times here are about two to three feet a day. So it’s critical that we implement something to protect our waterways from discharges that are put into the groundwater.” According to the town’s website, there has been a 93 percent decline in Great South

File photo

the town is taking steps to reduce the amount of nitrogen in its groundwater. Bay clam harvests as a result of brown tides, which are brought about by nitrogen seepage. The island’s bay scallop industry has collapsed almost entirely due to nitrogencaused algal blooms. These issues are in addition to the overall decreasing quality of Long Island’s water. The law will have an added provision protecting homeowners who incur damage

thanks to a disaster like Hurricane Sandy, allowing them other options should requiring the purchase of a new system be a source of financial hardship. Third District Councilman Kevin LaValle (R-Selden), who is in favor of that protection, supports the law as a whole. “I think it’s a great goal we’ve set for the town and for other towns as well,” he said.

OPINION Editorial It’s not hard to find dirty spots in our local waters. Photo by Elana Glowatz

Letters to the editor It’s getting worse This picture was taken at 4 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon as I was dropping off my wife for the train to NYC. I read in the news that a homeless woman was hit and killed in the street June 5 in Port Jefferson Station and here are two more homeless sleeping at the Port Jefferson Long Island Rail Road Station. Homelessness can have many causes but can include the dangerous and mentally ill. This makes me nervous for my wife who I am dropping off. I was also nervous for my mother getting home late from the city last night, and this is also a terrible eyesore for anyone who comes to visit the town we are so proud of. This is a dangerous situation for residents and visitors, and a major issue for anyone trying to promote tourism and commerce uptown. Is anyone working to address an issue that seems to just be getting worse?

Water issue drops after proposal is poo-pooed

There’s no time to waste. Actually that’s not true — Suffolk County residents have plenty of time to add our own waste to our water supply, and we do it every day. That’s why it bothers us that Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone’s proposal to charge a $1 water quality protection fee for every 1,000 gallons of water that homes and businesses use will not be on the ballot for voter approval this November. He has estimated it would generate roughly $75 million each year toward the environmental cause. Normally, new taxes and fees bother us even more, but these dollars would not be just thrown into the general fund. The plan was to put the money toward expanding sewer systems in Suffolk County — a dire need — and reducing the nitrogen pollution in the water we drink and in which different species live. Much of Suffolk relies on cesspools and septic systems that can leak nitrogen from our waste into the ground. Nitrogen is in the air and water naturally, but high levels are dangerous. One harmful side effect of nitrogen is increased algae growth, which decreases the water’s oxygen supply that fish and other creatures need to live and produces toxins and bacteria that are harmful to humans. According to Bellone’s administration, state lawmakers would not get on board with the idea to put his water surcharge on the ballot so the voters could make the final decision. Officials said more time was needed before the proposal was brought to a vote. On the county level, Republican lawmakers also stood strongly against the proposal. Most people use 80-100 gallons of water each day, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, so some people may have had to pay up to an extra $37 a year under the fee proposal. Big whoop — if it could help us stop poisoning ourselves and the rest of the ecosystem, we’ll pay up. We’re disappointed this measure won’t be on the ballot this year. But it could be an opportunity for Bellone to show some leadership by making sure progress is made before 2017. Instead of worrying about being disliked for adding $37 to residents’ water bills each year, he should just take the tough action and enact the surcharge. We’ve already waited too long to get rid of our cesspools. Let’s not waste any more time and water.

Anniversary was made more special

I am writing regarding the article by Alex Petroski on May 26, “Still married, 40 years after hospital wedding.” I want to thank Mather Hospital for acknowledging our 40-year connection between the hospital and our marriage. reception in our honor. Thanks also go to President Kenneth Roberts for attending and a special thank you to Mr. Arthur Santilli whose kindness and caring made the wedding possible 40 years ago. It was wonderful to see him. I would also like to thank the Port Times Record for following the events. The article gave us the opportunity to share the event with our family and friends, making our 40th even better than it was.

Joanne J. Wolter Farmingville

Happy to have shared my spare and raised awareness I am extremely thankful for all the good wishes that have come my way since the article “Jane Bonner donates kidney, gives gift of life,” (May 26, page A12) ran in your newspaper. What started as a very personal and private decision to help a friend has grown into a public display that I certainly did not expect. Happily, the result of all the publicity has been an increased awareness of kidney disease and the call for people to “share the spare” by donating a kidney to someone in

need. As your story indicated, “more than 80,000 people are currently on the waiting list” for a new life-saving kidney and hundreds more are added each day. So, I encourage any healthy adult to be tested to see if they are a good candidate to be a donor. My friend Tom D’Antonio is recuperating well and his body has accepted the new kidney. He has expressed his gratitude to me so many times, but honestly, I am grateful to him for giving me the opportunity

to really make a difference in someone’s life. If any of your readers would like to learn more about how to “share the spare,” they can visit the United Network for Organ Sharing website at www.unos.org. Finally, I would like to thank the Times Beacon Record Newspapers for helping to bring this very important issue to the forefront.

opinion A shockingly violent attack on gay America

I

am you and you are me. We, the people of this country and this planet, share something people hundreds of years before and hundreds of years hence can’t possibly have in common with us: now. What defines “now”? Labels. We are tremendously caught up in them. Who are the good guys and who are the bad guys? And then, something happens, something unimaginable in Florida, and it’s clear at least By Daniel Dunaief one person directed his hatred toward one particular group. This was an attack on the gay community. Other labels will undoubtedly stick and motives will

D. None of the above

undoubtedly be uncovered, but it was an attack on gay America. Sure, it was terrorism, because it was terrible and it was shockingly violent, but it was, first and foremost, an attack on a community. There’s a moving scene at the end of the Kevin Kline film, “In & Out,” at a high school graduation in which everyone stands up and says they are gay in support of Kline, who is on the verge of losing his job because of his sexual orientation. As we watched a moving Tony Awards ceremony, I hoped someone would step to the microphone and say, “I’m gay and anyone else who is gay today, please stand with me.” I’m sure the entire audience would have stood up. For today, tomorrow and for the foreseeable future, we are all gay. We are all lesbian, bisexuals and transgender. We are like the Danish people who, legend has it, put yellow stars on their clothing to make it impossible to distinguish Jewish Danes from fellow Danes during World

War II. There is some debate about whether Christian X, the king of Denmark, put the Jewish star on his clothing. What is clear, however, is that the Danes did what they could in a horrible time to save their citizens from discrimination and death by helping them escape to Sweden. In the here and now, with so much blood, so many tears and such incomprehensible loss, there is something we can do for our fellow Americans: We can be gay. I’m not suggesting we all need same-sex partners, merely, that the label that seems so toxic to some applies to all of us. We live with such random acts of terror and violence. Far too often, the president of the United States has become the Mourner in Chief. Maybe, instead, he should be gay, too. Let’s not wait for a reluctant and divided Congress to act and to take action on guns, or on hate, or on love. Let’s embrace and understand each other. There will be plenty of people pointing fingers. The FBI was

watching this killer through different points in his life. Did they miss anything? I’m sure there’ll be plenty of people who will suggest that if the clubgoers had had guns, this killer wouldn’t have been as effective because someone would have been able to take him out before he did all that damage. Is that really what we want, a bunch of people in a club with guns? Would that really make us safer? It’s a bit like the mutually assured destruction argument during the Cold War. Maybe it was so irrational to consider destroying the world that no one pushed the button, but we still have all those weapons and there is still plenty of hate and fear. We and the former Soviet Union spent billions on weapons when those resources might have cured cancer, improved food crops or developed cheaper, cleaner energy. So, how do we stop the hate? We stand up, we unite, we share — and we recognize that I am you and you are me.

Father’s Day history lesson of a Confederate rebel, and father

O

n the eve of Father’s Day, here is an adventure story of a father along with a slice of little known history about the Civil War. His name was Newton Knight, he was a poor Southern farmer and he led a revolt against the Confederacy from deep in the heart of Dixie. Proving that not all residents in any one region think alike, Knight and as many as 1,000 other farmers in Jones County, Mississippi, By Leah S. Dunaief waged an effective guerilla war against the Confederate troops and declared loyalty to the Union. Whenever Confederate troops came after him and his band of like-minded white men, they would just melt away into the swamps of southeastern Mississippi and disappear to fight another day. Then, in the spring of 1864, “the Knight Company overthrew the Confederate authorities in Jones County

Between you and me

and raised the United States flag over the county courthouse in Ellisville,” according to an article in the March issue of the Smithsonian magazine. “The county was known as the Free State of Jones, and some say it actually seceded from the Confederacy,” the article maintains. There will soon be a movie about this remarkable footnote of history, to be called “Free State of Jones,” starring Matthew McConaughey as Newt Knight. By all accounts, Knight was a remarkable military leader. He certainly was a remarkable father, who had nine children with his first wife, Serena, who was white and from whom he eventually separated. He also had five children with his grandfather’s former slave, Rachel, entering into a scandalous common-law marriage, and according to the magazine, “proudly claiming their mixed-race children.” Jones County was poor at the time of the Civil War, with only 12 percent of its population made up of slaves, which probably somewhat explains its lack of loyalty to the Confederacy. It also was marked with what the Smithsonian article calls “a surly, clannish independent spirit.” Today it is 70 percent white, still rural and its inhabit-

ants earn low or modest incomes. And while there is a Confederate monument next to the columned courthouse in Ellisville, there is no mention of the anti-Confederate rebellion that Knight led. In fact, Jones County is described by some of its inhabitants as the most conservative place in Mississippi now, and some disown Knight. Yet some of the younger people in the county think of Newt Knight “as a symbol of Jones County pride,” according to the article. “Knight was 6-foot-four with black curly hair and a full beard—‘big heavyset man, quick as a cat,’ as one of his friends described him. He was a nightmarish opponent in a backwoods wrestling match, and one of the great unsung guerilla fighters in American history. So many men tried so hard to kill him that perhaps his most remarkable achievement was to reach old age. ‘He was a Primitive Baptist who didn’t drink, didn’t cuss, doted on his children and could reload and fire a double-barreled, muzzle-loading shotgun faster than anyone else around,’ said a local historian. ‘….There’s good evidence that he was a man of strong principles who was against secession, against slavery and pro-Union.’”

Knight actually enlisted with a group of locals in the Confederate Army at the start of the war; a biographer speculated that he relished being a soldier. But many of them, including Knight, deserted from the Seventh Battalion of Mississippi Infantry after the passage of the “Twenty Negro Law,” which exempted one white male from conscription for every 20 slaves owned on a plantation, making it what locals called “a rich man’s war and a poor man’s fight.” When they returned home, they found the Confederate authorities where taking what they wanted from the wives in the name of the war effort—“horses, hogs, chickens, meat from the smokehouse and homespun cloth.” There was a mass meeting of the deserters, and they organized themselves into the Jones County Scouts. Knight was unanimously elected their captain. They vowed to resist capture, defy tax collectors, defend each other’s homes and farms, and do what they could to aid the Union. Their ranks swelled, they waged guerilla warfare successfully against the Confederate war effort, and that is the way they, led by Newton Knight, entered the history books.

Clockwise from above, Tori Reid in stride during a previous meet; Reid leaps over a hurdle during the st. Anthony’s invitational; and Reid receives a post-season award.

Warrior improves by leaps and bounds Tori Reid finishes 9th in state pentathlon competition By Joseph Wolkin Comsewogue senior Tori Reid headed to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association girls’ track and field championship looking to make history. Reid set her sights on the prize, focused on winning as the lone member of the Warriors to head to Cicero-North Syracuse High School. Finishing runner-up in the Section XI division championship in the triple jump with a leap of 36 feet, 8 inches, and in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.43 seconds, the athlete advanced to states, attempting to become the third pentathlon champion in the school’s history. Previously, her best finish in any event during the tournament was fifth, which came in the hurdles last year. Although she didn’t become a champion, she placed ninth overall, and is happy with how far she’s come. “I was proud of myself because I was seeded 13th going into the

competition,” Reid said. She placed fourth in hurdles in 15.36, 19th in 100-meter run in 2 minutes 2:44.07, and fifth in shot put with a throw of 27 feet, 2 inches. “I definitely could have run better. I definitely could have thrown better,” she said. “It wasn’t my best, but I did the best I could in the two days, especially since it was raining on the second day. I think I did pretty well overall.” With two 100 hurdles victories in the spring — one on April 30 during the Westhampton Beach Invitational and the other at the St. Anthony’s Invitational on May 6 — Reid emerged as a leader entering her final months with the Warriors. She earned six wins during the winter, with four of them coming in the 55 hurdles, and a pair in the triple jump. Her work ethic propelled her to break the school record for the triple jump, reaching 37 feet, 7.75 inches on Jan.

‘I was proud of myself because I was seeded 13th going into the competition.’ — Tori Reid 31 during the Section XI Small School Championships at Suffolk County Community College.

According to head coach J.P. Dion, who joined the team at the start of this season, Reid’s emergence as a team leader is spreading positivity among her peers. She helps get everything organized, and showed up to all but two of the approximately 80 practices this season. “She’s definitely the captain of the team,” Dion said. “She comes to practice every day and is a leader. I think when the kids see her doing really well — see her at practice everyday, putting the time and effort in to become better — I think her dedication rubs off on kids.” And he said she took that role on herself. “I didn’t have to designate her as that person,” he said. “She is very good with communication. It’s through her dedication that something like that came about.” Dion took over for longtime coach Matt Brown, who worked with Reid during her first three years at Comsewogue. “Matt Brown would kid a lot and joke around, but Dion is kind

of hands-on,” Reid said. “Usually, there was no captain and the seniors just took control, but I knew that with a new coach coming in, I didn’t want my girls thinking anything was going to be different. I stepped up to make them feel comfortable.” This year, Reid set a personal record of 15.23 in the 100 hurdles en route to her St. Anthony’s Invitational victory. The 2015-16 season was her strongest since joining the Warriors, earning eight wins in 30 contests, compared to four in her previous seasons with the team. Reid will be attending Winthrop University in South Carolina in the fall, joining her sister Sabrena, who will be a junior. Although she only worked with her new coach for a short period of time, she will take with her some invaluable lessons she’s learned along the way. “ [Dion] taught me that in the end, he can’t do anything for me,” she said. “I’ve learned to be more independent while competing. It comes down to me.”
