Jailed veterans get a second chance on LI Eight percent of U.S. inmates have served in the military.

By Alex Petroski In Suffolk County, veterans who have found themselves on the wrong side of the law now have a rehabilitation resource in a peer setting. Veterans returning home from military service abroad often struggle assimilating into everyday civilian life. Suffering with post-traumatic stress disorder and other emotional difficulties, some land in prison — for crimes such as those related to substance abuse — because of difficulty coping with the transition. Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco (C) announced the Incarcerated Veterans Re-Entry Initiative at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in Yaphank recently. DeMarco spearheaded the new initiative along with Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay (D-Holbrook), Judge John Toomey of the county’s Veterans Treatment Court, and veteran mentors from the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 11. A block of cells, also known as a pod, within the correctional facility will now be comprised completely of veterans, who will have access to mentors and other services provided by the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center and others, as well as the added benefit of being around others with similar backgrounds and experiences. According to the sheriff, about 8 percent of inmates in the United States have served in the military. And there are about

Brig. Gen. richard sele speaks on the importance of treating veterans with care. 174,000 military veterans living on Long Island alone. DeMarco said in an interview after the event that Vietnam veterans have been approaching the sheriff about establishing a dedicated jail pod for many years, similar to what has been done for the adolescents who are separated from the rest of the jail population, but the county’s overcrowded facilities made it a challenge. “Veterans who have served our country and have been honorably discharged, the lowest point of their lives [is] if they get in-

carcerated,” DeMarco said, adding that the program will focus on getting incarcerated veterans treatment through various nonprofits for PTSD, addictions or any other mental health problems their experiences in the service contributed to. “I think we owe that to them. They put their lives on the line for us.” Brig. Gen. Richard Sele was the keynote speaker and said it is important to treat these veterans with sympathy. “As soldiers, in addition to the wide range of regulations and policies that we follow, we hold our soldiers accountable to values — very high values,” Sele said. “As a leader and someone who has commanded at various levels, I’ve done so in a very firm and fair manner. But one thing I’ve learned over the years is that you also have to show compassion. You can still be firm and fair and show compassion.” Ralph Zanchelli, of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 11, has been visiting jails on Long Island to serve as a mentor to veterans for about 16 years, and he spoke on behalf of the group. “Housing veterans together is so very, very important,” he said. “They will be able to communicate with each other and

support each other. We should never forget, when someone serves the country they sign a blank check, pledging to protect and serve the people of the United States of America, willing to give up their lives — and many have.” New York State Sen. Thomas Croci (RSayville) spoke about the importance of rehabilitating returning soldiers with mental health issues. “I don’t know of any population of citizens that we would rather have reintegrated into our communities and into our society,” he said. “These are exactly the people that we want back in our communities, running our businesses, sharing their experiences in school as teachers, and in law enforcement.” DeMarco addressed the possible criticism that everyone should be held accountable for breaking the law without preferential treatment. “They’re being held accountable for their crimes, there’s no doubt about that,” he said. “They have to go to court. They’re going to be charged. They’re going to be sentenced. They’re not getting off easy. We’re just giving them a better place and services while they’re incarcerated. DeMarco likened this jail block to a similar one established in 2011 for 16- to 22-year-olds, which included rehabilitative efforts and mentoring. He said the incarcerated population from that demographic has dropped 75 percent since then.

The unopposed trustees, D’Abramo and Miller, secured their fourth and second terms, respectively. Miller has listed his goals for a new term as pushing for the Port Jefferson power plant to be upgraded, to keep it a viable form of energy and property tax revenue; making the village more energy-efficient; and strengthening the power grid to better withstand storms. For his part, D’Abramo wants to revitalize the uptown area and improve the village’s infrastructure.

Port Jefferson residents shook up the village court on Tuesday night, voting for a new justice to take over the bench. In addition to re-electing Trustees Bruce D’Abramo and Bruce Miller, who were running unopposed, to their positions on the village board in this week’s election, voters chose attorney Tara Higgins to serve out the three years remaining on the term of former Justice Peter Graham, who died in office late last year shortly after being reelected to his judgeship — and after more than 30 years of service. Candidate Bill Glass had been appointed to serve in Graham’s place until an election could be held, but he lost his bid for re-election, with only 330 votes to Higgins’ 390 votes. A third challenger, attorney Scott Zamek, garnered just 158 votes. The defeat is a repeat for Glass, who also lost a try for the village bench against Graham in 2011. Higgins, a 50-year-old East Setauket native, has lived in Port Jefferson for 18 years. Her connection to the village goes further back: the Tara Inn pub uptown, owned by her father, was named for her. A graduate of Seton Hall University

Big bust uncovers bomb manual, Nazi materials By DEsiréE KEEGan Assault rifles and bomb-making instructions were just a few of the items found inside a Mount Sinai home last week. At 6 a.m., on Miller Place Middle Island Road, brothers Edward and Sean Perkowski were arrested after authorities executing a search warrant uncovered a .40-caliber Glock, six assault rifles, four rifles, 25 high-capacity magazines, one shotgun, one stun gun, more than $40,000 in cash, approximately 4 ounces of marijuana, approximately 26 grams of illegal mushrooms, 14 knives and between 3,000 and 5,000 rounds of ammunition, Nazi material and a self-made manual on how to make bomb. The Nazi-related material included framed photos of Adolf Hitler, Nazi flags with swastikas and books on white supremacy. Edward Perkowski, 29, currently faces drugs and weapon charges, and Sean, 25, was charged with an outstanding warrant. “This was a public threat on multiple fronts,” Suffolk County Police Commissioner Tim Sini said. “We have two individuals who clearly subscribe to a hateful, violent ideology, who had an illegal arsenal at their fingertips.” Although unable to discuss the details of the case as the investigation is still ongoing, such as if an event to use the arsenal of

nazi items and weapons, above, were allegedly found in the Mount sinai home of Edward Perkowski, inset. weapons was planned, whether they’ve been cooperative or if they were working alone or as part of a group, Sini said the department is currently working with the Joint Terrorism Task Force, which is made up of local police department and federal agencies, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

“Today’s search warrant might have prevented a deadly, violent incident, like the one we recently saw in Orlando,” Sini said. He asked residents for help keeping Suffolk safe: “We can only do our job most effectively if we have your cooperation and your collaboration.” John Leonard, a neighbor who has lived two houses down for 18 years, said there was a brawl out in front of the home a couple of months ago, and 911 was called. When he saw the public police report following the search warrant, he went to police

headquarters to offer his help. “I’ve never spoke to them, we keep our distance,” he said. “There’s four or five cars parked in front [of the house] at all times and constant cars coming in and out. I had my car broken into in the driveway about a year ago. My neighbors had the same thing. We found prescription medication laying out in the street a couple of months ago. It wasn’t too hard to figure out something is going on.” What he said horrified him, though, was the large bomb-making manual found, which included hand-written and printed out material. “That scares the hell out of me,” he said. “That takes it to a whole new level.” While Sini cannot say what pointed the department in the direction of the home, the commissioner explained it took time to get probable cause to establish a case, and tips from residents have been instrumental in much of the police’s recent findings. He said more than 600 tips on drug homes and drug spots in local communities have come through the 631-852-NARC hotline. To report any information regarding the suspects from the Mount Sinai case, call 800-220-TIPS. “We took two dangerous individuals off the street and we’ll fully investigate and prosecute this case,” Sini said. “We’ll spare no cost and no time. The fact that this is in our backyard is very concerning. That’s why the message today is to the public. Regarding criminal activity, please call the tips hotline or 911 immediately.”

Dan Colasanto hurls a pitch from the mound during his tenure on the Comsewogue baseball team.

A recent Comsewogue High School graduate was seriously injured last Thursday, June 16, when he was hit by a car on Route 25A. The Suffolk County Police Department said Dan Colasanto was in the roadway around 1 a.m. that day, on a stretch near Westgate Drive in Mount Sinai, when an eastbound 2010 Honda hit him. The 18-year-old pedestrian, a Port Jefferson Station resident, underwent surgery for serious injuries at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson and was later moved to Stony Brook University Hospital. The driver, a 48-year-old Miller Place woman, was not hurt, police said. Colasanto graduated from Comsewogue in 2015 and went on to the College of Saint Rose in Albany. During his high school days, he was a star pitcher and third baseman on the baseball team, as well as a strong hitter. He also played for the Warriors football team. Detectives from the SCPD’s 6th Precinct are investigating the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call them at 631-854-8652.

Clockwise from above left: Shannon Christ, Marianna Spentzos, Casey Nevins and Eric Ranaldi are their schools’ top students.

Comsewogue and Port Jefferson high schools have named the students at the top of their classes. Port Jefferson Station’s Casey Nevins is the valedictorian at Comsewogue High School, with a 100.90 GPA. She is headed to Lafayette College in the fall, though she is unsure of what field she will study. During her time at Comsewogue, she has participated in many clubs, as well as in theater, music and volunteering programs. She is a member of the National Honor Society, English Honor Society, Science Research Club and Tapestry Women’s Choir, all while serving as treasurer of Drama Club, president of Bringing Unity Through Youth Club and director of Coffee House Charity Production. “Balancing a myriad of activities along with a demanding academic curriculum is the essence of what Casey is about,” according to her guidance counselor, Brenda Bell. “Casey has a radiant smile and a heart of gold which she shares with her peers, teachers, and community. She will undoubtedly bring her strong leadership, academic discipline and abundant values to all of her future endeavors.” The Comsewogue salutatorian, Eric Ranaldi, is heading on to Baruch College to study economics. During his time in high school, he played saxophone in the music program and has participated in numerous clubs and societies, including National Honor Society, Jazz Band, Bringing Unity Through Youth Club, varsity tennis, French Honor Society, Pep

Band and Tri-M Music Honor Society. Bell said he “has a distinct drive and allegiance to his studies coupled with a witty sense of humor that endears him to those around him. His friendly, global, open-minded, and analytical nature will lead him to great success in both his personal and professional life.” Over in Port Jefferson, valedictorian Shannon Christ made her mark at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School with a 101.02 GPA. She was named an AP Scholar with Distinction, participated on the varsity cross country and varsity winter and spring track teams, and is on the executive board of the National Honor Society, an officer of the TriM Honor Society and a member of Science Olympiads. Outside of the school district, she has danced ballet, tap, jazz and point. “She is an extraordinary student who gives her best effort in and out of the classroom each day,” the school district said. In the fall, Christ will head to Fairfield University to study mathematics, with a minor in secondary education. The salutatorian, Marianna Danae Spentzos, came in a close second with a 100.59 GPA and is also an AP Scholar with Distinction. She is a member of the Interact Club, the Tri-M Honor Society and the National Honor Society, and an All-League athlete as the varsity volleyball captain in her senior year and a member of the varsity track and field team. “She is an excellent student who has consistently earned top grades,” her district said. Spentzos will study biology and marine science at the University of Miami.

School board hires temporary head Suffolk educator with 41 years under his belt to fill in as superintendent By ElaNa Glowatz A longtime educator will lead the Port Jefferson school district as it searches for a permanent replacement for outgoing Superintendent Ken Bossert. During its meeting on Tuesday night, June 14, the board of education hired Paul Casciano to serve as interim superintendent, a year after he retired as the head of the William Floyd School District on the South Shore. “We felt that he had tremendous experience,” board President Kathleen Brennan said in a phone interview on Wednesday,

Casciano’s fast facts • Served as William Floyd

head from 2006-2015 • Earned a doctorate in education from NYU • Scheduled to serve Port Jeff through next June

June 15, referring to Casciano’s 41 years in education, from teacher to superintendent at William Floyd. “He certainly has a grasp on all levels of what it takes to run a district.” The board hired Casciano to serve from July 1 through June 2017, during which time the board, while receiving input from staffers and other community members, will be searching for someone to work more long-term. In a phone interview on Thursday, June 16, Casciano said although he had retired from being a superintendent, he continues to teach and work. With his wife working and his kids mostly grown, “I thought the conditions were right.” The Stony Brook resident has education degrees from Central Connecticut State University, Southampton College, C.W. Post and New York University, according to his resume. He joined the William Floyd administration in 1982 as an assistant principal and slowly worked his way up to superintendent, a role in which he served from 2006 to 2015. “They needed help so that they could select the best candidate to meet the needs of the school community,” Casciano said about

meeting with Port Jefferson school board members to discuss the position. “It just seemed like we were all on the same page.” He joked that Port Jefferson “made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.” He does not want to use his time in Port Jefferson keeping things “status quo” and just sitting back and watching, he said. He is interested in “continuing to move the district forward even if it’s in the short-term.” “How much I personally could accomplish? I’m not sure,” Casciano said, but he hopes the superintendent who succeeds him will keep moving forward. On a personal note, Brennan called Casciano “a very nice guy — very down to Earth.” Bossert announced his plan to leave Port Jefferson earlier this year and become the new superintendent in Elwood. He had been at the helm for five years, during which time there have been other changes in leadership throughout the district. Tom Meehan was brought in as the elementary school principal, first on an interim basis and then as the permanent leader, then Antonio Santana and Matthew Murphy were hired as principals of the Middle School and high school, respectively, when those two

Both Santana and Murphy have since moved on to other schools, with Robert Neidig replacing Santana and Christine Austen replacing Murphy. “With the current leadership team in place, I know that the district is in very capable hands,” Bossert said in his farewell letter to the community.

In Memoriam Myron C. Ledbetter

M

yron Calvert Ledbetter died at his home in Belle Terre on June 1, at the age of ninety- two. He had been an active and well-known member of his community for many years. Myron was born in Ardmore, Oklahoma on June 25, 1923, the son of the late Robert and Adeline Ledbetter. Myron was a freshman at Oklahoma State when World War II began. During the summer of 1942 he earned a commission as an ensign in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to LST 947. His ship was part of the invasion of Okinawa and occupation of Japan. Upon his discharge Myron returned to Oklahoma to finish his studies in plant biology at Oklahoma State, then realizing he needed further education in his chosen field of plant biology, went to UC Berkeley for a Master’s Degree. Myron worked as a Research assistant at Boyce Thompson Institute in Yonkers, NY while pursuing his PhD work in botany at Columbia University. To further his specialized work on the plant cell research, Myron then went to Rockefeller Institute to work with Dr. Keith Porter to develop new techniques on the electron microscope. A year later to continue his research, he went to Harvard University with Dr. Porter’s team. Working with the electron microscope, Myron and Dr. Porter published many new important findings, ultimately resulting in the publication of an atlas of plant cells “Introduction to the Fine Structure of Plant Cells.” Finally in 1965 Myron accepted a position as a cell biologist and ultimately senior cell biologist at Brookhaven National Laboratory where he stayed until his retirement in 1989. Myron was a highly respected cell biologist and well known for his work on the electron microscope. He and Dr. Porter published research in 1963 on the discovery of a new organelle in plant cells, the microtubule, which initiated a whole new area of plant cell biology research, a discovery so significant that fift y years later the July 2013 issue of the scientific journal “Plant Journal” devoted its entire issue to the importance of this finding. Myron and another colleague Robert Dell invented a self-cleaning aperture to correct a problem with the electron microscope, a gadget which saved hours of down time of the microscope and is still widely in use. Myron was elected as the president of the Electron Microscopy Society of America for 1978. That Society also awarded him the Distinguished Scientist Award, Biological Sciences, for 1996. Myron possessed a keen inquiring intellect and had a seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of and interest in many areas. He was particularly interested in social justice and human rights and established the Myron C Ledbetter Diversity Scholarship at Oklahoma State University. In 2000 he was given the OSU Distinguished Alumni Award. Myron enjoyed theater and classical music, travel, reading, book discussion groups, entertaining and dining out. He and his life partner of over 55 years, John D’Aquila who predeceased him in 2014, had been subscribing members of the Metropolitan Opera and the Roundabout Theater Company for many years. In Port Jefferson they particularly enjoyed Theatre Three. Myron was a co-founder of OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) at Stony Brook University and participated in many of its programs. He became interested in stained glass and created many beautiful imaginative pieces, some even based on his own microscopic plant cell enlargements. He was an active member of the memoirs group and continued as long as his health permitted. Myron traveled extensively. He and John had friends everywhere, including the group with whom he served in WWII. In 2012 Myron and John were married, an event which gave great joy to their family and friends. Myron was predeceased by his brother Robert. He is survived by a sister-in-law Marcia Ledbetter and by a cousin Margaret Garland, and by many loving nieces and nephews and by a host of lifelong friends. Myron Ledbetter was a gracious and kind man and a thoughtful friend. He will be greatly missed. Memorial donations in Myron’s name may be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, 1275 York Avenue, New York , NY 10065. Expressions of condolence may be sent to the Family of Myron C. Ledbetter c/o www.obdavisportjefferson.com A celebration of Myron’s life will be held on June 26, at the Belle Terre Community Center, Cliff Road at 11:00 am.

OpiniOn Editorial

Letters to the editor Don’t trust them

Police Chief Stuart Cameron and Commissioner Tim Sini display a confiscated bomb manual.

Your gut is probably right American leaders in recent years have often spoken about the U.S. having a hostile political and social climate; a climate in which people are not tolerant of others’ views and in which disagreements sometimes degenerate into verbal or physical assaults. Certainly many of us have encountered such instances or felt the sting of another person’s unprovoked hatred at some point in our lives, perhaps in the form of blind political opposition, religious intolerance or racial prejudice. And there have been times when an ideology has endangered our personal safety, such as when Dylann Roof killed nine people at a historic black church in Charleston or when Omar Mateen opened fire at an Orlando gay nightclub, murdering 49 and injuring dozens of others — and killing many LGBT people’s already tenuous sense of safety. Or when pro-Nazi materials were uncovered in a Long Island home alongside numerous weapons and a manual on how to make a bomb. The Nazis did not go away with the end of World War II; the disgusting, disturbing views of Adolf Hitler have lived on in people throughout the world, whether they specifically support the swastika or simply have similar ideas and values. So it’s hard to say whether two brothers who were arrested after authorities with a search warrant seized framed photos of Hitler, Nazi flags, and books on white supremacy — as well as guns, drugs and other items — from their North Shore home last week, were always Hitler fans or just persuaded by the recent U.S. social climate. Whatever the case may be, it’s important more than ever to be vigilant and to speak out when our gut tells us something is wrong. Mateen had been an aggressive person throughout his life and had made violent threats before, according to media reports. Some incidents were reported at the time and others not until our nation was picking up the pieces after he exploded at Pulse. Maybe things could have been different if more people around Mateen had the courage to speak out when he said troubling things or displayed violent or unstable tendencies. Suffolk County Police Commissioner Tim Sini said community tips helped authorities ahead of their raid last week at the brothers’ Mount Sinai home. One neighbor described knowing something bad was going on because of a brawl outside the home, cars coming and going at all hours and prescription medication found in the street. And that was not the first time neighborhood callers helped catch dangerous criminals in Suffolk, or anywhere else for that matter. Please, don’t be afraid of being wrong or sounding prejudiced. If you get a bad feeling about something, if you suspect something strange is going on, it probably is. Call the police — they are encouraging it — and help us keep our families and friends safe.

I just watched a televised ad for more union workers in a socially important career area. The message was “we can’t trust management,” “we need new laws.” How many times have we seen this and other similar messages? The crux of the problem is no we can’t trust management, but we can’t trust the unions either. Albert Shanker, the president of the United Federation of Teachers from 1964 to 1985 and president of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) from 1974 to 1997, was quoted, by print and other media as saying, “When schoolchildren start paying union dues, that’s when I’ll start representing the interests of school children.” While this may not be accurate, it is a fair representation of Shanker’s and other union leaders’ behavior. On the other hand, in 1988, Shanker was the first to propose charter schools in the U.S. Which side of Albert Shanker do we believe? For decades we have been told, by unions and their supporters, that if we hire more people and pay them more money, we will get better quality. When I went to public school, I routinely sat in classes of 36 or greater. There was one teacher per class and no aides. In the mid-20th century, roughly 90 percent of all the scientists who had lived, from the dawn of recorded history, were alive. A significant percentage of them began their education in one-room schools.

“We are now being told that if teacher evaluations aren’t sent to that bastion of honesty and integrity, Albany, Long Island school districts stand to lose hundreds of millions of dollars.”

Now let’s look at Common Core. Is it better or is it politicians doing what they always do — distorting the truth and catering to the masses in order to get themselves elected? You choose. We are now being told that if teacher evaluations aren’t sent to that bastion of honesty and integrity, Albany, Long Island school districts stand to lose hundreds of millions of dollars in “state aid.” I put state aid in quotes because that is our money, which has been taken from us.

If we can’t trust the politicians or the unions or management, if more teachers, getting paid more money under more and more questionable laws, have only seemed to make things worse, when are we, the parents, grandparents and general public, going to finally say, “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it any more?” This is an election year. Your vote does count. Use it well. But, that’s just one man’s opinion.

Those are mean streets in upper Port Jefferson

Mike Solo’s letter to the editor, “It’s getting worse,” in the June 16 issue, hits the nail right on the head. I started coming out on the Long Island Rail Road from Woodside to Port Jeff to visit my sister, who purchased a home in 1967. What a thrill to ride the diesels into the “country.” I grew up in the city. When I arrived almost every other weekend, it was exciting to see a town vibrant with quaint stores, tasteful clubs and other mom and pop stores. Oh, yeah

— the quaint little Port Jeff. Currently a new resident, I have noticed the decline of the neighborhood. It has changed with murders and undesirable characters on plenty of these streets. One of the street people came up to me on the street and asked if I wanted to buy guns. Puzzled, I asked him, “What kind of guns?” “Shotguns, pistols and sawedoff shotguns,” he replied. I declined his offer and reported it to SCPD.

I grew up in a tough Irish neighborhood called Woodside. We would have guys come around to sell fireworks July 4 but not guns. I still take the train to N.Y. frequently and have to arrive at Port Jeff station and walk a few blocks to my home. These are becoming mean streets here in upper Port. Let’s hope that plans will become realized to become a brighter area of commerce and quality of living.

Resolutions for the presidential election fight W e’ve got hot summer nights on the horizon. Come on, it’s an election year. In thinking about the days ahead of heated debates, accusations and counter accusations, I made some resolutions I’d like to share: • I resolve not to get too caught up in politics. No, seriously. I’m not going to count the days — 138, but who’s counting? — before the election. • I resolve not to study a single By Daniel Dunaief political poll between now and Nov. 8, which is, as I mentioned but we’re not going to talk about, 138 days away. • I resolve I will not watch too

D. None of the above

many debates when I have better things to do. I might need to clip my toenails. Or, maybe, a movie I’ve seen 20 times, like “Bull Durham” will be on TV and I’ll just have to watch that scene one more time when the players come to the mound to discuss wedding gifts and cursed gloves. • I resolve not to focus on the number of times either candidate calls the other one a liar. If they do, however, I resolve to imagine that candidate adding, “liar, liar, pants on fire,” to add some levity to the accusation. • I resolve not to worry too much that one of these two people whom I don’t particularly like will be president. Seriously, we’ve got all these people eager for power and these two are the best we can find? Not everyone wants to be president, but doesn’t this seem like the perfect time for a dark horse to throw his or her hat in the ring? • I resolve to avoid listening to pundits. I don’t want to hear how you absolutely think your candidate

won the debate and the other candidate completely lost the debate, the election and his or her mind the other night. Can you imagine two pundits watching everything you did in a day? Pundit 1: “Oh, he totally nailed that plaque on his teeth. He won’t need to brush his teeth for a week after a performance like that.” Pundit 2: “Are you kidding? Do you think he gave the molars any attention? I’ve spoken to the molars and they are feeling neglected. I have a way to brush that would fight for every tooth and not just the ones on top.” My only pundit exception is David Gergen: He’s smart and funny, has a deep authoritative voice and he’s really tall, so it looks like he’s observing everything from on high. Besides, in the early 1990s I met him, not to name drop or anything, and he actually listened carefully to a question I asked. • I resolve to do 10 push-ups every

June solstice: The day the sun stands still A s I sit at my desk, typing this column, I am enjoying the longest day of the year, June solstice. It will not get dark until almost 9 p.m., and the June light makes our world sparkle. Recently we have been living through some of the most beautiful days with temperature and humidity in the Goldilocks range: not too hot and not too cold. It is also the first day of By Leah S. Dunaief summer, a word that always brings a smile to my face. What do you think of immediately when you think of summer? I conjure up cherries, watermelon and corn on the cob; then there are ice cream, lemonade, lobster rolls and backyard barbecues for lots of socializing. Lest

Between you and me

you think that all I fantasize about is food, there are those luxuriously lazy days reading at the beach or at the pool ... and oh those sweet summer nights. Time seems to slow down a bit and we get to relax amid less structure in our lives. There are other reasons to be happier when the days are longer. Because we are phototropic beings, the presence of sunlight is important to us, more so for some of us than others. Many people suffer to varying degrees from seasonal affective disorder during the winter, when the days are shorter. Natural sunlight is a freely available mood enhancer, causing us to produce vitamin D, which in addition to helping with the absorption of calcium, also affects our levels of serotonin and melatonin and hence our feelings of satisfaction. When there is little sunlight, some people can suffer from depression. Light therapy, with specially designed lights and vitamin D plus melatonin supplements can combat SAD to a degree, although no one really knows why some are susceptible.

More affected are women, those living farthest from the equator (e.g., the Eskimo) and those with a family history. Chemical makeup, age and genetics also seem to be factors.

time I hear one of the candidates, in an advertisement or during a TV or radio news program, use the word “fight.” I figure if they argue that they’ll fight for me, I might as well fight for my own fitness. Maybe I’ll do 20 sit-ups every time I watch them shake their heads in frustration when describing the ridiculous and calamitous choice on the other side of the aisle. • I resolve to think of the two candidates as the leaders of their packs on a middle school playground. Each time one of them is emotionally wounded and levels accusations against the other, I will imagine that they are just going through a difficult phase in their political career and that they’ll be OK once they get to high school. • Finally, no matter what, I resolve to remind myself that the Constitution guarantees us checks and balances. That means, regardless of the final “winner,” other leaders can protect all our interests.

But there is no SAD during summer solstice. This is the time of the longest light, when the sun seems to stand still in the sky before reversing its direction for the rest of the year. Of course the earth rotates around the sun, rather than vice versa, and as the earth moves away on its axis, it seems the sun is moving lower and lower across the sky through the remaining six months. June solstice has inspired countless festivals, celebrations and religious events. Stonehenge, that mysterious megalithic structure in England, was clearly built to mark the solstices for the stones are lined up accordingly to receive the sunlight (there were some 12,000 people in attendance this year). Oops, I didn’t mean to get so carried away with technical stuff. Nonetheless, here’s another bit of trivia: This year the full moon — otherwise known as strawberry moon — coincides with the June solstice we are enjoying. Not since 1967 has that happened, apparently, and it will not happen again until 2062. See how special it is to be alive today!
