Kassay, Sheprow sworn in as trustees

BY RAYMOND JANIS EDITOR1@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Concluding a hotly contested election season in the Village of Port Jefferson, Rebecca Kassay and Lauren Sheprow were sworn into office for two-year terms on Monday, July 4.

Immediately after dozens of groups and community organizations paraded through the streets for the Fourth of July celebration, community members gathered on the front lawn of Village Hall for the formal swearing-in ceremony.

Members of Cub Scout Pack 41 performed the ceremonial raising of the flag, which featured a historic 46-star flag that was donated by the Squires family. For more on this flag, see The Port Times Record’s April 28 story, “Squires family heirloom returns to Port Jefferson.”

Following the flag ceremony, Mayor Margot Garant, Deputy Mayor Kathianne Snaden and Trustee Stan Loucks gathered on the steps of Village Hall to join their incoming colleagues. Barbara Sakovich, the Village clerk, administered the oath of office to Kassay

and Sheprow, who each took the oath while surrounded by family and friends.

Upon taking office for a second term, Kassay thanked members of the Port Jeff community for entrusting her to continue her work on the Village Board.

“Thank you everyone for being here today, for being a part of this village and for entrusting part of it with me,” she said. “It’s truly humbling to be entering my second term, and I am so very much looking forward to continuing to add strength to this already strong community.”

Sheprow, a first-time public officeholder, was surrounded by a sizable party of family members, including children, grandchildren and her father, former Mayor Hal Sheprow.

On a similar note as Kassay, Sheprow thanked the community members for their support. “I can’t express how grateful I am that the Village of Port Jefferson has put their faith and trust in me to represent them for these next two years,” the new trustee said, adding, “I hope that I can live up to that faith and trust.”

Port Jefferson Fire Department hosts Fourth of July parade

BY RAYMOND JANIS EDITOR1@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Amid picturesque weather, a convoy of fire trucks, tractors, music and dance groups and assorted vehicles marched through the streets of Port Jefferson for this year’s annual Fourth of July parade.

Hosted by the local fire department, the procession included a large collection of first responders. Joining PJFD were fire departments and ambulance corps representing Terryville,

Setauket, Mount Sinai and Centereach, among many others.

Also in attendance were dance groups that twirled and danced between fire units. In a strong display of patriotism, various community groups, volunteer organizations and hospital employees made appearances as well.

Hundreds of spectators lined the village blocks to watch the spectacle as it unfolded during the late morning. The parade lasted nearly two hours in its entirety.

Capt. Brian A. McAllister, chairman emeritus of McAllister Towing, dies at 89 SUBMITTED BY MCALLISTER TOWING Capt. Brian A. McAllister, a distinguished and visionary leader of the maritime industry, died in New York on June 29 at the age of 89. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Rosemary; his sons, Buckley and Eric; and four grandchildren.

A 1956 engineering graduate of the State University of New York Maritime College, Capt. McAllister went on to obtain a chief engineer’s license before changing careers to work as a deck officer. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War as Lt. Junior Grade and was executive officer on the USS Lake County (LST 80). In 2017, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science by his alma mater.

He was proud to be a member of the fourth generation of the family maritime company which had been founded in 1864, McAllister Towing. The company owns Bridgeport-Port Jefferson Ferry.

A repeated pattern of disaster, opportunity, and personal strength of character enabled Capt. McAllister to expand the company.

During the 1970s and 1980s, he established operations in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Louisiana, Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, Bonaire, Panama, and Peru.

Later in his career, he expanded the business to Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. This growth was driven by a mixture of navigational know-how, technological innovation, a cadre of excellent mariners, and a passion for investing in the transportation industry. He rarely boarded a vessel he didn’t love.

The 1970s and 1980s were also characterized by long years of labor strife.

The sharp downturn in the price of oil in the 1980s dramatically changed the competitive landscape throughout the industry. Hundreds of incidents of violence between union and non-union seamen were reported during this period. Capt. McAllister kept the company running by personally commanding vessels and piloting ship operations in New York, Philadelphia, and Norfolk.

In the 1990s, he was involved in acrimonious litigation over control of the company. In 1998, he became the first sole owner of McAllister Towing since its founding in a transaction that spun off its foreign subsidiaries. He used this reorganization as an impetus to completely rebuild the fleet. Under his leadership, the company designed and constructed numerous tugboats and ferries equipped with technologies such as flanking rudders, Z-drives, low emission engines, advanced fire-fighting, and emergency response, some

Late in life, the boy who went to college to play basketball discovered the beauty and importance of maritime history. In 2005, he supported the publication of an awardwinning title, “Tugboats of New York,” by George Matteson. In 2015, he participated in writing the book “McAllister Towing, 150 Years of Family Business.” In 2016, he was featured in “Heroes of the Harbor” by Marian Betancourt. In 2018, he was thanked

by Jennifer Egan for providing background for her book, “Manhattan Beach.”

Capt. McAllister served on numerous boards including the South Street Seaport Museum, the Maritime Association of New York/New Jersey, the National Maritime Historical Society, the American Bureau of Shipping, and the American Steamship Owners Mutual Protection and Indemnity Association. He was the recipient of many awards and honors including the 2012 National Maritime Historical Society Distinguished Service Medal, the 2013 Seamen’s Church Institute Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2015 Massachusetts Maritime Academy Maritime Person of the Year, a 2015 induction into the International Maritime Hall of Fame, and a 2017 Honorary Doctorate of Science from the State University of New York.

In his commencement speech to the 2017 graduates of SUNY Maritime, McAllister told the graduates that the secret to his success had been a good education, the willingness to take on new challenges, and the luck of having many friends to help him to seize opportunities.

He encouraged the Class of 2017 that some of the greatest assets to help advance their careers would be their classmates. He further counseled them with his enduring motto: “And keep the flag flying.”

Port Jeff board of trustees updates public on recreation, vandalism and local heroism

BY RAYMOND JANIS EDITOR1@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM The newly configured Port Jefferson Village Board of Trustees held its first public meeting on Tuesday, July 5.

Trustee Lauren Sheprow took her seat alongside her colleagues on the board for the first time. After completing her first full day in office, the trustee discussed ways in which she intends to familiarize herself with the mechanics of the village and learn more about the concerns of her constituents.

“I continue to take information in and I’ll continue to seek information from the residents, not because I am not campaigning anymore but because I am really interested in what they have to say,” she said.

Sheprow will jump headfirst into her first term of office, already securing two important assignments from Mayor Margot Garant: commissioner of communications and commissioner of recreation. Outlining her rationale behind these appointments, the mayor said she intends to tap into Sheprow’s professional experience in public relations and repurpose those skills in service to the community.

“We put her to work as commissioner of communications [because] we want to put her public relations experience and career to

work for us,” Garant said, adding, “And also as commissioner of recreation, so that she can help the recs department and because she was a former member of the recs committee.”

As well, Garant congratulated reelected Trustee Rebecca Kassay, who began her second term this week.

Kassay reported that she received a request to explore code changes related to the planting of bamboo as the roots of this woody grass can cross property lines and create conflicts between neighbors.

“This would address the planting of new bamboo as well as sort of being more clear about when someone has bamboo and it starts creeping over to another property line,” she said. “This is a big issue as far as property values can go and can help prevent neighborly disputes in the future.”

Trustee Stan Loucks delivered an extensive report on the status of the recreation department as it enters the height of its busy season. He announced that two tennis courts at the country club have been opened for pickleball and will remain minimally open throughout the summer until construction begins at the East Beach bluff.

“We anticipate that the construction of the lower wall along the bluff will be starting sometime in August or early September and if any part of this construction requires working

from the top, in other words, working from those tennis courts, then we’re going to have to close those courts,” he said. Loucks added that East Beach and its parking lot will also be closed off during the construction period.

Although golf membership at the country club has exceeded 630 members this year, Loucks said there are no plans to cap membership. He advised community members that while tee times are scarce between 6 and 11 a.m., there are plenty of remaining slots available after this time frame.

Deputy Mayor Kathianne Snaden used her report to address an ongoing issue related to the recently renovated public bathrooms at Rocketship Park. According to her, the bathrooms were vandalized just four days after they were opened, prompting the board to enforce a closing time for public use of the facility.

“The conclusion we all came to was that because of the vandalism that happened four days after opening our brand new, expensive bathrooms … it is best to keep them closed at 7 p.m. and to have a sign to say that they are closed at 7 p.m. due to the vandalism that is occurring,” she said. This signage will assure that the public knows “when they’re closed and why they’re closed.”

Snaden also informed the public that the village has renewed its intermunicipal

agreement with the Port Jefferson School District to allow constables on school grounds. She added that the roadway closure at the intersection of Route 25A and Arlington Avenue remains ongoing.

Garant recognized the village employees who worked to facilitate a smooth election day last month. She also acknowledged all of the candidates who ran for the village board and commended them for their continued commitment to the service of the village.

“I thank you for your involvement, for engaging, for getting out and knocking on the doors,” the mayor said. “You make a difference and we hope that you stay engaged.”

Garant also highlighted the monumental act of heroism on the part of a group of Port Jeff high school graduates. As reported on June 30 in The Port Times Record, these grads left their high school commencement ceremony to help extinguish a fire on Arlington Avenue.

“Brave is not even the word,” Garant said. “Community service is an understatement. … This really says what Port Jefferson is all about.” She added, “The fact that we do have a fire department that helps train our kids and that they are ready to serve under any circumstances is just absolutely amazing and encouraging and amazing to me.”

Norman Goodman, distinguished sociology professor, dies at 88

FROM STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY Norman Goodman, a distinguished teaching and service professor in the College of Arts and Sciences Department of Sociology who enjoyed a 56-year career at Stony Brook University, died June 26 at the age of 88.

Goodman, a member of the university’s founding generation who began teaching sociology at Stony Brook in 1964, was honored in August 2021 by the University Senate, which officially designated the Senate Conference Room in Psychology B as the Norman Goodman Senate Conference Room.

Admired not only for his dedication to his students and his field but also for his passion and advocacy, Goodman, a sociologically oriented social psychologist, was the first person in SUNY to be awarded two distinguished professorships — one for service and one for teaching. He was one of the early members of the Department of Sociology, and was active in shaping it from the beginning. Goodman chaired the department for 20 years (from 1973 to 1989, and again from 2000 to 2004), during which time he sought to recruit others to the department. Thanks to his years of service at Stony Brook and his active engagement in the university, Goodman advised the department

based on his institutional memory and firsthand knowledge of the procedures and policies.

Goodman also served as president of the Arts and Sciences Senate, twice president of the University Faculty Senate, served as vice president for the senate for three terms, and edited the SUNY University Senate Bulletin for more than 20 years. He was also active in the Executive Committee and Committee on Academic Planning and Resource Allocation, among others.

“During his over half-century of leadership at Stony Brook University, Norm helped several generations of faculty, staff, and students understand the importance of university governance,” said Nancy Tomes, SUNY distinguished professor of History and University Senate president from 20182020. “During my term as president of the University Senate, he inspired me and challenged me to do the best job I could.

Although we sometimes disagreed, we did so with deep appreciation for the other’s point of view. Norm was my mentor and my friend. I will miss him greatly.”

Frederick Walter, president of the University Senate from 2010-2014, said that Goodman was a significant presence and a “fount of knowledge” about the university and its governance. “Norm was adamant that the staff were as important to the university as

the faculty, and were owed a prominent role in governance,” Walter said. “We owe him a big debt of gratitude, and I for one will miss him.”

“Norm Goodman was a good man who was tireless in his caring for others,” said Edward Feldman, associate professor of Clinical

Family, Population and Preventive Medicine and University Senate president from 20142018. “He will be sorely missed. Those who knew him are better people as a result of our relationship with him.”

Goodman once said that he was particularly proud of his role in facilitating Stony Brook’s transition to a major, internationally renowned institution of higher education and being a major player in the effort to ensure that campus policies and practices are established through a process of shared governance.

Goodman was the author/co-author/coeditor of 10 books, including four textbooks in Introductory Sociology and two textbooks in Marriage and the Family. Goodman also served on the SUNY Distinguished Academy Board from its conception until his retirement last year.

“Norm was an inspiring figure, an impressive stalwart with a tremendous legacy,” said Nkiru Nzegwu, chair of the board of the SUNY Distinguished Academy and a distinguished professor at Binghamton University. “His thoughtful comments moved discussions forward, and his willingness to always speak his mind displayed his deep and abiding commitment to the Distinguished Academy both as an organization that represents the best of SUNY faculty and campuses, and one with an abiding mission of excellence that served the State as a whole.”

The New York State Department of Health has alerted New York health care providers so they have information regarding reporting and case testing.

Recent monkeypox cases in the region have involved a rash in the genital region and may include other symptoms such as fever, swollen lymph nodes, and pain when swallowing, before or after the rash appearance. Most infections last two to four weeks.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services announced July 1 the first individual confirmed orthopoxvirus, or monkeypox, case in Suffolk County. The person, who was seen by a local health care provider, is following isolation protocols from home. Testing for orthopoxvirus was conducted at the New York State Department of Health’s Wadsworth Center Laboratory.

Suffolk County health officials are communicating with the individual and will contact persons who may have been exposed. The case is one of 96 currently confirmed orthopoxvirus cases in New York State and approximately 400 in the United States to date.

“While the current risk to the general public is low, we urge the public as well as health care providers in Suffolk County to be aware that this rare virus has been found in the region and to know the signs and symptoms and manner of transmission of the monkeypox virus,” said Suffolk County Health Commissioner Gregson Pigott.

English degree leads to career path for one Port Jeff dentist

However, that’s exactly what happened to Dr. Jennifer Englebright, the speaker at the 2022 English Department Convocation at Stony Brook University. A dentist at Port Jefferson Dental Group, Englebright, who graduated from SBU in 2005, told attendees that she considered her “English degree to be of utmost importance in my career.”

“It prepared me in ways I could never have imagined, and its value has become an inherent part of my work,” she said.

The Setauket resident continued in her speech that her English degree helped with the human side of dentistry by giving her “the power and expression of language.”

“Communication is vital in helping to alleviate the stress and anxiety so many patients feel,” she said. “Uncertainty often drives fear, but by methodically explaining exactly what the procedure is, in such a way that the patient can really understand it, helps temper that fear.”

said it was the first in-person convocation since 2019, and Englebright was well received by students and faculty.

“While some of our outstanding graduates go on to careers in education, law or business, Dr. Englebright demonstrates that English is also great preparation for health care providers,” Newman said. “I think she would agree that she’s a better dentist for having studied Virginia Woolf with Professor Celia Marshik.”

Englebright said in a phone interview that many people don’t realize how versatile an English degree is.

“I found my English classes to be more inspiring for my career in medicine than science classes,” she said.

She agreed that reading the works of Woolf was a major influence in her life. Her senior honors thesis was about the author.

“She was all for women’s rights and women in higher education, trying to push and drive women forward to make their own money in their own careers,” Englebright said.

She also has been inspired by the poet William Carlos Williams who was also a doctor.

“I found writers like that to be actually more inspiring to go into medicine than just pure science,” Englebright said.

St. Charles Hospital prepares to open new wound healing center

Port Jefferson’s St. Charles Hospital will open its new Center for Hyperbaric Medicine & Wound Healing on July 18, as the hospital seeks to help people with chronic, nonhealing wounds.

The center, which will be located on the second floor of the hospital, will include two hyperbaric chambers that provide 100% pure oxygen under pressurized conditions and will have four examining rooms.

The chamber “provides patients with the opportunity to properly oxygenate their blood, which will increase wound healing and woundhealing time,” said Jason Foeppel, a registered nurse and program director for this new service.

Potential patients will be eligible for this treatment when they have wounds that fail to heal after other treatments for 30 days or more.

Residents with circulatory challenges or who have diabetes can struggle with a wound that not only doesn’t heal, but can cause other health problems as well.

More oxygen in people’s red blood cells promotes wound healing and prevents infection.

The treatment “goes hand in hand to deliver aid to the body’s immune system and to promote a healing environment,” Foeppel said.

St. Charles is partnering with RestorixHealth in this wound healing effort. A national chain, RestorixHealth has created similar wound healing partnerships with other health care facilities in all 50 states.

The new wound healing center at St. Charles is one of several others on Long Island, amid an increased demand for these kinds of services.

Partnering with Healogics, Huntington Hospital opened a hyperbaric chamber and wound healing center in May 2021. Stony Brook Southampton Hospital also has a wound care center.

“There’s a great need for this in our community,” said John Kutzma, program director at the Huntington Hospital center. “We know that there are 7 million Americans living with chronic wounds,” many of whom did not receive necessary medical attention during the worst of the pandemic, as people avoided doctors and hospitals.

Concerns about contracting COVID-19 not only kept people from receiving necessary treatment, but also may have caused nonhealing wounds to deteriorate for people who contracted the virus.

Although Kutzma hasn’t read any scientific studies, he said that, anecdotally, “We’ve had patients that had COVID whose wounds haven’t healed as quickly as nonCOVID patients.”

Patients at the Huntington Hospital center range in age from 15 to 100, Kutzma said.

People with diabetes constitute about one-third of the patients.

Treatment plan

For the hyperbaric chamber to have the greatest chance of success, patients typically need daily treatments that last between one and a half to two hours, five days a week for four to six weeks. While the time commitment is significant, Foeppel said it has proven effective in wound healing studies.

“We pitch it as an antibiotic treatment,” he said. “You want to complete that full cycle to ensure the body has enough time to complete the healing process.”

Kutzma said Huntington Hospital reviews the treatment plan with new patients.

In following the extensive treatment protocol to its conclusion, he said, “The alternative is to live with this very painful, chronic wound that may lead to amputation.”

Given the potential dire alternative, Huntington Hospital doesn’t “have a problem getting that kind of commitment.”

While the treatment has proven effective for many patients, not everyone is medically eligible for the hyperbaric chamber.

Some chemotherapy drugs are contraindicators for hyperbaric oxygen treatments. Those patients may have other options, such as skin grafts, extra antibiotics or additional visits with physicians for debridement, which involves removing dead, damaged or infected tissue.

“We invite patients to come in, go through the checklist and see what their plan of attack” includes, Foeppel said.

The cost of the hyperbaric treatment for eligible conditions is generally covered by most health insurance plans, including Medicaid and Medicare, he said.

The two hyperbaric chambers at St. Charles can treat eight to 10 patients in a day.

Aside from the cost and eligibility, patients who have this treatment frequently ask what

they can do during their treatments. The center has a TV that can play movies or people can listen to music.

“We don’t expect you to sit there like in an MRI,” Foeppel said.

As for complaints, patients sometimes say they have pressure in their ears, the way they would if they ascend or descend in an airplane. The center urges people to hold their nose and blow or to do other things to relieve that pressure.

Foeppel encourages patients to use the restroom before the treatment, which is more effective when people don’t interrupt their time in the chamber.

Prospective patients don’t need a referral and can call the St. Charles center at 631-4652950 to schedule an appointment.

Stony Brook resident keeps on running

BY RITA J. EGAN RITA@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM A familiar runner jogging along Stony Brook roads stands out from the others.

“My claim to fame is that I’m still running at 85,” Steven Fuchs said.

The Stony Brook resident said he has been running for more than 40 years, and earlier this year he traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, for the USATF 2022 Masters 5 Km Championships, where he placed first in the men’s 85-and-over category, finishing the race in 45 minutes, 31 seconds.

He was modest about the win.

“I was very excited about it,” he said. “It was great fun, but there’s not many people running anymore at my age.”

His daughter Dorothy O’Brien on the other hand was impressed.

“It’s pretty amazing,” she said. “I think it’s inspiring.”

Fuchs said runners who register trace their running history to find out what times they have achieved in past races. The grandfather of five said he believes this deters some from the national race because they aren’t inspired to travel when they see others signed up who have run faster in other races. However, he said it’s always fun to travel, get together with fellow runners and talk about their love of the sport.

Fuchs said when he was younger he was always competitive, and he recommended the sport as well as the races to others.

“It’s great exercise, and I enjoy it,” he said.

“People who are runners are wonderful people.”

Not one to slow down, Fuchs is still involved in real estate investment, which has been his decadeslong career.

To keep moving, he said, “is a great lesson in life.” And his advice is to “pick an activity that you can continue with.”

In the past, he played tennis but had problems with one of his shoulders, and he said he’s been lucky that his knees have held up so he can

Restaurant manager Ann Tipley said she was standing at the front counter when it happened, and the car stopped a few feet from her. She said it was scary to witness.

“Fortunately, no one got hurt,” she said. “It was just a big mess.”

The door has already been replaced, and Tipley said they are currently waiting for the glass for the door.

The Setauket Fire Department and police officers responded to the incident, and the driver and passenger of the SUV remained on the scene.

Staff members quickly cleaned up the broken glass, and the restaurant remained open for business.

He tries to do so daily to West Meadow Beach and back home, and is no stranger to the local races. His first race was one in the 1970s that started at Emma S. Clark Memorial Library.

Through the decades, he has participated in local races, including Soles for All Souls organized by All Souls Episcopal Church in Stony Brook, the Smithtown Running of the Bull, Lt. Michael P. Murphy Run Around the Lake in Ronkonkoma as well as several in Sayville.

While he sticks now to 5K races, when he was younger he said he ran longer ones, including the 10K, which is approximately 6.2 miles, and half marathons.

“As I get older, the distances tend to get shorter,” the runner said.

He’s learned with training that a runner has to take it easy at times.

“You can’t knock your brains out every time you go out to train,” Fuchs said. “I just jog around very slowly, and where I put my effort is the day of the race. That’s my real work day.”

His secrets to keeping fit through the years

include running and eating right. He also doesn’t smoke or drink alcohol.

“For me it has worked,” he said. “I’m lucky.”

He recommends running for those looking to stay in shape and his advice is to get the right shoes.

“You’re not necessarily in competition all the time,” he said. “You can go at your own pace. You can do it when you want to do it.”

Fuchs recommends the races as a good opportunity to get together with those who share the same interest, and he plans to travel to the national championships in 2023.

“I fully expect to be back again next year,” he said.

WWI housing for Port Jefferson’s shipbuilders

BY KENNETH BRADY DESK@TBRNEWSMEDIA.COM Following America’s entry into World War I, the number of employees at the Bayles Shipyard in Port Jefferson jumped from 250 in November 1917 to 1,022 in January 1919.

Since many of these workers could not find housing in the village, the United States Shipping Board campaigned to persuade the area’s homeowners to rent rooms to Port Jefferson’s shipbuilders.

A painting by commercial artist Rolf Armstrong was offered as a prize to the villager who did the most to alleviate the housing shortage. Since this and other efforts did not meet much success, the USSB retained architect Alfred C. Bossom to design cottages and dormitories in Port Jefferson for the burgeoning population.

Bossom recognized the urgent need to provide accommodations for the wartime labor force, his numerous commissions including the Remington Apartments highrise complex built for workers at the Remington Arms munitions factory in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

To secure a site for Port Jefferson’s housing development, the Bayles Shipyard purchased almost 16 acres of land just west of Barnum Avenue from Catherine Campbell in July 1918.

Nine detached, one-family homes were designed by Bossom to reflect the character of “old Long Island fishing villages” and erected along Cemetery Avenue, later renamed Liberty Avenue.

Bossom also designed a dormitory unit called the Plant Hotel since it accommodated employees at the Bayles plant. The Mark C. Tredennick Company, which had constructed buildings at the Army’s Camp Upton in Yaphank, was named the general contractor.

Now the site of Earl L. Vandermeulen High School, the Plant Hotel included 206 rooms, a cafeteria, powerhouse, athletic field and water purification facilities. A porch connected the three major wings of the complex.

the hotel soon became the center of social life for shipyard workers. A band was formed, a baseball team was organized and dances were held on Friday evenings.

In April 1919, the Emergency Fleet Corporation commandeered the Bayles Shipyard because of the unsatisfactory progress at the facility. The seized property, which included the Plant Hotel, was then sold to the New York Harbor Dry Dock Corporation.

When the new owners fired hundreds of shipyard workers, the number of boarders at the Plant Hotel dropped dramatically. To compensate for this loss, the hotel began offering rooms to transients by the day or week.

The Port Jefferson Times scolded the hotel’s new clientele for destroying electric bulbs, smashing wash basins, spitting on the floors and generally behaving as if they were hoodlums.

In December 1920, the NYHDDC shut down the Bayles Shipyard, dismissing all of its workers except for a skeleton crew. Confronted with a virtually empty Plant Hotel, the NYHDDC leased the complex to the Federal Board for Vocational Education, later renamed the United States Veterans Bureau.

The Plant Hotel, which had been extensively damaged by some departing boarders, was refurbished as a training center charged with teaching disabled soldiers and sailors.

The initial group of 125 veterans arrived at the Plant Hotel in October 1921. During a typical three-month stay, the men prepared for new careers and received medical care. For recreation, they were entertained by theatrical troupes, went on field trips and enjoyed Friday night concerts.

Despite pressure from local business groups and politicians, in June 1923 the Veterans Bureau left Port Jefferson as part of a nationwide plan to consolidate its rehabilitation facilities.

As demobilization continued, local businessman Jacob S. Dreyer purchased the Liberty Avenue cottages, which have changed hands several times over the years and are still standing. In July 1929, taxpayers in the Port Jefferson school district voted to purchase the Plant Hotel itself and the remaining 13 acres.

In subsequent elections, the citizens authorized the board of education to sell some of the hotel’s furnishings, grade the grounds and construct an athletic field on the site.

In June 1934, the taxpayers voted to

build a high school on the property.

The board of education quickly sold the Plant Hotel to a high bidder for $250.

Workers then demolished the building and hauled away the wreckage.

Kenneth Brady has served as the Port Jefferson village historian and president of the Port Jefferson Conservancy, as well as on the boards of the Suffolk County Historical Society, Greater Port Jefferson Arts Council and Port Jefferson Historical Society. He is a longtime resident of Port Jefferson.

In post-Roe America, locality is the mentality

“All politics is local.” This expression rings truer today than ever before.

The Framers of the U.S. Constitution envisioned a system of federalism for the United States — one in which the national government was assigned a select number of well-defined powers, with all other powers not delegated by the Constitution reserved to the states. Over the course of American history, however, more and more powers have been delegated to the federal government.

Right now, we are witnessing a turning point in a century-long power struggle between the federal government and the states.

Democratic presidents such as Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Lyndon B. Johnson incrementally augmented the size of the federal government and expanded the scope of its powers. After a century of concentrating power in Washington, the U.S. Supreme Court is now undoing that legacy, returning decisionmaking authority to lower levels of government.

Two recent SCOTUS opinions have dramatically altered the balance of power in this country. The court ruled in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion. In New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen, the court overruled New York State’s proper-cause licensing requirement for concealed carry of a handgun, making it harder for New York and other states to regulate concealed carry.

The one interconnecting theme of both of these decisions is that the federal government is yielding much of its power to the states, putting greater pressure on state and local governments to make decisions on behalf of the people.

No longer are the days of FDR, who saw the federal government as the vehicle to drive the national economy with his New Deal.

No longer are the days of LBJ, whose Great Society program sought to eliminate poverty and racial disparities using the federal government as its engine. In this post-Roe America, the power of the federal government is waning, taken out of its hands and placed in the hands of the states.

There are some possible benefits to the decentralization of federal power. For starters, this may reduce voter polarization and division in the United States. With fewer decision-making powers, the stakes will be reduced for congressional and presidential elections.

While national security and interstate commerce will always be the domain of the federal government, a host of domestic issues may soon return to the states, meaning state and local elections may soon carry much greater weight.

As power shifts away from the federal government and into our backyards, local residents must maintain an active interest in their state and local legislatures as these bodies will be deciding upon the issues that matter the most. Citizens can — and should — stay informed by reading their local newspapers, where information on these matters is most accessible. And they should remember to write letters to the editor because this remains a tried-and-true method to reach and persuade one’s fellow citizens.

Biden is not to blame for all

A couple of letters recently appearing in this paper blame President Joe Biden [D] for every problem under the sun, from a shortage of tampons to the cost of insurance. Maybe in the simplistic world the writers of these letters inhabit, the president of the United States is always to blame for everything that goes wrong.

First a couple of facts. Inflation is not confined to the U.S. The inflation rate of the EU and of Great Britain as of May 2022 was higher than that of the U.S., and Canada’s was only slightly lower. It’s a worldwide problem. Contrary to what one of these writers claims, most economists don’t consider the COVID relief package a major factor in inflation. Instead economists point to supply shortages caused by the pandemic, as well as Putin’s war in Ukraine, which takes a significant portion of petroleum and foodstuffs off the world market. If anything’s to blame it’s actually global capitalism, which, with its tight just-in-time supply chains, is structured for efficiency but not for resiliency. This may not be politically popular, but it’s true.

Those who blame Biden about everything seem strangely oblivious to a huge problem which has nothing to do with him: the threat to democracy. If we lose our democracy that’s the whole game. And we’re already well on the road to becoming a democracy in name only, like prime minister Viktor Orbán’s Hungary.

At the forefront of this is a Supreme Court packed with so-called justices placed there through political chicanery and selected by minority presidents. A court that just stripped women of a constitutional

right to make their own private reproductive decisions, instead subjecting them to be treated as mere incubators in the eyes of the law. What a giant step backward! A court that just hobbled our government’s ability to do anything about global warming, instead putting the bottom line of coal companies first. Another gigantic step backward!

What’s next? Laws against contraception or gay marriage? Crippling the government’s ability to ensure that our air is clean, our water unpolluted, our food safe to eat, our banks and financial institutions uncorrupted?

If you think none of this is possible, think again. It’s on the docket.

Most of all there’s the direct threat to democracy led by the former president and his big lie that he didn’t lose the election. Maybe these writers missed the Jan. 6 hearings.

They’re not being aired in full by Fox News, unlike other networks.

The hearings have made crystal clear that what happened wasn’t just a “protest” that got out of hand. Instead it was a calculated scheme to end our democracy by fraud and force, put in motion and led by the former president. It just missed being successful.

Those who think the hearings are all about “getting” Trump have it backward. What happens to Mr. Trump matters much less than what happens to our democracy.

The threat hasn’t ended. Even now there’s an effort underway to replace honest local and state officials who run elections with corrupt partisans willing to overturn election results they don’t like. And next term the Supreme Court will take up a case designed to give gerrymandered state legislatures the power to ignore state constitutions and courts altogether and impose their own

results in disputed elections. Think it can’t happen here?

A matter of freedom of religion, among other issues

Bravo!/brava! Your June 30 editorial [“A giant step backward for womankind”] is terrific. I’d just like to expand on a few of your points. You question whether the Supreme Court allowed religion to motivate them and say that people from various religious backgrounds debate when life begins. This is a crucial point. Judaism says that life begins with birth — not conception, abortion is not murder, the life of the mother is saved when the fetus threatens her physical or emotional well-being and a fetus resulting from rape or incest may be aborted. Other religions have other views and should be respected. This matter is one of freedom of religion among other issues. In a free and pluralistic society, each woman should make her own decision.

Politicians and courts should stay out of it.

Your editorial urges people to vote for candidates that will support freedom of abortion. I would point out that our Congressman Lee Zeldin [R-NY1], now running for state governor, has supported anti-abortion legislation which takes away a woman’s right to choose. He also would endanger us by applauding the Supreme Court striking down the 100-year-old New York law limiting guns. Finally, as an acolyte of former President Donald Trump [R], Zeldin voted against certifying the election. For all these reasons, he must not be our governor.

Modern messages for a modern reality

I

read bumper stickers, buttons, fortune cookies and messages on T-shirts. They are a form of poetry that captures a moment, an approach, an attitude, and a message in fewer words than some of the soupier birthday cards.

Like birthday cards, sometimes these messages work, are amusing, evoke a reaction, or make me laugh for intentional and unintentional reasons.

In the modern world, in which so many interactions seem less than optimal or contrary to the intentions, I D. None have some suggested messages that reflect of the above the current state of

— Please don’t interrupt. I’m in the middle of looking busy. When I started working many

years ago, someone told me to balance between looking busy and being under control. She suggested I walk quickly and purposefully, even if just to the bathroom, to suggest that I’m too busy to tackle something new that might involve lots of administrative work.

— Yes, I am talking to you. Those of you old enough to have seen the Robert De Niro film “Raging Bull” will understand this one instantly. This message captures the prevalence of confrontations.

— I have no idea what’s good. I don’t eat here.

Diners often ask waiters and waitresses, “what’s good.” More often than not, they tell people what’s popular dishes or their specials. The subtext here is that some of them don’t, can’t or wouldn’t eat where you’re eating, especially after spending considerable time in the kitchen.

— Everything and nothing is special today.

Keeping with the dining theme, while blending in some grade inflation, waiters could provide something philosophical for their diners to consume.

— I believe in building suspense. The

assignment, the job, or even the entree may be later than someone wanted. This message could suggest the tardiness was deliberate and was designed to enhance appreciation and add drama. So, you’re welcome.

— Sure, you can ask. I like the buttons people wear at Yankees games that encourage fans to ask a question. On a day when these customer service professionals are feeling tired or hung over, they could don messages that encourage people to move along or to figure out how to drive home to Pennsylvania from the Bronx on their own.

— How can I appear to help you? Life is all about optics. Yes, we should be helping and yes, people are paid to help each other, in person, on phone and on the Internet. Sometimes, the person (or artificial intelligence programs) that is offering assistance isn’t delivering much.

— I brought my own questions, thanks. I would love it if a politician wore this button to a debate.

On one level, it could suggest the candidate has questions that are hopefully substantive for his or her opponent. On the other, it could be an honest

way of acknowledging the disconnect between a question about the environment and an answer about the person’s commitment to family.

— What can you do for me? This is a way of turning the tables, literally, on a hostile or inappropriate customer. It also discourages people from asking too much of someone who is not eager to deliver.

— Is there anything else I can’t do for you? I’ve been on numerous calls with people who haven’t done anything, particularly when dealing with traveling details, who then ask if there’s anything else they can help me with. When they haven’t helped me with the first question, it’s hard to imagine they can help with a second. A more honest message might suggest that they also anticipate not being able to provide any help with a second problem or question.

— What did you get me for my birthday? People often want, or expect, something, even from strangers, on their birthday. They don’t often consider that the person from whom they expect service, help or extra treatment had a birthday they likely missed.

Remember that bit about pledging our sacred Honor?

Are you worried about what’s going to happen to our country?”

This question was posed to me by a younger person I know. He was clearly worried by current events, and with good reason. Our nation is facing a number of serious problems, and, in fact, so is most of the rest of the world.

His question made me think back to some of the chaotic times I remember. Polarization is a painful word being used to describe the United States today, but there were other times Between in my short lifetime when our country was you and me seriously divided.

BY LEAH S. DUNAIEF I have an early memory of signs hanging in our apartment house elevator. “Impeach Truman,” they urged. I don’t think I knew what they meant, but people on the streets were heatedly saying the same thing. I

knew Truman was president, but I certainly did not know anything about impeachment, and I had never before heard of Douglas McArthur, who had been relieved of his command in the Far East for disagreeing with Truman over Korean War tactics. That was a time of polarization, and tensions were high, even in my neighborhood of New York City. The Chicago Tribune editorialized, “The American nation has never been in greater danger.”

Our country moved on.

Everyone who was alive in the 60s well remembers the torments of that decade.

Both Kennedy and Martin Luther King were assassinated, civil rights legislation drove friends apart, the Vietnam War caused endless demonstrations and riots, and the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1968 was a frightful militarized spectacle epitomizing the nation’s divisions and chaos. It seemed our nation was being torn apart. People wondered if the country would survive.

Our country moved on.

There was Watergate in the 70s and a president of the United States was forced to

resign. There were long lines at the gas pumps and wild inflation with stagnation and American hostages in Iran.

Our country moved on.

You get the point. Severe problems have always periodically challenged America, our stability and our way of life. There have been those with evil intent and there have been true heroes. We have been challenged regularly, we have come together and we have moved on.

July 4th, we celebrated our independence, and the flag that belongs to all of us. In our small town America, up and down the Island, we paraded together, fire departments and police departments, conservatives and liberals, Blacks and whites and Latinos and Asians, gay and straight, lifers and choicers. We did so as Americans, proud of our nation despite its many faults, recognizing that we can make our country better even as we cheer the exceptionalism that makes immigrants risk and sometimes lose their lives to get here.

If you read through the Declaration of Independence, as I did this past weekend, you will see the values that bind us together. We must

not lose, in the struggles to find our way forward today, the respect in the ending sentence: “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”

Let us then start our healing not by putting power over country but by pledging to each other our sacred Honor. That will help unite us, to truly hear each other, and together we can move on. We always have, and together, we always will.

Port Jefferson School District congratulates Class of ‘22 The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Class of 2022 received diplomas during the 128th annual commencement exercises held on June 24.

The traditional color guard presented by members of the Port Jefferson Fire Department served as the backdrop for the ceremony. Principal Eric Haruthunian welcomed those in attendance and parents, siblings, friends, teachers, administrators and board of education members lauded the most recent alumni of the school district.

Salutatorian Hugo Onghai recited from Carl Sagan’s famous book, “Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space” and related it to graduating in 2022 and savoring every moment to come. Onghai shared appreciation for and thanks to many of the high school teachers as well as his fellow graduates. He was followed by parent speaker Lisa Scannell, who offered appreciation for her three children receiving their primary education in the Port Jefferson School District.

Valedictorian William Wu shared memories with his fellow classmates and words of powering through and overcoming the obstacles of the past few years.

Superintendent of Schools Jessica Schmettan took the podium to thank and congratulate each student and the special partnership of families in creating a great education for the students.

Haruthunian then presented the Class of 2022 to Schmettan and Board of Education President Ellen Boehm. Student walked to the podium to receive their diplomas while Haruthunian highlighted their personal achievements and post-graduation plans.
