As Long Islanders are warned about an uptick in Lyme disease, another tickborne virus has emerged in Connecticut across the Long Island Sound. Nearly 12 years ago, Eric Powers, a biologist and wildlife educator, noticed an increase in the tick population at Caleb Smith park in Smithtown, after pulling nearly 40 ticks off a group of his students. Powers conducted a survey of the park and discovered the population of tick predators had decreased, as feral and outdoor house cats either chased them off or killed them. “It’s becoming a huge nationwide issue with our wildlife,” Powers said in a phone interview. “Wherever people are letting their cats out, we’re seeing this disruption in ecosystem where these tick predators are gone.” But what Powers did not find was the prevalence of a tick-borne virus, the Powassan virus, which recently appeared in

Scientists take to shores to save horseshoe crabs Activists, politicians, volunteers taking closer look at declining population of Long Island’s ocean life By Alex Petroski

Horseshoe crabs have been on Earth for almost 500 million years, but their future is uncertain. Researchers like Matt Sclafani, a marine educator from the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Riverhead, said he believes that the species is in an alarming decline. “It’s a very important issue for a lot of reasons,” Sclafani said during a horseshoe crab monitoring session at West Meadow beach in Stony Brook on the night of June 29. Horseshoe crabs are a valuable species to human life, Sclafani said. Their blue blood is used for pharmaceutical purposes. Fishermen use them as one of the most effective sources of bait that exists. Sclafani called Delaware Bay the epicenter for horseshoe crab spawning activity, with Long Island coming in as a close second as one of the most important areas to the species on the East Coast, he said. Sclafani and his team of volunteers take to the local shores when the tides are low, usually in the middle of the night, to count and tag horseshoe crabs that come up to the shore to spawn. Sclafani was joined by Frank Chin, the regular site coordinator for West Meadow beach, along with Grace Scalzo, a volunteer, and Karen Papa and her sons — 12-year-old Zachary and

8-year-old Jonah. “We get a lot of volunteers for this program,” Sclafani said. “That’s the part I think is really great, too. We get people involved in their backyards. There’s not a lot of marine life that you can get involved with and handle this directly — that comes right out onto the beach for you without a net or fishing pole.” In all, the team tagged 55 horseshoe crabs over the course of the night, though that is nothing compared to the night on the South Shore when Sclafani said he and a team of about 35 volunteers tagged about CRABS continued on page A12

Tesla documentary making its Long Island premier By Talia amorosano

“Can You Believe Most Americans STILL Have Never Heard of Nikola Tesla?!?!” reads the subheading on the Indiegogo campaign Web page dedicated to increasing public awareness of the often overlooked inventor, not to mention raising funds for the restoration of Wardenclyffe, his last surviving laboratory in Shoreham. Film director Joseph Sikorski said he first learned about Tesla in a bookstore. “I was shocked that I had gone through the whole educational system without hearing about him,” he said. “He sacrificed so much for humanity. He needed to be vindicated.” For Sikorski, this vindication came in the form of a film, which is set to premiere on Long Island at ShorehamWading River High School this Friday, July 10, at 7 p.m. “Hopefully, by bringing attention to who he was and dispelling the myths, he’ll have his credit restored,” Sikorski said, regarding the effect he hopes his documentary, “Tower to the People,” will have on viewers. Thus far, Sikorski has been pleasantly surprised by the reaction his film has received after its first three screenings in New York City, Toronto and Belgrade. He described the response as “overwhelming,” noting that each venue had “standing room only,” and “people have been crying.” He said the Long Island premiere would be particularly special, “because it’s happening just a few minutes from where the tower was” and “because all the benefits from the screening will be given to the Tesla Science Center.” According the Indiegogo Web page, “Tower to the People” is about the past, present, and future of Nikola Tesla’s Wardenclyffe lab, a site from which the genius inventor dreamed of sending free wireless energy to the entire earth.” It features interviews with celebrity illusionist, Penn Jillette, of Penn & Teller; internet cartoonist, Matthew Inman, of The Oatmeal, who helped launch an online campaign to save the Shoreham site in 2012; awardwinning author, Jack Hitt; and Tesla’s closest living relative, William Terbo. The Tesla Science Center, the nonprofit group that now owns and maintains the site, raised nearly $1.4 million thanks to Inman’s viral campaign and purchased the property in 2013. Sikorski donated $33,000 to Inman’s “Let’s Build a Goddamn Tesla Museum” initiative. Even the most knowledgeable Tesla fan is sure to learn something new, as the film provides access to rare photographs and documents the first ever groundpenetrating radar investigation into the tunnels under Wardenclyffe. Sikorski said he hopes the film will motivate viewers to contribute to the effort to restore the Wardenclyffe property. According to Jane Alcorn, president of the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe, there are still hazardous conditions inside the buildings at this point. Ride denied A woman reported being harassed by a cab driver on June 30 at around 3 p.m. According to police, the complainant said she called a cab service to pick her up from a dollar store in Port Jefferson Station, but the driver refused to take her. Pills and pocketbooks A 26-year-old Sound Beach man was arrested in Selden and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and fourth-degree grand larceny. According to police, he was arrested on July 2 and was found in possession of Xanax without a prescription. Suffolk County police seek federal funding for body cams By Victoria Espinoza

While the Suffolk County Police Department has applied for federal funding to embed body cameras into its force, officials recognized that there is a long way to go in terms of establishing protocol and before officers start donning the devices. In May, the U.S. Department of Justice announced a $20 million Body-Worn Camera Pilot Partnership Program, with $17 million going toward competitive grants to purchase the cameras, $2 million for training and technical assistance, and $1 million for the development of evaluation tools to study the best practices. The pilot is part of President Barack Obama’s (D) proposal to invest $75 million over three years to purchase 50,000 body cameras for law enforcement agencies. The program’s launch follows a series of high profile incidents, including the deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., Eric Garner in Staten Island and Freddie Gray in Baltimore, Md., which raised questions of alleged police brutality. “Body cameras and new technology will not be going away, and if it benefits the officers and citizens of Suffolk County, we are interested,” Deputy Chief Kevin Fallon said in a phone interview. Lynch said in a statement. According to a camera implementation guide from the Justice Department, “by providing a video record of police activity, body-worn cameras have made their operations more transparent to the public, and have helped resolve questions following an encounter between officers and members of the public.” While the program seeks to protect officers and citizens, Fallon said there are issues and concerns. “This is more than simply about body cameras itself,” he said. Suffolk County Chief of Support Services Stuart Cameron said one of the biggest issues is how to store the videos. Not only would archiving be expensive, the volume of high definition videos would be “tremendous.” New protocols would also have to be established to determine how long a video is saved, and in what circumstances

Kuri also said people may use more natural remedies to deter ticks. “There are people who apply peppermint oil and rosemary mix that will help,” Kuri said. “But none of them are cure-alls.” He added that granular insecticides, like Dylox, help kill a variety of unwanted bugs including ticks carrying viruses like Powassan. There are two strains of the virus, which are carried by woodchuck and deer ticks. Since only about 60 cases of POW virus were reported in the United States in the past 10 years, Yeh said the chance of encountering POW virus is unlikely since the virus is rare. Symptoms of the virus include fever, headaches, vomiting, weakness, confusion, drowsiness, lethargy, partial paralysis, disorientation, loss of coordination, speech impairment, seizures, and memory loss. Other complications in infected hosts may possibly arise, such as encephalitis, inflammation of the brain and meningitis. Powers said he hopes to reduce tick population on Long Island through his quail program. He encourages local teachers, who use chicks or ducklings to educate their students about the circle of life, to raise bobwhite quails. He said releasing these quails annually will not only help them adjust to the presence of cats, but also control the tick population.

But Long Island POW virus incidences remain low despite the increase in tick population, according to Daniel Gilrein, an entomologist at Cornell Cooperative Extension. POW virus, which is related to the West Nile virus, was first identified in Powassan in Ontario, Canada, in 1958 after a young boy was bitten by an infected tick. Little is known about how much the tick population has exactly increased on Long Island, but Tamson Yeh, pest management and turf specialist for the Cornell Cooperative Extension, said it is unlikely cats are contributing to the increase by eating tick predators like birds. “Birds will eat ticks, but not all birds are insect eaters,” Yeh said in a phone interview. She said the snow cover during the winter months served as insulation for the ticks hiding in the ground, which helped them survive during the colder weather. Richard Kuri, president of R.J.K. Gardens, a St. James-based landscaping company, has not noticed an increase in tick population recently. Regardless, he and his men continue to wear long

Students within the Port Jefferson School District were recognized at the June 9 board of education meeting for earning the Presidential Service Award.

The 50 students, each of whom volunteered between 50 and 100 hours of their time to the Port Jefferson community, each received a certificate and medal.

Dr. Phil Riggio Dr. Phil Riggio, of Port Jefferson, died Tuesday night, peacefully. He was a longtime Setauket resident and internist, specializing in thoracic medicine in Coram and Port Jefferson Station. A wake will be held at Bryant Funeral Home, 411 Old Town Road, East Setauket, today Thursday, July 9, between 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. A Mass will be held at Infant Jesus R.C. Church in Port Jefferson on Friday, July 10, at 10:15 a.m. Interment will follow at St. James R.C. Church in Setauket.

Lyle A. Whitsit, 20, of Norwood, Mass., formerly of Setauket, died on June 3. He was born on Nov. 15, 1994, in Stony Brook, the son of Hugh Potter Whitsit and Lorilei Whitsit. Lyle was an auto technician. He was a member of the Three Village soccer team and the Sts. Philip and James track team. Lyle enjoyed boxing and cars (especially his 1984 Corvette), and he was a kind and outgoing young man. He is survived by his parents; his sister, Nicole; his twin brother, Jesse; and many other family members and friends. Arrangements were entrusted to The Bryant Funeral Home in Setauket, where services were held on June 11. Committal services were held at Cedar Hill Cemetery. think that’s so important.” More restricted areas, which Romaine is pushing for, could simply result in overharvesting in areas without restrictions, both Bowman and Sclafani said. There has also been some experimentation with extracting the blue blood while the animal is still alive, then rereleasing them into the water. This process is called biomedical harvesting. “That’s becoming a more and more controversial topic,” Sclafani said. “The biomedical companies have maintained that it’s a low mortality rate — about 10 percent … they might even be as high as 40 or 50 percent.” He also mentioned that there are concerns about the horseshoe crabs’ spawning activity after this process is completed. Bowman stopped short of saying that the extinction of the horseshoe crab would have a drastic impact on human life, but it’s not a good sign. “I was reading some very important news that’s coming out about the extinction of species on the planet,” Bowman said. “Species are going extinct at a huge rate. The cumulative effect is going to have a very bad effect on human civilization, far greater than we can imagine. We only see a little piece of it.”

many uses, including when, and when not, to film. “At what point does it become a privacy issue?” Cameron said. “Does a citizen’s right override protocol to continue filming?” There are more than 2,700 different types of sworn officers in the SCPD, including plain-clothes officers, detectives and chiefs. The department would need to determine if every type of officer would wear a body camera. Fallon and Cameron said the department would look at pilot programs across the country to see how they are handling the issues, and would also want to hear residents’ thoughts. If a grant is received, community meetings will be held to educate the public. Officers would have to be trained as well. “Giving clear information to the officers is important,” said Fallon. In 2012, a police department in Rialto, California

partnered with the Institute of Criminology at the University of Cambridge, in England, and randomly assigned body-worn cameras to various officers across 988 shifts. The study showed a 60 percent reduction in officer use of force incidents. The study also showed that shifts without cameras experience twice as many use of force incidents as shifts with cameras. There was an 88 percent reduction in citizen complaints between the year prior to camera implementation and the year following deployment. In the county police’s application, the department had to establish an implementation plan and a training policy. Fallon said he was unable to provide additional details. Police forces can expect to hear if they’ve received the grant by Oct. 1, according to the Justice Department. Joan LaRocca, a public affairs specialist for the department, said 50 law enforcement agencies, along with one training and one technical assistance provider, are expected to receive grants.

The process requires measurement, drilling a small hole into the shell, and then applying a round tag that has tracking information on it which is recorded. “I think the entire population up and down the East Coast is in trouble,” Larry Swanson, associate dean of the Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, said of the horseshoe crab population in an interview last month. “It’s in trouble for a variety of reasons including people overfishing the population, but also certain birds, including the red knot, are particularly prone to using them as a food source.” Sclafani said the consequences could be dire, if the crabs are not saved. “Their eggs are really important to the ecosystem,” Sclafani said. “A lot of animals feed on them, including migratory shore birds.” Town of Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) divulged plans to urge the Department of Environmental Conservation to expand restrictions on harvesting horseshoe crabs in May, to the chagrin of fishermen. Those plans have since been tabled.

“I’m just a man, but I’m a vital part of the food chain and I think I’m at the top,” Ron Bellucci Jr. of Sound Beach said in an interview last month. Horseshoe crab harvesting is a vital part of his income, he said. Local fishermen have also questioned the validity of claims about the declining population. The idea that the species may not be declining is not an encouraging sign to Malcolm Bowman, professor of physical oceanography and distinguished service professor at SoMAS, Stony Brook. He is also the president of Stony Brook Environmental Conservancy and the Friends of Flax Pond, two environmental advocacy groups. “We know in nature that things go up and down, and up and down, but you have to look at long-term trends; 10 years, 20 years,” Bowman said in an interview last week. “I’ve worked with fishermen a lot. They have to make a living, I understand that, but it’s important to keep communications between the scientists and say the fishermen with mutual respect, and that way we can learn a lot from them. We scientists are trained to have a long-term view. It’s not just this season, this summer, this breeding season. It’s a long-term view. I

That ability to be a leader earned her the Scott Hession Memorial Award, named after the former athletic director and boys’ basketball coach at Comsewogue, and given to a player that may not necessarily be the best player, but exemplifies what it is to be a leader. “If there was one kid that touched my heart this year, it was her,” Fernandes said. “She was a great leader. There was no animosity or hatred; it was all love. And that’s what I’ll remember most about Marissa Spinazzola.” Kinsley said she was looking for an immediate impact from Spinazzola. “We are losing a couple of defenders, so with her skill level and her work ethic, we’re looking for her to come in right off the bat and be an impact player for us, and I believe that she is definitely going to be that for us,” she said. “I’m excited about her coming in. We’re looking forward to preseason.” Spinazzola said she is looking forward

to her new athletic careers at Mercy, and also hopes to be able to not only make an impact, but also learn from and grow with her new team. “My goal is to step up, learn the game better than I already do, get playing time and be a unit with that team like I was at Comsewogue,” she said. “I learned from my coaches and tell myself that my stick doesn’t affect how I play, it’s the person behind the stick. When I think I’m having a bad day or something, it’s not my stick’s fault. I just know I need to focus harder to achieve my goals.”

Watching our waters Summer is in full effect, and if there is one unifying trait that many of us share across this Island, it is our attraction to the shorelines when the sun is shining. But let us float a reminder to our readers as we take to the water. It seems as if our newsroom has been flooded with reports of emergency responders braving the waves to save others. This week alone, we ran two serious aquatic accidents stemming from a rowboat colliding with another, much larger, vessel in Asharoken, and three kayakers who had to be rescued after being unable to get back to shore in Fort Salonga. These are prime examples of water-related mishaps we could easily avoid, if we took the proper precautions. So let’s wade through some simple solutions. The North Shore’s own Dr. James Vosswinkel, of Stony Brook Medicine, said he and his team treat more patients with injuries related to drowning or boating accidents during the summer than any other time of year. Most of these accidents, he said in his warning, could have been blocked by the simplest of safety measures. To keep young children safe around the water, Long Islanders can do things like designate someone to keep a constant vigilant eye on the young swimmers and install physical barriers or pool alarms to notify adults if kids accidentally fall in. For adults, doing things like never swimming alone, staying to predesignated areas of oceans or lakes, and never swimming under the influence of drugs or alcohol could do wonders to the rush of water-related incidents that wash through our news feeds. For boaters, avoiding things like drugs and alcohol should go without saying. Taking advantage of the various boating safety courses being offered in our community could also be of great help. Our own state Sen. Ken LaValle (R-Port Jefferson) has been pushing a free online boating course available through the state parks department website. Similar safety courses related to swimming and first aid are also available. Our proximity to the water is one of our most coveted perks of living on an island in the summer, but with that also comes great responsibility. There are enough threats that are more or less are out of our hands, like shark sightings, riptides or even a Portuguese man-of-war sting. The least we can, and should, do as beachgoers and water lovers is take the necessary steps to make sure we can all enjoy these perks safely. We need change TO ThE EDITOR: What is the record of Mayor Margot Garant and Trustee Laurence LaPointe? They have: 1. helped produce a 35 percent increase in taxes. 2. Supported a comprehensive plan that increases taxes, creates traffic gridlock, adds to parking problems, changes the village from home-ownership to rental community, delays emergency vehicles and is too developer-friendly. 3. Shown a failure to respond to the concerns of the residents’ Comprehensive Planning Advisory Committee and the Suffolk County Planning Commission. 4. Approved a contract with Lombardi caterers that reduces their rental fee at the Port Jefferson Country Club from $600,000 per year to $525,000, which results in a loss of $600,000 over the life of the contract. They also gave up our

right to a percentage of their profits and to examine their books. We also now pay for a portion of their utility bills. The village taxpayer is subsidizing Lombardi’s. 5. Accepted a single, low, lumpsum payment for future developers’ lack of on-site parking. 6. Considered 25 privately owned cabanas to be placed on our village’s beaches. 7. Refused to publish comments from residents of public meetings on the village’s website. 8. Not accepted residents’ requests for a public referendum on their comprehensive plan. 9. Wasted hundreds of thousands of dollars on out-of-town consultants without seeking resident expert volunteers. 10. Assessed an additional $125 to every country club member to subsidize the grill room operator. 11. Not performed an economic study to investigate the amount of taxes collected from new develop-

Swans and taxes TO ThE EDITOR: On June 1, I had occasion to see hundreds of thousands of dead fish in the Peconic estuary area, along with a dozen mute swans trying to stay in areas without floating dead fish. While fish are dying due to serious environmental mismanagement, it is my understanding that the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is in the process of exterminating

the mute swan, a graceful beautiful animal, which harms no one. This extermination will take place by oiling swan eggs and mutilating adult swans so they can’t fly out of harm’s way and be killed by foxes and other animals. There are about 2,200 mute swans in New York, with most of them on Long Island. It took about 150 years for them to get this level. They appear not to be prolific breeders. It is shocking that our public officials are allowing the DEC to

hen does what we do matter? More importantly, how do we handle the moments that matter? Each day, we go through so many activities that are so mundane as to require little to no concentration. We can walk to a deli, order a sandwich, nod at someone familiar on the street and engage in a conversation

with our boss on a cellphone. We have become incredibly adept at multitasking, making it so much easier not to focus on any one activity or even thought. We are not exactly grand masters of chess, thinking several moves ahead to gain an advantage over an ingenious opponent. We allow ourselves to wade through a pool of activities and decisions that are a collection of loose change jingling in our pockets. But then there are those days, hours or moments that turn the ordinary into something filled with so much electricity that the muscles in our legs that hold us up threaten to buckle. The thrilling and terrifying collide in our minds. Something real is at stake and the outcome isn’t predetermined, at least not as far as we know. We need these moments that matter, even if they make our mouths dry, send pinpricks to our fingers and make us feel as

if we can suddenly sense the rotation of the Earth. Why? How does leaving our comfort zone help? Well, for starters, it reminds us of who we are and what we want. Yes, she might say “no” and yes, we might not pass our driver’s test. So what? If this is what we want, the only mistake would be avoiding trying to get what we want because we might not get it. It’s easy to believe we are not ready or that we are not good enough. Why not roll up our sleeves and give it a shot? Maybe if we could convert all that energy and anxiety into something else, we’d feel empowered by big moments. Those pinpricks in our fingers might make them even faster and more nimble than we could imagine, allowing us to play the piano more efficiently than we ever have, while that racing heart and dry tongue could be just the kind of internal obstacles we need to overcome to

believe in ourselves. When these telltale signs return, they might become familiar companions on the road to something bigger and better. Butterflies feel strange in our stomachs because they give us the sensation we don’t get when we turn the ignition on for our car, when we pick up the phone and dial a number we know by heart or when we walk down a familiar hallway at work to hear our colleagues share views they have constantly offered for years. Maybe we need a few more butterflies in our lives. We need to feel something unusual and exciting, something bigger and brighter and something that shakes us up. Maybe we need to imagine seeing those butterflies outside of our stomachs and fluttering around us. While we take for granted that those butterflies are a sign of nerves, they are also an interesting choice. Butterflies fall in the same category as bunnies.

Why not roll up our sleeves and give it a shot?

We like them. If we can somehow imagine them fluttering just outside us, circling a room or a field, we can breathe deeply in the moment. When we look back on any given year, we can gain a new appreciation and perspective on these opportunities. They may not only define a time, but they may also help remind us that our lives are not just about the ordinary — they are about embracing and conquering the moments that matter.

hen I come across a wonderful story, I like to share it with you, and so I will tell you today about a Briton named Nicholas Winton. You probably don’t recognize his name because he told no one about his extraordinary deeds, not even his wife. It was only after she found a scrapbook, in the attic of their home in 1988, that the world began to learn of his courage and humanity defying Hitler on the eve of World War II. Winton was a London stock-

broker in December 1938 and about to go to Switzerland on a ski vacation when a friend, who was aiding refugees in the newly annexed Czechoslovakia, urged him to come to Prague. There, Winton found huge numbers of refugees, who were trying to escape Hitler, living in “appalling conditions,” according to The New York Times obituary on July 2 that told of Winton’s life. There was little hope of escape for those on the run because other countries had closed their borders, especially to Jewish immigration, except for a unique effort that was mounted by Britain. Kindertransport was an attempt to rescue unaccompanied Jewish children up to the age of 17 if they had a host family willing to accept them. The Refugee Children’s Movement in Britain reached into Germany and Austria and according to The Times, some 10,000 children were saved before the war began. There was no equivalent effort made in Czechoslovakia, despite the clear danger evidenced by such horrors as Kristallnacht — the “Night of Broken Glass” —

that had shortly before Winton’s trip struck Jewish shops, homes and synagogues in Germany and Austria, As Winton said in a Times interview in 2001, “One saw the problem there, that a lot of these children were in danger, and you had to get them to what was called a safe haven, and there was no organization to do that.” That is what Winton did: He created an operation that worked with furious speed, racing against the murderous rampage of the Nazi war machine. The modest stockbroker, albeit from a blueblooded background, cleverly used every means at his disposal, including “dangers, bribes, forgery, secret contacts with the Gestapo, nine railroad trains, an avalanche of paperwork and a lot of money,” as described in the obit. The volunteers called themselves the British Committee for Refugees from Czechoslovakia, Children’s Section and received aid from the Refugee Children’s Movement. They made appeals in newspaper ads, also church and synagogue bulletins, for host families and money in Britain, and in

As word spread and desperate parents brought their children to a rented storefront office, the long lines attracted Gestapo attention. “Perilous confrontations were resolved with bribes,” according to The Times. When the money ran out, Winton used his own. Can you imagine the searing pain involved with giving up your children to strangers? “Winton’s Children” numbered 669 lives saved. Sir Nicholas Winton was a most reluctant hero. Grete Gjelstrup, a Dane he married in 1948, tell anyone. She gave the scrapbook to a Holocaust historian, and then newspaper articles, books, television programs and movies ensued. He was showered with honors, knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2003, astonished all the while at the fuss being made. Sir Nicholas Winton was the son of a merchant banker of German-Jewish origin who had converted to Christianity. He had grown up in a safe and comfortable world of privilege, yet readily risked it all to help others in dire peril. He would serve as a Royal Air Force officer in the war, and later worked for refugee organizations and a charity that assisted the elderly. For all his exceptional efforts, he was richly rewarded with a long life. He died last week at the age of 106.
