He’s gentle and kind and loving, Valerie Sanks, of Rocky Point, explains. He’s got a Frank Sinatra debonair-style class, he’s well mannered, good in the car and loves people, especially children. His name is Bravo and, sorry, ladies, he’s not human. But, he’s still a great catch — or should we say fetch — with the capacity to love unconditionally. He also isn’t taken, and he could be yours. Brookhaven Town will be waiving its animal shelter fees on Saturday, Aug. 15, in honor of a Clear the Shelter event that seeks to encourage adoptions of the shelter’s many dogs and cats. Sanks, a Brookhaven animal shelter volunteer and dog owner, said dogs like Bravo who have lived in the shelter for extended periods of time often have trouble getting adopted because of factors beyond their

control, like age, injury and appearance. Bravo, a terrier mix, is estimated to be between 7 and 9 years old and has cropped ears. He was originally adopted from the shelter in 2011, but when his owners fell on hard times in 2014, he was brought back and is now in need of a new home. “He has every odd against him for getting a home,” Sanks said, but despite this, “he’s very sweet and very mellow.” Sanks also volunteers at the Riverhead and Southold towns’ animal shelters and described herself as “a firm believer in town shelters.” She referred to the staff at the Brookhaven shelter as “an incredible group of workers.” “When a dog needs something, people use their own money to buy it for them,” she said. “Town workers, on their day off, come down to the shelter ADOPTION continued on page A10

John T. Mather Memorial Hospital is calling on the community to donate blood at its annual summer blood drive on Aug. 14. Blood donations are critical in the summer, the Port Jefferson hospital said, because demand grows with increased motor vehicle crashes and donations usually drop as people go on vacation. High schools and colleges that typically host blood drives, accounting for a quarter of donations, are also out of session. Mather’s blood drive will be held in the Bloodmobile on the east side of the hospital, near the thrift shop, between 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. No appointment is necessary. All contributors will receive gift cards and treat bags to thank them for their donations.

Village makes concrete plans for streets and sidewalk Path takes Highlands road

Port’s upcoming paving project is presidential

By Elana Glowatz

By Elana Glowatz

A contractor is hitting the pavement to smooth out some Port Jefferson roads. The village board of trustees last week approved paving projects on the presidential streets, off of Old Post Road, and at the Riviera condos in the Harbor Hills section, between Port Jefferson and Mount Sinai harbors. In total, the projects will cost just shy of $360,000, with about two-thirds of that figure financing the roads named after former U.S. presidents — Jefferson, Washington, Lincoln and Roosevelt avenues and Wilson Drive — as well as the adjacent Rustic Road. The other third will cover Lookout Ridge Drive, Sawtooth Cove, Rockledge Path and Laurel Crescent. Medford-based Suffolk Asphalt Corp. will handle both those neighborhood projects. More than half of the cost to Suffolk Asphalt will come out of surplus money left over from the 201415 village budget, village officials said. Of all the roads in the village that needed work, Mayor Margot Garant said

during the Aug. 3 board meeting, “The presidential section was in the most need of repair, so they were approved first,” followed by the Riviera section. As for smaller side streets that need to be repaved, officials said the village’s

Department of Public Works will handle them in-house, rather than hiring a contractor. Trustee Larry LaPointe gave the examples of Grant and Bleeker streets, off East Broadway, which he said are in bad shape.

Port Jefferson’s village board of trustees approved a contractor last week to install about 0.2 miles of sidewalk along Highlands Boulevard, between the entrance to the Highlands condominiums and Oakland Avenue. The sidewalk has been planned for a while. During a resident push for the village-owned grassy area on Highlands Boulevard, along which the sidewalk would run, to be declared as open space or parkland, the village also tossed around the idea of putting in a walkway there. “They don’t even have a sidewalk,” Mayor Margot Garant said about the condos residents at a previous board meeting. “They have to walk in the road to get from the Highlands … to the upper Port area.” Nesconset-based Jadeco Construction Corp. will put in the sidewalk at a cost of $65,100 and the village will pay Welsbach Electric Corp., of Flushing, $17,000 to install lighting along the route. Although sidewalk plans are coming together now, the village approved the parkland designation for the 6-acre parcel in March, limiting its future use or development. Officials have discussed keeping the park passive, but possibly putting in benches and walking paths.

Brookhaven adopts new solar energy code Supreme Court judge throws out energy project lawsuit By Erika karp

S

Brookhaven Town reached the trifecta of adopting renewable energy codes when it embraced Suffolk County’s model solar code last week. After previously adopting the county’s geothermal and wind energy codes, the Brookhaven Town Board approved the one for solar, which will permit solar energy production facilities by planning board special permit in the town’s industrial zones. According to Suffolk County Planning Commission Chairman Dave Calone, the town is the first in the county to adopt all three model codes. “Brookhaven is the place where renewable energy is moving forward,” Calone said prior to a public hearing on the matter on Aug. 6. Deputy Town Attorney Beth Reilly said the code applies to the town’s industrial districts, L Industrial 1, light industry; L Industrial 2, heavy industry; and L Industrial 4. Permitted uses in light industry include banks, agricultural or nursery uses, places of worship, day cares, health clubs, manufacturing within a building, offices and warehouse spaces, while uses in heavy industry include manufacturing of asphalt, cement fertil-

izers, and chemicals; junkyards; farmers markets and stockyards. L4 districts deal solely with the generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy. “The intent of this section [is] to provide adequate safeguards for the location, siting and operation of solar production facilities,” the code states. The day before the Town Board’s adoption, a state Supreme Court judge dismissed a lawsuit against the town, its planning board and zoning board of appeals that sought to overturn the town’s approvals for a solar-energy production facility in Shoreham. Eight Shoreham residents listed under the community group Shoreham Wading River Advocates for Justice filed the lawsuit in November against the town entities, along with sPower, a renewable energy company based in Utah and California, and utilities PSEG Long Island and the Long Island Power Authority. sPower has an agreement to sell power generated at a future 50,000-solar panel facility, located on the DeLalio Sod Farm, to PSEG. Many residents who live near the farm have advocated against it, saying the project is too large for a residential area. Calone said he believes the new solar code, which outlines where the solar arrays

should be located, will lead to new projects being welcomed to communities. The total coverage of solar panels cannot exceed 60 percent of the lot area and freestanding panels cannot reach more than 20 feet above the ground, according to the code, which also adds buffer and setback restrictions. In addition, the code outlines design standards for the solar panels. Supervisor Ed Romaine (R) thanked

Calone and Councilmembers Valerie Cartright (D-Port Jefferson Station), Jane Bonner (C-Rocky Point) and Connie Kepert (D-Middle Island), who worked with the county on the code. “The one thing that is so beneficial is getting uniform code that can apply to all 10 towns so there is no guessing,” Romaine said. “It isn’t different from one town to another. It makes it simple for alternative energy to move forward.”

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT AT THIS PUBLIC HEARING

The approval of the Central Pine Barrens Commission is a key and the final authority on whether the Kent Animal Shelter may rebuild its aging facility on the site where it has been located since it was established in 1968. Unless we are permitted to rebuild, the shelter and the pets we serve face an uncertain future! The planned project would have many important environmental benefits to the Peconic River, Pine

Barrens Corridor, and groundwater from the removal of three antiquated buildings, the new sanitary and storm water drainage systems and the native plant re-vegetation efforts. An environmentally friendly, community oriented, energy efficient, aesthetically pleasing facility will help countless homeless animals for generations to come. Please show your support by attending this important public hearing.

Mount Elementary School in Stony Brook. The Comsewogue school district has undergone several administrative changes this year, with the two part-time deans at the middle and high schools being replaced with full-time assistant principals, and DiPrimo’s arrival completes the shift in staff.

Board members had already chosen social studies teacher and former dean James Hilbert to become the new assistant principal at John F. Kennedy Middle School, joining the other assistant principal there, Theresa Etts. At the high school, DiPrimo will work alongside fellow assistant principal Jinu Mathews — the pair of them replacing longtime dean Bill Bodkin, who has retired, and Robert Pearl, an assistant principal and special education teacher who recently left to become principal at Norwood Elementary School.

Premises known as 11 Stuyvesant Avenue, Mastic, N.Y. 11950. HELP FOR HOMEOWNERS IN FORECLOSURE New York State Law requires that we send you this notice about the foreclosure process. Please read it carefully. SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT You are in danger of losing your home. If you fail to respond to the summons and complaint in this foreclosure action, you lose your home. Please read the summons and complaint carefully. You should immediately contact an attorney or your local legal aid office to obtain advice on how to protect yourself. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid office, there are government agencies and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by the New York State Banking Department of Financial Services at 1-800-3423736 or visit the Department’s website at www.dfs.ny.gov. FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. 91_073015_vth_ptr_4x

Senior receives Rotary scholarship On July 28, the Port Jefferson Rotary Club met and honored Mount Sinai High School’s graduating senior Amy Cousins, the recipient of its 2015 Rotary $1,000 Scholarship. Rotarian Sharon Brennan presented Cousins to the club members by reading the presentation speech she made on June 8 at Mount Sinai’s Senior Awards Night. Before naming the awardee, Brennan pointed out to the audience that this year’s Rotary scholarship choice was made based on the fact that the student had especially excelled in these areas of her life: academics, volunteer services and the world of work. What’s more, the student best exemplified Rotary International’s motto, “Service Above Self.” An honor roll student, the award winner was on the Principal’s List and was graduating with an Advanced Regents Diploma. She had volunteered at

Save-A-Pet for three years and, at the same time, held down a full-time job in order to put away money for college. Her teachers recommended Cousins for the award because she was especially responsible, had strong character and good values, always presented a friendly smile and was a straightforward individual. The accomplished young lady will attend Adelphi University in Garden City, where she plans to major in clinical psychology with the goal of earning a doctorate. Cousins’ reason for this educational choice: to make a difference in other people’s lives. Cousins has already worked out a schedule at the school whereby she will be able to commute to attend classes three days a week and continue to hold a full-time job. The Rotarians congratulated Cousins and were pleased with their choice of scholarship recipient.

Richard was a senior subcontracts administrator for Exelis–Harris. He enjoyed golfing and basketball. Richard was a spiritual person. He was outgoing, a real people person and loved having family and friends around him. Arrangements were entrusted to the Bryant Funeral Home of Setauket. Services were held at St. James R.C. Church on July 15. Interment followed in the St. James Churchyard Cemetery. Contributions in his memory would be appreciated and may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice, 200 Belle Terre Road, Port Jefferson, NY 11777. An online guest book is available at www.bryantfh.com.

Wanda R. Kunz Wanda R. Kunz, of Port Jefferson, passed away on July 8. She is survived by her husband, Jerry; her daughter, Carolyn (Kevin); her sons, Eric and Evan; one sister; and many other family members and friends. Wanda received her horticulture degree from the now Farmingdale State College. Her early years were spent in New York City and Port Jefferson as a floral designer. She married Jerry Kunz and moved to Port Jefferson to begin the Kunz Greenhouse. In between being a mother and businesswoman, she was a Scout leader, taking Brownies and Girl Scouts to the highest level of Scouting, First Class Scout. Wanda was a board member and active volunteer of The Wayne Helmer Memorial Herb Garden. She was an avid reader, had an appreciation for antiques, collected china and tea strainers, enjoyed sketching and loved spending time with family. Arrangements were entrusted to the Bryant Funeral Home of Setauket.

Keri Dunne named Mather’s director of volunteer services Keri Dunne has been named director of volunteer services at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital. In her new role, Dunne oversees the adult and junior volunteers who work throughout the hospital and supports the operations of the Gift Shop and the Auxiliary’s Thrift Shop. just to walk the dogs.” While the town and volunteers are trying to get more people to adopt the animals, Sanks said additional volunteers are always needed. “Volunteering is needed immensely,” she said. “Especially when you have a shelter that could hold 80-plus dogs.” Volunteers spend outdoor time with the dogs, take them on walks and give them treats, but helping out is not limited to direct interaction with the animals. Sanks noted that even things as simple as dropping off a jar of peanut butter, a toy or a warm blanket or towel can do a great deal to ensure that these animals remain happy and healthy. “The most exciting day is when we have a volunteer meeting,” she said. “After the meeting is over, everybody goes to get their dogs and I stand in the parking lot and watch all the volunteers come out. It is the most beautiful thing anyone could ever see.”

Diapers are disposable, so are razor blades...but dogs? Lucy was adopted 11 years ago from a hurricane in the Bahamas. Daisy was added to the family 6 years later and the two became the best of friends, even sleeping together in the same crate. Then their family decided to move...and to leave them behind. Disposable. They need a new home and we’d love to keep them together, to lessen their heartbreak a little.

A rain garden in Rocky Point is a pretty way to collect stormwater runoff.

EDITORIAL

Send stormwater runoff to watery grave

Just about every time there’s any significant rainfall on the North Shore, our newsroom gets an advisory against swimming in our local waters — mostly embayments off the Long Island Sound. As it issues the advisories, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services always explains that stormwater runoff increases bacteria levels in waterways, and because these little nooks and crannies of water along the North Shore do not flush out as quickly as other places, it can be unhealthy to go for a dip. Stormwater runoff is an environmental issue we talk about a lot, but it seems we are not actually addressing the problem. There’s so much pavement in our residential and commercial developments that rainwater has nowhere to go but toward the sea, and it carries with it all the dirt, chemicals and trash it passes along the way. The ideal solution is increasing the amount of permeable surface in our neighborhoods so the runoff goes into the ground instead, where it is naturally filtered. We can do that by taking note of the locations we see to be in the most need of improvement and calling on our elected officials to install more catch basins, which absorb and help filter the runoff. We can also lobby for our municipalities — and even our businesses as well — to use permeable surfaces in parking lots or driveways. These absorbent pavements are not just fantasy; they exist and, though they are more expensive than asphalt, would save us a ton of money on stormwater and environmental maintenance costs in the future. And most importantly, no matter the cost, they would help protect the only home planet we have. On a personal level, we can help our local bodies of water by planting rain gardens on our properties, as they help absorb stormwater runoff, and by refusing to use harmful chemicals to treat our lawns. Everyone can do something to ease the burden of bacteria on our waterways. Protecting the environment is a group effort, so we all need to step up to the plate.

TO THE EDITOR: As a kid growing up in Northport, I often visited the Civil War Memorial on Main Street. The words on that monument are as true today as they were when they were carved many years ago: “The wounds of the Civil War are deeply cut.” I kept thinking about this monument as Governor Nikki Haley called for the removal of the Confederate flag from the South Carolina Statehouse. After attending the funerals of the Charleston massacre victims, she said there was a place for the flag, a place that preserves history, not a place where people gather to plan the state’s future. There is a powerful

message here regarding dialogue with people we disagree with. She realized people driving by the statehouse felt hurt and pain. She recounted an experience from her youth when her Indian father purchased fruit at a produce market in Columbia. Two policemen were called to keep an eye on him. As her father went to the register, he shook hands with the vendor and said thank you. Although nothing was said, she knew what had just happened. The produce stand is still there, and every time she drives by it, she feels the same pain. People driving by the State Capitol in Columbia will no longer feel the pain caused by the Confederate flag. Dan Kerr Stony Brook

Play it safe and wear a helmet

File photo

Letters …

TO THE EDITOR: The helmet laws for bicycle, skateboards, Rollerblades, etc. should be expanded. I really believe that anybody who rides on anything with two wheels should be mandated by their insurance company, the state and any other powers that be to wear a helmet. I’d like to see a helmet company that makes a helmet with Spock ears and a propeller, but I am just happy when I see helmets being used. I pulled a guy over on Cedar Street in Stony Brook when the baby that he had on the back of his bicycle had a helmet and he didn’t, and I reminded him that the success rate with brain injuries is very poor. I looked like a nut job, but I can’t stress enough that helmet laws are not strict enough — they’re now for kids under 14 but they should be for everybody. Thank you. Catherine M. Serdock Rocky Point

Cavalier charge in Cleveland

D. None of the above by DaNiel DuNaief

vtimes@tbrnewspapers.com

A

friend of mine recently shopped for a dishwasher with son, age 8. He checked out all the specifications from one to the next, examining the price, checking out the Energy Star rating and comparing the colors to the other appliances in his kitchen. The salesman gave the father and son team an overview of all the features. When my friend

asked about the energy efficiency, the salesman suggested he could get one with a particular rating, but it was not that big of a deal. My friend’s son insisted, “Hey, it protects the environment. You need to tell people that when they’re buying it.” My friend does energy research, where he tries to find the most efficient way to produce energy, although not for dishwashers necessarily. He spends his days designing, developing and refining plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while keeping down the cost of supplying the energy. When he told me this story, he said he realized that his son, who didn’t always seem to pay attention to what his father said, was listening. When our kids were young, my wife and I used to say, “The recorder is on.” That was a reminder that we might be venturing into conversational areas that weren’t appropriate for our children or that we might want to

avoid saltier language. Did treading lightly around difficult subjects and avoiding curses help our children at all? Well, we’d like to think so, at least back then. Still, the way we speak to, about or in front of our children matters. That brings me to the recent Republican presidential debate at the home of the Cleveland Cavaliers, and near the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. There was a candidate, Donald Trump, who made some pejorative comments about a moderator for the debate, Megyn Kelly of Fox News. He continued to go on the attack, even suggesting that Kelly should apologize to him for her tough questions. Even in the moment, when challenged by a woman about his perspective on women, he insisted, with some effective humor, that he didn’t have time for political correctness and that he wasn’t referring to all women, only one, with whom he has an ongoing public feud. But wait, a politician, who

wants to be the leader of our country and of the free world, doesn’t have time for political correctness? Yeah, I get it, he’s barnstorming around the country, full of bluster and self-importance, blending entertainment and outrage in one big, hairy ball. What happened to the notion of nuanced negotiations? Shouldn’t our leaders demonstrate the kind of statesmanship that enables them to discuss important matters with the leaders of other nations, without running the risk of alienating them and damaging our negotiating position?
