The Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s Educational & Cultural Heritage Center in Stony Brook will be hosting two upcoming events as the organization continues to honor the life and inventions of Nikola Tesla, following the exhibit entitled “Tesla — Past, Present, Future.” The Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe, which sponsored the exhibit is expanding its reach and trying to get others interested in its new museum in Shoreham, which is in the works. The two upcoming events will showcase two of the exhibit’s most compelling features. First, the film “Tower to the People” will be presented Aug. 19 from 8 to 11 p.m. This awardwinning film about Tesla’s famous wireless transmitting tower will include a Q&A with filmmaker Joe Sikorski, as well as a premier of his upcoming movie “The Invisible Threads,” based on Tesla’s lesser known work in wireless technology. Tickets can be purchased for $10 at www.eventbrite.com under “Tower to the People” or for $15 at the door. The center is located at 97 Main Street, Stony Brook. On Aug. 27 at 2 p.m., the exhibit will feature a presentation by Sebastian White, a physicist and great-grandson of Stanford White, the renowned architect who designed and built Wardenclyffe, Tesla’s last existing laboratory and current headquarters of the Tesla Science Center. White will speak about Tesla and his connections with Long Island cultural figures and the international science community. There is no cost to attend.

Bernard James Kito Jr., 68, of Port Jefferson, loving husband of Janice, died Monday, Aug. 7. He was born in Port Jefferson June 2, 1949, the son of the late Bernard James Kito and Anne Kito of Port Jefferson Station. A graduate of Southampton College, he majored in marine biology. He taught science and math at Eastport High School and was an associate principal in the William Floyd School District. He cared deeply about his students, maintained contact with many throughout the years and even provided some with employment later in life. Carrying on the family legacy was of utmost importance to him. As a young boy, he helped grow rhododendrons on

the family farm; and while working in the school system, he later established a successful landscape design company, Kito Nursery. He was an entrepreneur at heart and full of ideas. He was creative, energetic and always searching for new challenges and opportunities in business and everyday life. He was an incredibly generous and compassionate person who was happiest when doing for others, as exemplified by his involvement with the Lion’s Club, his work as a patient’s advocate at Stony Brook University Hospital and the sharing of his Thanksgiving table with whomever wished to come, including the homeless on more than one occasion. He made a “new best friend” everywhere he went, from 7-Eleven to the Ritz Carlton. He was full of personality and drew everyone in. In addition to his wife, Jan, he is survived by his son, B.J. of New Haven, Connecticut, and his brother Jeffrey Kito of Port Jefferson Station.

PJV acquires land in deal that may speed up Billie’s reopening

‘I’m looking to get Billie’s up and running for my concerned friends and villagers who have been asking.’ — Joey Zangrillo

A June 2016 fire has left Billie’s 1890 Saloon closed ever since, but the wheels are in motion to get the establishment reopened.

153929

A decades-old Port Jefferson institution that has remained closed since a June 2016 fire could be moving toward reopening, thanks in large part to an agreement between Port Jefferson Village and the building owner. Billie’s 1890 Saloon had to close its Main Street doors June 27 last year after a fire in the kitchen caused severe damage, and exposed several building code violations that required remedy before the business could be reopened. During an Aug. 7 village board meeting, Mayor Margot Garant and the board of trustees approved a resolution that should expedite the process. Among the code violations — of which there were about 20 — from the village’s building department was a requirement for the installation of a bathroom that meets requirements laid out by the Americans with Disabilities Act. An ADA compliant bathroom would not fit on the main level of the building, which houses the bar, according to Garant, so instead, the building owner planned to move the kitchen to the basement and turn the former kitchen on the main floor into the new restrooms. Because of the change of use of the building, an aspect of the village code was triggered requiring additional parking spaces be added. Being that no space was available on the property for the additional parking, the building owner could instead submit a payment in lieu of parking to the village, which is allowed under the code. Instead of squaring the requirement with actual dollars, the village and building owner Joey Zangrillo entered into an agreement for Zangrillo to deed over land in the rear of the property, which is currently used for parking, over to the village. As a result, Zangrillo will essentially own the property that houses the building, and the remainder of the parcel will be deeded to the village. “In talking with parking committee and Larry [LaPointe, deputy mayor], we find the land to be extremely valuable,” Garant said during the meeting. “You can’t really put a price point or tag on the size of the lot.” The deal would be subject to approval by Suffolk County prior to finalization to ensure moving the kitchen to the basement is adherent to county regulations. As a result of the deal, Billie Phillips — the original business owner for more than 35 years who was not at the helm at the time of the fire but has since entered a lease agreement with Zangrillo to reopen Billie’s 1890 Saloon — said he is hoping to be ready to reopen in early 2018. “This is a more than fair bargain from the village’s point of view,” said LaPointe, who is also a trustee, during the meeting. According to Garant, the area being acquired by the village is used as an informal parking area, though it will now have actual spaces painted and associated with municipal meters. Brian Egan, the village attorney, explained that the difference in owning municipal parking spaces and leasing them to property owners from the village’s perspective is that it prevents disputes, confusion and potential lawsuits when property changes hands. “Unlike every other municipality you would assume owns the municipal parking fields, we are a patchwork in that back parking lot,” he said. Zangrillo praised Garant and the village for their hard work in helping to facilitate the deal and get the establishment back on track for reopening. “The village has been nothing but extremely helpful to me as a landlord,” he said in a phone interview. “I’m looking forward to many, many years of a great relationship with my tenant. I’m looking to get Billie’s up and running for my concerned friends and villagers who have been asking.”

village Port Jeff resident, business owner travels to Kenya to help needy children By Alex Petroski alex@tbrnewspapers.com Main Street in Port Jefferson and Nairobi County in Kenya are separated by 7,300 miles, but a chance meeting between a local business owner and a Kenyan lawyer has made a world of difference for needy children in the impoverished nation. In 2016, Annette Kawira, 28, moved with her then-fiancé from Kenya to Port Jeff. One night she and her now-husband, who relocated to begin working at Stony Brook University, found themselves in Port Jeff looking for a place to eat and ended up dining at the Greek restaurant Z Pita. Owner Joey Zangrillo struck up a conversation with Kawira, who had been a practicing lawyer in Kenya. She told him about her home and about a charitable effort in which she had previously been involved. Kawira said she used to donate 10 percent of her monthly salary to a cause being undertaken by a pastor in a suburb of Nairobi, whose mission was to help orphaned and forgotten children living on the streets without proper care. According to Kawira, Pastor Hika Kamau and his wife Judy realized after several church services that when tea and bread were shared with members of the congregation, several children would appear to eat and then disappear. Kawira said Kamau was curious about what was going on with the approximately dozen children. So after one service he told the children he would gladly feed them lunch; but in exchange he asked them to introduce him to their parents. It then occurred to him many were orphans, and others had families that were either unable or unwilling to care for their children. “He just wondered, ‘Where do these kids go during the week?’” Kawira said. This sparked Kamau’s motivation. In 2009, the pastor set up what would eventually evolve into the Bethsaida Orphanage, headed by the Bethsaida Community Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to helping needy children in the area, with the help of the Bethsaida Women’s Empowerment Group. The school, which is also home for many of the children, originated as a small dwelling built out of mud and soil on the grounds of the church for the original group of children the pastor met after services. Through word of mouth, the number of children served by the school has ballooned to more than 100, with 72 kids from 1 year old to 17 years old living permanently on the site, which has grown through the exchange of the pastor’s ancestrally inherited land. Kawira said she was happy to donate part of her salary to help the cause. “Every time I would give it to them, I realized what I was giving really wasn’t making a difference, because they would probably just eat, buy a few utilities — that doesn’t change the situation that they were in,” she said while sitting at a table inside Z Pita. “My interest with the kids was to just make sure whatever we do, it’s sustainable. I don’t think you can beg forever … what can we do that will empower these kids to empower themselves?” When Kawira found herself at Zangrillo’s restaurant last year, they struck up a conversation, and the restaurant owner told her about his own charitable effort on which he had just embarked. Zangrillo founded a company

Purchasers of the apparel, upon check out, are instructed to select a charity of their choice toward which to direct 10 percent of their purchase. Zangrillo and Kawira soon realized their missions intersected and decided to team up. Kawira explained the story behind the pastor’s mission in Kenya, and by July of this year, after a fundraiser at Z Pita, the Port Jeff business owner was on a 25-hour excursion to see the desperate area for himself. “I’m telling you — what good food can do,” Kawira said, laughing about the lucky circumstances that led to the charitable partnership. “Good food brings people together.” After the first fundraiser and additional money accumulated by a donation container that sits on the front counter at the restaurant year-round, enough money has been raised to begin the construction of a well at

the orphanage, which will provide muchneeded clean water. “I’m never going to forget them — I’m going to make this a lifelong mission, as long as I’m alive,” Zangrillo said, reflecting on his eight-day trip to East Africa. Zangrillo and Kawira have enlisted the help of Maureen Nabwire, a native of Kenya, who serves as a project manager for their efforts and has plans to venture to Port Jeff to establish a game plan for 2018. Plans include figuring out how much money needs to be raised and how it will be done to make the facility everything it needs to be for as many needy Kenyan children as possible. “Annette and Joey are the kindest and most beautiful souls, and I am so glad I get to work on this initiative with them,” Nabwire said in an email. “They have marshaled the Port Jefferson community into this great cause, and I am super proud of them. They have brought the plight and needs of Beth-

saida community children home to a much greater audience and the response has been immensely positive. Annette and Joey represent the society we want to have where your neighbor’s trouble or suffering is your problem. From what they have done, the home down here in Kenya is going to take care of the children without trouble, and guarantee them basic needs and a good education.” Kawira tried to sum up what the extra attention being paid to a needy group in her home country has meant so far, and what it will mean in the future. “We’re dealing with kids who don’t have primary resources — water, clothing and shelter,” she said. “It would be hard to explain how dire the need is until you see it.” To learn more about the cause, visit www. facebook.com/racehasnoplace. Experts share tips to enjoy the solar eclipse File photo by Victoria Espinoza

BY JILL WEBB It won’t be an average Monday, Aug. 21, this year as the moon will completely block the sun for two-and-a-half minutes. The day marks the first total solar eclipse to happen in North America since 1979, and it’s the first one to stretch from coast to coast in 99 years. In a total solar eclipse the disk of the moon seems to entirely cover the disk of the sun. This will happen Monday on a path about 70 miles wide. Unfortunately, Long Island isn’t on the eclipse’s path of totality, but you still will be able to see a partial eclipse. New York will have about 71 percent of the sun covered during the eclipse. At 1:24 p.m. the eclipse begins on Long Island, and will last till 4:01 p.m. The peak eclipse time is 2:46 p.m. “I think it’s wonderful for families to experience this with their children,” NASA expert Laurie Cantillo said. “It could be an experience like this that will get a child to stop looking at a phone or tablet and look up to the sky and perhaps motivate them to want to learn more.” Fredrick Walters, an astronomy professor at Stony Brook University, has put together a list of ways to maximize your viewing experience of the eclipse. Walters said to focus on looking at the stars emerging during the daytime, the shadow bands that will appear across the land and the changing colors as the light fades. Most importantly, you need to have the proper viewing tool: eclipse glasses. Regular sunglasses won’t cut it, and it’s very dangerous to directly expose your eyes to the sun. “We’ve all been taught ever since we were kids don’t ever look directly at the sun and that advice applies,” Cantillo said. “The only time it’s safe to remove eclipse glasses is if you’re in the path of totality, during those couple minutes of totality.” Unprotected viewing may not cause immediate pain, but Walters said he has heard of cases of people waking up the next morning with blurry vision or blindness. Some people can recover in months to years, but it’s not worth the risk. The professor said that these special glasses are basically pieces of Mylar foil shielding your eyes. The glasses should be from proper sources that are certified by testing organizations. “If you have a pair of eclipse glasses and want to test them, put them on and look — not at the sun — but just look at bright lights and things.” Walters said. “If you can see anything, throw them away. You shouldn’t be able to see [anything] except the sun.” If you can’t get a pair of eclipse glasses in time, you can DIY them by putting a small round hole in an index card and project the image of the sun onto a flat surface. “One thing you will notice if you don’t look at the sun through your glasses is if you look at the shadows on the ground, you’ll see the shadows are crescentshaped,” Walters said. Leaves in the trees could act as projection tools too, casting multiple tiny crescent-shaped shadows on the ground. During the partial phase, according to

Incidents and arrests Aug. 8–14

Walters, you won’t notice anything besides the sun getting dimmer. “Unless, you look at the sun through your eclipse glasses, and you can see the sun is no longer circular — there’s a chunk taken out of it,” Walters said. “But, nothing much changes until you have the total phase of the eclipse because the sun just fades.” Viewers along the path of totality will have a different viewing experience than Long Islanders. “Inside the path of totality is completely different, it will be night for two and a half minutes.,” Walters said. “The sun gets completely blocked out, the corona of the sun is about as bright as the full moon, that will provide illumination.” Walters also pointed out that in the path of totality, regular colors might appear different. Where sunrises and sunsets usually appear to have reddish tints, during the eclipse the tone will have a blue tinge. Another thing to notice is temperature; during the peak eclipse things will get colder. Eclipses have provided researchers with data to uncover scientific discoveries. This time, the scientists are letting the public partake in their findings. “One of the things that is being planned for next Monday is the National Solar Observatory and the National Science Foundation have handed out a number of telescopes [and] cameras to people along the eclipse line,” Walters said. “The idea is to have them take pictures and movies and stitch it all together to a 90-minute-long movie of how the sun’s corona is changing. This has never been done.” If you miss this eclipse, don’t fret because another one is coming April 8, 2024, that will run from Texas through Maine — and upstate New York will be in the path of totality. “It’s almost a mystical experience — you really have to experience this,” Walters said. “It’s good scientifically, but it’s really a great thing to observe on a human level.” News 12 meteorologist Rich Hoffman said in an email that the weather forecast for Aug. 21 is good, even though things could change between press time and the eclipse. Hoffman said mostly sunny skies are expected for the day with temperature highs near 84.

Bank bilking

A 37-year-old woman from Mastic Beach reported to TD Bank, where she did her personal banking, Sept. 2, 2016, that someone without authorization had removed $2,500 from her bank account, according to police. She was later reimbursed by the bank, though it was later discovered the statement she made was false because she had provided her personal and banking information to someone who wrote checks to deposit the $2,500 fraudulently, police said. She was arrested Aug. 14 in Selden and charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, providing a false written statement and criminal facilitation.

Boat build and race zooms through Port Jeff Harbor By Kevin Redding kevin@tbrnewspapers.com The Long Island Seaport and Eco Center in Port Jefferson held its seventh annual “Quick ’n’ Dirty” boat build and race Aug. 12 and 13 at Harborfront Park. The competition allows teams of two to build a boat out of wood for five hours on Saturday. The team then has three hours on Sunday to paint their boat before the race around Port Jefferson Harbor. Port Jeff residents and annual competitors Ken Callirgos and Matthew Deveau came out on top in the field of eight boats, racing their UFO-themed vessel to victory. “This is our second win but we haven’t won in five years so it was nice to get back on top,” Callirgos said, laughing that as winners, they not only get trophies but bragging rights too. He and Deveau, both members of the Port Jefferson Moose Lodge 1379, crafted their boat into a black “Unidentified Floating Object” and painted a green Bullwinkle on its bow. Deveau said they weren’t too worried about the strict boat-building deadline. “We’ve been doing it for so long now, we tend to have a decent battle plan when

we go in,” he said. “This was actually probably one of our least stressful builds.” Before the race, last year’s winners John and Stephanie Marino of Mount Sinai readied their Willy Wonka-themed boat and blasted “Pure Imagination” through a speaker system. While John dressed as Wonka himself, top hat and all, Stephanie and their two sons were decked-out as Oompa Loompas. Although Marino said he hoped to get the “golden ticket” this year, he pointed out why the race is so important to him. “This is our anniversary weekend,” Marino said. “The first year was actually on the day so every year this event falls on our weekend and we just enjoy spending the time together, building and painting as a family.” As the competitors hopped into their vessels, paddling and swimming toward the finish line, spectators filled up the pier to cheer them on. “It’s just unbelievable,” Mayor Margot Garant said. “The race is just great and it really brings a different dimension to Harborfront Park, I love watching the competitiveness and creativity that goes into it. I also think it’s great to raise awareness about the Long Island Seaport and Eco Center and what they do.”

Rally opposing white supremacy springs up in Port Jeff Station BY ALEX PETROSKI ALEX@TBRNEWSPAPERS.COM The decision by lawmakers in Charlottesville, Virginia to remove a statue of Robert E. Lee, a general in the Confederate Army, from where it stands in the city, lit a fuse last week that burned all the way to the corner of Routes 112 and 347 in Port Jefferson Station and beyond this past weekend. The decision sparked protests featuring unabashed Nazi salutes and chants, white supremacist-rhetoric and violence in Virginia. The volatile event resulted in injuries and currently one reported fatality at the rally as tensions escalated. During the Aug. 12 protest, an Ohio man allegedly drove a car into a crowd of counter protesters opposing the hateful rhetoric of those aligned with the Nazi-sympathizers, killing 32-year-old Charlottesville resident Heather Heyer and injuring many others, according to Virginia police. Two Virginia state troopers — Lt. H. Jay Cullen and trooper-pilot Berke M.M. Bates — assisting in the response to the protest, also died in a helicopter accident leaving the scene, according to a state police spokesperson. Demonstrations were held across the country Aug. 13, including in Port Jeff Station and Huntington Station, to present a unified front against the groups propagat-

ing hate and violence towards non-white Americans and citizens. According to a spokesperson for the North Country Peace Group, a North Shore-based activist group responsible for organizing several rallies at that location and others nearby in recent months, about 125 people attended the Port Jeff Station rally. “We came together as a community to send a message of unity, solidarity and peace,” Myrna Gordon of the North Country Peace Group said in an email. “What happened in Charlottesville will not be tolerated. Charlottesville is just a small fraction of what is happening in our country.” Leaders from across the political landscape denounced the hate groups and violent actions. “These violent acts inspired by deep hatred are disgusting, un-American and unwelcome in our great nation,” U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) said in an email through a spokeswoman. “Differences will always exist and it is OK to disagree in America, but the violence taking place today in Charlottesville is absolutely not the right way to disagree with each other. We can and must do more to unite as a nation. There must be zero tolerance whatsoever for the extremes that try to tear us all apart. Patriotic Americans of all walks of life must come together and bridge those divides for the sake of our country and our people.”

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never Known To Fail) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of heaven, blessed mother of the Son of God, immaculate virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh star of the sea, help me & show me here in, you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity There are none who can withstand your power. Oh show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. (3 times). Oh Holy Mary, I place this cause in your hands. (3 times). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can obtain my goals. You gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me, and that in all instances of my life, you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. M.T. Safety questions and concerns

There’s no doubt that what happened at Sachem High School East Aug. 10 was a tragedy — no family should have to bury their child, no less a 16-year-old who was simply dropped off for summer football practice. In the wake of junior Joshua Mileto’s death following a football drill, there are some serious questions. How tough should sports training and conditioning be for high school athletes? Are kids being pushed too far? Are involuntary, offseason workouts supervised and held to the standards of an in-season, mandatory practice? Mileto was killed during training camp when a 10-foot, 400-pound log he and four teammates were carrying over their heads fell and struck him — a drill similar to one employed by Navy SEALS, but with a log half as heavy. Were the coaches properly trained in how to perform the drill? Should a defensive back and wide receiver — especially one who is 5 feet 6 inches tall, 134 pounds and just 16 years old — be taking part in this drill? Building camaraderie, coordination and strength are admirable goals in team sports, but having kids running beneath a log is a reckless way to try to achieve them. In this case, it was tragically reckless. The overwhelming number of injuries and deaths that occur during practices and, in some cases, games, are impossible to anticipate and fall largely under the assumed risks of playing any contact sport — but a death like Mileto’s is different. Risks were either ignored or missed, and clearly outweighed any potential reward. Section XI Executive Director Tom Combs said in a statement that “sometimes coaches are in attendance and sometimes trainers are there, but it can’t be mandatory,” referring to offseason practices, which are not subject to the same restrictions and stanPhoto from Facebook dards as in-season practices. “It’s up to the individual schools on Joshua Mileto how they handle offseason workouts,” he added. Although offseason camps are not mandatory, most 16- and 17-yearolds would likely assume it would be detrimental to their standing on a team to miss team activities, and they would probably be right. The editorial staff reached out to districts and football coaches across our coverage area to find out about policies employed by our districts, or possible changes programs might explore as a reaction to the accident. While we understand there are legality issues that may arise, we were disappointed to be turned away by coaches and press contacts in attempting to gain some insight to find out what some of our North Shore standards are. It is beholden upon coaches at all times, especially in the aftermath of an unimaginable tragedy, to reassure parents that their kids are safe when dropped off for practice — voluntary or otherwise. They were not interested in telling us but we hope they’d tell you, if asked. We believe, even with this being an offseason camp, there should be a swift rule response to protect young athletes. This unfortunate death has affected everyone, and the only way to learn from the incident is to talk about the problem, the dangers of football, and check our priorities. Safety should be the priority. We should be talking about how to prevent future tragedies.

Letters to the editor

Remembering a friend of 50 years She was a woman with many interests and a curiosity to learn new skills, whether they be carpentry, music, art, poetry, sewing, baking, computer technology or other fields. This is how her friends and family will remember Shirley Leonard, who passed away peacefully Aug. 1 following a challenging struggle with pneumonia. She was a longtime friend of the First United Methodist Church, where she offered her artistic talents and musical tributes to many events, including the annual Chicken Barbecue, which was recently dedicated to her memory. A Rhode Island native from Cranston, Shirley graduated from the local high school, served in the U. S. Army from 1950 to 1953 and received a teaching degree from the University of Rhode Island. She then moved to Long Island where she taught elementary school for 27 years in the Middle Country school district.

When she bought the circa 1851 Samuel Still home on High Street in Port Jefferson, Shirley took on the formidable task of historic restoration, learning as she progressed and working with local craftsmen including Bob Swenk and friend Robert Arnold. She married Bill Leonard in 1974 after “eyeing” him on South Street where the Leonard home stood and at Aunt Betty Colen’s home during family gatherings. Bill joined the preservation efforts with “Shirley the contractor,” as he affectionately called her, adding a collection of Jeeps and vintage outhouses to their limited property. Historic restoration and research were significant interests during Shirley’s retirement years. Both she and Bill became involved with the Port Jefferson Historical Society’s 1976 Bicentennial project of moving and restoring the former Dedio House to Prospect Street where it remains today as part of the

museum complex. As a former trustee of the church, Shirley offered her knowledge of property surveys and critical information that assisted in the plans for the current parking lot on the east side of the church. And what would the many fundraising events be like without her personal designs for tickets and posters? In fact, the aging greenand-white sign on the front lawn that has for years advertised the Chicken Barbecue was Shirley’s creation. The large gathering of friends and church members at Bryant Funeral Home Aug. 3 was a testament to her life as remembrances, memorable and amusing anecdotes were shared. Shirley A. Leonard will be greatly missed as she touched so many lives in the church, neighborhoods and Port Jefferson community.

Zeldin: This is a time to be an American Anyone associating themselves with the KKK and Nazism is associating themselves with hatred, bigotry, racism, intolerance and a tremendously inhumane past filled with horrible evil. This is one of the extremes that exist in our society that has a long history of trying to tear us apart. We are still learning the facts of what happened in Charlottesville, and there is evidence that the violence came from multiple groups and multiple sides, and really no one can be defended who traveled to this beautiful, historic city for the sole purpose

of causing physical harm to others. It’s indefensible. For that domestic terrorist who drove that car through that crowded street, his homicidal behavior must result in a prosecution to the fullest extent of the law. For the protesters with pure, good, genuine and peaceful purposes, I think it is very important you were brave enough to be there to lend your voice. For any of the protesters on either side with extremist views and violent purposes, you are 100 percent completely in the wrong. I have spent a great deal of

time in Charlottesville throughout my life, including an entire summer one year in the Army, and it really is one of the greatest cities we have in this country — so rich in history and culture, including our nation’s Founding Fathers. This isn’t a time to be left or right, liberal or conservative, Republican or Democrat. This is a time to be an American. Quite candidly, every day should be the perfect day to be an American first. United.

Lee Zeldin U.S. Representative 1st Legislative District

Good people getting recognized for good deeds I want to applaud TBR News Media for running uplifting articles. I enjoyed reading the editorial column on Aug. 10 in The Village Beacon Record titled

“Giving is great.” It is always heartwarming to know that there are good people of all ages performing good deeds, and that they do get their well-earned recognition

from time to time.

A clever new take on an old classic I just read Daniel Dunaief’s Aug. 10 “None of the Above” column titled “Who’s on first in

Thank you.

OPINION A plea for fact-based reporting from the left and right

J

ournalists need to embrace Detective Sgt. Joe Friday’s line from “Dragnet,” “Just the facts, ma’am.” Caught up in intense public passions, journalists can either throw their opinions at the inflamed cacophony or they can seize an opportunity to do something that has escaped most politicians: Represent broader interests. We live in a world of spin, where claims and counterclaims come out so By Daniel Dunaief rapidly that reality has become a blur. The challenges in sifting through fact and fiction have increased as officials of all stripes shout their truths from the rooftops, even if they have an obstructed view of the world down below. When I was in journalism school more than two decades ago, a good

D. None of the above

friend from Bulgaria, who was one of the few people who could pronounce my name correctly when she read it in my mailbox, shared her writing with me. I noticed a flaw in the way she recorded dialogue. The quotes in her story often lacked the syntax and vocabulary that native English speakers possess. When I asked if she only spoke with other Bulgarians, she playfully punched my shoulder and said she needed to hear better. That was an unintentional consequence of the way someone who spoke three languages translated the world. The chasm today between what people say and what others hear, even those who speak the same language, has gotten wider. Editors and reporters return to their desks or take out their laptops, ready to share quotes, events and facts. These fellow members of the media may find themselves seeing what they want to see, much like the parent of an athlete on a field or a coach who has become an advocate or cheerleader. In

editorials, where we’re clearly sharing an opinion, that works, but in news reports we should share the facts, offer context — and increase the value of fact-based reporting. With facts under regular assault, the search for them, and the ability to verify them, becomes even more important. A divided nation needs balanced, fair, accurate and defensible reporting. In their publications, scientists share materials and methods sections, which should allow other researchers to conduct the same experiments and, presumably, find the same results. Far too often, opinions disguised as news urge people to trust the writer. Why? Readers should be able to pull together the same raw materials and decide for themselves. I know government officials don’t always deal in facts. I also know numbers can be repackaged to suit an agenda, turning any conclusion into a specious mix of farce and mental acrobatics. To wit, he’s the best lefthanded hitter every Tuesday there’s a full moon below the Mason-Dixon

line. Just because it’s presented as a fact doesn’t mean we have to report it or even mock it. If it’s meaningless, then leave it alone. The argument that other journalists are doing it doesn’t make it acceptable. Several years ago, someone called to berate me for what he considered errors in my story. Rather than shout him down, I gave him the chance to offer his perspective. Eventually he calmed down and we had a measured, detailed discussion. This became the first of numerous conversations and interactions in which he provided important perspectives and shared details I might not otherwise have known. Reporters face a public acutely aware of its own anger. Almost by definition in a country where the two major political parties struggle to find common ground, some group of readers disagrees with our coverage. We shouldn’t try to please everyone. In fact, we should try to please no one — we should merely work harder. It’s time to allow facts to speak for themselves.

Nonprofit is making life easier for former boxers Ring 10 raises money to help abandoned fighters, those down on their luck BY KEVIN REDDING KEVIN@TBRNEWSPAPERS.COM It was one of the few times Howard Davis Jr.’s wife saw him cry in public. The Glen Cove native and Olympic gold medalist who made history in 1976 as the first amateur boxer to win the New York Golden Gloves tournament four years in a row had just about lost hope that he would ever get back his coveted awards, which were stolen from him and sold at a garage sale. That all changed Sept. 13, 2015, when he was honored by Matt Farrago and his New York-based nonprofit, Ring 10, during a gala at Marina del Rey Caterers in the Bronx. Davis, who was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer earlier that year at 59 and was on a personal mission to retrieve the mementos for his family before it was too late, was presented with four golden pendants. Each one was a perfect replica of his lost golden gloves pendants, made and paid for by Ring 10. Veteran fighters from the nonprofit took turns placing them around his neck. All Davis could do was bury his head in his hands. “It was such an emotional moment and it was all because of Matt Farrago and Ring 10,” his wife Karla Guadamuz-Davis said, adding that the organization regularly helped pay for her now-late husband’s expensive medical treatment. “After Howard passed away on

Clockwise from top, Ring 10 boxers smile during a fundraiser; Ring 10 founder Matt Farrago with board member Richard Schwartz; and Farrago with the late boxer and gold medalist Howard Davis Jr. said they anticipate some younger guys currently in the ring coming to them for help. “Boxers are basically pawns to be moved around,” said Richard Schwartz, one of the board of directors. “I also think there’s the feeling that a lot of people just don’t care — they don’t care about the modern-day gladiators who get in the ring to entertain them, who risk their lives. Once they hang up their gloves and a lot of the hits to the head kick in, many of them don’t even have any kind of medical insurance when they need it most. Where is Don King? Where is Oscar De La Hoyas? These people have made hundreds of millions of dollars from the sweat, blood and tears of these fighters, and where are they?” To Burton, a boxer who has been swindled out of a fair share of money over the years, there’s hope as long as Farrago is around. “Everything he says he does, he actually does,” Burton said. “He goes beyond what’s expected of him and he’ll help anybody. If you’re down on your luck, Matt will find a way to raise money for you. Ring 10 is helping as many fighters as we can.” The Ring 10 7th Annual Fundraiser will be held at the Marina del Rey Caterers in the Bronx Sept. 24 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
