“It has been awesome to have so much new information to share with people, specifically about [Phillips, Nathaniel and John] Roe and their involvement in the Culper Spy Ring,” he said. “A lot of Port Jeff residents don’t know that Drowned Meadow had such an important role during the Revolution, so the response has been great — and we have had so many people.”

Communities throughout the area honored the Revolutionary War during a series of interactive exhibits and historical reenactments on Culper Spy Day, Saturday, Sept. 10.

Mari Irizarry, TVHS director, said she estimated around 1,300 people visited the historical society grounds on Sept. 10.

“It wasn’t just talking about the spies and the war, but it was really just talking about life during the 18th century, which is the bigger picture also, which was nice to see,” Irizarry said.

Outside the museum, a band of costumed patriot privateers educated the public about the plundering at this site nearly twoand-a-half centuries ago. Following the presentation, visitors moved inside the house, where they encountered a series of historical documents and artifacts connected to the spy Accompanyingring. these materials were artistic renderings depicting scenes from the spy ring. Exhibitors used software from Midjourney, an independent research lab focusing on design, human infrastructure and artificial intelligence. Such AI-generated illustrations included scenes of patriot troops hiding inside a basement and a group of

Tyler said he also saw children fascinated by demonstrations that included writing a mailing letter in colonial times and hearing stories about youngsters during the era as well as recent local history.

Mark Sternberg, the spy ring historian at Drowned Meadow Cottage, led the tours throughout the day and was elated by the public’s degree of interest.

Sternberg said he first kindled an interest in local history while growing up in Port Jefferson. According to him, the village is seeing a surge of interest in the American Revolution due to discoveries connecting Drowned Meadow to the spy ring.

Village Historical Society and Tri-Spy Tours in collaboration with more than 30 local historical and cultural organizations, returned in full force for its eighth annual event. Due to COVID-19, organizers hosted a downsized version last year and a virtual presentation in 2020.

Margo Arceri, of Tri-Spy Tours, said Irizarry was a huge help spearheading the planning of many of the activities. Arceri said she was grateful for all the volunteers, sponsor Heritage Spy Ring Golf Club and participating organizations, who were not just locally based but from all over Long Island, who made it a success.

“People didn’t know that we have so much Revolutionary War history,” he said, adding, “It’s awesome to ... get people engaged in the Revolutionary War history of Port Jeff, and there’s still so much to tell.”

“We’re all telling our part of the Revolutionary story,” she said.

Arceri added she was impressed by the people from all different age groups she met at the event and showed interest in the Culper“Thisspies.isnot just one age group that enjoys and is attracted to this story,” she said. “It’s really for all ages.”

“They were absorbing everything, asking questions and even proudly telling us their connections with ancestors in the Revolutionary War or things they have from the colonial period,” he said.

Irizarry said she enjoyed all the organizations taking part in the day to tell their Revolutionary War stories. She added organizations such as Four Harbors Audubon Society discussed making ink from natural products, and Sweetbriar Nature Center representatives talked about birds of prey that existed during the 18th century.

In Port Jeff village, local historians greeted visitors with a tour of the Drowned Meadow Cottage Museum, a structure that dates back to the 18th century.

“With the virus changing, it’s even more important to keep yourself and your family safe from getting COVID again and remain vigilant about taking precautions, i.e. hand washing, social distancing, mask wearing,” Nachman added.

A few days later, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention approved the administration of the booster.

Area doctors welcomed the news and suggested the newest booster would be helpful for certain groups.

Dr. Adrian Popp, chair of Infection Control at Huntington Hospital/ Northwell Health, agreed that senior citizens and immunocompromised people should consider the latest booster.

The incidence of hospitalizations among people who have COVID at area hospitals has remained fairly stable during the summer. “Mental health issues were mostly related to the isolation mandates that were required to slow the spread of COVID,” Popp explained. “The reduction in restrictions has improved the mental health issues for many people.”

“We are aggressively evaluating all suspected cases of monkeypox and have protocols in place for testing as well as treatment,” Nachman wrote. “We will be rolling out a [National institutes of Health] funded clinical trial for treating individuals across the ages with TPOXX.”

Huntington Hospital has had two confirmed cases of monkeypox. Popp expects the virus will “likely continue to spread.”

SBUH is working with the Suffolk County Department of Health to provide vaccinations at the Edie Windsor Healthcare Center in Hampton Bays.

CDC and FDA approve new COVID booster with protection against modern strain

As for the flu, Nachman urged residents to get their vaccines prior to the start of the seasonal flu season, sometime between now and November.

The FDA authorized single doses of Moderna’s booster for people 18 and over and Pfizer’s booster for those 12 and older.

Area hospitals continue to remain on the lookout for potential outbreaks of monkeypox.

On the official Suffolk County website, eligible residents can schedule monkeypox vaccinations through Northwell Health at the Bayshore Mall on Sunrise Highway.

As for mental health issues, residents of Suffolk County, as with other communities, have generally seen an improvement amid a relaxation of restrictions that limited social contact and kept people from their routines.

Last week, the Food and Drug Administration gave Pfizer and Moderna Emergency Use Authorization to start distributing their newest COVID booster, which includes protection against the highly infectious Ba.4 and Ba.5 strains of omicron.

Several medical facilities continue to administer the limited monkeypox vaccines.

“I suspect that, at a minimum, those who needed to get a fourth booster (elderly, comorbidity, immune issues) should get” it, explained Dr. Sharon Nachman, chief of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, in an email. “I believe that its approval will include all individuals over age 12.”

“I love this assignment,” Holownia said. “I get to learn a lot about my students in such a short time.” She plans to collate these poems into a poster and will display it in the classroom.Additionally, some new classes are being offered this year. First-year high school students must take a writer’s workshop. Seniors will explore the literary world with genre-specific courses, such as Sports Literature, Contemporary Issues, and Science Fiction/Horror. These classes greatly expand the work the English Department has been developing.

Kingsley starts by bringing his classes to the school’s library so that they can pick out a book. “It’s really powerful,” he said, “and it’s incredible watching students discover new books.” In Kingsley’s class, students have a month to finish the book they’ve checked out, similar to the public library.

District voters will get the final word on the matter this December. In the meantime, the district will hold a series of tours and information sessions to educate residents on the issues at stake in this upcoming referendum.

During a Port Jefferson School District Board of Education public meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 13, the board put two ballot measures out for a public vote on Monday, Dec. 12. The measures deal with infrastructure improvements and upgrades in elementary, middle and high schools. Proposition 1 is an estimated $23.1 million proposal focused on critical infrastructure improvements and updatedPropositionfacilities.2is an estimated $1.88 million proposal that would replace the existing grass field at the high school with turf. Jessica Quinn, the district’s superintendent, weighed on in these developments. “We’re so proud of what the English department is doing,” she said. “Now more than ever, being able to respectfully express yourself and listen to opinions different from your own are critical.” The superintendent added, “I really believe these skills will serve them well.”

The decision to approve these propositions did not come without public opposition. My daughter recently had her Instagram account hacked. It took over a month to resolve the issue. In that time the hackers stole her personal information and used it to sell cryptocurrency. Many social media users are being extorted by hackers to pay ransom money to get their accounts back. In Newsday’s recent interview with Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison, he highlighted an important part of

As we transition to this cyber form of marketing, the question needs to be asked: “Who is protecting our personal information?”Shouldwe be concerned that Apple admitted to listening in on conversations, which they say was due to accidental triggers mainly on Apple pods and watches; or the increase in impulse buying due to analytic target marketing; or the issue of our information ending up on the dark web due to the proliferation of data mining; or the cyber scams targeting senior citizens; or perhaps the recent call from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission for Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their app stores, due to security concerns with China and the recent discovery that the app tracks every keystroke made by its users including passwords and credit card numbers? The problem is that not enough is being done to protect our personal data. Social media platforms need to be more accountable in protecting our privacy, especially when it comes to cybercrime targeting our children.

In a recent letter to state Gov. Kathy Hochul (D), I expressed my concerns with the issue of data privacy and social media platforms. As we have experienced with the opioid epidemic crisis, if big corporations and government don’t work together to protect consumers, it can have a devastating effect.

PERSPECTIVE

In addition to gang violence, social media has become the superhighway for drug sales which have led to an astronomical increase in opioid overdose deaths. And currently, Suffolk County is in the midst of a data breach that has closed down all county computer networking.Cybermedia titans, including the billionaire owners of Google, YouTube, Waze, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, need to be held accountable when it comes to protecting the public. Consumers may seem like grains of sand in their datamining operations, but there needs to be limits on how much information a company can mine. California, Maine and the European Union have instituted restrictions on data mining, including opting in when asked for a person’s personal data to be sold to a third party instead of automatically having one’s personal information be taken. It’s time New York State does the same.

The Republican proposal literally tears apart the 5th Legislative District as we know it, separating it into three different county legislative districts. Stony Brook and western Setauket would be shifted from the 5th to the 13th District, represented by Legislator Rob Trotta (R-Fort Salonga); the southern portion of the district would be shifted to the 4th District represented by Legislator Nick Caracappa (R-Selden); and the eastern portion of the district including portions of Port Jefferson and Port Jefferson Station would shift into the 6th District which extends to Wading River, and is currently represented by Sarah Anker

However, members calling attendance seemed to be the only unanimous outcome of the night, as the three Democratic appointees clashed with their Republican and Conservative Party counterparts throughout the evening.

The meeting got out to a rocky start after an unsuccessful motion to adopt an agenda. Schaefer then presented three maps that the committee requested during the previous session.

Schaefer’s final presentation was a map that followed the boundaries of Proposal 2, one of the two original draft proposals which met fierce opposition during the public hearings.

Schaefer first presented a “map of least change.” This map addressed only Council Districts 2 and 6, the two districts whose populations fall outside the 5% deviation allowable under the Town Code. After a

County’s 5th Legislative District under attack by partisan gerrymandering

The 5th Suffolk County Legislative District is under attack by those seeking to divide the population of these communities over several county districts so that our influence in county matters is significantly reduced, our ability to elect our preferred candidate is diminished, and the ability of voters to hold an elected official accountable is undermined.Thisattackwould be of no surprise to those fighting off current partisan attempts to make significant changes to the existing boundaries

of Town of Brookhaven Council Districts 1 and 2, which if adopted would crack off large chunks of Port Jefferson Station from Terryville, and cut Mount Sinai in half — severing communities of interest and diminishing voter influence. Unable to meet its deadline this week, the Brookhaven Redistricting Committee has failed to put forth a map that accurately reflects changes in population, communities of interest and racial diversity.

Laura Ahearn was a candidate for NYS 1st Senate District in 2020.

Following a contentious virtual meeting on Monday, Sept. 12, the Brookhaven Redistricting Committee failed to reach a compromise on a proposed map, sending the redistricting process to the Brookhaven Town Council.

With some adjustments to the boundaries of CD1 and CD2, this new map kept much of Proposal 2 intact.

Visit our website, tbrnewsmedia.com, to follow features on this important issue: “Brookhaven redistricting debacle: An open letter from the Democratic caucus”; “Brookhaven Redistricting Committee meets mapmaker, requests three new draft proposals”; “Residents, elected officials fight to keep PJS/Terryville intact”; “Brookhaven Redistricting Committee goes to Comsewogue, residents fire back”; and “Local residents rally to resist Brookhaven redistricting plans.”

Redistricting affects political power, what issues policy and lawmakers prioritize, and whether issues affecting our diverse communities are represented or excluded. When those responsible for drawing district maps do so to favor one political party, the potential for fair representation suffers. We must take action to keep together our communities in Stony Brook, the Setaukets, Port Jefferson Station, Terryville, Port Jefferson and other villages together as they are now.

Schaefer also presented a map that loosely follows the proposal of Coram resident Logan Mazer. On the whole, the Mazer map was viewed favorably during the public hearings. However, this proposal was ultimately shot down by another 3-5 vote, with the same committee members voting for and against it.

The Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America Vigiano Brothers Lodge 3436 held a memorial service at Harborfront Park on Sunday, Sept. 11, to honor two brothers who lost their lives on 9/11.

“The guy was a cop’s cop,” Johnston said. “He was shot on three separate occasions and could have easily gone out on a disability. He decided that he didn’t want to do that and just wanted to continue on as a police officer.” He added, “Anything that he could put service into, he did. … His legacy is a legacy of service.”

Student-musician Nicholas Smirnov, a violinist, gave a moving performance with his renditions of “America the Beautiful” and “God Bless America.” It was a fitting tribute to honor those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

Given the Vigiano family’s example of duty and sacrifice, Johnston believes the naming of the lodge is a fitting tribute. “It’s a great way to remember Joe and who he was, what he represented, what he brought down to his family and how they represent him,” he said. Brother John Vigiano was an FDNY firefighter.

Anthony Rotoli Jr., president of the lodge, explained the intent of the memorial service. For lodge members, it is an annual reminder of the sacrifices and heroism of first responders who risked their lives in the line of duty. It is also a way to honor the many lost on that fateful occasion.

9/11

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School again participated in the Port Jefferson Fire Department’s annual 9/11 memorial service.

The Warriors rallied to stay alive, winning the fourth set and forcing a fifth and final game. Despite a late-game Warrior surge, the Red Devils held on for the 3-2 victory.

At 0-3 to start the season, the Comsewogue boys volleyball team searched for that elusive first win during a road game against the Center Moriches Red Devils on Monday, Sept. 12.

Following the departure of the 11 a.m. ferry, the day’s festivities commenced with a parade of sailboats, with each boat donning the name of a disease victim. By 1 p.m., the ships were out at sea and off to the races.

wind died and the race wasn’t completed.”

The coronation did not take place until June 2, 1953, but what a glorious affair it was with celebrations in every city, town and village. Some 20 million viewers were able to watch the glittering, expensive ceremony from Westminster Abbey live on television, with many households — including ours — buying their first TVs, in black and white.

The new King Charles III, her son aged 73, caught the moment when he said in a statement, “I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.”

Loucks said he had been a longtime participant and supporter of this event, noting the valuable public benefit this fundraiser performs.

Actor Ralph Macchio, whose wife, Phyllis, is a nurse practitioner at Mather, has served as this event’s celebrity ambassador for several years. He commented on the thrill of being out on the Long Island Sound amid the beautiful weather, all while supporting an important cause.

I saw her in person twice, both during my management spells at Midland Bank, Haywards Heath, West Sussex, in the 1970s and ‘80s. The first occasion was when she visited the neighboring headquarters of the Royal Commonwealth Society for the Blind. Imagine my surprise when I was walking to my car after work and, with nobody else around, she passed by me in the royal vehicle with no motorcade or security guards in sight. I swear she gave a little regal wave. The next time was when she presented prizes at the South of England Show in Ardingly, where the bank’s meet-and-greet pavilion gave us a ringside view. There was a majestic aura that seeped from her as she beguiled everybody at the agricultural showground — as she did elsewhere in a long lifetime of public service.

Also on hand was village trustee Lauren Sheprow, who participated in her first regatta this year. She said she had never helped sail a boat before but enjoyed the experience of learning on the “Itjob.was an amazing experience,” Sheprow said. “Our captain was an amazing instructor. He brought us into the experience, gave us our own jobs and we were able to do them.” She added, “From a fundraising perspective, this was an incredible idea.”

I am a member of the knighted Mick JaggerElton John-Paul McCartney generation (where did I go wrong?). It was Jagger who summarized our thoughts when he tweeted, “For my whole life Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, has always been there.” And now she isn’t. The second Elizabethan era is Theover.queen’s death Sept. 8 in Balmoral, Scotland, has been covered extensively by the media. founded the Prince’s Trust. For a while I was a trust business counselor in Ashford, Kent, and can attest to the value of the scheme for young entrepreneurs. Another factoid is that he has been patron of The Goon Show Preservation Society. The website noted, in the spirit of the groundbreaking 1950s comedy show, that “we would like to thank Prince Charles for agreeing to be our patron and look forward to the coming years with trembling socks.”Britain now has a novice king and a novice prime minister, both unelected by the people at large. There are difficult days ahead for a country badly hit by the coronavirus pandemic, the self-induced Brexit debacle, inflation currently running at 10% with soaring energy costs due to the Russia-Ukraine war, rumblings on the Scottish independence front, possible Irish trade confrontation, threatened departures from the Commonwealth and, indeed, concern for the future direction of the monarchy itself.

Such basic facts obscure the sweeping social and economic changes she saw in her reign, without revolution or revolt, from postwar austerity and the Swingin’ ’60s through to post-modern Britain, even as the sun set on the old British Empire. Soon the currency notes, coins and postage stamps bearing her likeness will be phased out and replaced.

It is not widely appreciated that Charles

East Setauket resident John Broven is copy editor and proofreader in the TBR editorial department and has written three award-winning music history books. He recently edited and contributed to “New York City Blues” by Larry Simon. His three Brexit articles can be found online at tbrnewsmedia.com.

It was like a “JFK” or “9/11” remember-where-you-were moment when the news broke Thursday, just after 1:30 p.m.

What of King Charles III, who represents continuity and has made a promising start to his reign. An often unfairly misunderstood man, he has been ahead of his time on environmental matters, wildlife preservation and climate change. His views on architecture were more controversial if personal. On a different level, his image was severely dented by the disastrous marriage to Diana, with whom he had William — now heir to the throne as Prince of Wales — and currentU.S. resident Harry. Charles married longtime flame Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005 and she is now queen consort. Time has gradually healed the British public’s disdain toward them both.

Personal reflections? My first big memory was in relation to the death of Elizabeth’s father, King George VI, in 1952 while she was on a trip to Kenya, East Africa. I was in Mrs. Vidler’s class at Polegate Primary School, East Sussex, and you could hear the proverbial pin drop when we were told “the king is dead.” A dark February Wednesday morning became even darker. In our childhood grief, we had no idea nor cared that the queen’s first prime minister was Winston Churchill. She was only 25 when ascending the throne.

20, 1947; became queen of the U.K. and other Commonwealth realms on Feb. 6, 1952, also head of the Church of England; was a working mother with four children including Charles; and owned a string of corgi dogs and racehorses through the years.

The 13th annual Village Cup Regatta, a boat race between the Village of Port Jefferson and Mather Hospital, returned on Saturday, Sept. 10.

EST: hasElizabeth“QueenIIdied.”For this Brit expat, it was a big shock even though she was 96 years old. Only two days before, she had held the “kissing the hands” ceremony with new prime minister, Liz Truss (C).It became clear the queen’s loss was being felt far beyond the United Kingdom as tributes poured in from every corner of the globe, signaling the enormous impact of a 70-year reign during which she performed her often centuries-old duties with wisdom, dignity, gentle good humor and an essential mystique.

Among those representing Team Port Jeff was village trustee Stan Loucks, who described what it was like to be sailing during a windless afternoon. “We were out on the water, and a lot of boats were there,” he said. “Unfortunately, the

Still, as President Joe Biden (D) and First Lady Jill Biden said in a statement, “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was more than a monarch. She defined an era.”Thank you Queen Elizabeth II — and God save the king. The state funeral, combining solemnity with pageantry, will be held Monday, Sept. 19, at Westminster Abbey, London, at 11 a.m. (6 a.m. EST).

Letters to the Editor

I find it appalling that Ms. Kerr, or anyone, misquotes or misrepresents what was actually said during the president’s speech. He specifically referred to MAGA Republicans as extremists and further stated, “Not every Republican, not even the majority of Republicans” represent MAGA ideals.

The ongoing intimidation of election officials by MAGA militias is reminiscent of the Brown Shirts of the early 1930s in Germany, and is a clear danger to democracy. Yes, our democracy is in grave danger brought about by one man and his MAGA enablers.

BidenHer[D].letter of Sept. 8, [“Biden fails at uniting nation”] was wrongheaded, and clearly misunderstands what he said. The president accused only MAGA Republicans of being a danger to democracy, not all Republicans. Further, the characterization of Biden as “Adolfstyle” was out of line and beyond the pale of reasonable discussion.

The anti-democratic MAGA movement

Reflection on the loss of the Queen

As a Brit with 42 years on the clock in the U.S., I have become used to those looking on me with bemusement or suspicion for not taking citizenship but tolerated for my strange British sense of humor nevertheless.

If trying to bully state officials into falsifying the vote isn’t anti-democratic, I don’t know what is. If trying to bully the vice president, Mike Pence [R], to violate the Constitution and decertify the vote of the Electoral College, I don’t know what is. If refusing to concede an election President Donald Trump [R] knew he lost isn’t antidemocratic, I don’t know what is. If broadcasting the Big Lie that the election was stolen isn’t antidemocratic, I don’t know what is. If instigating an insurrection designed to intimidate Congress into decertifying the election isn’t anti-democratic, I don’t know what is.

Biden asked that the American people join in the defense of our democracy, our Constitution and the rule of law.

He is survived by his partner Linda Rothman; sister Susan Feiner and husband Marc Goloff; niece Sophie Goloff and husband David Lee; nephew Benjamin Goloff; and cousins Richard and Carol Cherry; Rebecca Cherry, husband Dyami Valentine and son Theo; also Melissa Cherry, Maxine Berman, Eileen Blank; Gail Papaconstantopoulos, husband Dimitri, daughters Rea Papaconstantopoulos and Lia Davis, husband Ben Davis and daughter Eleni. The funeral took place on Sunday, Sept. 11, at Plaza Jewish Community Chapel, 630 Amsterdam Ave., New York.

Millions of good Americans have been duped by this conman, who has done nothing to deal with their real pain. Now the very democracy which we celebrate and on which we all depend is threatened.

Jeffrey deeply loved the outdoors and nature — hiking, biking, sailing, skiing. He was also passionate about music, especially jazz and blues.

Jeffrey Mark Feiner, 75, of Miller Place passed away on Sept. 7. He was born in Rye to the late Samuel and Zelda Feiner.

In sadness, some random thoughts follow: “Keep calm and carry on,” stiff upper lip, queuing peacefully, moaning about the rules (usually created by the French pre-Brexit) but obeying them to the letter (unlike the French), driving on the left, the National Trust and its stately home treasures from the past, Twickenham, Wembley,

It is tragic that the once-invaluable Republican Party has mostly supported this man. Instead of trying to deal with the real causes of dissatisfaction that have fueled the MAGA movement, most of the Republican Party has pandered to it while giving tax cuts to the rich.

I am writing in response to Susan Kerr’s letter to the editor [“Biden fails at uniting nation,” Sept. 8] regarding President Joe Biden’s [D] speech on Sept. 1.

Wimbledon, Ascot and Lords, Last Night of the Proms, Prime Minister’s Questions, meeting Princess Diana, being able to travel anywhere in the world where my origins, language and culture are at the minimum accepted and respected, not having to know the names of those appointed on merit from within the judiciary to serve on the nation’s Supreme Court, fish and chips, compassion never better expressed than by Ralph McTell’s brilliant comment on homelessness in “Streets of London,” a respect for history and its anachronistic imposition of a system of government where the head of state has been loved and respected by all. Finally, and above all else for all of my life — Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, acknowledged simply as “The Queen” throughout the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and the world.

Letter writers should adhere to facts

It has been touching to have received from local friends “deepest and sincere condolences” for my loss as though I was a member of the Royal Family myself. A mark, I know, of the respect held here for Queen Elizabeth II, the Anglophile feelings she generated and an acknowledgment of what being British means to me.

Nowhere in his entire speech did the president refer to, as quoted by Ms. Kerr, that “all Republicans of being prone to violence.”

So, then what does it mean to me to be British?

On Sept. 7, Mather Hospital cleared 2 acres of forest to make way for a parking lot — over substantial opposition from residents, and while a legal challenge was still ongoing. The Village of Port Jefferson permitted a dangerous precedent and Mather implemented it. The clearing spelled out to the residents that their voices are to be ignored.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ON A21

Options include reconfiguration of the site to maximize previously cleared land and programs to reduce reliance on flat parking lots. It is perplexing the degree to which Mather Hospital claims to be an environmental steward and social justice champion, and meanwhile was hell-bent on clearing the forest.

It is painful to see the Planning Board pick and choose who to challenge. The board maintains it had no authority to demand changes in the hospital clearing plan because the code is silent on specifics of the Mather project — a stance that I challenge in court.

By Ana Hozyainova

On a national stage, two U.S presidents are in a tug-ofwar for the soul of our nation.

This year, I canvassed over a thousand residents in the village election. The extent to which many gave up on the local government was shocking. Many residents no longer vote, nor attend public hearings or Town Hall meetings precisely because they do not believe that it matters, punctuating our conversations with the refrain, “There is no point, why waste myThetime?”overwhelming majority of received comments on the Mather master plan objected to the clearing. Objections included written statements from 69 residents, a majority of whom live near the hospital. Joining the opposition were the Four Harbors Audubon Society; Brookhaven Town Councilmember Jonathan Kornreich (D-Stony Brook); Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket); the village Architectural Review Committee and the Conservation Advisory Council; and the county Department of Economic Development and Planning. All urged the Planning Board to reduce the surface parking lot and outlined practical ways to do so.

When Mather cleared 2 acres of forest, our village government became that much less trustworthy and less democratic. This clearing is case in point why so many residents are convinced that the village has no respect toward its residents or their future.

All who care about the future of the environment and government of Port Jefferson should attend.

We are wrestling with these unsettled questions right now. At the local level, our citizens learn how systems operate. With this understanding, we begin breaking down the great questions into bite-sized, manageable tasks.

What does it mean to have a representative voice in government? What is an equitable distribution of public resources? How and where should we build, and to what end?

In time, we will accumulate small wins. This formula can be scaled, meaning we can soon apply our takeaways from local politics to the higher levels of government.

A local environmental group, EcoLeague, will sponsor a protest against Mather cutting the forest on Sunday, Sept. 18, 1-3 p.m., on the corner of North Country and Belle Terre roads in Port Jefferson.

field 60 years ago, although as most Long Islanders know the majority of Long Island’s acreage was once farmland and some of it now supports healthy, valuable second growth forest (an oak can grow to 40 feet in 60 years).Revealing ignorance of basic ecological science, the representative described the woods as containing mainly invasive species and “songbirds, for example sparrows.” However, observations by trained naturalists have revealed that the forest is home to many species of trees and other plants, reptiles and amphibians, mammals and over 40 species of birds, the majority of which are indigenous. Most suburbanites see a wide variety of wildlife, especially birds, on their property, and think that the animals live there. However, many wild creatures seen in the suburbs need dense, contiguous forest to build their nests or burrows, and venture into housing developments only temporarily, for instance to forage for food.

Northwell Health tried to argue that cutting 2 acres would not affect the quality of the habitat in the rest of the forest. This is untrue. A forest consists of edges and the actual forest. The edges, which contain more invasive species and immature vegetation — and extend as far inward as 100 feet from the

We hold that this bottom-up approach is the best course of action, both for our residents and nation. Locally, our voices ring louder, our votes weightier. Let’s fix our problems here first, then set our sights on issues further from home.

Letters to the Editor

Tellingly, Northwell Health never bothered to commission an environmental study of the effects of cutting the forest itself as part of its planned expansion. In the 96page official document of the expansion plan, the forest is mentioned only in terms of using its acreage for a parking lot.

At the public hearing in March on the expansion, a Northwell representative gave an unconscionably brief description of the impact of cutting 2 acres of the forest. She dismissively spoke of it as having been a

forest perimeter — do not provide the food and shelter of a deep forest. So the smaller the forest becomes, the less, proportionally, remains as valuable habitat for indigenous plants and animals.

Regardless which way the court decides, the Planning Board’s stance is hypocritical — the board has requested multiple site plan alterations for an affordable housing project, despite the fact none of the board’s requests are codified.

It is also puzzling that despite the promise

Distrust is corrosive. When citizens do not trust in their government, they are less likely to report problems before they snowball, discuss important issues or seek solutions. Distrust in public institutions isolates residents, making the village life unpleasant, if not dangerous.

Earlier this month, President Joe Biden (D) and former President Donald Trump (R) presented disparate visions for the American future. Despite diametrically opposing messages, one theme unifies these speeches: Americans stand at a crossroads in our history, and our trajectory is Numerousundecided.problems plague our policymakers in Washington, from national security, economic uncertainty, immigration policy, among many others. In the face of these seemingly unanswerable questions, we must remember that all politics is local. Before we can even consider pondering the great questions of our time, we must first get our affairs in order here at the community level.

It’s revealing that Northwell Health never bothered to study the forest in its role as irreplaceable habitat or consider the value for residents’ mental and spiritual health of its quiet paths. They disregarded the opinions of the many concerned residents who wrote and spoke at their public hearings. As the recent heedless and underhanded razing of 2 acres of the woods demonstrates, they deliberately ignored the devastating toll on nature and townspeople that the expansion would exact.

We must first create a solid foundation to build something meant to last. May we heal this divided but unbroken nation. May we find solutions to problems both near and far. And may we never lose faith in the principles that unite us as community members and Americans.

Despite a lawsuit having been filed to prevent this action, as part of its expansion Northwell Health unexpectedly cut down a section of woods behind Mather Hospital [part of Northwell] that is beloved by townspeople.Bythisact, nature itself was dealt a blow, and here’s why. Some 10 years ago, Port Jefferson had 44 acres of forest. Now we have only 35 — a loss of almost one-fifth. As environmental expert and Stony Brook University professor Jessica Gurevitch has explained, the approximately 10-acre Mather forest represents part of the Harbor Hill glacial moraine habitat, of which only scattered remnants still exist.

A tragedy occurred in Port Jeff this week

To heal a wounded nation, start locally

From town and village halls to school boards, environmental demonstrations, civic meetings, and everything in between, our residents grapple with the most pressing issues confronting our communities. We find particular examples of the nation’s broader, systemic issues within these forums.

I’m skipping over the years of squeaky violin music being practiced in the apartment to the left of ours, the midnight screaming by the couple two apartments further down the hall, the acrid smell of cooking from the apartment to the right of us each night, and so many other instances giving proof that we were not alone in our building.

Of course, we made noises, too, and otherwise let our presence be known. That was apartment living and somehow, we all survived it.

The next morning, as crowds continued to grow, the police pushed the newer arrivals in front of the group, which meant Phillip was in the third tier of Throughonlookers.thecrowd, he caught a glimpse of the young queen, offering a stiff wave to her subjects.

The Evans matriarch, 83, who is a retired diagnostic radiographer, is amazed at the effect the queen’s death is having on residents.

“She had a really bad time when Princess Diana was killed,” said Philip Evans, who retired in 2000 as a general surgeon. “She was just pulled down by the power of the press. In legalese, ‘she was badly advised.’”

Before Elizabeth’s coronation at the age of 27, Philip Evans, who was a teenager, traveled with his brother Anthony to Trafalgar Square, where

one problem per month. Usually, the breakdowns seemed to caucus with each other and happen all at once.We still love our house. You might ask, why? The answer is simple. We have found a handyman. Just as every first baby should come with an instruction manual, every house should be accompanied by a handyman. This person is a quiet, unsung hero. He, and it’s almost always a he, arrives with little fanfare shortly after he is called, carries two screwdrivers, a regular and a Phillips head, a hammer, a wrench, maybe some tape and seemingly little else. He squats down and patiently analyses each problem, pulls out the uncomplicated tool and sets everything right.

During the Platinum Jubilee for Queen Elizabeth II to celebrate the monarch’s 70 years on the throne, Clary Evans, a radiation oncologist who works at Northwell Health, her husband Tobias Janowitz, a scientist at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and their families got together with another English family to mark the occasion.

you grew up in an urban apartment, as I did, you would marvel, as I do, at living now in a house. Some of my earliest memories involve neighbors in the building. For example, I loved to play jacks, a game on a hardwood floor with a bouncy rubber ball and 10 small metal pieces (called jacks), each to be lifted after the ball bounces but before it drops. When played, it surely made tapping noises on the ceiling of the apartment below, but that was nothing compared to the banging with what was probably a broomstick that the downstairs neighbor used to retaliate. The jacks trembled with each blow, and I certainly trembled at the attack. I remember bursting into

People were saying “the queen had done a good job” and that they believed her son was “well suited” for his new role.

tears and running to find my mother.

“It was a marvelous thing to do,” Evans said by phone from his home. The travel and waiting in the rain meant it “wasn’t easy.”

But unlike in the service, there was no one to call who would cheerfully arrive, fix the problem, then wish us a good day and leave. Oh, we could summon repair people to come, but when they left, we were less than cheerful. They had each gone off with a large chunk of our disposable income. In fact, we were lucky if we didn’t have more than

Now this person is not easy to find. In fact, there must be several unsuccessful trials before Mr. Right comes along. Ask your neighbors, your friends, your cousin, the hardware store, anyone who might help with a referral, but they may not want to share. Good luck!

Oh, and did I mention that he doesn’t ask a month’s mortgage?

After a night filled with an early June rain in 1953, Evans and his brother awaited the moment to see the queen, whose coronation occurred 16 months after she became queen.

Philip Evans has noticed that the church bells ringing in the aftermath of her death don’t have their typical sound.

The first time I lived in a house was when my husband was in the air force, and we were in base housing. To me, it was miraculously quiet, even though airplanes flew in regular intervals over our heads. “Someday we will have a house of our own, yes?” I asked my husband and kissed him when he agreed.Sothen we moved to the North Shore of Long Island and had our own house. That was when I discovered that a house was a living thing. It needed tending regularly. The toilet wouldn’t flush, the kitchen faucet dripped, the light fixture sizzled out, the venetian blind got stuck in the open position, the dishwasher wouldn’t dispense soap, the cabinet door was askew, there were ants in the basement and the front door knob threatened to fall off.

Gillian Evans, meanwhile, traveled with her family to visit her aunt, who, at the time, was the only one in her family who owned a television.

From left to right, Tobias Janowitz, Clary Evans, Albert Janowitz, Wolfie Janowitz, Gillian Evans, Viola Janowitz and Philip Evans. Photo from Clary Evans

Residents of Suffolk, England, Evans’s parents Philip and Gillian shared memories and thoughts on Queen Elizabeth II, who died last week at the age of 96.

While Gillian Evans thought such conditions

“What a remarkable lady she had been,” Gillian Evans added. “She said she would give herself to the nation for as long as she lived, and she did. Right up to the very, very last, which is wonderful.”

As the country prepares for the funeral of a queen born eight years after the Spanish Influenza pandemic of 1918 and who died two years after COVID-19, Clary Evans recognized that Queen Elizabeth II was a “link to those values of duty and service that were strong in those war and post-war years.”

The queen executed her duties admirably under an intense spotlight that never dimmed during her over 70 years of service, she added.

They made a cake and had tea, “aware that this was probably the last time” they would celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s lengthy legacy, Evans recalled in an email.

During a recent visit to the ophthalmologist, Evans chatted with three people about the queen and her son Charles, who has now become King Charles III.

“It was lovely to see what a beautiful spectacle it was,” Gillian Evans said.

Philip Evans, who said the queen did “jolly well,” recognized that the queen made mistakes, one of which arose during her muted reaction to the death of Princess Diana in a car crash in 1997.

Canadian Royal Mounted Police aerobic exercises were popular then, we had bought the book and were in the first few lunges after work one evening when there was a loud knocking at our door. When my husband opened it, an older couple shouted at us that we were bringing down the ceiling on their heads, and what were we doing up there, anyway?
