Join the Port Jefferson Free Library on Sunday, Sept. 20, for a discussion of Harper Lee, the author of one of the most popular books that deal with race relations in the United States, “To Kill a Mockingbird.” The southerner recently released her second book, “Go Set a Watchman,” 55 years after her first was published. The story, like “To Kill a Mockingbird,” is seen through the eyes of Jean Louise “Scout” Finch and returns the protagonist and hero Atticus Finch, Scout’s father. The books are set in the fictional Maycomb, Ala., the first in the 1930s and the second in the 1950s.

Village caught in headlights over deer hunting Belle Terre officials got an earful at Village Hall on Tuesday night, as residents and visitors debated a proposal to allow deer hunting in the village over the sounds of jeers and the din of snide remarks. At a public hearing over the proposed law, which the board of trustees developed in response to complaints about experiences with an increased deer population, more people spoke against hunting than in favor, shifting at least one trustee’s opinion. Comments touched upon issues of public safety and health as well as quality of life. Yuri Farber was part of the minority speaking in support of hunting, saying the deer are destroying his property and he wants the village to offer him protection or allow him to do something “to get rid of this nuisance.” “This is just not fair,” he said, noting that he would have recourse if it were a human destroying his plants. But many speakers favored leaving nature alone. Chris Nelson said, “It was their foliage before it was ours,” and he likes the environment in his village. Dr. Mike Fracchia, to applause from the audience, said falling trees — such as the ones sent flying during a powerful and unexpected storm in early August — were a larger threat to

villagers than deer and the animals were “a nuisance that I’m willing to tolerate.” Other arguments in opposition to deer hunting in Belle Terre included perceived flaws in the proposed law that would define hunting too broadly or make a new set of regulations impossible to enforce. One woman, who identified herself as a pediatrician, warned the village board

that with every law there are people who abuse it. According to the proposal, residents and their guests would be allowed to use weapons such as crossbows, BB guns or similar devices other than firearms to hunt on their own properties at least 150 feet away from any home, as long as they have state hunting licenses and a permit

from the village. But many worried a child would get caught in the crosshairs. Dr. Ken Rosenthal held up a broadhead arrow he found at his front door one day, to gasps and murmurs from the audience. The concern about the welfare of playing kids was repeated throughout the night. Residents also debated whether hunting deer would produce the result desired. While some said they were worried about contracting illnesses such as Lyme disease from the ticks deer carry, others said many smaller creatures, such as raccoons, carry those ticks as well. And the pediatrician, a Seaside Drive resident, noted that there are diseases everywhere and “unless we’re going to live in a bubble” we take risks in everything we do. There were calls for compromises and for the board to do more research into sterilization methods, related costs and the actual size of the deer herd in Belle Terre, as some speakers acknowledged deer as a problem, but the sentiment in the room leaned heavily against allowing hunting. Jaime Ivory produced a petition of 209 signatures against the proposed village law, representing more than 100 households. Her husband Brendan told the board to “go back to the drawing board.” DEER continued on page A17

Long Island man brings first responders’ fight to D.C. Locals hope to sway lawmakers to renew crucial 9/11 health care benefits By Victoria Espinoza

John Feal speaks at the september 11 memorial ceremony in commack last week.

143119

The 9/11 first responders who have fought for years to get health care support are heading back to Washington, D.C., in hopes of ushering in the renewal of the James L. Zadroga 9/11 Health & Compensation Act. And for one Nesconset resident, change cannot come soon enough. “When this bill expires, our illnesses do not expire,” said John Feal, founder of the FealGood Foundation, in a phone interview. Feal, of Nesconset, has been walking the halls of Congress for the past eight years to help get this bill passed. He is also a 9/11 first responder who worked on the reconstruction at Ground Zero, and lost half of his foot in the process. He suffered from gangrene, but he says his injuries “pale in comparison to other first responders.” President Barack Obama signed the current Zadroga act into law in 2011 and established the World Trade Center Health Program, which will expire in October if not renewed. The WTC program ensured that those whose health was affected by 9/11 would receive monitoring and treatment services. It consists of a responder program for rescue and recovery workers and New York City firefighters, and a survivor program for those who lived, worked or went to school in lower Manhattan on Sept. 11, 2001. The Zadroga act also reopened the September 11th Victims Compensation Act, which allows for anyone affected to file claims for economic losses due to physical harm or death caused by 9/11. That will expire in October of next year. The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Reauthorization Act would extend the programs of the original Zadroga act indefinitely. It was introduced to Congress in April and has 150 bipartisan co-sponsors. Feal said he was asked by television personality Jon Stewart to come on “The Daily Show” five years ago, but he did not want to leave the real legislative fight in D.C. Instead, he helped get four 9/11 responders to the Dec. 16, 2010, episode, to help shed light on the ongoing battle these responders were dealing with in Congress. “He was definitely one of the reasons the bill got passed,” Feal said of Stewart. Stewart accompanied Feal and many other first responders when they traveled to Washington, D.C, on Wednesday, Sept. 16, and took part in a mini rally. The original bill did not pass the first time it was presented to Congress in 2006. A new version was drafted in 2010 and passed in the House of Representatives, but was having trouble getting through the Senate due to a Republican filibuster. The bill received final congressional approval on Dec. 22, 2010, and was enacted by the president on Jan. 2, 2011. “As we get older these illnesses will become debilitating,” Feal said. “Not extending this bill is criminal. People will die without it. It’s a life-saving piece of legislation.” Jennifer McNamara, a Blue Point resident and president of The Johnny Mac Foundation, is also active in the fight to keep responders’ health costs covered. Her husband, John McNamara, died in 2009 from colon cancer. He was a New York City Firefighter and worked more than 500 hours at the World Trade Center in the aftermath of 9/11. He worked with responders to get support for the Zadroga bill before he died. “I made him a promise to continue to lend support to get this legislation passed,” Jennifer McNamara said in a phone interview. When her husband died, she said there weren’t as many responders getting sick as there are now. “People are dying more quickly, and more are getting diagnosed with cancers and other illnesses.” The two big issues that McNamara said she feels need to continue to be addressed are monitoring these

diseases and coverage of costs once someone is diagnosed. McNamara said she believes that if there were better monitoring programs earlier on, her husband could have been diagnosed before his cancer was stage IV, and he could have had a better chance. “These people did tremendous things for their country,” McNamara said. “They shouldn’t have to guess about whether they are going to be taken care of.”

Row, row, row your dragon boat

A scene from last year’s dragon boat races.

File photo by Bob Savage

Dragon boats will splash into the harbor for the second year in a row on Saturday, Sept. 19, for the Port Jefferson Dragon Boat Race Festival. The Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce is hosting the event, which will kick off at the harborfront park off East Broadway at 8:30 a.m. The opening ceremony will include an Asian color guard, and Buddhist monk Bhante Nanda, of Long Island Buddhist Meditation Center, will bless the fleet of dragon boats before the 24 competing teams take off.

In heats of four, the teams will use 20 paddlers, one steersman and one drummer to complete a 250-meter course. There will be an awards ceremony afterward. Festivities also include musical and dance performances, cultural displays, crafts, food and a raffle. The event, rain or shine, will run until 6 p.m. Admission is free. For more information about the festival, call 631-473-1414 or visit www.portjeffdragonracefest.com.

PEOPLE

Successful start to the school year Under warm and sunny skies, Port Jefferson school district students eagerly arrived at school on Sept. 8 ready to begin a new year of learning. Upon arrival at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School, students were greeted by balloons and smiling staff members who assisted them to their classrooms. At Port Jefferson Middle School and Earl L. Vandermeulen High School, students were welcomed back with an array of purple decorations that adorned the schools’ hallways. Students at all buildings quickly became acclimated to their new schedules and routines. “We are looking forward to another successful school year,” Superintendent Ken Bossert said. OBITUARIES Helen Ward Helen M. Ward (nee Maxwell), of Port Jefferson, died in her sleep at home on Sept. 5 after stoically fighting the effects of Parkinson’s disease. Born in Queens in 1928, Helen grew up in Bellerose and graduated from Jamaica High School. She later worked at Duane Jones Advertising Agency. In 1950, she married Harry E. Ward. The Wards settled in the historic Victorian “Barnum House” in Port Jefferson. While mothering six children, Helen held service roles in the Suwasset Garden Club, Suffolk County Girl Scouts, Infant Jesus Church, St. Charles Hospital Auxiliary, 4H Club and Catholic Daughters of America. In 1977, she was elected village trustee, with Hal Sheprow as mayor. Helen served the village for 12 years as deputy mayor, chief fiscal officer and liaison to the recreation department. Her determination helped lead to many accomplishments, including those relating to the country club golf course, tennis courts, beaches and wetlands

love of family and friends. Helen is survived by her husband; sons, Damian and Justin; daughters, Kathie, Amy, Andrea and Laura; sonsin-law, Peter, Ron and Michael; daughter-in-law, Brandy Ward; and grandchildren, Spencer, Victoria, Olivia, Erica, Brady, Harrison, Jillian, John and Ryan. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Hope House Ministries, www.hhm.org, in Helen’s name would be appreciated.

Peter Havens Peter Havens, who lived at Echo Arms Adult Home since 1994, died on Aug. 15, a week short of his 70th birthday. Peter lived his life in obscurity. Prior to moving into Echo Arms, he had been at the Kings Park state hospital. At Echo Arms, Peter’s forays into the community consisted of walking to the shopping center. However, in later years and as a heart condition developed, he was dependent on Harry Katz, the home’s operator, to drive him to stores for his shopping needs.

Afflicted with mental illness all his life, Peter nonetheless was a giant of humanity — a generous, kind and compassionate man who did wonderful things for others. At his expense, every few months Peter treated the Echo Arms residents to feasts of pork chop dinners, Kentucky Fried Chicken or pizza. Peter and Harry prepared the meals or had them delivered. On a disposable income of $193 a month, Peter’s largesse and generosity touched a community of more than 50 people, and he never expected anything in return. Peter was a gentleman of great dignity and erudition, a man whose mental illness consigned him to a sheltered but relatively happy life. Peter and Harry experienced great joy during their little jaunts, listening to music of The Seekers, an old folk group. There is no doubt that Peter, who had once seriously considered entering a monastery, was a seeker himself. God bless you, Peter, for your life and for everything you did for those around you.

Boats bring in bucks for cancer research

Port Jefferson Yacht Club hosted its sixth annual Village Cup Regatta on Saturday, raising funds for pancreatic cancer research through the Lustgarten Foundation and for John T. Mather Memorial Hospital’s palliative medicine program. The regatta pits the hospital and Port Jefferson Village against one another in a friendly competition for the Village Cup, a trophy which the hospital has now won two years in a row, following a village reign of three years. Participants raised about $64,000 for the cause through this year’s race, according to yacht club member Chuck Chiaramonte. The sum will be split between the Lustgarten Foundation and the palliative care program, which is focused on improving patients’ quality of life. Chiaramonte said over the six years of the regatta, the event has raised more than $300,000. The yacht club — formerly known as the Setauket Yacht Club — supplied the boats and captains for the event, which included a parade of boats, games and face painting for children at the harbor-

front park, and a trophy presentation at the adjacent Village Center. Chiaramonte said the yacht club looks forward to the event every year. “It was really meant to just be a joyous occasion and share the love of the water and boating with our neighbors,” he said. — ElAnA GlowAtz

Warriors nab first win in shutout at Rocky Point Boys’ soccer

Comsewogue . . . . . . . 5 Rocky Point . . . . . . . . 0 By DeSirée Keegan

The Comsewogue boys’ soccer team got the ball rolling. In League V action Friday, the Warriors invaded Rocky Point territory and blanked the Eagles, 5-0, to earn their first win of the season.

“Today was a big improvement,” Comsewogue head coach Don O’Brien said. “We’ve been struggling with some injuries and today we finally put a team on the field. They executed the offensive system of play and we created a lot of chances.” Comsewogue sophomore forward Luis Hernandez scored first less than four minutes into the game from outside the right goalpost, giving his team the early lead. Almost 10 minutes of back-and-forth action later, Comsewogue made another good attempt, but Rocky Point junior

goalkeeper Michael Antici made one of his eight saves of the day. Despite Antici’s efforts, the Warriors found the back of the net again before the halftime break. With 3:30 left, senior midfielder Nick Towler headed the ball off a corner kick into the right side of the goal to give his team a 2-0 advantage. “I was going toward the goalie and just saw the ball coming and hit it in,” Towler said, laughing. “I wasn’t trying to do anything special.” The Warriors were gunning to get another one at the start of the second half, but didn’t capitalize until senior midfielder John Koebel scored off a foul kick that had been sent into the box and rebounded off an opponent. On the other end of the field, Warriors senior goalie Steven Towler made a couple of strong saves during the second half to preserve the shutout, but overall did not see much action. Comsewogue senior midfielders Jake Muller and Trevor Kennedy tacked on the final two goals of the game, the latter lighting up the scoreboard when Antici tried to catch a corner kick but instead sent the ball bouncing off his hands and into the net. The victorious Warriors were optimistic about the future, despite losing some of their top playmakers to graduation last year.

“I think we need a little more experience,” Nick Towler said. He is one of this year’s starters who was a sub last season, and he thinks he and his counterparts are “really holding the team together.” Rocky Point head coach Joe Camarda was disappointed with his team’s effort. “They played very flat,” he said. “It just wasn’t our game today. They didn’t really step up the way we’ve been playing, so it was one of our weaker games.” Through the midfield and attack, Camarda said his athletes weren’t BOYS’ SOCCER continued on page A14

patient enough to get opportunities and finish them. Rocky Point senior defender Jimmy Gohn agreed. “We just had an off game,” he said. “We had some OK plays every now and again when we blasted the ball and made some connections up top, but unfortunately we didn’t get too many of those and didn’t do well clearing the ball in the back.” But Camarda thinks his team has what it takes to be a contender in League V. “This is, to me, one of my best teams,”

he said. “Talent-wise and attitude-wise, they’ve really come together. I think we’re going to have a good season and surprise a lot of people, but if we play like today, I don’t think we will.” O’Brien said that after a performance like the Warriors had, he’s looking forward to seeing what the rest of the season holds for his squad. “The game plan was executed to perfection — we just have to keep building and get better,” he said. “I knew it was going to take some time for them to work together offensively to create chances, and that’s exactly what they did today. They’re getting better every game, just like we thought.”

Trustee Bob Sandak changes his position on the proposed deer hunting law in Belle Terre.

DEER Continued from page A3

“This code needs to be thrown out,” he said about the proposal. “You know it.” The debate had Trustee Bob Sandak changing his public stance on deer hunting in the village. In a previous interview, Sandak said he had been leaning toward voting in favor of the hunting law because he wanted to

do what the majority of the community wanted. But at Tuesday night’s meeting, Sandak got up to the podium and explained that the proposed regulations would only allow about four or five properties in Belle Terre to legally hunt, and the deer would leave those properties if hunting began. Gasps and applause erupted in the audience when he said, “So as far as I’m concerned, a hunt at this point is ridiculous to consider.”

In honor of September’s National Recovery Month and the upcoming National Substance Abuse Prevention Month in October, a Long Island group is hosting a candlelighting event to support struggling or recovering addicts and families who have lost loved ones to addiction. Dan’s Foundation For Recovery, a nonprofit Stony Brook resident Dori Scofield recently formed, is holding its second annual Lights of Hope event at Port Jefferson Harbor on Sunday, Sept. 20. The event, from 7 to 9 p.m., will take place at the memorial park on West Broadway across from Village Hall and will include a candlelighting ceremony, fundraising raffles, live music, refreshments and guest speakers. The New York chapter of support group The Addict’s Mom is co-hosting the event. OPINION Law has flaws TO ThE EDITOR: We are writing in opposition to the Brookhaven Town Board’s plan to restrict the usage of our public roadways based on homeownership status. The introduction of local law 82-10(G) “Registered Motor Vehicle Restrictions” would create two separate and unequal laws regarding which town residents are permitted to park vehicles on town roadways. While it is certainly in the town’s purview to determine how our roadways should be used, our laws should apply equally to all.

It is unwise to create restrictive laws meant to apply only to certain members of our society — in this instance, based on their homeownership status. If the Town Board feels street parking regulations are necessary, then those regulations should be implemented townwide. To target only certain residents for selective enforcement is un-American and quite possibly illegal. John Feal speaks at an event advocating for first responders in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001.

EDITORIAL

Never means never

The definition of hero is a person who is admired, or idealized, for courage. And we can’t think of a more courageous act than stepping up and putting others first in the aftermath of a tragedy like the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack. When the dust had settled on that horrific day, elected leaders stood hand-in-hand with our first responders, whether they were firefighters, police officers or just volunteers. The narrative was that we would honor their sacrifices and do whatever it took to back them up, long after the debris was removed. And yet here we are, 14 years later, making them wait to see whether the government will have their backs when they need it most. Never forget, right? This week, Nesconset native John Feal headed to Washington, D.C., alongside other heroic first responders from across the Island, state and country to call on Congress to renew the James Zadroga 9/11 health and Compensation Act. Originally approved five years ago, the legislation helped provide health care and programs to more than 33,000 of our first responders and their families because of complications stemming from their efforts at Ground Zero. But that legislation is slated to expire next month, and it’s not clear whether it will be renewed. What happened to doing whatever it took to support our heroes? It is shameful to have this same discussion every few years, once legislation expires, because all that does is turn these people into political bargaining chips. To us, that doesn’t seem like a worthy reward for their sacrifices. It’s time to take permanent action so people like Feal and the many others who worked alongside him know that we will have their backs — because they had ours when we needed it most.

Politics: show biz for ugly people TO ThE EDITOR: The following is in response to the letter “Debate recap,” published in the Aug. 27 issue of the Port Times Record. Bravo, Stephanie, for paying attention. Citizens should value the privilege of voting by familiarizing themselves with candidates of both parties. I watch Fox. I watch MSNBC. We all have our prejudices — I mean preferences. In these polarized times, it be-

hooves us not to restrict ourselves to a few news outlets. Be grateful for Fox, the outlier in the media world. I watched the Republican debate and found it very entertaining, as did reportedly 24 million other people. Wow. The highest rated viewership for such an event — it set records. Now that’s participation. There are 16 contenders for the GOP. Fox narrowed the field to the top 10 participants on stage. What a diverse group and variety of backgrounds and talents. Pundits are calling this cast of characters a “deep bench.” Meanwhile, Democrats are try-

Letters …

ing hard not to have a coronary. Ah, the velvet voices of Brooklyn Bernie, Sorry O’Malley, Tech Savvy hillary, and Crazy Joe. I just can’t wait for September, or October, or is it November? When are Democrats going to get around to a debate? Will the debate answer the question posed by Chris Matthews to Debbie Wasserman-Schultz: What is the difference between socialism and the Democratic Party? Careful — don’t wait too long … some of those sailors could slip off the raft. Cynthia Russell East Setauket

The academic angels of Back to School Night

D. None of the above by DaNiel DuNaief

vtimes@tbrnewspapers.com

T

he night starts off with the top dog standing in front of a packed auditorium, selling all of us on the idea that what our children are about to receive in the form of another year of education at their fine institution is a spectacular blend of academic learning, extracurricular opportunities, social growth and development, and personal inspiration.

Ah, can’t you just hear the academic angels singing? Somewhere in that magical evening known as Back to School Night, the principal and his or her vice-principal minions suggest how spectacular the teachers are, how magnificent the community is, how incredible the resources are and, most of all, how wonderful the parents are for being involved and coming to this Evening of Champions. These people who are in these top academic positions are often doctors, although they’re not the kind with stethoscopes and they don’t have a waiting room full of old copies of People magazine. They assure us that they’re people, too, and that they’ve been where we are. They know what it’s like to have someone they’ve brought into the world treat them as if they’re somewhere between an athlete’s foot fungus and a pimple surfacing on the tip of their nose just before the most

incredible moment of their lives. But, wait, there’s more. Their teachers tell us what they’ll learn, they smile, shake our hands — and assure us how excited they are to be sharing in this experience with our wonderful children. Wonderful? Seriously? We can only hope that’s the case when they’re in school because the “wonderful” has been squeezed out of them by hormones that turn their voices into violins with broken strings, by their tough-love coaches, and by their would-be girlfriends and boyfriends who have decided that today is perfect to send them a text saying, “Sorry, we can’t date anymore because I’m looking for someone better.” It’s almost like one of those old-fashioned sing-alongs, where we watch teachers with their Smart Boards at the front of the room, following the bouncing ball as it wows us with one after another of the stops on the journey to enlightenment.

For comic relief, we might get to hear from a teacher who seems about as comfortable speaking in public as I did when I was in seventh grade. He might look down at his feet as he talks, read from a script or take two huge gulps before each sentence. Speaking in front of a group of people, we realize quickly, is not exactly the ideal way to spend his day. As they talk, they tell us how much they love a subject that, truth be told, might not be their first choice. However, the nearest district hiring biology teachers is an hour away and our school desperately needs a language arts teacher. They implore us to share information about our kids. That’s when we reach into our sales bag and suggest how eager our children are to fill their minds with inspiration and information. We plaster an enthusiastic smile on our faces as we hand in our creative writing assignments. We emerge from the school,

ready to take all that sales energy and turn ourselves into cheerleaders for education and our children. “Oh, honey, I met your science teacher last night and she seemed so spectacular.” “That’s interesting, Dad, because my science teacher is a man.” “Wait, are you joking?” The children share a devilish smile, pick up their heavy backpacks and trudge off to a place where the sounds in the real world corridors — real and in their own heads — are often nothing like a chorus of those academic angels.
