Lunar eclipse will be super

We did not invent

Skygazers are in for a special treat this weekend — for the first time in 33 years, there will be a supermoon eclipse. A supermoon occurs when a full moon reaches the point in its orbit that is closest to Earth, known as its perigee, which happens a handful of times a year. The proximity — of about 222,000 miles — makes the moon look brighter, and it appears about 14 percent larger. The supermoon on Sept. 27 and 28 will coincide with a total lunar eclipse, which occurs when the moon passes through Earth’s shadow, covering its surface in a red tint. That red tint occurs because of the refraction of light through Earth’s atmosphere on its way to the moon. According to NASA, a supermoon eclipse is a rare event. It has happened only five times since the beginning of the 20th century — in 1910, 1928, 1946, 1964 and 1982 — and those who miss it this weekend will not have another chance to catch it until 2033. As a bonus, it will also be a harvest moon, which is the full moon closest to

the autumnal equinox on Sept. 23. On the East Coast, a partial eclipse will begin at 9:07 p.m. on Sept. 27, according to NASA, with the total eclipse beginning at 10:11 p.m. It will last a little more than an hour before returning to a partial eclipse. The full event will end at 12:27 a.m. on Sept. 28. At the time the partial eclipse begins for New York viewers, the \moon will be about 26 degrees above the horizon, in the east southeast direction. It will gradually move higher and southward in the sky, so that at the time the partial eclipse ends after midnight, the moon will be about 50 degrees above the horizon to the south. — Elana Glowatz

North Shore lawmaker pushes drug stewardship plan Kara Hahn’s prescription medicine take-back proposal aims to enhance Long Island’s drinking water quality By Phil Corso

A two-tiered piece of legislation on the county level is looking to tackle some of Long Island’s most pressing issues, from the medicine counter to the waterways, all in one fell swoop. A proposal to establish a drug stewardship program throughout the county could potentially build upon existing drug take-back programs, playing off recent legislation enacted in Alameda County, Calif., and ultimately keep drugs out of our drinking water, lawmakers said. Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket) introduced the piece of legislation earlier this summer with hopes of providing residents with more convenient ways to get rid of their unused medicine before the county’s next general meeting in October. “This is a duel benefit,” Hahn said. “I’ve wanted to find a way to get pharmacies to be required to take back prescription drugs, and this doesn’t quite require that, but it could be an end result.” The local law proposal argued that while pharmaceuticals are essential to

the treatment of illnesses and long-term conditions, residents at large still do not dispose of them properly, running the risk of certain drugs ending up in public drinking water supplies and causing harm to the environment. And with Suffolk County sitting on top of its sole source aquifer, which provides residents with necessary drinking water, Hahn argued that protecting the aquifer was critical to the health and safety of Long Island as a whole. “The idea is to begin a discussion on this. Federal regulations have changed to allow pharmacies to take back certain drugs, but the state level has been dragging their feet on the local regulations in order to make this possible here,” Hahn said. “They can’t drag their feet any longer. All kinds of medicines are being found in our water when our health inspectors do their sampling. We have to find a way on both these fronts to control what is happening.” The legislator said she was playing off the recently passed law in California, which also established a drug product stewardship policy requiring manu-

facturers to design and fund collection programs for medications. Similar programs have also sprouted up in Canada, France, Spain and Portugal. A spokesman for Hahn said the bill would essentially establish a manufacturer-administered pharmaceutical

take-back program that would provide residents with convenient ways to safely and environmentally responsibly dispose of expired and unneeded medications. “This program, if adopted, will primarily impact and improve water quality rather than deal with drug abuse,” Seth Squicciarino, the spokesman, said. “However, it is reasonable to assume that if there are less unused, unneeded and forgotten prescription drugs in medicine cabinets, it could reduce drug experimentation, especially among first-time users.” Currently, residents’ only course of action when looking to properly dispose of unused medicine is to bring their prescriptions to the 4th or 6th Precinct of the Suffolk County Police Department, which then dumps the drugs into an incinerator — which Hahn described as the most environmentally friendly way to dispose of drugs right now.

Turn in dangerous or illegal animals at amnesty event

143400

Residents can turn in any protected, endangered or threatened animals that require special New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service permits without fear of penalties or questioning on Saturday, Oct. 10. Brookhaven Town’s second Amnesty Day at the Holtsville Ecology Center will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and people owning dangerous or illegals animals will be able to hand them over to trained professionals from the town, the DEC, the wildlife service and the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The agencies will relocate animals turned in that cannot be kept at the ecology center. “All too often people will harbor unlicensed or illegal pets without realizing the dangers they pose or the amount of care they require,” Highway Superintendent Dan Losquadro said in a press release. “This often leads to these animals being dumped by someone who once had it as a pet. An example of this

is the 25-pound alligator snapping turtle that was recently found in the Nissequogue River in Smithtown.” That turtle, a freshwater reptile that officials said had enough power to bite off a human finger or toe, was discovered in the stream opposite the Smithtown Bull on Route 25 in Smithtown in late August. It is not indigenous to Long Island — it is usually found in the region from eastern Texas to the Florida panhandle. At the Amnesty Day on Oct. 10, residents can “do the right thing for the safety of their neighbors and for the well-being of these animals,” Losquadro said. Last year’s town event saw 25 animals turned in at the ecology center, including a western diamondback rattlesnake, a green anaconda, four boa constrictors, an American alligator and two marmosets. It was the most successful amnesty event the SPCA has ever had. “The purpose of this effort is to get these illegally possessed animals into a controlled environment where they can be cared for properly,” SPCA Chief Roy Gross said. “People who are in possession of these animals unlawfully can turn them in to us without fear of prosecution. No one will be asked to give their name.” The ecology center is located at 249 Buckley Road in Holtsville. For more information, call the Suffolk County SPCA at 631-382-7722, NYSDEC at 631-444-0250 or U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at 516-825-3950. — Elana Glowatz

Crafty ladies are such dolls By Giselle Barkley

The women of Crafters for a Cause usually help their students learn to paint, but this summer the ladies decided to help people outside of the classroom. Members Betty Baumach, Linda Hallock, Virginia “Jennie” Sweeney, Jane Del Prête, Kathy Sciacchitano and Martha Palermo recently donated a handmade dollhouse to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital to help fight breast cancer through its Fortunato Breast Health Center. The dollhouse will be raffled off at next year’s Families Walk & Run for Hope, an annual springtime fundraiser. The women started building the roughly 2-foot-tall dollhouse in June. According to Baumach, a Lake Grove resident who leads the group, which meets at the New Village Recreation Center in Centereach, the volunteers teach people various forms of painting year-round — except during the summer. “During the summer the teachers don’t teach,” Baumach said in a phone interview. “We still wanted to get together anyway so we said, ‘Oh, what could we do this summer to fill the time?’ so I suggested building a dollhouse.” Baumach got the idea to donate the

house to the Port Jefferson hospital because she brought her sick aunt to Mather in the past. She had previously built five or six dollhouses, including this particular model of house, so drawing the plans was simple. Like all of Baumach’s dollhouse projects, it was made without a kit — the women designed and built each component by hand. Until it is raffled off, the dollhouse will reside in the office of Cindy Court, the

hospital’s development coordinator. The eight-room house includes a living room, a dining room, a bedroom, a bathroom and a sewing room, among others. According to Court, the crafters brought individual boxes of furniture to decorate the house the day they donated it to the hospital. “Each builder was responsible for decorating and furnishing one of the eight rooms,” Court said in an email. “They precisely [placed] each piece, down to

the smallest detail.” The group didn’t plan on furnishing the dollhouse until Sweeney found furniture on sites like eBay and Craigslist. Baumach provided the materials to build the house and was responsible for cutting and shaping the pieces used for its exterior. Court said the group used tongue depressors to make the roof shingles. “I think it’s wonderful this group of women put so much time and love into DOLLHOUSE continued on page A8

Drug-testing kits free for parents Parents who are concerned their children may be using drugs can get their hands on free drug-testing kits through the “Test, Don’t Guess” initiative, run by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office and the Brookhaven Town Youth Bureau. The program, according to a press release from the town, “provides an important tool to engage in the critical conversations about drug use.” In addition to the drug-testing kits, parents who visit the youth bureau will

be offered information about resources for professional help and treatment. “No one should feel that they are alone when struggling with a child who abuses drugs,” Supervisor Ed Romaine said. “Help is only a phone call away and I urge parents to take action now. Give the Youth Bureau a call, pick up a kit and do whatever you can to save your child’s life.” For more information or to pick up a kit, call the bureau at 631-451-8011.

Local manager keeps customers coming back By Giselle Barkley

Smile. That’s what Gary Shek tells his employees at Wasabi Steakhouse in Miller Place. As the manager of the hibachi restaurant, Shek’s main concern is providing good service by tending to the customers and ensuring high-quality food — two reasons that encourage new and repeat customers to return to the restaurant. The four-star establishment opened March 23, 2014. Since then, Shek is usually the main employee greeting guests when they arrive, and sends them off when they leave. While it may take him a couple tries, it doesn’t take long before Shek remembers the names and faces of his customers, which adds to the guest’s experience. “Let’s say I see your face [one time], a year later, I will still say hi,” Shek said. “You make [the customer] feel like [they are really important]. Of course, business is very important, but the customer, you have to make them feel like family.” According to Shek, some hibachi restaurants focus on having a classy or elegant style, while he wanted his restaurant to be more family oriented, since many of the residents he serves are families who may remain in the area until their kids graduate high school. Kenny Ching, one of the owners of the restaurant, has known and worked with Shek since the mid-1990s. They met while working at the Secret Garden Tea Room in Port Jefferson. Ching said working with Shek is easy.

“I don’t have any pressure,” Ching said. “He can handle [work] pretty much himself. I don’t have to follow him. Training managers isn’t always easy.” Shek credits his management skills to working in the hotel business in Hong Kong before he moved to Long Island in 1990. It was at the hotel where Shek tried to remember the names of hotel guests. It wasn’t until he transitioned to the restaurant business that Shek saw the difference between the hotel and restaurant business. “From the hotels I [saw] the international [people from] different countries,” Shek said. “But here, [there are] local residents so I have to keep smiling every day [even if] I have a bad day.” From 1995 to 1998 Shek also managed a Chinese restaurant for one of the

individuals who owns Wasabi Steakhouse alongside Ching. Although Shek and Ching have to remember more types of dishes now than they did working at Chinese restaurants, they do their best to serve their customers and answer questions about the menu. The service, as well as the food, is what keeps customers like Diana McGeoch and her family and friends coming back to Wasabi Steakhouse. “We come here all the time,” McGeoch said. “Too many [times] to count. Fifteen-plus maybe.” “And he remembers us every time,” Brain Murray, a friend, said after McGeoch. “[The atmosphere is] very warm and welcoming. [Shek remembering our names] makes you feel special when you

come here.” Jean Casola of Rocky Point is another customer who dines at the restaurant for its service and high-quality food. Casola discovered the restaurant last year when she was celebrating her wedding anniversary. “First of all, the service is amazing and polite beyond belief. Then the food comes out just the way you want it,” Casola said as she ate her dinner. Shek said the restaurant goes out and picks up fresh cuts of fish and meats nearly twice a week, but also has fresh food delivered nearly five times a week. Leftover food is discarded after a day or more passes. According to Shek, some restaurants turn this food into an allyou-can-eat buffet. While Shek acknowledges that people come back for the food and for hibachi, he doesn’t believe people come back to the restaurant because of him. “I just want to be a successful manager,” Shek said. But customers like Casola think differently. Recently, Casola helped her daughter Faith pack for Pfeiffer University in North Carolina. She said her daughter misses eating at the restaurant, and in 30 days, so will Casola. She and her husband are moving to North Carolina to be closer to their daughter, but packing up means leaving Shek’s service and food at Wasabi Steakhouse. “I don’t think they’re going to have anything like this there,” Casola said. “And they’re just not going to have another Gary, that’s for sure.”

The Port Jefferson Board of Education honors members of the district’s technology department for their hard work.

In its effort to recognize the hard work of staff and students, the Port Jefferson Board of Education honored members of the district’s technology department at a board meeting on Sept. 8. The technology team, made up of five district employees and two Earl L. Van-

dermeulen High School student interns, was honored for the numerous hours of work they put in over the summer to prepare for the new school year. “The work they performed over the summer was extensive,” Superintendent Ken Bossert said in a press release.

According to Brian Sandak, the network and systems administrator, district technicians worked alongside student interns Max Okst, a sophomore, and Maxwell Famularo, a senior, to set up SMART Boards, computers and printers throughout the school buildings.

Royals on three-game streak with win over Babylon Girls’ soccer

Port Jefferson . . . . . . 4 Babylon . . . . . . . . . . . 1 By Desirée Keegan

After dropping the first two nonleague games of the season, the Port Jefferson girls’ soccer team is back on track after topping Babylon Monday, 4-1, to continue a three-game League VII winning streak. “Coming from being Class B and beating them in the Suffolk County Championship last year and now dropping down to Class C, it is definitely a big win for us today,” head coach Allyson Wolff said. “In the beginning of the season we played

some tough opponents in Ward Melville and Center Moriches and we felt like the girls weren’t talking or communicating, so we worked on that and our passing in practice, keeping it simple and playing to feet — not just trying to kick the ball — so I feel we definitely stepped it up for this game.” Port Jefferson sophomore goalkeeper Brianna Scarda made several big saves to keep the score 0-0, and the Royals had some chances at a goal early on, but Babylon’s defense came up with the stops. Although opening the second half still in a stalemate, the Royals were quick to make up for lost time after speaking with Wolff at halftime. “At halftime I told them that they weren’t playing our game,” Wolff said. “Babylon was beating us to the ball and stepping in front of us, and I told them that if we were going to let them do this, then we’re not going to win. I told them that they have to want it and it has to come from their heart, and told them that the other team looked like it wanted it more than they did, and I think that got them angry and sparked something.” Less than four minutes in, junior forward Jillian Colucci beat out the Babylon goalkeeper, who came out of the box to try and make a save, and shot the ball into the right side of an empty net off an assist from junior midfielder and forward Clare O’Connor, for the 1-0 lead. “I knew I was going to get the pass, so I started running and felt the defense on my back, but I was able to touch it past the goalie and did whatever I could do to

continue to touch it into the net,” she said. At the 29:48 mark, after O’Connor sent the ball into play, Colucci attempted a goal through a swarm of defenders, and junior midfielder and forward Brittany Fazin put out her foot to stop the rebound and sent the ball into the right corner for a 2-0 advantage. Off another assist from O’Connor, who crossed the ball into the box after a foul

call, Colucci scored her second goal with a straight shot up the middle through traffic and past the keeper. She followed it up with her hat trick goal when, again, the Babylon goalkeeper came out of the box, leaving the net empty. “The game was intense, and it always is against Babylon,” Colucci said. “Since we’re only playing them once this season we knew we had to step up and play them

What helped the Royals was that the team was playing to feet instead of chasing the ball in the air like they did in the first half. “We don’t have good control of it [in the air], and when they play things to feet it’s pretty, it’s beautiful and it makes things happen,” assistant coach Michele Aponte said. “They’re a stronger group of girls together, especially getting to the level they got to last year. They want it.” Port Jefferson travels to McGannMercy Friday, for a 4:30 p.m. game. The Royals have topped the Monarchs all six times they faced their opponent in the last three seasons.

as hard as we could and keep our record strong against them.” Scarda made a save, her last of 18 on the afternoon, exactly three minutes after the Royals’ final goal to preserve the clean sheet for the time being, but after a goalie change, senior Noelle Zimmermann gave up a goal with 5:07 left to play, to bring the final score to 4-1. “We really, really earned it,” Scarda said of the win. “All the nerves that we had — being scared about the game, we took and converted into our skill and our playing. We got our heads in the zone every chance we got and we trained very, very hard leading up to this game.”

Some North Shore communities are grappling with what to do about their deer populations.

Meals on Wheels is alive and well.

Help put more meals on wheels To The ediTor: We would like to thank the people who deliver Meals on Wheels for always coming in with a smile on their faces and a happy greeting. Before they leave, they always ask if there is something they can help us with.

They are volunteers who take time out of their busy schedules to help others. A friend said that she didn’t think Meals on Wheels existed anymore, as you never hear anything about it. Let me tell you that it’s alive and well. if you would like to give to a good cause, please consider them. There are people who need this service but cannot afford it. You

can help. it’s an organization that does not haunt you every two weeks or so for a donation — they contact you once a year. Their address is: Three Village Meals on Wheels, P.o. Box 853, Stony Brook, NY 11790-0853. Thank you for any help that you can give. Shirley & Bill Leonard Port Jefferson

That’s an order To The ediTor: Never in the history of this nation has such an insidious movement created so much confusion to the very fiber of our society. The innocent lambs, the American people, now follow the shepherds of destruction that

are altering the very structure of our freedom. Not since the darkest days of World War ii has our nation been subjugated to the lies, deception and distortions we now experience. The present abuse of bypassing Congress with executive orders creates a Congress in name only. This practice shall in time allow a

despot to totally corrupt our structure of government, leaving our freedom in ashes. With the coming election, let us once again reaffirm the gift of freedom granted by our Founding Fathers. God bless America. Leonard J. henderson Port Jefferson

At what point does a neighborhood nuisance become a problem that warrants lethal action? A few North Shore communities have been debating whether to legalize hunting deer in their residential areas, after complaints relating to an increase in their region’s deer population. Hunting advocates say the ticks deer carry have been transmitting Lyme disease to humans; the animals are eating their garden plants; and the deer are moving traffic hazards. As a result of the complaints, Huntington Town officials have given residents of Eaton’s Neck the green light — under certain restrictions — to hunt deer with longbows on their own properties. Officials in Belle Terre Village, after receiving emotional pushback from many community members, did not take action on a similar proposed hunting law. The issue is still up in the air in Head of the Harbor, where officials recently floated a proposal to allow hunting there as well. There are many problems with allowing people to hunt deer in a residential location: It will not have the desired effect; it is an unreasonable and disproportionate response to nature; and there is great potential for negative consequences. It’s not a problem for nature to occur around Long Island, it’s merely a fact of life. We hear residents bemoan the loss of open space and cry out against development. Well, this isn’t “The Sims” life simulation video game — we can’t cherry pick the greenery and sprawling beaches, and kick out the deer. Or rather, we shouldn’t. There are nonlethal ways to patiently deal with the deer issue: Spray deer and tick repellant in your area; use tick repellant on yourself when you go outside; check your body and clothes for ticks when you hang out in tall grass or woods; use plants that deer do not eat; and drive slowly on small back roads that are surrounded by woods. Let’s not forget that hunting is dangerous in a residential area because accidents can — and do — happen.

Think twice before hitting the reply-all button

D. None of the above by DaNiel DuNaief

vtimes@tbrnewspapers.com

T

o reply all, or not to reply all, that is the question. But, seriously, when is replying to everyone by email necessary? I know we live in a world where we share every thought that occurs to us because we can. Distributing our thoughts electronically to as many people as possible gives new meaning to the words “publish or perish.”

Still, something about replying all is the equivalent of spraying graffiti, with your initials on it, in my email box. I already get more than enough emails from all the stores that send me hundreds of discounts a day. With all these discounts, I feel like an idiot for paying the listed price for anything. But I digress. I know there are times when replying all is helpful. You see that the conference room is unavailable. Sharing the news will allow everyone to be more productive through the day. There might be a time when you need everyone on a list to know something, like not to park on a side street where the permitparking-only signs might be hard to see. But do all 100 of us on a long email distribution list really need to know that you, specifically, received the email? Not only do people tell us they got the message we all received, but some of them feel the need to embarrass themselves

in the process. A teacher asks all the parents in her six classes to confirm that they received her message. A reply-all message that says: “The Smiths received the email and couldn’t be more excited about the start of a new school year. Every morning, Johnny can’t wait to sit in your class,” is a surefire way to sabotage Johnny as he navigates through the middle school minefield. Then there are the simple emails that don’t require any reply, such as an email with the address of a field or a meeting. “Got it, Dan. We’ve been there so many times before.” Of course you know where it is — everyone knows where it is. The directions and the address for the GPS make it possible for everyone to get there. Seasonal greetings are not, repeat not, an opportunity to hit reply all, especially when the group includes people you’ve never met. An email that “wishes everyone a healthy and a happy start

to the new school year” is not an opportunity to echo the same, exact thoughts to strangers. “So do we” is not an appropriate reply-all response, nor is “Ditto for us” or “Same to everyone else” or “The Dunaiefs feel the same way.” Adding emojis doesn’t make the email message more personal. It’s like doodling next to your graffiti. Cut it out, people — we’re not all 12. I’m tempted, when these replyall messages come through, to write something snarky, but in a distribution list that includes people I don’t know, someone will undoubtedly take it the wrong way because, let’s face it, there’s always someone ready to take offense. Then there are the reply-all messages that seem to highlight a specialized talent or experience. Someone might, for example, be asking people to bring baked goods to a party, a meeting or a fundraiser. By indicating that you’ll bake miniature tarte tatin, crème brûlée or flourless chocolate soufflé, you seem to be brag-

Adding emojis doesn’t make the email message more personal. ging first and contributing to something a distant second. It reminds me of that old joke about an 80-year-old man who goes to a priest to confess that he spent a magical evening with two 25-year-old women. The priest, in shock, asks the gentleman how long it’s been since last confession. The man said, “Confession? I’ve never gone to confession. I’m not religious.” The skeptical priest replied, “So why are you telling me this?” “Are you kidding?” the man answered. “I’m telling everyone I know.” Daniel Dunaief’s recent book, “The Other Parent,” may be purchased online from www.tbrnewsmedia.com/ebooks.
