CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY: In its 28th annual Black History Month celebration last Thursday, Feb. 26, Huntington Town officials and keynote speaker Errol Toulon Jr., above center, gathered to deliver a message of perseverance to a nearly 400-member audience at Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School in Huntington Station. Toulon, who is the deputy commissioner for operations of the New York City Department of Correction, fought off two bouts of cancer during his distinguished criminal justice career. His advice to the audience? ‘Never stop learning, take breaks, but never stop learning.’ From left, Jillian Guthman-Abadom, Peter Gunther, Toulon, Gene Cook, Jo-Ann Raia and Tracey Edwards.

Northport-East Northport full-day K study almost done Recommendations could come next week 2015-16 school budget. Officials have said in the past that the study — which looks at district demographics, projected student enrollments, and space utilization — will help them make decisions about the possibility of full-day kindergarten and whether or not to close school buildings. Western Suffolk BOCES began the study in September. Prior to that, the most recent data on projected enrollment was compiled in 2008. Many at Monday night’s standing-room-only crowd wore bright red and gold badges that declared “Full Day K.” PTA Council co-presidents Ellen Hatch and Donna Kleinman read a statement from the council, which they described as a “position paper,” in support of full-day kindergarten. A much-anticipated, longrange planning study which examines the feasibility of full-day kindergarten will be completed soon, Thomas Caramore, Northport-East Northport school district’s interim school superintendent said this week. Speaking at Monday night’s school board meeting, Caramore said he expected to receive the report from Western Suffolk BOCES “any day.” “I hope to make a recommendation to the board next Monday regarding kindergarten, and I would hope the board would give me direction in regard to the budget,” Caramore said. Next Monday’s meeting, to be held at 7 p.m. in the Brosnan building, will focus on the district’s proposed

District resident and employee Jen Howard addressed the board at a meeting on Monday, asking for an explanation of why she was not granted all the sick days she said were donated to her by colleagues when she took time off to care for her son. Howard asked why former Superintendent Marylou McDermott was paid for unused sick leave, when she resigned her position with the district earlier this year. McDermott was released from her contract early by the school board, and the superintendent said her

resignation was prompted by the need to care for her ailing mother. Howard’s son, teenager Frankie Pitti, died in December, 2013. Howard received a standing ovation from the audience. Board President Julia Binger expressed concern for Howard’s loss, and reminded the audience that personnel matters can’t be discussed at a board meeting. “You’d actually be violating someone’s rights if you did that,” Trustee Donna McNaughton added. McNaughton noted that if McDermott had not been released from her contract, and

instead remained on the job and taken family medical leave, she would have been absent from work during the district’s budget deliberations. “What would the district look like, where she would take a week off, and then come back? That was a very disjointed process,” she said. Trustee David Badanes said that if McDermott had remained school superintendent while tending to ongoing family concerns, the district would have been unable to hire Caramore. “Personally I think we saved money and we had a new leader, and we did not give away the store.”

later on, they said. “We respectfully request every effort be made to include full-day kindergarten in the 2015-16 budget,” Hatch and

Kleinman concluded. School board President Julia Binger thanked the council for their input in the ongoing discussion of full-day kindergarten.

Teachers union, district resumes contract talks

United Teachers of Northport President Antoinette Blanck spoke at a NorthportEast Northport school board meeting on Monday, telling the audience that the union was scheduled to resume contract negotiations with the district on March 4. UTN members have been working without a contract since July 1 of last year. Blanck said the crowd of UTN members at the board meeting was there not in protest, but “in a show of unity that we will move forward as a district.” In an October interview, Blanck said that pay raises

and quality of life issues are the focus of discussions between the district and the 750-member union. —SuSan RiSoli

heather Parrot and Kerri Brandine address the huntington school board on monday.

It’s still early in the budget process, but Polansky unveiled the latest figures with which the district is working. So far, officials may have to do some whittling — the draft budget totals $731,099 above the district’s 2.12 percent tax levy increase cap. The district’s greatest expenses, like most other districts, are salaries, pensions and contractual costs. Salary and contractual expenses are budgeted to increase next year by about $2.7 million, to a whopping nearly $78.4 million — or about 65 percent of the district’s working budget for next year.

The school board will host budget meetings in the coming months. A March 23 meeting will focus on instruction and staffing and one on March 30 will be a revenue/budget review. The board is scheduled to adopt a budget on April 13 and will hold a budget hearing on May 11. The budget vote and board election are on May 19. This year, there will be four seats up for election on the school board: those held by President Emily Rogan, board members Xavier Palacios and Tom DiGiacomo and the one vacated by Adam Spector, who died of cancer last year.

Polar plunge on hold

Ice floes on and around Crab Meadow Beach in Northport caused a charity plunge scheduled for last Sunday to be postponed. Public safety officials have advised Camp Sunshine to postpone the Long Island Polar Dip, an annual event to benefit kids with life-threatening diseases who attend the camp and their families. The money from the plunge fundraiser sends kids and their families to the camp, a place where they can relax together for a week and “take a break from the extraordinary demands placed on them on a daily basis,” a press release about the event said. A North Shore legislator is looking to close a loophole that could potentially leave Suffolk County parkland vulnerable. Under current law, when the county uses its eminent domain to take control of local land and then sells the open space to the state, it can essentially use the funding for anything after it hits a general fund. But Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket) is pushing a bill that would require that money instead to go toward acquiring other parkland, further protecting the county’s open space. Hahn said the legislation is a response to a bill that came before the county legislature in June of last year, authorizing the state to buy a 1.5-acre piece of land in Smithtown for public highway purposes along Route 347 for $547,000. The legislator said there was no guarantee that the money the county made on the sale would go toward matters related to Suffolk parkland, which could pose problems if left unchecked. When the county buys parkland, it uses money specifically set aside for land acquisition, funded by sales tax revenues. But there is no specific fund when the money flows the other way, Hahn said. “I just want to make sure any money we are ever reimbursed gets put back in, because [county officials] couldn’t assure me that would happen,” Hahn said. “It’s not something that will happen a lot. I just want to put in place a protection.” At the time the initial Smithtown land purchase was introduced, Chief Engineer Bill Hillman of the county Public Works Department called the purchase a win-win. “They are basically taking 1.5 acres of parks [department] property adjacent to the roadway and constructing a [basin] to handle the stormwater runoff,” Hillman said. “So on face value, it seems to be all positives.” Hahn said the project was essential for the many drivers who utilize Route 347 on a daily basis and called it critical to the backbone of the North Shore but feared the county would get the short end of the open space stick. “We don’t want to give land away, either,” Hahn said at a Suffolk County Legislature Parks and Recreation Committee meeting in July. “If it’s extremely valuable land, and it’s in our inventory, and it’s being taken from us, we should get justly compensated.” Hahn’s bill was introduced in December, and she brought it to the Parks and Recreation Committee for discussion last week.

The Northport-East Northport school board narrowed the search for a superintendent down to three candidates last week before making its final decision.

SUPERINTENDENT Continued from page A1

in the search for a new superintendent since former district leader Marylou McDermott announced she had plans to resign at the end of the school year. However, in January, McDermott resigned earlier than anticipated to take care of her ailing mother. Since then, Thomas Caramore has been interim superintendent. Banzer was pulled from a pool of 28 candidates who applied for the position. Antoinette Blanck, the president of the United Teachers of Northport union, said she and the union are pleased with Banzer. They had the chance to meet with the three finalists on Tuesday, and they felt comfortable with all the candidates, she said. “I look forward to working with him, to be honest with you,” she said in a phone interview last week. “I feel confident that we will be able to have a good working relationship, and that we can collaborate to bring about more positivity and improvements to our district and make Northport what it really can be. And I think he’ll be able to do that.”

Banzer holds a master’s degree from SUNY Albany, with a concentration in social studies teaching, and a bachelor’s degree from Hamilton College, with a concentration in economics. His administrative career includes six years as assistant superintendent for instruction, almost three years as a middle school principal and three years as an assistant principal, all within the Brockport Central School District. He’s been a classroom teacher in three school districts since beginning his education career in 1990; and has served as a football and baseball coach in three school districts and at the University at Albany. Banzer, in a teleconference with reporters last week, said he plans to move to the school district after his appointment is finalized. His current salary at Wayne Central School District is $117,900, he said. “Part of the reason why I became a teacher and educator is I can pinpoint directly to the people in the school district who influenced me tremendously,” Banzer said. ... “So when this came open, I’m in a place in my life where the opportunity to move presented itself, in terms of my family. It was a good time — I found it an opportunity of a lifetime.”

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never Known To Fail) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of heaven, blessed mother of the Son of God, immaculate virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh star of the sea, help me & show me here in, you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity There are none who can withstand your power. Oh show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. (3 times). Oh Holy Mary, I place this cause in your hands. (3 times). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can obtain my goals. You gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me, and that in all instances of my life, you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. M.M. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. The request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor has been granted.

Reluctantly and with great sorrow, he asked us to take her in and find her a new family of her own. Do you have it in your heart to honor this man by caring for his cat?

Together we can make a difference

important causes are only successful when a whole community stands behind them, which is why we are calling on our readers to participate in the upcoming head-shaving events for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to support research into childhood cancers. That participation can be shedding locks or just opening a wallet — either will make a difference. According to the National Cancer institute, part of the National institutes of Health within the U.S. department of Health and Human Services, the most common cancers overall are breast, prostate, lung and colon or rectal cancer. But the most common childhood cancers are types such as leukemia, lymphoma, brain cancer and bone cancer. The institute estimated that almost 2,000 U.S. children and adolescents younger than 19 died of cancer in 2014. While childhood cancers are not

suffering; and there are few losses more tragic than those of lives that had been bursting with potential and dreams unfulfilled. There are small things we as residents can do to help ease that suffering, even

if it is in the slightest of ways. That is why we hope readers of this newspaper will find some way to participate in the St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s cause. For more information about events in your area, see page A2.

Too many commercials TO THE EdiTOr: As a 68-year-old, who remembers when his family bought their first television, during the “Golden Age of Television” in 1950, i’ve seen the amount of sponsors of programs go from as little as one per show to dozens. When television was in its infancy, it was common to see the show’s host step out of character to advertise the one product sponsoring it. in a 30-minute program, only four minutes or eight minutes an hour were spent doing commercials. Then, around 1960, that was extended to 12 minutes hourly, where that figure remained as a standard for decades. Today, with production costs rising, partially due to paying actors exorbitant salaries, the once 52 minute per hour shows have now been reduced to approx. 40 minutes, leaving the public to endure 20 minutes of commercials or a full one-third of airtime. As an example, in a recent “NCiS,” i counted 35 separate commercial “spots,” plus 14 public service announcements or previews of other shows. This meant that after watching approximately seven to eight minutes of the program, the viewers then had to sit through five minutes of commercials, thereby hurting the shows continuity.

Letters …

Commercials are taking over television shows, the letter writer states.

These excessive commercials also require older programs, produced decades ago, to be severely trimmed to conform to current standards. Now, to make matters worse, recent reports state that programmers are actually running some programs at faster speeds to save 1.3 minutes per hour to place yet additional commercial “spots” in that time frame. in my opinion, the only solution left to

viewers wanting to rectify this problem is to call or email the Federal Communication Commission. if thousands or even millions take the time to express their dissatisfaction over this insufferable situation, television network CEOs might “take the hint” to comply with the viewer’s demands and bring the amount of commercials to a reasonable level. ronald Gendron Smithtown

Celebrating the moment with the right cookie

y wife makes the best chocolate chip cookies in the world. I recognize designating something as the “best” is subjective. Sometimes, it’s not what’s in them that counts, but who makes them; although it’s impossible to imagine a softer, more flavorful cookie.

I recently celebrated a birthday with those cookies and, in the moment that I ate them, I could have been five, eight, ten, or even 16 years younger. Maybe I was returning from a run in Central Park, delighted to catch the scent of those cookies as I reached the fourth floor of my five-story walk up. A few weeks before my birthday, my wife and I celebrated a wedding anniversary. While 15 years isn’t exactly a milestone, it’s one of those “0” or “5” numbers that we who live in a base-10 system recognize. When you’ve been married for more than a decade and have kids, you tend to focus much less on “how are we doing” than you do on “how are they doing.” The “they” refers to the small people who look so delightful and charming while sleeping, but who have figured out how to make us see red when they fight

with each other, argue with us or chew through time by checking Instagram, looking at the latest scores, or needing one more snack before moving to the next activity. While we reflect on the relationship that started it all during anniversaries, we hope our spouses know what we’re thinking and what we need on our birthdays, even when we ourselves can’t come up with anything we’d like. And so it was recently, when my family arrived early at one of our birthday restaurants. We go to these places to celebrate the start of another year because they serve kid-friendly food and they and the other patrons are indifferent to a sudden shout, an unexpected move or an argument. We were so early that, to borrow from Dr. Seuss, “We sat in the parking lot, we sat there, we two (plus our kids), and we said, ‘How we wish we had some-

thing to do.’” My wife suggested we go to a batting cage. Our children, who practice softball and baseball through the year, groaned. Neither of them wanted to put on a helmet, find batting gloves and hit another ball at that moment. “It’s not for you,” my wife said, her eyes widening in a way that suggested they shouldn’t challenge her. “It’s for him,” she insisted, pointing to me. I wasn’t sure I needed to hit balls, either. The first batting cage was far too crowded. We found another one just a few miles down the road. I bought a few tokens, borrowed my daughter’s bat, dug in and took a few practice swings. The first contact between bat and ball was like a spark that traveled through my brain and back to my youth, to a time when hitting a baseball was the most exciting thing I could imagine in a day. I didn’t clobber every pitch and I

didn’t win a World Series, even in my mind. I just did what I tell my kids to do all the time: see the ball, hit the ball. I didn’t think about deadlines, responsibilities, or chores. There was no driveway to shovel or dishwasher to repair. There was only an approaching baseball and the tool in my hands to hit it. My wife stood at the entrance to the cage, pumping token after token into the machine, asking me just one question as a satisfied smile spread across her face: “Again?” Daniel Dunaief’s recent book, “The Other Parent,” may be purchased online from northshoreoflongisland.com/ebooks.

t started off simply enough. We were going to get a break from the wicked weather, get out of town and enjoy a little rest. I had fallen on black ice, hurt my back and this would be a chance to recover with no other responsibilities. Sounds innocent, right? So there I am, sitting on a deck outside my hotel room, propped up on some pillows, reading a good book, when my cell phone rings. “Hello, Lee, this is Harold.” It takes me a

moment to register that it is my next-door neighbor back home. “Lee, I just drove up my driveway, and I have to tell you that it sounds like you have a garden hose gushing inside your house. I know you are on vacation, but I thought I should call to tell you. Lee? Lee? Are you there?” I didn’t faint, but I considered it. Here I was, almost 2,000 miles away, and there is water gushing in my house because of cracked pipes. It took me some moments to pull my wits together, such as they were. So what does one do when one receives such a phone call? I offer this as a primer, and I will leave out the hysteria. In rapid succession, I called the plumber, another member of my household who was not home at the time but close by, my friend, another neighbor and the insurance company. After carefully taking down all the details, my insurance company called a restoration company, who came with giant fans to dry things out and a small instrument with twin

sensors to detect where there was water. And there was plenty of water — behind the walls, in the insulation, in the padding under the carpets, in the clothes closets and every other inch into which a droplet might fall. Then there were all the logistics to arrange: someone had to let in the restoration company and be available for them while they worked, someone had to authorize the work, someone had to sort through and mop up the wet and damp things in the rooms. And someone had to keep me informed of what was needed at any given moment. As the days went by, we ran up considerable phone time, and then we were scheduled to return. At that point, we were told two startling bits of information. First, I was assured that I shouldn’t be too shocked when I entered my house. After all, they had to strip the sheetrock, remove the ceilings, take off the light fixtures, transfer all the furnishings from the affected rooms into the

unaffected rooms, and generally rearrange my interior world. That was just part one. Part two was that it was snowing heavily in New York and flights were being cancelled all over the country. This was complication beyond the obvious. With my bad back, I was going to face the prospect of long delays in airport terminals and questionable departures. And the poor driver who was waiting in New York to pick us up and take us home! How long would he be stuck? Little did we, or he, know, he was about to spend the night at my house. Sleep over, you say? Yes, because when he finally drove down the driveway to my front door at 3 a.m. and lifted out the luggage, he discovered his car was stuck on the ice and he wasn’t leaving — at least not until after sunrise, when someone could be called to free him. Storms make for strange bedfellows, so to speak. So he slept uneasily in my most comfortable living room chair as

his wife called to check on him, in the night. And finally, a neighbor who is an early riser perceived the difficulty, got out his snow blower and enabled the driver’s escape. I will confess that, despite the gentle warnings, when I walked into my house and viewed my wall studs and ceiling beams and the general rearrangement of my favorite things, I almost lost it. Furthermore, my back was hurting and all I wanted was to brush my teeth and get into my own bed, which eventually did happen. So, what I can advise at this point, if you are planning a vacation, is to leave a key with one of your neighbors, along with the phone number of your plumber, and directions on how to find the shutoff for the water main. And upon your return, when people ask how your vacation was, just laugh.

Arceri’s title marks the 27th time a Huntington wrestler has won a state crown. The teenager finished the season with a 42-1 record. “I can’t believe I finally did it,” the wrestler said minutes after having his hand raised in the center of the mat. “It’s always been my goal to win the state championship. I thought I could win here this year. I never doubted myself.” Huntington head coach Travis Smith said Arceri’s determination and sheer will to win propelled him to the title. “He just keeps coming at you,” he said. “He simply never stops.” After opening the tournament with a 5-0 decision over Canton junior Ryan Brown, Arceri topped Half Hollow Hills East sophomore Phil Spadafora in the quarterfinals, 4-2. The three-time Section XI champion then nipped Hilton sophomore Austin Hertel in the semifinals, 3-2. Arceri’s first period takedown and third period escape proved to be the difference in the match.
