School: More funds needed to fight LIPA By Rohma aBBas
The court battle over the Northport power plant’s worth — a fight in which millions of future tax dollars hang in the balance — could be costing the Northport-East Northport school district more money next year. In a preliminary budget presentation
on Monday, district officials said legal costs next year will increase nearly 6 percent over this year’s budget — that’s $23,550 more in funding, for a total of $416,550. The increase is largely due to ongoing, years-long litigation with the Long Island Power Authority and other parties. LIPA continued on page A8

Town public safety head resigns By BarBara Donlon
Huntington Town’s Public Safety Director Ken Lindahl resigned this week from his post, a position he held for almost four years. The town board hired an interim replacement at a meeting on Tuesday. In a statement on Wednesday, Supervisor Frank Petrone (D) said he “received and accepted” Lindahl’s resignation that day,
effective immediately. The reason behind Lindahl’s resignation is unknown. “During his almost four years as head of the department, Ken helped improve security procedures at Town Hall and other town facilities, was instrumental in the transition to new parking procedures and parking enforcement and advanced innovative programs at the town’s animal shelter,” Petrone said in the statement. At Tuesday’s board meeting, the board

prove the settlement was added to the board’s agenda at the end of a meeting on Tuesday. Councilwoman Tracey Edwards (D) and Councilman Mark Cuthbertson (D) recused themselves from voting on the settlement. Edwards was on the town’s planning board when the lawsuit began and Cuthbertson was involved in a prior lawsuit with the company. Councilwoman Susan Berland (D), who was an assistant town attorney at unanimously approved a resolution to hire interim director Joseph Rose, at an annual salary not to exceed $40,550. Rose assumed the position on Wednesday. The supervisor said the town had been looking to reorganize the department to enhance its operations and to focus on enforcing town codes in Huntington Station and throughout the town, which is on what the new director will focus. Matt Harris, a Huntington Station resident who has worked closely with Lindahl, praised him for his work in Huntington Station.

the time, did not recuse herself, saying she felt she was able to make a fair decision. When reached on Wednesday, John Schaninger, vice president of sales and marketing for QuickChek, said his stores are larger than what’s typical on Long Island. He did say that he hopes to see a QuickChek in that location or another in the area. Efforts to get in touch with Rice Properties were unsuccessful. “He is nothing but a gentleman and he was quite receptive to Huntington Station issues,” Harris said. Councilwoman Susan Berland (D) said she didn’t want to comment on the matter, calling it a “personnel issue.” Councilman Gene Cook (I) also had kind words to say about the former director. He said while he knew there were some issues going on, he thought Lindahl wanted to stay. The councilman maintained that he respects Lindahl’s decision to leave. “Ken Lindahl was a great guy, he will be missed,” Cook said.

could mandate an increase in elementary school staff of up to 11 teachers. The caps on class sizes range from 20 to 25 students, depending on the elementary grade level. School board members commended Caramore for adding full-day kindergarten to next year’s budget. In an interview after the meeting, Caramore said when he and Kathleen Molander, assistant superintendent for

You know you don’t know that until you run it at the end. We just budgeted what we need to operate and fortunately we were able to add in the kindergarten and the bleachers at the high school.”

State Senate strengthens sex offender laws By BarBara Donlon
Nine bills that aim to close loopholes in state laws protecting children and communities from sex offenders currently await action from the State Assembly, as the State Senate approved the bills last month. State Sen. John Flanagan (R-East Northport) sponsored seven of the nine bills that address critical issues regarding the safety of children. One of the bills would require the schools to notify parents about sex offenders living within the district. Another bill co-sponsored by Senator Michael Venditto (RMassapequa) addresses a New York State Court of Appeals ruling relating to Nassau County. In that case, the court sided with a sex offender who completed his parole and moved within 500 feet of a Nassau County school. His actions complied with state law but violated a local residency restriction. The new bill enables local municipalities to respond to the needs of their community and create laws relating to sex
offenders. Communities would be allowed to put additional restrictions in place, as long as they are not less restrictive than state laws. “I think the timing on this is important, we don’t want gaps,” Flanagan said in a phone interview. Another bill reduces the amount of time it takes to determine a convicted sex offender’s risk level, in an effort to make sure they are not released into the community without being designated, among other requirements. An offender can be labeled a level one, two or three. It is important for a risk determination to be made, as it determines if the offender has a low, moderate or high risk of repeating the offense again, and it dictates how many years an offender must register with the state. Also, some laws apply to certain levels of offenders but not others. According to the New York Sate Sex Offender Registry, as of March 9, Suffolk County is home to 535 level-one, 305 level-two and 170 level-three
offenders. There are currently 12 offenders without any risk designation. In Suffolk County, the sex offender recidivism rate dropped 100 percent from six cases in 2011 and 2012 to zero cases to date. Another bill would fix a loophole that allowed sex offenders to spend significant periods of time at a residence other than the primary one registered with the state. The bill amends the definition of a residence and requires the offender to register any location at which he or she spends two or more days a week. Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci (R-Melville) also signed on to sponsor the State Assembly version of the bill that prohibits levels one, two and three sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of any school in the state. The Senate has already approved the bill. Lupinacci said he is pushing for not only this bill but all of them to be approved, as the safety of children is what matters most. “I will continue to fight to keep our communities safe and

our children out of harm’s way,” Lupinacci said in a press release. “I will urge my colleagues in the Assembly to pass this legislation so parents can rest with ease knowing their children are safer while at school.” Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket) said if the Assembly endorses the bills, he would also support them. He continued to say he has been a
long-time supporter of any bills that stem from Megan’s law, an informal name for national laws that require enforcement authorities to notify the community regarding the whereabouts of convicted sex offenders. “There’s no reason to wait,” Flanagan said. “We passed legislation in our house. Let’s just get this done.”

Team up to starve New York’s testing machine Your turn BY ALI GORDON
This is my fourth year serving as a trustee of the Comsewogue Board of Education. I love every minute of it, because I love my community and I take very seriously the responsibility entrusted to me. The thoughts expressed here are my own. I do not speak for the Comsewogue School District or the Board of Education. We have been warned that a trustee who speaks out could be removed by the state education commissioner. But our schools and our children depend on those of us who were elected to represent the best interests of our community. I cannot stay quiet for fear of retribution from the New York State Education Department anymore. There has been tremendous criticism of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s recent decision to withhold state aid and extort legislators into passing his education reforms. Our state legislators are stuck between agreeing to terrible reforms or refusing, leading to a late state budget and a potential loss of millions of dollars for schools. Cuomo’s proposals include measures
such as increasing the time to earn tenure from three to five years and evaluating teachers based upon half of their students’ state test scores. The reforms Cuomo is pushing are disingenuous and dangerous; he works out of the privatization handbook and uses inflammatory statistics. He cannot think of another way to move forward in education except through obsessive testing. Cuomo and the Board of Regents use a one-size-fits-all answer that will never work for every community, while an entire generation of students is being sacrificed for testing data. Each of Cuomo’s education policies reflect a desire to remove local control. He insists that NYSED investigate the teacher evaluations procedures of Long Island school districts, thinking the system is skewed. Those local evaluation plans were approved by the very same entity, NYSED. Here is what Cuomo cannot fathom: Teachers on Long Island were rated highly effective or effective because they are. If Long Island was a state, we would rank near the top in high school graduation rates, Intel Science Talent Search semifinalists and Siemens Competition semifinalists. Cuomo prefers to ignore these statistics because they do not fit his narrative.
‘It is time to work together to elevate public education without destroying things that are already working.’
Stock photo
Long Island has high graduation rates and many Intel finalists each year.
There are several ways to stop the destruction of public schools: Cuomo must separate his education reforms from his executive budget proposal. If he believes in these reforms, he should let them stand alone as legislation, allow a healthy debate and not circumvent the separation of powers established by our Constitution.
The Legislature should ensure that new Board of Regents appointees have public education experience — they establish state education policies, and interviews are now being held for four appointees. Parents must educate themselves and make a decision regarding testing in grades three through eight. This will be the third year my children have refused to take the state exams. This is the strongest weapon we have in the fight to save public education. As the number of test refusals grows, the reforms dependent upon those numbers will falter. We will starve the testing machine. It is time to work together to elevate public education without destroying things that are already working. I cannot sit by quietly anymore and wait for someone else to stand up. I have a sworn duty to represent the interests of my community, including speaking out against policies that endanger the well-being of our students and faculty.

but is still responsible for the legal proceedings — has maintained that the plant is grossly overassessed and locals fear losing the substantial tax revenue coming from the plant, either through a lower tax assessment or the power plant closing altogether. The town has said that if LIPA is successful in its lawsuit to recover $270 million in what it alleges are excess property taxes paid since 2010, residents could see a 15 percent increase in town property taxes and a 60 percent increase in Northport-East Northport school taxes. The litigation has weighed down the town’s budget as well. Last June, the board allocated an additional $600,000 for outside professional costs. A portion of that went to the town’s legal fight against LIPA, “due to the complexity and magnitude of the tax certiorari proceeding,” according to a board resolution.

“We looked at our expenditures, our history of expenditures, and that’s what we based our current budget on for the [2015-16] school year,” Kathleen Molander, the district’s assistant superintendent for business, said in an interview after the meeting. This year, the district has so far spent $229,907 from its legal line, from July to January. LIPA, power plant operator National Grid, Huntington Town and the school district have been embroiled in a legal battle over the value of the aging plant and how much it should pay in property taxes to support the town and schools. What happens in parkland will stay in parkland. The Suffolk County Legislature has approved a new rule that will require the county to funnel money it receives in exchange for its open space into a fund used only for acquiring and preserving such land. Currently, when New York State takes control of local land through eminent domain and compensates the county for the loss, those dollars go into the general fund and could be used on any number of expenses. But the bill, which was sponsored by Legislator Kara Hahn (D-Setauket), will make sure the money is “deposited in a new or existing capital project account which is dedicated to the acquisition of parkland,” according to the legislation. The legislation is still waiting on the
county executive’s signature before it becomes law. The new rule will bring the exchange in line with the procedure for when dollars flow in the other direction — when Suffolk County buys parkland, it uses money from a fund that is fed with sales tax revenues and is specifically set aside for land acquisition. “I just want to make sure any money we are reimbursed gets put back toward its original intended purpose of saving open space and protecting drinking water,” Hahn said in a press release. The legislator introduced the bill in December, and the Legislature’s Parks and Recreation Committee discussed the issue in late February. The Legislature unanimously approved the measure last week. Suffolk County manages more than 46,000 acres of parkland, making it the largest county-owned park system in the nation, Hahn’s office said.

Financial sense pays off for Northport 5th-grader By juLiANNE CuBA
A Trinity Regional School fifth-grader is a whiz kid when it comes to trading and the financial markets. On Feb. 25, Jack Nixon, of Northport, along with his computing teacher, Lauren LeMieux, were recognized after Jack placed third in the nation in the InvestWrite Competition, sponsored by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) Foundation and McGraw Hill Financial. Since 1977, more than 15 million students have participated in the SIFMA Foundation’s Stock Market Game. The InvestWrite competition was launched in 2004, and it challenges students in grades four to 12 to learn and understand the stock market through real-world practices and education in the classroom. This year, the InvestWrite competition had students write an essay to a friend and encourage the use of saving and investing money, rather than spending it. Beginning in 2013, McGraw Hill Financial has sponsored the program. Out of about 2,500 fifth-graders, from all 50 states, Jack’s essay
placed third. After selling eggs produced by chickens in his backyard, Jack said he invested all the money he earned in a TD Ameritrade account. Along with help from his mother, who works for a mutual funds company, and through his own personal financial experience, Jack says he was able to learn the ways of the markets. I’m so happy for him, after I found out he won,” Jack’s mom, Diana Ferrone, said. “And then I read [his essay] and I was like ‘Wow, what he’s saying really comes from a child’s point of view but it’s so smart.’ He’s investing, and he’s not afraid of it.” Jack said he had no idea he had won the competition until the surprise ceremony at his school on the morning of Feb. 25, featuring his mom. “I was excited and then once I got up on the stage, she appeared for some reason and I’m like when did you get here?” Jack said of his mom. “I was completely surprised. I didn’t even know I could win that kind of level of competition.” Jack’s computing teacher, LeMieux, said this is the first year

her class participated in the competition, but after the results, she said she’ll definitely be doing it again. “I feel this game gives them a real-world connection, with history and economics and learning how to write a great essay,” she said. “Learning to work in teams and things of that nature. They’re so excited about it. They realize how much they’re learning and having fun at the same time.”
SIFMA President Melanie Mortimer said that since the program’s inception, the country has seen increased standardized test scores, as well as an increased understanding of economics and personal finance. “We believe that young people can and must learn personal finance as early in life as possible,” she said. “Because more and more, they are being introduced to financial decision making ear-
lier in their lives … in education, it’s really critical for learning to be practical and fun.” Jack, who is also a Boy Scout and a member of Huntington YMCA’s swim team, said he doesn’t want to go directly into trading as a career. “I want to go into more hotel kind of management,” he said. “I think it’s called ‘Hotel Impossible’ — the show — I kind of liked it. I think it would be good for me.”

Author visits E. Northport senior living facility On Wednesday, March 4, author David Troxel visited Atria East Northport to speak about 2015 trends in dementia care. Troxel, a dementia expert, is the author of five Alzheimer’s education books,
including “The Best Friends Approach to Alzheimer’s Care,” which was included in the Julianne Moore movie “Still Alice.” His care model is reflected in Atria’s Life Guidance memory care
neighborhood, which focuses on providing individualized care. He signed books at a recent open house event at the Life Guidance memory care neighborhood, which was recently renovated.
At the February Harborfields school board meeting, Timothy Russo was appointed as the new assistant principal of Harborfields High School and will officially assume his duties on July 1, 2015. Russo started his education career at St. Anthony’s High School in Huntington as a social studies teacher. Two years later, Russo began working as a Harborfields High School social studies teacher. That led to a transition to becoming dean in the student management office. Russo has coached Harborfields boys and girls cross-country, winter and spring track, boys lacrosse and boys basketball. Russo received his Bachelor of Arts in political science from Marist College and his Master of Arts in secondary education from Dowling College. In 2009, Russo earned his advanced
certification in educational leadership from C.W. Post Long Island University. “I am extremely excited to have the chance to work with the exceptional leadership team that is in place in the Harborfields School District,” Russo said. “I look forward to continuing to support our students, teachers and community as a whole in achieving the excellence we are all accustomed to.”

New anti-crime symbol sprouts in Huntington Station By Jenni Culkin
Huntington Station residents are looking to wrap up crime in their communities, one pink ribbon at a time. Members of the recently established anti-crime group Huntington Matters are behind a new campaign of getting the community to be safer, by tying pink ribbons around trees, doors, fences and other common places. The goal is to send a message: Crime is not welcome here. Xavier Palacios, a co-founder of Huntington Matters and a Huntington school board member has been one of the leading voices to advocate for the pinkribbon initiative. Palacios said the pink ribbons represent “a community that sticks together, that looks out for one another.” The pink-ribbon initiative is the brainchild of the group’s neighborhood watch. The initiative’s slogan is, “Standing united for a safe and healthy Huntington.” The tragic murders of Maggie Rosales, Daniel Carbajal, Luis Ramos-Rodriguez and Sarah
Strobel, all happening within one year, sparked the community’s drive to make a change for the better. Last October, Huntington Station residents put their feet down and officially established the group Huntington Matters. The effort of the pink-ribbon initiative is townwide and continues to expand. Huntington Matters hopes that the ribbons will help spread further awareness so that all of the surrounding communities in the area will actively fight the crime epidemic. Palacios said he hopes that the pink ribbons will provide solidarity among the residents of the Town of Huntington and show the government, police officers and other stakeholders in crime that Huntington will “no longer be bullied.” Jim McGoldrick, a concerned Huntington Station citizen and advocate for the pink-ribbon initiative, expressed gratefulness for the government and police officers’ involvement with the initiative. He said that the ribbons are letting people know that the people of Huntington

are “taking their town back.” According to June Margolin, the coordinator of the Huntington Matters neighborhood watch, the attendance by concerned citizens doubled from the first meeting in December to the second meeting last month. The meetings are forums for discussions on topics that include
alcohol, drugs, how Narcan has been used to reverse overdoses and other procedures that pose a threat to the health and safety of the town. The Suffolk County Police Department’s 2nd Precinct and Huntington Matters have been supporting one another through difficult experiences that residents
of Huntington Station have been going through together, according to members of the group. The next Huntington Matters meeting will be held on March 25 at 7 p.m. at the South Huntington Public Library on 145 Pidgeon Hill Road in Huntington Station. Interested residents are welcome to attend.
Local group to tackle town issues By JAne lee BOCk
A new group is rolling up its sleeves to tackle qualityof-life issues in Huntington Town. The Huntington Opportunity Resource Center Leadership Council, a group of about 75 community individuals, has been meeting recently to come up with various solutions to common issues and concerns in Huntington Town — and in particular, Huntington Station. Those issues include community involvement, crime and safety, among others. The center, located in Huntington Station, provides a number of services to town residents, including résumé preparation, job search assistance and not-for-profit service referrals. An initiative of Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, and financially backed by the Huntington Community Development Agency, the center is run by the county and town, and provides its services out of a building the town owns at 1248 New York Ave. “It is leaders coming together to ensure that the resource center and the services that are provided are not redundant and that it actually addresses the gaps in the community,” said Councilwoman Tracey Edwards (D), who spearheaded the center’s opening in December. “We expect to address community empowerment and safety, community engagement and intervention, unemployment and underemployment and youth.” The council is made up of civic and town leaders, county representatives, not-for-profits agencies, elected officials, fire and police department personnel and school district representatives. A total of 75 individuals are members of the council. At its first two meetings, the council organized into subcommittees to concentrate on specific matters.

Some of those committees include a community involvement and safety group, a youth committee and a Huntington Station public image committee, Edwards said at a recent meeting of Huntington Matters, an anticrime civic group. While its monthly meetings will not be open to the public, anyone with an idea or suggestion for the council can bring their concern to any member of the council, who will then bring it to the attention of the group, according to Edwards. “It is a little early to talk about what will be done,” said Edwards. “The community and the council will decide what things will be happening within the community.”

A technological magic carpet ride to the past
Between you and me By Leah S. Dunaief
vtimes@tbrnewspapers.com
Apple has been much in the news of late, introducing its “Dick Tracy” watch along with other sophisticated new products, and we have gotten used to the idea that the tech company has revolutionized our world. But then one little incident drove home for me the miracle wrought by Apple and its Silicon Valley colleagues. We marvel anew. Here is an example.
I was chatting with a friend, who confessed that she had lots of jobs to do and was not doing any of them because she was just being lazy. Since I have known her for a long time and am secure in the belief that she will forgive my little idiosyncrasies, I began to sing the lyrics of a song her lament brought to mind. The words go like this: Lazy bones, sleepin’ in the sun, How you ’spect to get your day’s work done? You’ll never get your day’s work done, Sleepin’ in the noonday sun. She immediately perked up and asked where that song came from, a movie or a show? I thought a moment, then told her the song came from my mother, who also had a habit of just bursting into song whenever the circumstances triggered a melody. (You see where I got it — must be a special gene.) I’d heard her sing that song many times as she worked. So where did she get it, this lazy, contagious
melody suited to a crooner like Bing Crosby or Perry Como? My friend was persistent, encouraging me to think of the song’s origin. Unable to reply, I did what I have done thousands of times when I have been stumped for a fact or reference. I turned on my cellphone and searched the Web. Not sure how to ask for information, I simply typed in “song lazy bones” in Google and to my surprise, up came fully a dozen references to the song. I learned that it was part of the Tin Pan Alley genre, written in 1933 with lyrics by Johnny Mercer and music by Hoagy Carmichael. It was a major hit by Ted Lewis and Mildred Bailey when it was released, selling over a million copies around the world at a time when a million was really a million. No wonder my mother knew it. The song, it seems, was written in 20 minutes. Carmichael related that Mercer had come over to his apartment and caught him
“snoozin’” on the couch. Inspired by the sight, Mercer told Carmichael he was going to write a song called “Lazy Bones.” Carmichael perked right up, the two men went over to the piano, Mercer threw out the first line, Carmichael started playing a melody — and 20 minutes later the famous song had emerged. How do I know all that? It was written in Wikipedia, one of the selections offered by Google. Better yet, as I considered the other listings, I saw one from YouTube, touched the screen to pull it in, and in five seconds was listening to and watching Dorothy Dandridge and Carmichael sitting alongside each other at the piano and singing “Lazy Bones” in 1941. The song is irresistible. Mercer was a Southerner from Savannah, Ga., who resented what he called the phony southern vernacular lyrics written by those who had never been to the South. The popularity of the song has been attributed by some to the authenticity

of those regional lyrics. That too came from Wikipedia. So in a matter of seconds, I was transported back by YouTube to my mother’s kitchen, a young child enjoying the rich smell of the roasting chicken, watching her peeling the carrots and listening to her singing “Lazy Bones” all the while. She was probably then in her 30s, her hair was still brown and a starched apron was stretched around her trim figure. Talk about “back to the future,” this was a magic carpet ride back to the past until the song ended. Looking at the iPhone in the palm of my hand, I was stunned by the power of the experience. I can hardly wait to see the technological miracles still to come.
OPINION EDITORIAL
Protecting against sex offenders It’s easy to unite behind protecting our communities against sex offenders. That’s why we support recent measures in the New York State Senate to close loopholes in current laws to do just that, and we urge the Assembly to sign on to them. The package of nine bills would enact a range of measures that would allow public authorities to more closely monitor the whereabouts of registered sex offenders. One measure would, as part of their residency requirements, mandate they report not only their addresses but also any location at which they spend more than two days a week. Another law would allow local municipalities to enact their own restrictions on sex offenders, as long as they are not less restrictive than state laws already on the books. The push is a direct response to a recent New

York State Court of Appeals ruling that sided with a registered sex offender who had completed his parole and moved within 500 feet of a Nassau County school — an action that complied with state law but violated a local residency restriction. The package of laws would do other things, too, like require level two and level three sex offenders to disclose their employment and residency on the state registry and mandate that schools distribute information to parents about offenders living in the district. It would also prohibit level two and level three offenders from living within 1,500 feet of their victim’s residence. State Sen. John Flanagan (R-East Northport) put it well this week: “There’s no reason to wait.” While we realize these types of restrictions may just push out sex offenders to other communities — maybe not making us the best neighbors — we’re okay with a “not-in-myFile photo backyard” stance on this issue. Tornadoes sweep through Suffolk bracket Girls’ BasketBall
Harborfields . . . . . . . 48 Commack . . . . . . . . . 37 By Bill landon
Although some called it a meaningless game whereby both teams, win or lose, play for the Long Island championship title, you couldn’t tell by the intensity on the court. At stake was the bragging rights for the overall Suffolk County Section XI crown. The Commack girls’ basketball team controlled the game early, but it was Harborfields’ smothering defense that made the difference in the game, as the Tornadoes took their first lead in the final seconds of the first quarter and never looked back to win 48-37. Commack came into the game Friday at Suffolk County Community College fresh off its victory over No. 1 Huntington two nights earlier, where the Cougars nabbed their first Suffolk County title in program history. Harborfields, on the other hand, is no stranger to going deep into the postseason, winning the Suffolk title last year and making it to the semifinal round at Hudson Valley Community College last season, where the Tornadoes were two wins away from a state title. This season, the girls first topped No. 1 Elwood-John Glenn for the Class A crown, and followed it up with a win over Hampton Bays for the small school champion title. Harborfields turned up the defensive heat, giving Commack few looks at the rim, and senior forward Donasja Scott was the difference in the game, as she was

unstoppable down low. “It starts with hard work and our coach always tells us that ‘will always beats skill,’” Scott said. “And we all work hard … really hard.” Harborfields senior guard Helena Ottaviano took matters into her own hands with her team trailing 9-8 with 21 seconds left in the first quarter. With two shots at the foul line, she swished both to help her team edge ahead 10-9, and give the Tornadoes a lead they would not relinquish. Commack threatened with 3:41 left in
the third when Commack senior center Chelsea Schultz drained a 3-pointer to close within three, 27-24, but her team would never get that close again. The Tornadoes’ press stifled the Cougars’ offense, limiting them to few looks at the rim. Scott made her presence known as the guards fed her the ball, and Commack had no answer. In the closing seconds of the third, Scott appeared at the charity stripe shooting 1– and-1, and nailed both as her team surged ahead 34-27. Scott was perfect from the foul line all evening, hitting 6-of-6 free-throw
attempts. The senior forward was just as effective defensively. She stole the ball midway through the final quarter and threw it downcourt for a fast break. Her teammate missed the first shot, but Scott broke to the basket, took the pass and scored in the play she started. With a 45-36 advantage with just over a minute left, Harborfields ran down the game clock to secure the win. Scott led all scorers with 22 points, Ottaviano and sophomore guard Christiana de Borja each tallied seven, and senior forward Alex Werbitsky added six. Harborfields senior guard Allie Tunick said her team has really gelled this season, and will use that togetherness moving into the championship game. “We’re all friends on and off the [floor] and that translates to good team chemistry court,” she said. To prepare for Friday’s game, Tunick added, “We’ll do a lot of conditioning to stay in shape, work on defense and focus on our shooting skills.” Harborfields head coach Russ Tietjen was impressed with his team’s progress as the season unfolded, and said that his Tornadoes will now work on preparing for North Shore. Harborfields squares off against North Shore for the Long Island championship title at LIU-Post Friday at 5 p.m. “We’ll work hard in practice,” Tietjen said. “Our defense is what drives our offense. [North Shore is] a very good scoring team that presses a lot, and has very good athletes, so we have to be prepared for that.”
